Aonuma Explained Why Link Is Right-Handed In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma explained why Link is not left-handed in Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Aonuma says that “in terms of right-handedness of things, when we think about which hand Link is going to use, we think about the control scheme. With the GamePad, the buttons you’ll be using to swing the sword are on the right side, and thus he’s right-handed”.

  1. But that has always been the case with every Zelda game (minus DS entries)… Not that I care, no problem with the different Link’s being different, but the explanation is weird

  2. I was just reading the comments on Nintendo Life and came across what appears to be a moderator. And they wrote this to some people:

    @LUIGITORNADO Why did you came to this site? You are always hating everything that Nintendo does on IGN for a long time, now you go to a Nintendo focused site to do the same.
    @rennandovale Your comment has been edited to remove unpleasantness. Please interact with other users respectfully and do not make personal attacks. Thanks.

    That is ridiculous. Trying to tell people they can’t criticize Nintendo? That site’s comment section has gone down the tubes real quick. Thank goodness Sickr allows more free thinking on this site. I stopped posting comments on that site, but still read them to get a gauge of opinions. I prefer this site over them and Wii U Daily, and this just amplifies it. WUD is incredibly slow with news, and NL has terrible comment rules. MNN all the way.

    1. ||Some that spews nothing but hatred…towards Nintendo in here…have also been banned before…||

      ||The difference is…the other bases are civilian…and a waste of tempus…||

      1. I only know of your friend Bomb Ass Bitch (don’t remember his make) and Bruce Lee being banned. This site is more lenient, usually first in news, and has a pretty good balance of opinions.

        1. ||The boy…was semi banned because…he scared the little children…||

          ||Bruce Lee…yes the cretin I got banned 3 times…for my pleasure…and of course because of its…shortcomings…||

    2. Yep, they are very tough. A few years ago, I got banned for joking about one of the guys playing the Smash Wii U demo. After pleading and pleading and apologizing with e-mails, they never unbanned me.

      Also, I fully agree. If people are supposed to be all lovey-dovey about Nintendo, what’s the point? I like this website because I get to read about what people truly think.

      1. I got told I was using profanity. I think I said ass and some other mild thing. They changed one of my things to “rusty rock.”Like, what the hell? It’s pathetic.

        1. Hahaha, rusty rock, are you serious?? To be honest, I used to think NL was top of the top. I came to MNN cuz I got banned in the fall of 2014, and while I was glad people expressed what they wanted, this place was garbage. There were trolls everywhere. Now it became much better, and has the perfect balance. Before, MNN was how it looked when Wold Link had to collect those vessels, and now it’s like when everything cleared up.

          1. Yeah. I don’t know if rusty rock is a British thing or what. It as weird haha. And nice metaphor. I I like that. I’ve been on both sites for a while, but not sure how long exactly. Between 2 and 4 years. Obviously I don’t have a good memory when it comes to that sort of thing haha.

    3. Wow. Miiverse is just as bad. I stopped talking about Nintendo on there for a reason. I guess the Nintendo Life losers run around Miiverse reporting anything that criticizes Nintendo for being hateful/bullying. And since the admins are retards that take things out of context & don’t even read certain posts/comments, those losers get their way & have those posts/comments deleted and eventually get certain people banned.

      Yes! King Sickr is a just & lenient ruler!

        1. Speaking of Miiverse, I don’t do much of anything on there now. I just go there to yeah pictures or comments/posts I like & talk about WWE with a small group of WWE fans every Raw Monday & PPV Sunday night. When Smackdown goes live again, I will probably be able to count Smackdown Tuesdays, too! :D

            1. AJ Styles, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Cesaro, Enzo & Big Cass, Vaudevillains, the Bullet Club, Baron Corbin, Apollo Crews, and some others I can’t recall. I’d include Brock Lesnar but he’s only ever around for big events as a big attraction. Kind of like how Christmas wouldn’t be as special if it was a regular thing every couple of months. On NXT, they have Finn Balor, Samoa Joe, Austin Aries, Shinsuke Nakamura, and some others I’m not aware of.

              1. I’ve heard of some of them (Brock I know all about because he was there when I was still watching). I think Roman Reigns has trouble getting over with the crowd if I’m not mistaken? Or is it Seth Rollins?

                1. It was Roman Reigns. Vince, like a fucking idiot, tried to turn Roman into Cena 2.0 a few times. I doubt I need to say more for you to figure out the rest. He’s been better with trying to make Reigns his own man, though.

                  Speaking of Rollins, after the split from The Shield and before his injury 6-7 months ago, he was being pushed as a huge fucking coward to the point he relied way too fucking much on help & outside interference. It was practically Hollywood Hulk Hogan of the NWO, but even worse! Shortly before his injury, they were slowly making him less of a wimp, though. But with him back, he’s been a coward again. Hopefully it’s just temporary because he’s still not 100% so they have him being a coward to protect him.

                    1. Uhm. Apart from the occasional brain fart in logic & shit, I’d say they are good… sometimes. You’re ability to hold back disbelief better be good, though.

    4. As for this article, if there aren’t motion controls, does it really matter which hand he uses for the sword? I can’t remember off the top of my head, but has Link been right handed in any non-motion control games? Or left-handed? I don’t recall it ever affecting me in any games which hand he used aside from Skyward Sword.

      1. Line was actually right-handed in the original Legend of Zelda game. I’m surprised that wasn’t the reason given, considering that they’re trying to bring back its spirit in full 3D.

        1. I know its been months since you posted, I just thought I should let you know that Link was left handed in the original Legend of Zelda game. Miyamoto did this on purpose. He was only right handed when facing to the East because it used less memory to swap a sprite, rather than make a new one. Link was confirmed left handed by Link to the Past’s player guide.
          The real issue here is the explanation to making him right handed. ALL controllers from ALL systems have control buttons on the right side, but this didn’t cause any sort of plight for 30+ years until now.
          I mean, the true reason is because he is right handed so it didn’t cross his mind.
          It doesn’t seem very pivotal and it seems arbitrary but when you grow up being told that you are wrong simply because of which hand comes natural to you, it really becomes noticeable when you see a left handed HERO saving the world and junk. It is something that sticks with you and grows with you.
          I was literally forced to do everything right handed growing up because I was told I was wrong. Seeing a hero be left handed made a big impact.

          1. I’m sorry you had to deal with idiots that thought being left handed was wrong or evil or whatever bullshit they claimed because it was different.

      2. In some games, Link is ambidextrous because depending on the direction sprite Link is facing, he’ll sometimes swing with his left hand or his right hand. But that was more of a technical problem than an actual fact on Link’s sword hand. It was nice to theorize what hand he really used, though. lol But like another said, Link was originally right handed. I’d be nice if he went back to being left handed, though, since being left handed is rare and I like Link to be different from others. *just wishes he’d talk more* lol They need to find a voice for Link that a good majority can like then store the guy’s DNA so when he dies, they can clone his voice. *has sudden urge to play more Witcher 3* I need to hurry the hell off the internet so I can play Witcher 3. I didn’t play it last night because I was too busy enjoying myself on here. Like Xenoblade Chronicles, Witcher 3 is one of those games I could play multiple times in a row. But I can’t right now cuz of my backlog. Must. Clear. It. Up. Before. Zelda. @.@

        1. Geez. I really don’t pay attention to which hand he uses. He was ambidextrous in some games haha? Wow I’m oblivious. I know he was left-handed in a lot of games, but only because of people on the internet. I don’t have much of a backlog. I’m finally getting around to finishing up Twilight Princess HD. Then I have Star Fox Zero to try and 100%, if the controls don’t make me stop playingv again. Maybe give Project Guard a try. That’s about it. I guess Virtual Console.

    5. Ah, yes.

      The buttons used for the sword are on the right. This is exactly the reason why every single Link to date has been right-handed.

      Oh wait.

    6. This doesn’t make sense.

      So they were fine about him being left-handed before (excluding Skyward Sword) even though the control scheme didn’t match up until now?

      Just why?

      1. Well to be fair, Link being left-handed has become sort of a character trait for him. It’s part of who he is. They’ve only ever made him right-handed when they had to.

    7. Okay, the reason for the switch is lame. But does it really matter whether Link is left or right handed? Are we being robbed of an excellent game experience because Link is holding his weapons with a different hand?

      1. I am not super angry about the swap, but I don’t expect you to understand.
        Growing up and being told that you are WRONG for something you have no control over is really insane. Being forced to use your right hand when it is painful, uncomfortable, and difficult. Then seeing this hero save the world with his left hand and realizing that it isn’t wrong. It makes an impact.
        I mean, I can only hope that we live in a society today that doesn’t have teachers forcing lefties to use their right, so it really may not make a difference. It is just nice to know that even some heroes share a trait that you were told is wrong, filthy, etc.

    8. Lame reasoning. Like everyone else has said, he’s been left handed forever even though the buttons are on the right side of the controller. I think he’s just trying to hide the real reason… that it’s actually a direct sequel to SS. Same Link, same handedness. That’s my theory.

      1. That’s an interesting theory. I know that Aonuma and Miyamoto were trying to avoid answering questions that involved the main story so that could make sense.

      2. I like that theory since I’m wanting this new Zelda to be a Skyward Sword sequel. With how big & expansive the world is in the game, I want this to be taking place before Hyrule was founded by the first King Hyrule. Plot twist: Link IS the first King of Hyrule! Link *insert kickass middle name here* Hyrule! I mean, it would explain why Link is always born a Hylian because the first Link hooked up with Hylia’s reincarnation Zelda.

        1. Oh boy I’m probably pissing off every person that goes rabid at the idea of Link & Zelda being a couple having children and shit because they hate the idea of Link & Zelda being a couple. *shrug* Fuck ’em.

            1. So glad I didn’t watch the Zelda cartoon or even knew about the Zelda CD-i games back then. Otherwise, I’d probably hate the idea of voice acting in Zelda as much as the next person that had the misfortune of seeing or knowing of them.

              1. Whoa whoa whoa haha. I enjoyed the cartoon. Course I enjoyed the Mario Bros cartoon also, but when I watched it again as an adult, I didn’t like it. Let me keep the fond memory of my childhood alive haha.

    9. Before this article, I didn’t even notice Link was right handed. xD I guess I was too busy being blown away by the huge departure from many Zelda traditions.

    10. And? So what? Link has been left-handed for decades. Why mess this up now? I grew up with the Legend of Zelda games. As a lefty, I’ve always enjoyed having my kind represented in games. If you look at the big, customisable AAA games, like Fallout, Dark Souls, or The Elder Scrolls, you can customise your character as much as you want, you can even make it look just like you, but you can never change its dominant hand. As a lefty, this has always jarred with me. This has denied me an immersion into the gaming world that most other gamers have.
      I’ve always treasured my experiences playing as a left-handed protagonist, which is essentially limited to the Legend of Zelda franchise due to so few games with left-handed protagonists. That they’ve chosen to drop one of their character’s trademark traits is heartbreaking, especially since it was chosen for no authentic reason. Every other Legend of Zelda game features a left-handed Link (except for the Wii port of Twilight Princess, due to the Wii’s motion controls); why did Nintendo choose to stop this tradition here?
      I’ve always loved the Legend of Zelda, but I guess my path with it stops here. As much as I might want it, I will not buy this game unless they release an option to make Link left-handed, as he should be. As Shigeru Miyamoto intended.
