In 2013, Disney created a Mickey Mouse short named Tokyo Go, where Mickey takes a trip around Japan’s capital city. Within the clip, a small piece of footage features Mickey in a Mario-esque style, collecting coins to the famous Mario coin sound.
Just recently, Game Informer reached out to Shigeru Miyamoto, as they were curious to know his thoughts on Disney’s homage to Nintendo’s well known franchise, and it turns out that he didn’t actually know about it, “No, I haven’t seen it. I didn’t realise that was being done” Miyamoto advised. After Miyamoto saw the footage he said, “Is copyright an issue for them to use our sounds? [Laughs] It’s very flattering. We finally got a cameo together.”
Check out the short cartoon below, the Mario style footage can be seen around the 2 minutes 20 seconds mark:
When asked if he would feature Mickey Mouse in any of Nintendo’s games he shook his head and said, “They are very strict. [Laughs].”
Miyamoto has likened Mario to the iconic Disney character Mickey in the past, stating: “Since we first created Mario, people have compared him to Mickey Mouse. I’ve always said Mickey Mouse evolved with each evolution in animation. You saw Mickey Mouse each step of the way. From early on, I wanted Mario to be that character in the digital world, so that with each digital evolution, he was there to usher in the next era. I think that maybe when we release the next hardware system, you can look forward to seeing Mario take on a new role or in a new game.”
Disney Interactive’s Vice President also said last year that “hopefully, the day Mario meets Mickey Mouse is not that far away.”
