Here’s A Rather Good Nintendo NX Mockup

NeoGAF member ChrisRo has put together a mockup of how he envisions the Nintendo NX to look based on the Eurogamer report that appeared earlier this week. You can check it out below complete with Chris’s ideas included.

  • The controllers aren’t detachable so that two people can play with them, that’s silly. They’re detachable because it makes this the perfect competitor to phones which really only suck because they don’t have proper controls, in which case it can be sold to young people buying their first phone which is where Nintendo’s handheld market is currently being gouged out. The idea that it’s “too hard”, and Nintendo should abandon their biggest market to go after the saturated home console market mid-cycle is ridiculous. You want something hard? Try selling a $400 console to people who already own one. Meanwhile we’re not going to run out of teenagers buying their first phones anytime soon and that could be a huge market for Nintendo.
  • With the controllers detachable, this could be one of the best VR solutions out there if sold with a Galaxy Gear-like headset and maybe a motion tracking device, because you could take the controller bits off, place the device into the headset and use the motion controls from those two controllers similar to Vive’s or Oculus’.
  • Why are people complaining about power? This is an example of Nintendo focusing on power for the first time in a long time – if they’re using the Tegra X2 especially, this is about the most powerful handheld you could possibly build. If Sony wanted to do their Sony thing of releasing a more powerful handheld right after to compete with it they would have a hard time. This would be the most powerful handheld ever, which is a huge departure from the DS and 3DS strategy.
  • Combining their handheld and home console software production will partly eliminate software droughts.

  1. that looks awesome but i know nintendo knows that by making something like that is not worth it, then again nintendo has made questionable choices that most of the time works, even if the product fails which i dont know how something can succeed but fails.

  2. Why hasn’t anyone realized that in order for this to work, the detachable controllers have to be able to attach to each other somehow or you won’t be able to use the twin sticks? Or are these controllers supposed to get their 2nd stick axis from motion control? Either possibility makes me cringe.

      1. With a traditional game controller like XBox or even Wii U Gamepad, you hold a single device and control the left stick with your left thumb and right stick with your right thumb. It would be crazy to hold 2 separate controllers in each hand and control the sticks like that. That’s just totally weird.I mean, the Wii had such a crazy thing with the nunchuck, but no thanks.

        1. I actually quite liked being able to separate my hands while playing with the wiimote and nunchuck. Not exactly the best controller, but super comfy to hold. You could literally scratch your nose without interrupting gameplay. I see no problem with that design as long as there will be a more standard controller for those who prefer it (a design like the gamecube controller gets my vote here)

        2. I'm just an Animal Crossing

Hahahhahaha!!!! You mean both controllers in one hand and the tablet in the other? Hahahahahahahga I never looked at that way. I’m sure that’s not how you hold it.
          “You’re holding it wronng”.

        3. have you uh, have you ever played a game on the wii? you know, that super popular system that had the controller separated? yeah, the stick worked perfectly fine without having it connected to something else other than the wire. also, check out the razer hydra, that works awesomely as well. it would work totally fine, and i would actually enjoy using something like this that lets me have my hands and arms in whatever position over a standard controller, so i could lay around however i want and play. #lazygamingftw

        4. I think that the two controllers will clip together, and the area between the buttons and the left/ right side of the controller, (depending which controller it is) will be thicker, so it feels like an actual controller. I do think the VR idea is brilliant though.

        1. ITS 2016 DUDE NOT 1996 A FEW BUTTONS AND TWO STICKS IS 5 GENS OLD

wii steam cntroller and gamepad are cutting edge dualshock and xpad are caveman controllers with clunky stiff out dated aiming and abillitys

this nx control will mimick srteam pad gamepad pro pad wii remote nunchuck ALL AT THE SAME TIME

I CONTROLLED METROID PRIME 3 LIKE THIS IN N2006 TWIN STICK FPS IS FOR JOKERS I CONTROLLED PES WII LIKE THIS I CAOULD CONTROL A WHOLE SOCCEWR TEAM IN REAL TIME MOVING MY PLAYER AND PLAYERS AROUND AT WILL

PS4 AND XBOX 1 YOUR STILL PLAYING LIKE A PS1 OR N64 THAT IS A DISGRACE

        2. I don’t get your point. They should have no trouble connecting both of the controllers to the device via bluetooth without any wires. If you don’t like the feel of having one controller in each hand, you could keep them attached to the device.

    1. Why? It would just be like playing any Wii Game that used Wiimote and Nunchuck, but without a cord between them, and with an analog stick on the Wiimote too.

Also .. what would stop them from clicking together by the same hooks they clip to the screen by? That would make an odd, squished together square shaped controller, but that worked fine for Gameboy in it’s day.

This might not be anything like what the NX actually is, and this design rumor could be completely wrong.

Regardless … I vaguely recall something about some kind of optional “Pro Controller” equivalent being mentioned at some point, though I’m not sure where.

  3. ok, clearly the final version well look better, and be a bit thicker.
what i like about this is that the X2 could be x86 since the current x1 is x64. (little confusing)
whats cool about the nintendo patent is that the home part of the NX could be modular.
the hand held could last for a while, but the home element could be updated every 2-3 years.
the hand held could play games on the go, and the home system could beef up power of those games once home.
could be amazing if thats the case. could make the NX last like 10 years with 2 or 3 updates in power to the home part of then system

    1. The current X1 is ARM(64), not x64 (pure x64 would be Itanium), all modern x86 processors are x86-64 and are usually shortened to x64, or AMD64 (since AMD came up with the instruction set). You are just confusing people, including yourself.

PS. even Intel has not managed to make an efficient x86 for small devices with no active cooling, no way nVidia can.

            1. I like it for drawing as well. But also, I think it’s perfect for Splatoon. It’s my favorite controller to use for a shooter, and I don’t use the gyro (don’t flame me Bowler AA lol).

    1. Except Nintendo clearly said that the NX is absolutely a Home Console. In fact, thats basically the only thing Nintendo has officially confirmed about the NX. All these rumors are bullshit, and will be proven bullshit soon enough.

    1. derp like a wii remote or any other wirless pad there both powered by internal recharge batterys or one has a battery and is nunchcuck wired to the second

      NOT ROCKET SCIENCE

  4. exactly what i told you people nx was 12 months ago and the first person to call a 1990s controler A CORE CONTROLLER GETS A FIVE FINGER PORK ROLL IN HIS NOSE

THE ABOVE PIC IS A CORE CONTROLER GYRO AND MOUSE AND PIONT AND STICKS AND BUTTONS = CORE

DUALSHOCK AND XPAD = 1990S TRASH

the above controller allo0ws wii remote and chuck steam controller and pro pad dualshock configurations

think of it as a pro pad a mouse a gamepad gyro and a wii all rolled into one

its a reverse wiiu with all the wiiu controllers molded into one set of controls and off course there will be pads like pro pad ands classic pad pro likely the wii connect slot found on new classic nes and wii remotes is included

  5. EACH SIDE IS THIS

a mini or whatever sized hybrid wii remote and nunchck that has a pro pad face layout so each can be used as a mouse motion remote

both can be used as a analog stick and buttons nes pad and both can be used together asa wii remote and nunchuck oir a split pro pad

its exacly were CUTTING EDGE GAMING WAS AND IS HEADING

put your dualshock in a time machine and send its sorry ass back to generation 4 we are entering generation 9

  6. steam pads track muse and gyro is CORE GAMING

wii remote and chuck is core gaming

gamepads 9axis is core gaming flexible revolutionary controls are core gaming

a pad from 196 is not core gaming ITS BLIND FANBOYING CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK GOES THE DUALSHOCK FROM THE 90S AS IT CRAPLY CONTROLS GAMES AND CRAPLY CONTROLS WEB BROWSERS AND CLUNKS AROUND PS4 OS LIKE A WW1 TANK

give me touch screen give me mouse point give me 3d control giuve nme options and mm precsion give me

    NINTENDO

  7. While this mock-up looks cool & stylish, I’m still not thrilled by a “handheld first, home console second” push. I love my 3DS but I prefer home console gaming.

Oh and who the hell let Bowler out of his cage this time!?

    1. Bowler has been posting a lot lately. What a buffoon. And personally, I don’t like this reunite either. I am not big into handhelds at all, and don’t want this rumor to be true.

      1. If it’s a home console doubling as a handheld, I’m completely cool with that because that means the thing is going to be very high tech which means power. If it’s a handheld first, that means weaker hardware from Nintendo… AGAIN!!

        1. Powerful home console doubling as a handheld? Hm… That sounds… kind of expensive to be honest. Probably won’t be that powerful for a console. But for a handheld, it’ll probably be decent.

          1. Yeah. I forgot Nintendo are ran by idiots that think the majority of people are cheap. And it’ll show they clearly haven’t been paying attention to why the PS4 & XBone are kicking their ass in most places.

            1. If it costs too much, that won’t be good though. Nintendo does not have the kind of third party support the others have to fall back on, so the value of their devices are viewed differently. Remember, Wii U was only $299 and people were still willing to pay more for a PS4 or Xbox One. It would probably be a bad move for them to have a high price tag. I don’t see the NX being any more than $400. And even that is stretching it a bit.

              1. Then Nintendo is just screwed either way for always being a gen behind. This is what they get for fucking up with their decisions with N64, GCN, Wii, and now Wii U. Like I said, I have no sympathy for idiots that dug their own grave.

                1. Yeah, pretty much. Lack of big third party games and focus on “gimmicks” led them up to this point. Nothing wrong with trying to be unique, but Nintendo often ignores things that gamers like in favor of trying to innovate. We still don’t know enough about the NX, but knowing Nintendo, they’re likely gonna keep doing what they do.

          2. Oh & it’s exactly why it’s too soon for a home console/handheld hybrid. It’s just another fucking gimmick they should hold off on til the shit is cheaper. People don’t want another console of having to pay over 100 bucks to replace a broken controller.

        1. He comes in every now and then and posts ramblings about how the Wii mote and motion controls are the greatest thing ever and part of evolution and saying anyone who likes standard controllers is a piece of shit of something to that effect. And his grammar is usually pretty crappy, and he always writes in all caps. Lately he’s actually been posting about different topics, and more often. But most of the time, he just looks like a crazed loon rambling about Wii Motes.

    2. I dont like the idea of Nintendo’s next handheld NOT being a clamshell. I dont see Nintendo abandoning the clamshell design, ever. I honestly believe all these rumors are bullshit. Nintendo said the NX was indeed a home console. I seriously doubt they would have said that if it was a portable Wii U gamepad with detachable controllers… Thats not a home console. Nintendo has already officially debunked these rumors, everyone is just too forgetful to realize it.

      1. I’m also a huge fan of the clam shell design. I miss the days when cell phones had it, too. Speaking of phones, I can’t wait til bendable screens and water proof outer shells expand from smartphones to other electronics. This mock up of that rumor could possibly be just an optional controller for the NX that improves on the Gamepad and I’d be cool with that.

      2. I still want to see what the system looks like for real and not by blueprints and rumors…such as above. Though I would still prefer a tv connection, a docking station that made a controller go on the go is a neat future like system…I just want to know if its true and if capcom will make the next monster hunter on the NX.

        1. I miss the communication system, and its sometimes hell on the small system on hunts. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the data transfer for monster hunter 3 U, best idea they ever had really. Just miss playing it on the big screen.

  8. Although I do have my doubts about Nintendo making the NX into a handheld/console device (assuming the rumors are true and this is only NX gaming device), I do like this mock up. Again assuming the rumors are true, maybe it won’t be that bad of an idea if Nintendo decides to use the Tegra X2 which would put the NX’s power a bit over the PS4 when in handheld form but with the SCD implemented it could raise it’s power level at least on par with the Neo. Although I still want a traditional home console, the NX hybrid device looks like it could do well so long as there are a constant flow of games and top notch marketing but I’m still on the fences about the concept (assuming the rumors are true) but it could work if executed right

    1. WHY IS AN EXACT POWER RATING SO IMPORTANT TO U

AT LEAST NEO WHY NOT SLIGHTLY LESS WHY NOT A BIT MORE YOU ARE ALL EING DRAGGED DOWEN A DRAIN PIPE THRU A COW FIELD INTO A MENSREST ROOM ACROSS THE FLOOR COVERED IN SHIT AND PISS

BY A MEANINGLESS FLOPS RACE WEN EVERY SSYETM IS HD AND EVERY SYSTEM IS CAPABLE PS1 AND PS2 WERE BY FAR THE WEAKEST CONSOLES IN THOSE GENS DID IT STOP SINY SELLING MORE NO

GROW UP AND GROW OUT OF THIS NONSESNE

  9. I actually really like this. I just hope hope that we get circle pads instead of those analog sticks so that it fits in my pocket a bit better, but to be honest, that’s my only gripe.
If this is Nintendo’s NX, then I am on board.

  10. The idea that it could double as phone as well sounds very interesting, but the thickness of the device and the probability that it has a low resolution could interfere with sales. If it had i resolution similar to that of the ps vita than it might be possible, but then they might not be able to have a long battery life or run games like breath of the wild well.

  11. My only real concern is that nintendo’s main everything system won’t be satisfying enough. I really don’t want to have to also grab a ps4 down the line because this is cool but kind of minimal. I don’t know how to really explain it, even with the scale of the new zelda a handheld first platform is sort of a buzzkill. Then you get into worrying about the main handheld component, about whether you should really be taking it places, but then also feeling like you are wasting it by leaving it in the dock all the time. Whatever they make it will have good games and all that happy bullshit that means you have to buy it, but I don’t think this is exactly the best way to do it I just see a lot of holes in it. Again we will have to see it, will have great games and etc. etc. sucking their fucking cock etc. but handheld first does overall cheapen it greatly in my opinion. Not saying it would be bad at all, but I just think it would be way less significant.

    1. Most likely, this is just the portable portion of the Nintendo NX rather than the main system.
The NX Home Console will be more powerful than current generation and possible be on par with the PS4 Neo. The handheld itself can connect to the Home Console version of the NX and you’ll be able to boost the performance of the NX as well as playing some NX Portable exclusives on your TV.

    2. For me it’s particularly sad because it would imply they have finally given up on home consoles :/

Imagine, we’ll never ever more feel the thrill of playing Mario 64 for the first time. You know, a new gen Nintendo game that blows our minds. Sony and Microsoft had their fair shares of blow-your-mind moments, but they never did things the way Nintendo does.
3DS, DS, and GBA were such a fun blast for me, but no handheld will ever give me this feeling, even if we’re talking about portable BotW. It’s just not the same. I’ve been kind of having a mini breakdown over this, which is just fucking utterly silly haha.

      1. wrong there moving forward into the future its not leaving home consoles its starting a new direction its not abandaning console in defeat

its being first to the future market and tech NES grabbed hold of the gaming non computer market

nx will grab hold of the non smart phone laptop tablet market ps ansd xbox are stuck in od money and loosing billions

the future is not big boxs and clunky controls and power sucking at the plug socket the future is small efficent devices IT IS ALREADY HAPPENING

NX WILL BE TYHE NES OF THE FUTURE LOOKING BACK AS NES WAS IN THE OLD WORLD THIS IS NOT LEAVING GAMING ITS EMBRACING IT NINTENDO LEADS EVERYONE ELSE FOLLOWS

        I GARANTEE IT

        1. These rumors are bullshit bro. Your getting all worked up for nothing. Nintendo would never abandon their handheld clamshell design for that monstrosity in the pictures up above. Nintendo already said NX was home console. You’ll see in a few days when these rumors end up being fake… like they are.

      2. HOW IS INCLUDING EVERY CUTTING EDGE CONTROL SYSTEM

AND EVERY CONCEPT F GAMING COMBINING IT INTO A SMALL FORM FACTOR LEAVING THE CONSOLE MARKET ITS NOT LEAVING ANYTHING ITS CRATING A NEW MARKET JUST AS NES DID

STOP THIS NOT SEEING THE TREES FOR THE WOOD VISION YOUR HAVING A SEE THINGS OUTSIDE THE BOX

YOU LIKELY SAID WII WAS A FAIL AND NINTENDOS LAST SYSTEM TOO,LOOK WERE THAT GOT YOU

      3. I think it would rather mean they’re switching focus on handhelds instead rather than giving up on consoles. IIRC, Nintendo said they do not plan to stop making consoles anytime soon.

    3. SO A BOX WITH A 5 GEN OLD CONTROLLER IS BETTER THAN NX CONCEPT ARE YOU CRAZY

SO ON PS4 YOU CAN PLAY FIFA OR PES IN THE EXACT SAME WAY YOU DID ON PS1 2 3

ON NX YOU COULD GRAB FIFA OR PES OR OTHER NEW WAY FOOTBALL and plaY ON THE MOVE IN YOUR BED IN A TENT WITH STICKS AND BUTTONS BUT ALSO TOUCH SCREEN ALLOWING PLAYS NO PS4 CAN EVER DO

THEN RETURN HOME TO THE LIVING ROOM OR BEDROOM OR GAMING ROOM PLUG INTO THE TV AND ENJOY CUTTING EDGE CONTROL OF THE WHOLE TEAM WEITH THE GYRO MOUSE AND MOTION COMBINED WITH THE STICKS AND BUTTONS AND ENJOY HD FOOTBALL WITH BETTER THAN PES WII CONTROLS AND ALSO ONLINE

NX IS FAR FAR FAR MORE CAPABLE THAN A PS4 NO MATTER HOW MANY CPUS IT HAS ITS EMBREACING FORWARD THINKING PLAY LIKE WII LIKE WIIU BUT DOING IT IN A WAY THAT IS ATTRACTING EVERYONE IN MAINSTREAM

I FAIL TO SEE HOW PUSHING BUTTONS ON A DUALSHOCK AND WATCHING CUT SCENES IS BETTER THAN THAT

  12. I do like this mockup too. It’s pretty neat. But I wonder where this leaves the next console? This NX thing is confusing because it’s supposedly some kind of handheld. But then, it’s also a console? And people are saying that it would get all Nintendo’s games. So what would the console do? Just let you play on a bigger screen? Maybe have features that are exclusive you can’t do with the handheld? My brain hurts. All this… thinking. Lol.

  13. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

    ||As always you, the human cattle, cannot think or see further than your misguided delusions…||

    ||This entire flawed creation is based on a simple drawing made by some irrelevant civilian who posted his silly picture on twitter…||

    1. That was never a thing. That was just some company speaking about a theoretical future mobile handheld from Nintendo

      1. i would have thought if it was a thing, that this would have been the handheld part and the NX was more console based. anyways im not believing until i hear nintendo at end of August / Sometime in September if the rumours are to be believed (surely they can’t wait any longer if it is due to release in march?!?)

        1. I could have sworn I heard that Nintendo would release 2 NX devices next year, maybe the console part has yet to be patented and this portable device will use the console part as a stationary port that will allow the NX to have more gpu and cpu power when it comes to a console experience!? Don’t take this as fact though, because I could be extremely wrong and just misread it somewhere.

  14. Where will the cartridges be inserted, how large are the cartridges, will it support external memory for those who buy digital only (I don’t like digital media, but I don’t want those who prefer it to be left out), will it be region free when it comes to playing games from other regions, are they planning to release a seperate NX device aside from this that increases the power for display on larger tvs at a constant 60fps, will it be backwards compatible with 3DS cartridge games and upscale 3ds games onto tvs ( for every MH fan that always wanted this for 3ds), and will this thing be capable of couch co-op? I know this is still a rumored design, and not verified, but my questions are still important none the less.
Aside from that I’m buying this day one, because this is exactly what I wanted the PS Vita to be capable of, by allowing to play handhelds on a tv for a more comfortable experience:D

  15. Nintendo Heretic Hunter Melfice

Quadarixs is right though it’s not the real thing. Plus if it was Nintendo would make him take it down

  16. Looks like a Wii U gamepad. Should I remind you all how that went? Does anyone need sales or needs some fact as to how well that went? This doesn’t look good. All they need to call it the Wii U Mii

  17. Galactus The Planet Devourer

The suspense is really high. I wonder what the final official reveal be like? I’m so curious. This is how you do marketing damn it! Don’t you see what they’re doing? They got us! Haha

  18. While its interesting and cool, I’m over the gimmicky crap that comes with Nintendo console’s. The actual design probably isn’t far off. I wanted power, a solid regular controller and amazing looking and playable games that only Nintendo can* deliver.

I’m not saying the game’s won’t be beautiful and mind blowing fun, but I am saying that the spirit of Nintendo has been put into a position where they don’t come out of the gate swinging full power. And they most definitely could.

Idk, the coverage is going to be nuuuutz.

I am excited for that! :)

  19. Galactus The Planet Devourer

I just don’t know what to think anymore. I wonder what Nintendo will release and I’m surprised they’ve remained silent as long as they have been considering it’s supposedly releasing in 8 months! wow!
I never thought the silent treatment would have me stirring in my seat this much.
