Activision Almost Outbid Microsoft For Rare

Xbox co-creator Ed Fries has revealed on the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered that Activision nearly managed to get the rights to Rare. Fries said it was looking increasingly likely that Activision would get Rare until Microsoft increased their bid at the very last-minute meaning that they took control of the company behind Banjo and Conker.

“So we put in a bid and then Activision outbid us, and it looked like we were going to lose the deal,” Xbox co-creator Ed Fries explained on the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered, which debuts tomorrow. And then at the very last minute Robbie increased our bid and we won the deal. And that was it,” Fries said, adding, “Who knows what could have happened with Rare.”

    1. No it wouldn’t, Activision has the tendency that f a game fails once (Nut’s and Bolts) they keep the game in hell forever and use it only when they can milk it, regardless of quality.

Hate Nut’s and Bolts all you want, but at least it’s a good game overall (it was carefully made), Activision wouldn’t have cared about that. In fact they would have milk Banjo Kazooie and Conker so much that we would hate both franchises and Rare would be then shut down and Activision would keep ALL of their IPs never to be seen again.

At least Microsoft gave us that Rare Collection on Xbox One for 60$

        1. So you would rather the game series milked until even YOU hate it then the IPs would never be seen again? Pfffft

                    1. Microsoft can’t do anything right you’re correct on that but if Activision treats IPs worse than Microsoft THAT’S sayin something.

    2. I would rather have Microsoft owning Rare than Activision. Microsoft let Rare do whatever they wanted, Activision would have milk Rare until it was worthless and then kill it and say “now we own their souls and there’s nothing you can do about it”.

    3. Seems like everyone in the comments forgot about the other IPs Rare has; the only others that come to mind being Battletoads & Perfect Dark (hell, on the Nintendo side, the DKC trilogy). Probably might have gotten a sequel or two to majority of the games + easier for Nintendo to re-release the DKC trilogy on the VC.

But then I saw the comment about “Skylanders”…and then I was glad Microsoft bought them first.

    4. I don’t see any lesser evil here. :/ Although, Perfect Dark might have been better off in Activision’s hands. As for the others, they probably would have been screwed.
