E3 2016: Nintendo Provided A Quick Recap Of “Just A Few of Today’s Highlights”

Here’s a quick recap of just a few of today’s highlights. For even more details about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, visit http://e3.nintendo.com/videos to watch individual Nintendo Treehouse: Live segments and more.

  • Shrines of Trials: More than 100 of these locations are scattered around the world for players to find, and in some cases finding the Shrines can be a puzzle in itself. As a result, Shrines offer more compact challenges that can be solved in a variety of ways. In order to earn a Spirit Orb from the monks who designed these challenges, players must overcome challenges or solve puzzles.
  • Runes: While exploring Shrines, players can earn Runes. For instance, the Magnesis Rune can help Link lift and toss metal objects. The Remote Bomb has two different types of bombs: rolling spherical ones and cubical ones that stay in place. The Stasis Rune briefly stops moving objects, while the Cryonis Rune freezes water and causes an ice pillar to appear.
  • Weapons and Combat: The game contains a wide variety of weapons, many new to the series. Players must find weapons or take them from enemies, but weapons wear out as you use them. Players can also time offensive and defensive maneuvers to temporarily slow time and connect with a flurry of strikes against their opponent.
  • Food: In another break with conventional gameplay for the series, players hoping to replenish their hearts or score some easy rupees will come up empty when they cut grass. Link can forage for a variety of foods in his environment, including apples and mushrooms. He can also hunt for food. Consuming uncooked foods gives him a modest health increase, but cooking different kinds of ingredients together will result in dishes with different effects, such as cold or heat resistance, for a limited amount of time.
  • Climate: From snowy areas to desert heat, Link must dress appropriately for the weather. If he needs to stay warm, he can don appropriate clothing, warm himself with a fiery torch or even eat food to maintain his body temperature and his health. Link also needs to be careful during lightning storms – if he is equipped with metal equipment during a downpour, he can find himself attracting deadly lightning bolts.
  • amiibo Compatibility: A new series of detailed amiibo figures specific to the game were announced this morning, and Treehouse staff finally revealed how the Wolf Link amiibo from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD will connect to the game. When players tap a Wolf Link amiibo to the Wii U GamePad controller, Wolf Link will join Link to attack enemies on his own. He initially has three hearts, but players can raise his heart count by completing the Cave of Shadows and carrying over the save data from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. Wolf Link can be summoned once a day, and disappears when his hearts run out. However, you can use Wolf Link again the next day.
  • Nintendo NY: Hundreds of fans visited the Nintendo NY store in New York today to get their first look at The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in person. Through June 19, 500 lucky fans will get the chance to play the game, and game experts from Nintendo will conduct guided demos for others to watch, bringing the Nintendo experience at E3 to the East Coast.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is scheduled to launch simultaneously for both Wii U and Nintendo’s next system, code-named NX, in 2017.

    1. I wish Witcher 3 had done this. Instead, you can find cooked food by looting stuff or you can buy cooked food from stores. :/ You can’t even cook the raw meat you get from killing wolves, deer, bunnies, dogs, cats, & other wild life animals. Monster parts are not used for cooking but for alchemy & crafting weapons & armor.

  1. I’m expanding all day long. And plus the much I expanded yesterday due to Sony.

My dong will be forever expanded. Is this healthy?

  2. Wasn’t half bad for the first day. I was really worried after how ridiculously slow paced the Pokemon demo was that the Zelda demo would end up boring as well, but those worries went out the window as soon as Aonuma pretty well directed it straight into the gameplay with no boring filler.

  3. 1. Shrines of Trials: What are these spirit orbs for? I hope it’s for crafting if that’s a thing in this game.

    2. Runes: Hm. Any runes for crafting… if that’s a thing?

    3. Weapons and Combat: Not sure how I feel about that. If anything, it means we probably won’t get the Master Sword til very late in the game. And since New Game+ normally doesn’t let you carry stuff over in Zelda, yeah. :/

    4. Food: I’m perfectly okay with this. I came across a picture of Link eating a heart the other day on Pinterest when he was eating some food next to one of the Twilight Princess kids. The kid found a rupee in his food. lol Wait. Cooking different kinds of ingredients together can create effects such as cold or heat resistance? Is that in Skyrim or did they get that idea from Monster Hunter? Anyway, I’m so looking forward to collecting a shitload of apples! I’ve always imagined apples being one of Link’s favorite fruits! I got some fanart of Link where he’s in some fancy Valkyrie type armor with a cape eating an apple.

    5. Rupees: The fact we can’t get rupees from cutting grass means finding chests with rupees is going to be an important thing to do in this Zelda game! Yes! Finding rupees in chests always felt kind of pointless since you could easily get more rupees, usually more than you find in chests, by cutting grass & smashing pots & rolling into/blowing up crates.

    6. Climate: To those wondering about weather conditions, here you go! Anyway, I’m glad the weather physics will be realistic in this game. Not many games this. Better remove that awesome armor & sheathe your metal sword if you don’t want to get fucked up by nature’s electricity, bitch! lol Hopefully enemies will be in just as much shit if they have anything metal on during a lightning storm.

    7. amiibo Compatibility: I hope the Wolf Link amiibo gets released by itself & we can find ways to boost it’s hearts without TP HD. Wait. What if some of us don’t want to keep our Wii U to play TP HD to use our Wolf Link to it’s fullest ability because we chose the NX version & got rid of our Wii U? Is this an accidental leak from Nintendo telling us the NX will be backwards compatible? Or something else entirely? *shrug* Guess we’ll find out at a later date when they reveal the NX.

    8. Nintendo NY: 500 lucky bastards indeed! Then again, maybe not so lucky because then they’ll be wanting the game more than us because they’ve actually played some of it & didn’t want to let the controller go for the next person to play! xD

  4. Really great info on Zelda. The game far exceeded my expectations. Glad they’re adding many new elements to set it apart from many other “open-world” games, as well as other Zelda titles. This is the most fresh take on Zelda in quite a long time. Loving the art style as well.

    1. The thing to make this better is if they took a step further out of their comfort zone with Zelda tradition & actually allow Link & Zelda to hook up. Or since they prefer Link to be an avatar for the player to control, give us not just Zelda but other love interests for us to have Link hook up with. Ocarina of Time & Skyward Sword both gave us perfect chances to headcanon Link with Zelda & Malon or with Zelda & Peatrice. Least til Twilight Princess came along & gave us the impression Link might have got with Malon because of the fact his descendant, if not his son, was a ranch hand at a ranch/farming village. It might piss off the anti Zelda/Link people or the people upset with Fire Emblem taking the support thing that allows characters to hook up with other characters to the next step with the “waifu” stuff in Awakening & Fates but screw ’em.

      1. That’d be interesting. I wouldn’t be opposed to that. I really like the marriage system in FE myself lol. Adds more personality to the characters, imo.

        1. It was bound to happen sooner or later in Fire Emblem since even before Awakening, you could actually have characters hook up with others if you built their support up to S rank. Besides, the series is still roughly an strategy RPG but with the added bonus of letting you marry your characters.
