Sonic celebrated his 25th anniversary at a sold out event on Friday evening during San Diego Comic-Con held at the House of Blues.Today SEGA revealed two new Sonic The Hedgehog titles: Sonic Mania and an untitled original game for release on console and PC in 2017.

Sonic Mania brings fans back into the 2D world of platform games with nostalgic pixel-style art and core classic gameplay by reimagining iconic Zones and Acts from Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles, and adding in completely new Zones with all-new Acts, and bosses into the mix. Developed by SEGA of America and in collaboration with PagodaWest Games along with Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley, the game will be digitally available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in Spring 2017.

“Sonic Mania was born out of our fans’ love of the classic Sonic 2D platform games,” said Takashi Iizuka, Head of Sonic Team. “This type of collaboration is a first for SEGA and we hope everyone will be both surprised and delighted by this title. Sonic Mania has been a passion project for the entire team and we look forward to sharing more details about it later this year.  Having the game actually playable at the event itself tonight was testament to the dedication of the team behind it.”

Also, another original title was revealed at the end of the party. This epic title is being created by the Sonic Team, the same team that brought fans Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. Available at retail and digital stores for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo NX at Holiday 2017. Additional information will be revealed at a later date.

“Today brought thousands of fans together from all over the world to get a look at all the facets of our beloved Sonic the Hedgehog from his foundation in video games to music, TV, mobile, toys, fashion and beyond,” said Ivo Gerscovich, Chief Brand Officer of Sonic Pillar and SVP of SEGA of America.” This is only the beginning for Sonic and we’re happy our fans were here to celebrate this exciting new direction.”

Additionally it was revealed that the hit mobile game Sonic Dash has been downloaded over 200 million times. To celebrate Sonic’s anniversary, Sonic Dash has a special in-game event that includes the Green Hill Zone and Classic Sonic as a playable character. The event will last one week in which players can unlock the Green Hill Zone and Classic Sonic to continue to play with after the event is over.  The game is free to play with optional in-app purchases, and is available on the App Store, Google Play, Amazon Underground, and Windows Phones.

      1. Well, there is a movie coming out in 2017 starting the MLP cast and since Sonic had a recent partnership with Hello Kitty in the live event. It’s only a matter of time until Sega themselves put the Blue Blur in a future MLP: FiM Crossover someday.

Now if only Nintendo or Gamefreak were to do that with Pokemon on Lego?

        :D

      2. The new Sonic game looks like an amalgamation of Sonic 06 and Sonic Generations. I’m both scared and excited at the same time, not that it’s a bad thing since I’m personally excited for it. Just when everyone though that Sonic Mania was the only thing for the Blue Blur’s 25th anniversary.

      3. So it’s like Sonic Generations 2? Graphics certainly look state-of-the-art. I pray the gameplay matches.

      4. I'm just an Animal Crossing

Wow. I actually want to play this really bad. Those classic sound FX really got the nostalgia bug biting me.

      5. Great……another 3rd party game officially announced for the NX but I really hope Project Sonic plays as good as the trailer looks. I’ll be keeping an eye out for this to see how it progresses

        1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

          ||At least it has nothing to do with the garbage that is Sonic Boom…||

      6. Classic Sonic is back? Maybe it’s that Sega wants to make this as fanservicey as Generations years ago. As long as there isn’t a single Boom character in sight (No Sticks).

      7. yep the blue blur is back with his new adventures this is the new mainline sonic game we always been waited for. sonic 06 was a completely a waste of development since 10 years ago.

      8. So after missing out completely on Sonic 06 and getting an inferior Sonic Generations on 3DS, we are FINALLY getting a Sonic anniversary game for a Nintendo console.

        About freaking time.

          1. It is not the first. The first big publisher game official announced was Just Dance. Also, there are about 6 indie games already announced for the NX. Of course unofficially the first announced were Dragon Quest X and XI.

      9. Sonic Mania looks awesome; I’ve craved a new classic 2D Sonic title for quite a while. The Sonic 4 episodes were pretty crappy in my opinion, and Mania looks to be fixing all the issues those games had. And I have high hopes for Sonic 2017. I’ll save my hype for when they show gameplay. Colors was great and I enjoyed Generations and Lost World. Sonic Team hasn’t been so bad their past few games. Good time to be a Sonic fan.

      10. More QTE Sonic. Great, wake me when they remember that Momentum exists, I’m sick of Velocity-only, boost-to-win, react-don’t-think, homing-attack-as-QTE-only, Jump-Dash-makes-you-lose-all-speed, turn-your-brain-off-and-admire-the-visuals Sonic games.

          1. It has been heartbreaking 20 years to watch him die slow death.

I was getting excited for revival when they announced Nintendo partnership, but they managed to crap all over that opportunity.

              1. Tons? Maybe I can be fair and ask you to name half a dozen.
But anyways, it is pointless to argue opinions or tastes.
I have not liked a Sonic game since Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

      11. Looks like Sega is finally back on the right path with Sonic. Is Sonic Mania not for NX or Wii U though? And the project 2017 or whatever, is that not for Wii U?

        1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

          ||Project 2007 is so far only for the NX, there is no logic releasing it on the Wii U now or ever…||

      12. As the last two commenters said, I want to know why Sonic Mania is not listed as coming to ANY Nintendo Platforms (3DS, WiiU or NX)? That is the game here I MOST want to play.

          1. Maybe they are taking this “going back to what made Sonic great” to the point they won’t even release it on a Nintendo console. lol

        1. “Oh and Sonic Lost World doesn’t exist because we want to forget about the Deadly Six and Robot Tails.”
