IGN Posted A List Of Their Top 10 Legend Of Zelda Games

IGN has posted a list of what they feel is the Top 10 Legend of Zelda games. We’ve included the list of games below. The article included remarks on each game listed. Link To The Past was among those titles. IGN said that “since it’s release in the early ‘90s, A Link to the Past remains a masterclass in game design, one that lays the foundation for many games of the series. And it’s still the most replayable one to this day. A Link to the Past’s intro gets right to the point: You awaken on a dark and stormy night, but within minutes you rescue a princess and set off on a grand adventure across two worlds to save Hyrule from Ganon’s minions. Played today, this legendary installment is more than a Super Nintendo nostalgia trip. Its excellent pacing, wonderfully crafted sprite graphics, and fantastic dungeons have kept us playing this classic over and over on repeat. And It is quintessentially the best that the lauded Zelda series has to offer.”

    1. Im more confused over the fact they ranked Link to the past as #1 and not ocarina of time even though both are very overrated tbh
Personally i think Link between worlds was the best one but nobody talk about that one for some reason

        1. They made it significantly easier and added a severely flawed item rental system that merely gave the illusion of freedom. That’s not to say I don’t like the game, — it’s probably like my 8th or 9th favorite Zelda game, and I think every game in my top 10 is legitimately great — but to say they “perfected the formula” is entirely subjective, and likely not true.

          1. That item rental was a nice step but done poorly, the dungeons were 10 minutes a piece, and the game was super easy. I started at Zelda II in my lifetime, first Zelda I beat was Link to the Past. Best one is Twilight Princess with that fucking 50Hrs plus of gameplay.

            1. I agree, there was potential there. I’m also not upset that they did it; it was still an incredibly enjoyable game.

As for playtime, I don’t like to use that as a measure of quality. I thought TP’s pacing was so bad in the first half of the game that I actually stopped playing for a year because I was so bored and it got so tedious to go around everywhere. With that said, I’m glad I picked it back up because the second half of the game is legitimately ****ing fantastic.

On the flip side, something like Panzer Dragoon Saga (yes, I’m a Saturn owner) is incredibly short, — shorter than OoT or MM, even, which is crazy for an RPG — but is an AMAZING experience. I don’t knock it one bit for being around just 20 hours.

        2. ALTTP is way better than ALBW. The only thing better is the wall feature thing. All the levels in ALTTP are harder, and the story was way better, and the music is some of the best GAME music let alone zelda music ever.

      1. Yeah, that’s true too!
Although in my personal opinion the 2D Zeldas aren’t all that fun; but I know they’ve got huge support, so I know what you mean :)

      2. Both deserve 1 and 2 spots and I like where they are at. They definitely aren’t overrated imo. They are the two I have replayed the most by far and still have desires to play again. And link between worlds was good but nowhere near number 1 for sure imo. Haven’t even thought of going back to that one.

    2. I have no problem with that honestly lol I like most of the games listed above it more than it. IMO its the most overrated 3D Zelda by far, and it if didn’t have it’s “dark” art style I don’t think people would praise it half as much.

      1. Hmm, that might be true for some, although my favoirite thing about TP was always that it told a great story that was well connected to the rest of the games (and maybe it “tried to be Ocarina 2” but I’m not sure that is as bad as some make it sound), and I also enjoyed that your companion was a great character which developed and actually was fun to have around.
It has problems too of course, but nothing too bad in my opinion :)

      1. Skyward Sword was a masterpiece? I’m a huge fan of that game & even I have to say calling it a masterpiece is bullshit. I’d give the game an 8 at best.

        1. It’s a 8 at best. IGN sucked it off to push sells for the game. Same thing with MGS 5. Great game, shitty and horrible story since it wasn’t really finished. They also gave it a 10.

  1. I agree with ALttP being the first – that game is brilliant – but I’d personally list things differently. I won’t list all the changes I’d do, but I’d definitely put in (and o boy do I know this will be an unpopular opinion) Skyward Sword in the top 6.

  2. People seriously need to stop grouping the Oracle games together when making these lists. They are completely different games, and I personally think one is clearly better than the other (*cough* Ages *cough*). Such a big pet peeve of mine.

    1. They probably do that cause you can play them both and it’s kind of one big story (I think? Can’t remember if they were connected lol) so maybe they see it as one big game? Not saying they should, just maybe that’s the reason.

      1. Yes. They are connected. And the best part is you don’t have to play them in any specific order. Want Seasons to be part 1 with Ages being part 2? Go ahead. Want the opposite? Have at it!

      2. The plots are similar but the stories are different. Game mechanics, dungeons, items, bosses, they’re all different; they’re very much different games. With that said, they have a linked ending, that’s how they’re connected. The best way to play the games is to link them (in either order), but it doesn’t mean they should be treated like Pokemon Red/Blue. They’re so drastically different from each other, and the general consensus from ANYONE who has played both is that they have a preferred title (mine, again, is Ages).

      1. That doesn’t mean they should be viewed as one. Viewed as one game should be any of the Pokemon generations; OoX games were made different in just about everything, but similar in plot so as to be able to provide the linked ending. Lastly, as I said above, ANYONE who has played both has a preferred title, so why group them together in a list? It’s just a false list then.

And yes, I think Ages is better :).

  3. I just recently played wind waker right after twilight princess and I thought I liked WW more but after playing them back to back I’ll have to say that TP is WAY better in almost every department.

  4. 10. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
    9. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
    8. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
    7. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
    6. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
    5. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
    4. The Legend of Zelda
    3. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX
    2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

    ||Nothing interesting at all with Zelda lists of any kind seeing as it’s always the same 2 weapons at the top…||

  6. I’ve come to the realization IGN are fucking gutter trash when it comes to movie reviews. They gonna trash the hell out of Suicide Squad, but Ghostbusters 2016 gets a pass!? Go to hell, IGN!

      1. Nothing wrong with girl power but when it turns into stuff like with Ghostbusters 2016, men hating, etc, it’s no longer about equality but supremacy.

          1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

            ||The point is regardless of what he believes, that movie was just as bad of an insult to Ghostbusters fans as Fe”#”%”#on F!”%rce is to me…||

              1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

                ||There is no need to see it, the bad SNL jokes and licking the weapon in a sexualized way has no place in Ghostbusters, period…||

                ||It’s as obvious as the FF virus…||

                1. FF? Fantastic Four reboot? Yeah. That movie was total shit, too. (Truthfully, I enjoyed the movie when I watched it on HBO and thought it would have been great if it wasn’t trying to leech off of the Fantastic Four name. But since it did, the movie was total shit regardless of whether I enjoyed it or not.)

                    1. Yeah, I know what you were really talking about. lol Just using you to take a jab at that trash of a F4 movie since it seems to be in the same vein as Ghostbusters 2016: trying to appease the overly PC people.

                      1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

                        ||I haven’t seen that movie and never will, even the cinemasins video made me utterly uninterested in that borefest…||

                        1. I have. I gotta say, it would have been a great movie if it wasn’t trying to do like the Doom movie did & take the name of another franchise along with the name & designs of characters to sell a movie that honestly should have been a brand new, original idea. F4 reboot is actually very much like Metroid Prime: Federation Force in that regard: would make a nice new IP if it wasn’t trying to leech off the success of another well established franchise. :/

                        2. Sadly, it seems the new Star Trek movie is also trying to appease the PC crowd by turning Sulu gay, though they claim it was to honor George Takei which I call bullshit on since even he was against them changing an established character gay & wanted them to create a new character that was gay instead.

                            ||The same garbage as making Thor a woman in the comics, why not create a new character or expand on existing ones?…||

                            1. I don’t think the female Thor thing is the same as this since I’m pretty sure the female Thor is just a female character that already exists in the comics gaining the real Thor’s powers because the real Thor isn’t worthy to wield Mjolnir anymore or some shit. Of course, it’s still bad since instead of an original name, they just name the female Thor Thor! Fucking lazy. :/

                            2. Thor isn’t some damn mantle you can pass off to another all willy-nilly! It’s the name of the Norse God of Thunder, damn it!

                  1. Considering how Peter Feig, a Sony executive, & a few of the female cast are lumping everyone that hates Ghostbusters 2016 into the misogynist/sexist camp, yes. It’s bordering on supremacy, not equality.

“If that’s your reaction, it only speaks about how used you are to see male leads.” I saw Star Wars VII in theaters & loved Rey as the main character. I enjoy every single Resident Evil movie because of Milla Jovovich as Alice. Even watched & own Ultraviolet with Milla as Violet. I enjoyed the movies Salt, both Tomb Raider movies, and Maleficent with Angelina Jolie as the main character. And above all else, I was looking forward to an all female remake of Ghostbusters til that shitty trailer came out showing it was just another slapstick comedy movie. The fact, as I mentioned in the first part, how a few of the people involved with the movie labeled everyone not liking their stupid movie into the same camp, effectively insulting the very audience they should be trying to win over, also ruined this movie’s chances with me. Oh & if that’s not enough, I loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer, both the movie & TV series. I enjoyed Golden Girls. I use to watch Grey’s Anatomy til they killed off Mark Sloan & Lexi Grey. I really want to see Lucy with Scarlett Johansson. Speaking of, I can’t wait for a standalone Black Widow movie with Scarlett as the lead. Two of my favorite movies of all time are Fern Gully & Labyrinth which also have female leads. Can I please stop now or do I need to list other movies & TV shows to prove you wrong? I can throw in some video games with female leads & how I like to use female avatars for games that allow it if movies & TV shows aren’t good enough.

                      ||No one is still better than Ellen Ripley, the predecessor of Samus Aran, the dreaded hunter…||

                      1. It’s not just them, though. A number of critics & other people with no direct ties to Sony that are part of the media have also joined the “the haters are just a bunch of misogynists” bandwagon. Maybe I just used the wrong term in this instance. *shrug*

              ||BvS and SS are overly bashed mainly for idiotic reasons because they cannot resd between the lines…||

              ||They want these colourful hippie movies where everything is happy and occassionally some Superman enemy comes down and wrecks a little mayhem in limited areas like Marvel movies…||

              1. I’m actually loving the gritty direction DC is trying to go with, but is also scared shitless of taking that route all the way since they are hacking these movies up to be more family friendly. It will definitely set them apart from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe if they’d, as I said, quit hacking up the movies to be family friendly. I always noticed how even with the cartoons of Marvel & DC, DC has always been more dark with their stuff than Marvel has. I will admit, though, that I did have my reservations at first because the universe has already existed for years in-universe. But after watching the ultimate edition of BvS & watching Suicide Squad in theaters, I’m extremely excited now.

                  ||I have to say though, the portrayal of the Enchantress in her “human” form was utterly pathetic and childish and was not synchronised with the tone of the movie itself or universe…||

                  1. Human form? Do you mean the regal form she takes after her brother shares his power with her which is the form she has throughout most of the movie?

          2. Well of course A Link to the Past gets the No. 1 spot, because apparently it’s a game you’re not allowed to have a sour opinion on. Everyone treats that game like it’s perfection even though later games surpassed it in every way.

            1. It may not be on the top of my list, but it is still a great game. I’d place it second in all SNES games right behind Super Metroid. Also, you may have any opinion you want, sour or not. But some of us DO love the game.

              ||Nintendo doesn’t care about pitiful left or right human politics, leave that garbage outside or get lost…||

              1. We both sadly know that is not true with how they are censoring their games left & right in the States to appease the far right wing agenda. :/

            2. IGN is nothing but a far left-wing liberal gaming conspiracy site.* Fixed as it’s not cool to condemn all liberals for what their more extremist brethren do.

          3. With a few slight alterations the list is actually very good indeed, which surprises me coming from IGN.

TP is in it’s rightful place, though I’ve yet to play the HD version.
