Zelda: Breath of the Wild Won’t Have A Female Hero

Rumors and speculation had fueled a theory that Zelda: Breath of the Wild will have a female hero. Well, things have been cleared up, thanks to a Gamespot interview with Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma. Aonuma is aware of the rumors, and he even says that “we did discuss as a staff as to what would be possible if we took that route”. Aonuma said that they “thought about it and decided that if we’re going to have a female protagonist it’s simpler to have Princess Zelda as the main character”. The idea was rejected because “if we have Princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do? Taking into account that, and also the idea of the balance of the Triforce, we thought it best to come back to this [original] makeup”. The idea of a female hero is not out of the question for a Zelda title, but it sounds like Aonuma and the team feel that it won’t be that simple.

    1. I don’t think Linkle was ever intended to be a main hero. She exists as a female character in a spin-off, and she’s not even the hero of time. She’s completely different than Link. It seems like now they’re thinking about how a female character would work as the main hero in a main game.

      1. No! I wish people would quit using things Nintendo didn’t even develop to say why this or that shouldn’t happen in a Nintendo developed Zelda game! Voice acting & playing as Zelda shouldn’t be banned because some shit company that didn’t know a damn thing about Zelda made shitty decisions with shit voice actors and shit writers! I honestly believe anyone that uses CD-i Zelda games or that god damn Zelda cartoon are ignorant fools that don’t even know Nintendo had nothing, NOTHING, to do with them!

  1. And it looks like Linkle will have to wait longer before she’s a canon playable character.

    I’m ok with this.

    1. I would like it if Linkle had her own spin off game where she was the main character. That way the main series stays with Link as a male. That’s how it should be. And with the spin off, the people who want a female are satisfied.

    1. No they shouldn’t. You don’t change established characters just because a few people (compared to the people who don’t want it) think a female needs to be shoehorned into a 30 year old franchise. Link has always been male.

      1. It’s like a fucking infection, really! Now people are wanting a god damn gay Captain America when he’s been established as straight for decades! Sure they can make Captain America gay… when Steve Rogers gives the mantle up to an actual gay character! Til then, fuck off! Next we’ll be seeing people want a male Samus when her being female is not only just an established fact but that Samus represents the first time a female character that didn’t need a man for help or protection and was a badass hero of a video game! You want a male hero in a game about a solo warrior fighting aliens, go play Halo! Not to mention it’s like rebooting the Alien franchise with a male lead as the hero! Step the fuck back! Not even the Alien prequel with a different name and new lead stepped away from a female character. I’m all for more gay & female characters but leave established characters alone. Want to push an agenda for more of those type of characters, make new ones! Like they did with Ghostbusters. The other crap with that movie not withstanding, least the women of that new Ghostbusters have different names and personalities.

        1. Thank you. Perfectly stated. It’s stupid enough they made Captain America Hydra. Like really? He’s been fighting them for over 70 years, but he’s really an agent for them? So damn stupid. I hate when established characters get changed around. Make me characters. It’s not rocket science.

          1. Not to mention he’s the moral compass of the Marvel Universe! He’s pretty much the Jesus Christ of Marvel! BUT… I’m not too worried. Give it some time and he’ll be back to the pure of heart guy we all know & love! After all, it’s a comic book! Every superhero goes through a point where they are the villain. Even Superman, the Captain America of DC, was a bad guy at one point or another.

          2. Oh & speaking of infection, I’m worried about Quadraxis. I think someone injected him with fanboyism. Or he’s getting way too into character with this Nintendo Commander thing. :/ Kind of blew up on him after he called me Stranga 2. Maybe I overreacted, maybe I didn’t. Here. Maybe you can tell me if I overreacted. Just look for the comment by etikasboyfriend. You can’t miss it. lol

            1. I read the conversation. Maybe you both went a little overboard. I’ve had disagreements with Commander in the past, but he did get better. He gained my respect over time. I don’t always agree with him to this day (although I often do), but we don’t get into huge fights about it. Will he defend Nintendo? Most of the time. But I’ve seen him go against them. Especially since last year’s E3. In this situation, it escalated quickly. Whereas Brandon Hardacre is a buildup, Commander and you to my knowledge haven’t had recent beef. Just this one argument that blew up really quick. And thus you didn’t have time to calm down from each other. And you both kind of just attacked. I’d say just don’t continue that conversation and decompress from each other. Cuz I’ve seen you too have positive conversations, so it’s not like you’re constantly bitter with each other, like you and Hardacre are.

              1. Today is not a good day, to be honest. I hurt my son today by accident, which bust his lip & knocked a tooth loose, so I haven’t been in a good mindset today. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry and makes me want to kick my own ass out of anger. ;-;

              1. She, or he?, rarely comments. When it does, it’s usually something along the lines of dick riding. :/

    1. Or they weren’t very into Japanese art where some male characters are drawn with feminine features.

  2. After 30 years of saving the world only to get reborn constantly in a weird woodland area with annoying fairies bugging him, I think Link deserves to get a life where he’s the prince of Hyrule, and sits back waiting for Zelda to go collect 3 gemstones, 10 chickens, 2 musical instruments -1 to control the weather and 1 that turns birds into water jugs – 24 heart containers, 8 pieces of shattered Triforce and 4 different swords – 1 that talks constantly – and saves him for a change.

Or they both get kidnapped and Tingle saves the day. Boom! :)

    1. As long as Link isn’t turned into a girl & Zelda isn’t turned into a boy, I don’t mind a Prince Link & a Hero Zelda. It’d make a great little side game… as long as they don’t turn Zelda into crying Zelda like they did with Peach. :/

      1. If someone was there as Tingle, I hope we get an article on here later saying someone dressed as Tingle got punched in the face & kicked in the nether regions. lol

  3. You get a thumbs up from me for knowing, and properly using, the terms Hero and Heroine.
Too many yokels and amateurs use the term Hero as a gender-neutral term these days, and as an author myself, that sends me into irk fits.XD

    1. I think some people are hesitant to use it these days because of heroin for some reason. Like how some people don’t use the term weed anymore when talking about annoying plants that shouldn’t be where you want them to be.

        1. I don’t know about heroin but I love me a heroine. It’s such a turn on to see a beautiful girl that can kick ass. xP

            1. Don’t forget the many other movies where she kicks ass like Salt, Mr. & Mrs Smith, some others! :D If she was younger than she is now, she would have been perfect to portray Samus in a live action Metroid movie since she’s got the bosom for the role and she has shown she can handle action movies.

                    1. Oh. That was actually my first choice, to be honest. But I went with Murphy because I thought she was hotter. Is it wrong I’m calling a dead woman hot? *shrug* It’s a compliment so I doubt she’ll mind.

                        1. Obviously when she was alive. xD Ew, no. Gross. *thinks about what if vampires are real & she is by chance one* I guess that depends on what kind of vampire we would be talking about here. xD *shifty eyes* Yeah. Things just got weird.

          1. Wow, really?
One letter e is keeping people away from using the right word for the right situation?
I truly fear for the literacy level of our country, if so…this alarmist and easily-triggered attitude really needs to just stop. It’s getting to the point where it’ll end up in causing some sort of disaster or riot that won’t end well for innocent lives.
I know that’s more than a little bit of a stretch, to base such a statement off of something like people being afraid of using Heroine because of the word heroin, but this world is already going straight to hell in a hand-basket as it is, so I’m not keen on underestimating how crazy it can get.XD

            1. In spite of our disagreements about video games & Nintendo, yeah. Our world is screwed if we don’t lighten up a bit soon.
