Nintendo Is Getting Into The Movie Business

nintendo's company logo

Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima was interviewed by Asahi and discussed Nintendo’s initiative with movies. Not only is Nintendo getting into the movie business, but Kimishima hinted that Nintendo wants a production system where “we can do as much as we can ourselves.” Kimishima continued, saying that Nintendo hopes to have the first movie ready in the next 2-3 years. Yes, Nintendo is considering their own franchises, including Mario. Not much more was revealed, but it sounds like Nintendo sees movies as a promising business move. Feel free to let us know in the comments what Nintendo franchises would you like to see appear on the big screen.

  1. That would be pretty cool. This far in life where the nostalgia fest Nintendo is gonna start making movies. We made it boys.

    1. I’d kill for that. The Nintendo Cinematic Universe. Much like the Smash Bros. Brawl cutscenes during the story mode

  2. *Re-watches IGN’s 2009 April Fools’ Legend of Zelda movie trailer*

    Ladies and gentleman, that movie, though potentially different in concept and plot, is now possible.

    Just make it good, Ninty.

      1. I remember back when Radiant Dawn was out, and I came to the cutscene where Ike and his mercenaries rescued Lucia. It was so awesome. Went to YT to watch it a millions times over. Haven’t age that well, but man do something like that cutscene again and Nintendo have my money for sure!

  3. I have waited for this for a year… YES A MOVIE BY NINTENDO WOOOOOH! Oh my peanut butter
    LUIGI’S MANSION MOVIE I LOOOOOVE LUIGI! :O shout out PLEEEASE (not the shout out the movie)

  4. I’m not too sure about this direction….
    It can either bomb like many other film-adapted games, which is likely. Or it can be amazing, which I doubt.

    1. But Nintendo is talking about having a strong hand in the making of these movies. With that in mind, these movies have a way better chance than say a movie made by an idiot that hasn’t played the game nor even cares about the game’s story. *cough*UweBoll*cough* Oh & the Resident Evil and Silent Hill movies, least in my opinion, are pretty great. The only real downside to the Resident Evil movies is the fact it wasn’t Spencer who created the T-Virus but *sighs* Dr. Ashford. Oh & the fact the T-Virus was actually air-borne in the movies where as in the games, it wasn’t. Not to mention it’s not nearly as infectious in the games as it is in the movies. Other than those issues, everything else was great.

    2. If Nintendo put these properties in the right hands they can be amazing. Just imagine animated movies for Luigi’s Mansion, Super Mario Bros, Live Action/Animated Zelda, Live Action Pokemon, a movie based on Yoshi… and the possibilities goes on and on. If there is one video game company that can do amazingly well in the movie industry it’s Nintendo.

        1. He said “…one video game company…”. Sony is not a video game company. They’re a company that sells anything and everything just to make a buck. Nintendo is the only true video game company left that is still making video game hardware.

          1. Semantics. Here’s referring to a general term, being video game company, not necessarily that they only make games or consoles as you inferred.

            Fine then, WoW and now Angry Birds. Both will be successful due to their install base.

  5. I still can’t believe that they made a movie out of a fucking puzzle game – Angry Birds. If this can happen, anything can happen.
    -Tetris the Movie
    -Picross the Movie
    -Miiverse the Movie
    Today’s movie business is foolproof. Do it, Nintendo!

      1. I hate those fucking Miiverse admin basterds! This happened to me:
        I postet an unused download code for a game I already had. The code was legal, I didn’t want to throw it away. Naturally, my post was deleted, so I read through ALL the Miiverse rules. There was NOT ONE SINGLE RULE that said I’m not allowed to post download codes. So I wrote the admins and asked why they deleted my post. I was all friendly and everything. As a reaction they banned me for two weeks! THEY BANNED ME BECAUSE I ASKED WHY MY POST GOT DELETED!!!

  6. But who’s first? Personally, I’d like a Zelda, Metroid or Splatoon movie. Of course the Splatoon movie will be full CG animated but the Zelda and Metroid movies would live action! Mario deserves another chance though.

    1. Mario definitely deserves a movie that is both good because it’s entertaining & good because it respects the source material which isn’t Super Mario Bros The Movie which was only good entertainment wise as it respected NOTHING of the games. Yoshi was smaller than Mario? The Goombas were 7, or more, feet tall. Hell! There weren’t even any damn real Koopa Troopas. Oh & let’s not forget Big Bertha wasn’t even a fish but a very big woman. Oh & the Bob-ombs weren’t even sentient creatures but a tiny ass wind up bomb with no mind of it’s own. Did I miss anything?

        1. Not to mention Iggy and Larry (was it Larry?) Koopa who like Bowser were humanoid lizard creatures, the parallel universe was an unfitting steampunk/cyberpunk setting, Mario and Luigi used guns, and the only fungus in the entire movie was a mutated king.

          “Trust the fungus” indeed.

          1. There is one thing that movie did give us that some, if not most, seem to like to think is real in the games: Luigi & Daisy are a thing.

  7. *incoming “But I don’t want Link to talk!” and “But them talking would ruin the otherwordly & fantasy feel of the franchise!” complaints* I know those excuses are coming. Just give it a minute.

    1. I think Zelda having voice acting or being a live-action movie with dialogue could work, even if Link was an exception. ESPECIALLY if Link was an exception.

      Remember how Metroid Prime 3 Corruption had full voice acting except for Samus who remained silent throughout? I think that worked; half the time you could tell what Samus was thinking/feeling just by her actions (like when she clenches her fist after being forced to kill Gandrayda), no words necessary.

      1. Well we know both Link AND Samus can talk & do have their own personalities. We just rarely see them in-game. Like I said to noahth below, you can learn a lot about someone’s personality from how they carry themselves.

    2. Since you brought it up….I think it’s dumb to assume Link is a mute. If that were the case, ingame characters would make reference to it all the time. Instead, I see Link as the strong, silent type, and I don’t think there would be any other way to depict him in film or TV, practically speaking.

      1. Well we know he can talk. There has been a few 3D Zelda games showing Link explaining things to some people. Given the right actor, Link would be just fine if he actually spoke. They just need someone that has played all the games & paid close attention to how he carries himself in the game. You can learn a lot about someone’s personality just from how they carry themselves.

  8. Just no live action and I’m good. Live-action is never adapted right and makes the original source material look bad. I see Nintendo sticking to cartoon movies anyway since they plan to release thr same movie in multiple countries. And since (sadly) the movies will have to have the characters voiced I REALLY hope we get some good voice actors. Nothing cring-worthy.

    1. Live action is never adapted right? I strongly disagree with that. The biggest issue some makers of movies based on video games, comics, & books have is they think the source material won’t translate well from comics/video games/books to live action. Exactly why the Fantastic Four movies have all flopped. Exactly why Deadpool was an utter failure in X-Men Origins Wolverine.

      1. Yeah, the Five Nights at Fredy’s movie is going to be live action. If that does well (since it’ll have actual animatronics and not all CGI) it’ll prove they’re ready. Besides, Samus would do great in live action, as long as the company that helps Nintendo doesn’t, um, oversexualize her too much. You know, make a PG-13 Metroid movie. Doubt that’ll happen though.

            1. Too bad Fox isn’t working with Marvel like Sony is doing. Otherwise, Deadpool could have referenced Spider-Man in the movie. Then again, he does break the fourth wall so maybe Deadpool could have gotten away with it. lol

              1. I heard rumors that Disney-Marvel & Fox are working behind the scenes for a future partnership on an X-Men finally being canon to the MCU!

                No joke. While they are just rumors for now. Maybe something about the helicarrier appearing in the Deadpool Movie.

            1. Deadpool: [as Angel Dust walk towards them] Finish fucking her the fuck up.

              Colossus: Language please.

              Deadpool: Suck a cock!
              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
              Deadpool: Now, I’m about to do to you what Limp Bizkit did to music in the late 90s.
              ~~~~~~
              Deadpool: [to the audience] I know right? You’re probably thinking, “Whose balls did I have to fondle to get my very own movie”? I can’t tell you his name, but it rhymes with “Polverine.”

              [In an Australian accent]

              Deadpool: And let me tell you, he’s got a nice pair of smooth criminals down under.
              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
              Colossus: You will come talk with Professor Xavier.
              Deadpool: McAvoy or Stewart? These timelines can get so confusing.
              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
              Deadpool: You’re probably thinking, “My boyfriend said this was a superhero movie but that guy in the suit just turned that other guy into a fucking kabab!” Well, I may be super, but I’m no hero. And yeah, technically, this is a murder. But some of the best love stories start with a murder. And that’s exactly what this is, a love story. And to tell it right… I gotta take you back to long before I squeezed this ass into red spandex.
              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
              Deadpool: [to Colossus] If I ever decide to become a crime-fighting shit swizzler, who rooms with a bunch of other little whiners at Neverland Mansion with some creepy, old, bald, Heaven’s Gate-looking motherfucker… on that day, I’ll send your shiny, happy ass a friend request!
              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
              [Wastes two bullets on the corpse of a goon who shot him in the ass]
              Deadpool: Ugh, stupid, stupid. Worth it!
              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
              Wade Wilson: Here’s what I’m actually gonna do? I’m gonna work through his crew until somebody gives up Francis, force him to fix this, and then put a bullet in his skull and fuck the brain hole.
              Weasel: I don’t want to see that or think of it again. But the douchebag does think your dead, right?
              Wade Wilson: Yeah.
              Weasel: That’s good. You should keep it that way.
              Wade Wilson: What, like, wear a mask?
              Weasel: Yes. A very thick mask. All the time. I am sorry… you are haunting. Your face is the stuff of nightmares.
              Wade Wilson: Like a testicle with teeth.
              Weasel: You will die alone. I mean, if you could die. Ideally, for others’ sake.
              lmfao
    2. i don’t mind for a live action but who cares i can still watch there movies that they are developing in there source. i hope we get kid icarus anime movie and be on the big screen that everyone in the world will see it.
  9. Mario can easily go first because he’s the face of Nintendo. But what other IP’s can be adapted for the big screen after?
    Pikmin? Metroid? Splatoon? Fire Emblem? Donkey Kong Country? Kirby?
    1. Fire Emblem and Metroid would DEFINITELY work.
      Splatoon, Pikmin, Star Fox, and Donkey Kong would be better off as TV shows with 30-minute or hour-long episodes. Hell, DK’s already had one (albeit corny as hell) and Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins was very promising.
      1. I think Nintendo needs to make sure to carefully select which franchises they make movies of. Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, Metroid, Zelda (to an extent), Star Fox, and Mother could all easily be used in movies. F-Zero and Pikmin could work good, but I don’t feel all too confident if they were to make movies of them.
        Mario, DK, and Kirby… I have my doubts with how well they can actually work from a movie standpoint (there’s just not enough story or character development material to work with in my opinion).
        I just really hope that Nintendo can create something fantastic.
        1. You don’t think Kirby could work as a movie? I think there’s enough character development for that to work; more so than Mario, anyway.
          They could do something like… King Dedede is up to no good and causing trouble, so Kirby sets out to stop him. Turns out, while Dedede WAS making problems, something much bigger- Dark Matter- was at work, using Dedede as a distraction. This forces Kirby and Dedede, and also Meta Knight, to work together to defeat Dark Matter.
          Also, what else could a Mother movie be besides a film version of any of the three games, and while I would LOVE a movie of Mother 3, I just don’t see the practicality.
  10. Speaking of theater content, the Pikmin 3D shorts. This would make the perfect basis for a Universal Studios 4D attraction.
    BTW: 4D is a 3D show that implements in-theater elements. Said elements are meant to give the viewer other forms of sensory stimuli (touch, scents, motion, etc).
  11. I want a completely CG Zelda Movie, with an artsyle of either the Wii U tech demo, Zelda Wii U/NX or if they go the more comedy side a WW artsyle would be nice. Nintendo! Fulfill my childhood hopes and dreams! #thenostalgiaisreal!
  12. YES! Then they can make quality movies that don’t stink… unless of course they can’t figure out how to do plot or something and then we’re back where we started, but no more Mario Bros. incidents!
  13. If they made a Splatoon movie, who’d you like to see voicing Callie and Marie? I’d like Tara Strong to voice them, she voiced all 3 Power Puff Girls back then, she’s got the voice talent!
  14. Nintendo has technically had a movie come out from one of their franchises. The Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva movie was a great hit with fans of the franchise and the Professor Layton games have the official Nintendo stamp. So in reality Nintendo has already made a good impression with game to movie adaptations.
    1. they did have a super mario bros movie back in the 80s and they have a mario bros anime back then as well, but i wish nintendo can develop a new mario animated series and get one company at a time to help out on developing a new series for nintendo.
  15. I’m all for Movies being made by Nintendo, based on existing franchises or not (Imagine what they would come up with if it was something entirely new. I can not even … ).
    … but I am also a little worried. Nintendo is not exactly well known for cinematic storytelling, or deep characters. Who would they hire to write and direct these movies? They make FANTASTIC gameplay experiences …but do they really have any idea how to produce a quality feature film?
    Are we talking live action or animation here? Global theater releases, straight to Neflix and Blu-Ray films, or stuff only made to be seen in Japan?
    This raises so many questions. I hope they know what they are doing.
    1. Nintendo having control & being a constant in the making of these movies is good but it could also be bad if Nintendo goes TOO overboard with the control.
  16. It’ll be interesting to see how this works out. My guess is Mario will be the first because, of course, he’s their biggest guy. Perhaps Nintendo could eventually use movies to increase the popularity of their lesser known franchises. And if they do well, it could result in more games, merchandise, etc.
    Anyways, I’m all for this. I’ve been waiting far too long.
  17. I want to see an Avengers type shared Universe of Nintendo Characters. Perhaps a Captain N type of situation, where he teams up with the major players.
    1. “Hello Samus. Nice ship you got here; is it Federation-commissioned or is it your own craft?”
      *Samus readies arm cannon*
      ” *laughs* You can put the cannon down, I’m not here to hurt you. No… I’m here to offer you a chance to help more than just the Federation-controlled- and uncontrolled- space.”
      *Samus lowers arm cannon*
      “You can call me Captain N. I’m here to talk to you about the Gamemaster Initiative.”
  18. Pingback: Nintendo podría entrar en el negocio del cine
  19. I don’t care about a Mario or Zelda movie. These franchises have been milked to death.
    But a StarFox, F-Zero, Metroid and Donkey Kong movie. Oh god yes! Make that happen, Nintendo.
  20. Nintendo should learn first before jumping into the movie industry full on. Squaresoft did a movie and went bankrupt. They had to merge with Enix and had Sony to invest money in exchange for share in the company. Mario and Zelda won’t be a commercial success it will only attract Nintendo fans, not a large audience . How many video games franchise had been successful (make some benefits) ? 2 or 3 maybe.
  21. I guess Zelda, Metroid, and Fire Emblem are the obvious choices. They’d be the easiest to adapt to screen. A smash bros movie would probably work too though.
  22. Smart. They’re going to have lean on something else when they’re out of the gaming market, like good ol’ Konami. I’m at least curious what Nintendo’s potential is in the movie business. They have the best known IPs, let’s hope they can deliver something respectable of them.
  23. they did have a super mario bros movie back in the 80s and they have a mario bros anime back then as well, but i wish nintendo can develop a new mario animated series and get one company at a time to help out on developing a new series for nintendo.
    i hope the NX will be successful like the wii once it release in there markets
    1. Nintendo had nothing to do with those. Oh & the Super Mario Bros movie came out in 1993, not the 80s.
