Nintendo NX Rumoured To Use Nvidia’s Pascal GPU Architecture

With Nintendo NX details scarce it should be no surprise that more information is coming out of the woodwork. The latest unconfirmed rumour is that Nintendo’s next generation gaming platform the Nintendo NX will use Nvidia’s Pascal GPU architecture. Of course we won’t know whether this is true until the machine is officially unveiled by Nintendo later this year.

    1. That the NX will have Nvidia X2 and not X1, which should be huge. The Tegra X2 far overpower XB1 and PS4 at its full power according to the numbers Nvidia provided for the Nvidia Drive PX.

The most powerful version of the Drive PX has a dual X2 and delivers 8 Teraflops, while the less powerful has dual X1 and delivers 2.3 Teraflops.

      1. the xbox one gives out about 1.6 TF, and the ps4 gives out about 1.4 TF. but the xbox OS uses a bit of that power. the X1 definitely is not more powerful then the xbox one. BUT the Pascal Tegra would move it JUST past the xbox one in power, BUT not even close to the Scorpio (who knows what the NEO is, sony wont say)

also keep in mind the NEO is coming out this year, but even the head of xbox said they could still add on to that 6TF of power in scorpio, they made a promise to make the most powerful gaming system. if they NEO comes out at 4TF Scorpio well probably stay at 6TF, but if NEO is 5TF then Scorpio well probably move up to 8TF.

that all said, this would be a monster hand held. either way.
this news everyone keep forgetting is that BIG patent which basically well turn the home element of NX into a modular system that can change out every few years to boost power.

        1. How do you two read information? You can’t gauge how fast the Tegra X2 would be based on the PX2 slides because the TFLOP counts we have are from the two dedicated Pascal GPUs they’ll be connected to not from the X2s themselves. Also the 8 TFLOPS number is Double-precision floating point which is almost useless for games. What’s more relevant is their single and half precision numbers.

Also the Xbox One does 1.31 TFLOPS not 1.6, and the PS4 is 1.84 TFLOPs not 1.4 and the OS doesn’t use any of that power because you don’t have to draw the OS interface in the background. It DOES use two CPU cores though.

NEO isn’t coming out in 2016 but in 2017. Also the NEO being at 5 TFLOP isn’t going to make Microsoft push the Scorpio to 8. They do have a ceiling for how much they’d want to sell the console at and making it more powerful would change the cooling they’d use and power supply.

And lastly, this handheld is barely a handheld, it’s a TABLET because the X1 is a TABLET SoC that needs a TABLET sized battery.

And we saw like 5 patents and most don’t or can’t apply to this so why would you think the supplemental computing device would apply to this? Also, do you know what a device like that would be able to do? It would distribute computational tasks and resources between the two devices but it would only be able to help with things like physics and AI NOT graphics not unless there’s a high bandwidth physical connection between them and it would run on a separate power supply.

          1. So then, what do you think the NX will actually be and what will it be able to do? The handheld isn’t the selling feature. There is definitely going to be Some hook and tangible interactive element to it IMO. Not necessarily a gimmick, but a compelling interactive/engaging element. I am
            Stoked for it.

        2. More accurately, it can increase its processing power. If said device actually does come to market (whether in box or sold separately), it could serve as an elegant solution to the problem that resulted in PS Neo and One S/Scorpio.

                    1. the logic of the fake shuhei is silly: is wrong to defend nintendo, is right to defend a self racist who makes fun of dead people and talks nonsense about Nintendo.
I think the fake shuhei (cambez, the orange) calmed down when he played splatoon.

  2. I know little of the tech side but from what I just read Pascal architecture will need a better chip than the Tegra X1. Anyone care to verify?

Mind you, this rumour is probably made up…

    1. terga x2 witch is likely the same or lalmost the same as the PARKER SOC or PARKER TEGRA if you like being used by nvid,in the motor industry for self drive cars and in car systems…

its a 2 denvor core 4 a57 core cpu 6 core total the denvor core is a hugely boosted old skool arm with big gflops and instruction per clock boosts and bigger catch memory very custom and per core perfomance is great (think aple arm how there better than off the shelf) ARMS

so its 2x denvor 4 x arm a57 hen theres a pascal tegra gpu the chip is said to be 2x x1 so if its a parker or a x2 like a parker it should be 2x x1 if not more take into account what ram is used and bandwidth will also be a factor

    2. Well, Pascal can range in performance, but Nvidia’s latest Pascal GPU the GTX 1060 can out perform the RX480 and is above the 6TF mark.

This could mean that the Home Console will be running a slightly underclocked version of the GTX 1060, whilst the handheld portion will use a Custom Tegra X chip but I doubt it’ll be X2.

    1. Pascal is nVidias new GPU design. The Tegra is a system on a chip using and ARM CPU and a nVidia GPU. Tegra X1 used Maxwell, the previous GPU design. CPUs based on the ARM instruction set are usually more efficient in low power environments.

  3. If Nvidia is making the GPU OF COURSE they are going to use pascal! WTF? Name one console Nintendo have released without integrating their own spin on the chips. You can’t. For this reason alone even if it was using a “Tegra X1” you could bet your ass it would not just be that! It would Be TegraX1NXV1 or some shit like that lol Meaning, It will have power and performance and again if it’s Nvidia, it’s pascal architecture.

  4. Those LAST so-called “real” rumors were some of the first that made me lose some interest in the NX. Because I do NOT want a handheld hybrid. And I hated how it made it sound as if the handheld part was the biggest emphasis. I want the major console to be the big emphasis. I want it to blow the Wii U away (not to mention, blow the PS4 and Xbox One away. But I doubt it will do that). It’s time for some REAL NX news. Not just more pointless rumors.

      1. Sorry, Billy…. but it’s not wise to judge an unreleased video game system to the HD twin towers. We have no confirmation or data on the Nintendo NX. You’ve just set yourself up for disappointment. Reserve your judgement AFTER Nintendo’s next generation system’s launch next year… THEN you make the call.

  5. I might be in minority, but I don’t particularly believe that big NX-rumour, about it being a pad with detachable sides from EuroGamer, there’s something that feels… off about it.
I might be wrong, but because I feel like that this doesn’t seem likely either

      1. I agree, it would be to similar to the Wii if it is indeed used as controllers, but probably with worse battery time (which is one of the bigger problems with the Wii U gamepad)..
I don’t think that the hybrid-concept is a bad idea, but I’m not sure about this execution

      ||It’s probably another misunderstood quotation again from these imbeciles…||

      1. Indeed Commander. I trust the more intelligent position is to await real information.
We all know that “Leave Luck to Heaven” is in euphemism with “Let All Good Things be handled by Nintendo”. And so we shall!

    1. Wii U already did wonders with performance per watt.
They could use AMD 14nm chip and reach about the same results.

        1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

          ||Most likely power consumption as it had the lowest this generation by far…||

        2. I think it drew 30 watts at max.
Thats about 3 to 4 times less than PS4.
And PS4 does not justify the used watts in performance comparison, think xbone drew little bit more than ps4 as well.

          1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

            ||At lowest I think it was around 15-16 watts, the Xbot machine draws about 3-4 more watts than the PS4…||

        1. yes, I was thinking of gpu’s.
I have not had the time to look at AMD cpu’s for a while, but didn’t amd announce last year that they were working on cpu chips for next generation console(s)?
Though I do not think AMD can do the same watt/performance as wii u had with their cpu’s.

      1. You are correct. I ran the WiiU on a solar powered, 600 watt battery for over 3 hours, and the X1 didn’t even make it an hour.
And what people seem to be missing, is that the chips and hardware won’t be pushing their limits on minimal power. It’s like using a HAM Radio, you’re only as good as your maximum available wattage.

        1. I’ve had Wii U overheat only once.
Breathing holes were blocked by dust and I was playing Bayonetta 2 maybe at 3rd hour.
They could have easily drawn more power from those chips, but they chose to go energy efficient.
“power” was really the least of reasons why third party support fell short though.

  6. Galactus The Planet Devourer

So does that mean it will get all the 3rd party support? Rainbow Six, street fighter, Mortal Kombat, racing SIM, GTA?!

  7. This means basically nothing because a lot of people speculated about it when first rumours about Tegra started a few months ago and even in recent rumours people speculated about being Tegra X2 and not X1.

I wrote this article a few days ago trying to get a bit deeper into the possible implications of that.
    https://medium.com/@theSUBVERSIVE/a-speculation-exercise-over-the-new-nx-rumours-85f4ac3a7f76

My conclusion though it that it doesn’t matter what chip, CPU or GPU Nintendo will use. If you use the rumours, Nintendo statements, devs statements, etc. you can get an outline of the NX and it should be pretty good power wise, be it for the handheld, hybrid or home console, most likely the Dock for hybrid function might be the so said gimmick. Same cartridge as the single media for all devices, so it can be played at home or on the go.

I think that rumours about hardware won’t help much from this point on until the announcement.

  8. They never said it was going to be a hybrid, but instead two separate devices with similar power and architecture. Of course the more powerful device will be the home console version while the slightly weaker device will be a handheld console.

Which also supports the idea of using cartridges, since they can be used on both devices and have save data synchronized between both devices. Using cartridges is also convenient to bring on the go (unlike UMD) if you’re going to play the same on the the handheld device.

If that concept is true, I’ll be hyped so much!

  9. I’m with Super Metal Dave 64
All these rumors are false.. and we need to just wait on Nintendo to prove them correct or what ever.
I personally rather Nintendo be working with AMD than with Nvidial.. and AMD has yet to discuss the third contract they have for their chipset… thing…
Sorry, my brian is not working too well… i’m still sleepy..

    1. The rumors don’t fit to what Nintendo has said before. They are looking to surprise gamers and I for one, am not surprised in the slightest.
I believe this NX console is radically different than the Wii U. If this controller/hybrid console is legit, it’s just a portion of the NX. The console “dock” is the mystery here.

  10. What you guys are forgetting is that the Pascal chip is basically from the Monique series. So the GPU soc probably has a Bonjour architecture! Not only that. In a handheld it could also be overclocked because of the rumored smart QoL air cooling capabilities of the NX HW. If you jog while playing you can increase your performance by 2 tflops. So if they add the Monique capabilities by merging X1 and 2 into a fusiondriven NX MK2 chip it should easily outperform Matrix and Subzero. If you add the legit possibility of an NWA driven Run AMD chip in the home base…man…Now you’re playing with power.

Nintendo. Reveal the thing. Finally. Please!!!

  11. Google pixel c tablet which uses X1 costs at least 499$ with 32gb memory and more with 64gb. Nintendo said they are not going to sell NX with a loss but maybe nintendo made a really good deal with nvidia. By spring 2017 X1 has been two years on the market and X2 will be brand new. Could Nintendo sell the handheld part for 250-300$ with x2 (+100-150$ for the dock) when pixel c is still that expensive? Seems not possible.

    1. Furthermore, you can all save a ton of money, and get an awesome bundle if you just wait and not buy it day one. Get ZBotw for your WiiU, and be patient. Gotta sent Nintendo a Message.

      1. Not buying it sooner if it’s good, though, could send a false message and hold back development of third party games for it due to low launch numbers.
We shouldn’t just arbitrarily decide not to buy it at launch en masse, because that does more harm than good.

  12. pascal architecture if I am not mistaken is used for the GTX 10XX series. And giving the fact they have better TDP than AMD I am not surprise at all if it comes true. Using Nvidia chip at the moment seems to be a smart move from Nintendo. But from what I read Nvidia make a deal with Nintendo , they could not refuse. I do believe Nvidia selling their chips at lost, in order to win the contract. Saying that we also hear rumour On this site) that AMD designing a chip for Nintendo.

Does it means that Nintendo will have 2 hardware with different chips?
