Here’s What You Need To Know About Super Mario Run For Apple’s iOS

At an Apple event in San Francisco, CA earlier today, Nintendo announced that the leading man of video games will star in Super Mario Run, a full-sized Super Mario Bros. action platformer that has been developed specifically for mobile, and will be available first on the App Store this December. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage at the event and put Mario through his paces in a multi-level demonstration instantly familiar to millions of fans worldwide. In the game, Mario runs forward on his own, but relies on the touch of a single finger to jump over obstacles, avoid pesky enemies and capture the flag pole to complete levels.

We have created Super Mario Run to be perfect for playing on your iPhone,” said Mr. Miyamotowho first devised the Mario character more than 35 years ago. “Super Mario has evolved whenever he has encountered a new platform, and for the first time ever, players will be able to enjoy a full-fledged Super Mario game with just one hand, giving them the freedom to play while riding the subway or my favorite, eating a hamburger.”

“The App Store has made so many things better in our lives — the way we communicate, the way we work and the way we have fun,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “But for gamers of all ages, the story just hasn’t been complete without Mario, so we are thrilled that Nintendo is bringing him to iOS for the first time this December.”

Super Mario Run has a mode in which the player collects coins and heads for the goal, and a mode in which the player competes against the acrobatic moves of other people who have completed the same course. In addition, there is a mode in which you create your own Mushroom Kingdom based upon these play results.

iOS users will be able to download and enjoy a portion of Super Mario Run for free and will be able to enjoy all of the game content available in this release after paying a set purchase price. More details will be disclosed at a later date. The game has been developed with Mr. Miyamoto as lead creator for Nintendo. Nintendo is also continuing its partnership with DeNA for the launch of Super Mario Run. It will be offered on the App Store this December in more than 100 different countries, and nine different languages.

To help iOS users get ready for the launch of Super Mario Run, a free Mario-themed sticker pack for the App Store for iMessage will launch this month. iMessage users can easily access and use these stickers in a variety of ways, bringing a bit of Mushroom Kingdom flavor to their conversations.

Super Mario Run represents the next phase of Nintendo’s expansion to mobile platforms, following the release of Miitomo earlier this year. After the launch of Super Mario Run in December, Nintendo plans to deliver its previously announced mobile device titles in the Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem series before the end of March, 2017.

          1. Mario is just the same crap. There’s nothing new about it. Nintendo relys too much on Mario as if that’s the only franchise they have.

At least there’s variety in Sony games.

  1. This feels so cheap. Sure, I’m going to give it a shot if it ever comes to Android. But this really feels like Nintendo just put Mario in a standard running game, hoping it’ll sell.

    1. Flipside is that I didn’t know the apple event was today, with the PS4 announcement in an hour there won’t be anything else to overshadow an NX reveal. Will be interesting to see if they will wait til after tokyo game show (or if it will be there), will probably be soon.

    2. Dude what are you babbling about? IT’S A FUCKING CASUAL MARIO MOBILE GAME WITH A NINTENDO TWIST!!!…….it’s not suppose to be an full fledge gaming experience. Every mobile game is basically a ” pick up and play ” experience so would Nintendo try to make this a deep playing platformer when they are still making dedicated gaming platforms? Come on man……think for a minute

      1. Exactly!! The Mario Franchise is about to be redefined for millions as a brainless, pick up and play game! That’s sure to make people want to buy Nintendo consoles and games! Or, they will be like, “So this is Mario?”
… Meh. Mario HAS always been pick up and play rehash so Never-mind. This won’t hurt it’s reputation.

  2. Thats what people said about pokemon go. 440 million dollars later, they’re all eating their words. (And yes I know it was made by Niatic+TPC not DeNA+Nintendo, but it was the power of Nintendo’s IP that made it a success.) Miitomo wasnt a real game, so it makes sense that it didnt hold any users for very long. It was a failed half handed approach at social media and Nintendo doesnt do that. But one thing they do well, is make Mario titles. I doubt they would release a shitty Mario game as his first appearance on mobile. They have to be taking this seriously. You shouldnt be so quick to assume it will be bad. Im tired of the hardcore scene talking trash about casual games. Get the fuck over it. Not every game is made with you in mind. Mushroom Kingdom doesn’t revolve around you.

    1. It’s just an endless runner (or auto runner?, temple run, whatever) , pokemon go succeeded because it’s fucking pokemon IRL and relied on that and nostalgia. This will probably make ok money and be “fine” for what it is, which is a shallow phone game. It is retarded to expect everyone to cheer seeing mario on fucking phones. It is insane that so many nintendo fans have ZERO STANDARDS, none, any decision nintendo makes is just the right one that you have to eat up and support.

      1. You know what, if you didnt need to swear every other word I might be able to hear out your argument, but your providing plenty of evidence that your too stupid to have an intelligent debate with, so Im just gonna say this. Go fuck yourself, you fucking fuck fuck. Also, using the word Retarded, is what you would call “retarded”. Go back to the 90s you piece of shit.

        1. I swore twice you massive faggot (Oh NO I did it again, it’s like I don’t even know the current year!!!!!). Yeah you clearly weren’t able to decipher what I was getting at, it’s like when people point out typos to ignore the argument.

          1. Fuck+retarded+fucking = 3 times >2 times

Aparently you cant speak without swearing, AND you dont know how to count, so now Im positive you cant make a rational argument. Have a nice life Raymond. Thats your name right? Raymond?

      2. Also Raymond, its not an endless runner you dumbfuck. If you had been listening, you would have heard him say there are 3 modes, one of them is a full fledged 2d mario world, in the art style of NSMB. There is an endless runner mode, but its not the main focus of the game, so clearly you dont know wtf your talking about.

          1. I’m the editor in chief of gameinfarce, BITCH. Best remember. Gettin money over here, Representin and etc. You need to chill out with the language dawg. You are asking for a fight when you unnecessarily swear, callin people “pussy ass faggot bitch nughas be retarded”. Like, literally your typing extra letters for no reason other than to turn people away from any reason you might have behind that garbledy gook. Just say what your trying to say like an adult, no need to yell at your computer.

      3. It is not an endless runner. This has an end. People complain about stuff they don’t know what they complaining about.

    2. This game will be a license to print money…. The only difference with Pokemon GO being whether there are things to buy, which if not, and let’s say the game costs a few bucks… I mean, I’m paying for a mario game on my phone, no doubt.

It is interesting however when we think about a new handheld (at least in part) console and the dip into mobile games. I am really excited to see where we are at in a year with this

      1. dude seriously your way too smart to be part of this community lol the mynintendonews community is super toxic, like whenever you comment its always super smart and well thought out unlike all the other idiots on this page and the dumbass role-play people. ive been thinking of ditching this site for a while now and i gotta recommend nintendolife its waaay better in terms of a friendly and intelligent community. i dont comment much mostly just lurk and its the level of toxicity that keeps me from chiming in here. i dont know how you can put up with these people hahaha

        1. NintendoLife is way, way too moderated for my taste. If you want to talk Nintendo, and not have a reasonable debate because everyone believes Nintendo do is perfect, then yes, Nintendo life.
This is the only place you get a variety of news and colorful conversations. Yes it can be rough sometimes, but I spent 2 months at Nintendo life a year ago and nearly died of boredom.

Look, you still come here. If you hated it that much, we’d never see you again. You’ll be back, and I truly am glad you come back from time to time!

        2. I’ve heard Nintendo Life is full of fanboys that think 99% of everything Nintendo does is perfect & that can’t do no wrong and if you so much as have a negative opinion about Nintendo, a good majority cry that you aren’t giving Nintendo a blow job like the rest of the sheep. If true, n8lewinski can do better than that, too. But maybe he doesn’t want to do “better.” Maybe he likes it here & likes seeing some of the battles that take place here. I know I do! Besides, least here there tends to be a good balance of people both criticizing and/or defending Nintendo. It gets tense around it here at times but that’s the beauty of this place. If you want to see nothing but positive comments toward Nintendo, this site definitely is not for you. So you are definitely better off at Nintendo Life with the rest of the mindless sheep. If what I hear is true, anyway.

        3. Not calling you one of those mindless sheep, by the way. BUT if you get pissed about me talking trash about Nintendo Life even though I’m just mentioning what I’ve heard about that place and get pissed I’m criticizing Nintendo, then if the shoe fits… *shrug*

        4. If THIS community is considered the toxic one that is sad, “Man they are insane over at mynintendonews, I hear only 97% of the people defend everything nintendo does instead of 100%!!!! This one dude even used the word retarded, in 2016!!!!!!”

          1. “Yes! How dare anyone talk bad about Nintendo!? They are perfection incarnate & can never do any wrong! They are GOD!! Let us all pray to Nintendo! Praise be to you, Nintendo! Our Lord & Savior!”

        5. I feel the same way. I’m to the point that people don’t like video games. There is a love of talking bad about something but the never speak of what they actual enjoy. I think I’m going to go back to lurking. Let people be miserable about gaming.

        6. All right man, well thanks and I will check out the other site too… This is where I get my Nintendo on because I don’t have people in real life to geek out about it with. I will say though, there are some diamonds in the rough, and the negativity (as ignorant as it is often) can be enlightening and even the super fandom and Nintendo Commanders or whatever they call themselves are silly but the hype is cool too. Only thing I wish is that I could make posts or propose ideas, but I get my opinions in just the same.Trolls are trolls though and that usually sucks

          1. not one to reply to myself, but “diamonds in the rough” is wrong… most of the regular commentors on here are names I recognize now and I would say most of the regulars, especially after a change in moderation last year, have very valid points to be made both negative and positive and I learn things all the time, especially about the people’s tastes and what they are looking for in games and consoles. I think there are a lot of bullshit visitors as well, but they aren’t always here and slip in mostly on the most popular threads (anything NX at the moment) and even then, the regular visitors can have their own convos going without the need to pander to the gallery of ignorance.

        7. This place is pretty chill most of the time. Not as many users compared to Nintendo Life, so you usually see a lot of the same people regularly. And as someone else said, NL is heavily moderated; you need to tone it down if you consider using them. A lot more people comment there compared to MNN. The comments here die down really quickly. Unless you reply to one of the regulars that usually keep discussion going. As for fanboys, it used to be absolutely awful. Last time I was there though, it has been much better. I rarely see fanboys, so it seems a lot of people are coming to their senses. This site used to have much more people, but it’s declined ever since actually creating an account was required. Annoying spam and trolls have mostly been driven away. Like I said, this place is pretty relaxed most of the time. However, on this article, it’s just terrible.

      1. Yes profitable… but the video looks pretty good, albeit not showing much, and to have basically a simpler version New Super Mario Bros on my phone is pretty rad. My dumps at work will never be the same!!!

      ||The Sonyans will resort to Ridge Racer, push it to its limits and lose millions of euros in the process as that is the religion of the Sonyan Leader Hirai…||

  3. I’m not trying to defend this game, but people really need to calm down, seriously. We haven’t even seen gameplay yet, which could mean that it could be exactly what everyone fears, or maybe it’ll be okay. I’ll be real, it’s probably going to be the same as any other level-based runner out there, but if that’s the case, it won’t hurt Nintendo’s reputation at least (unless you want it to, since this game is mostly developed by DeNA if I remember correctly).

At least this game sounds like it isn’t the usual “endless runner”, which have no actual thought put into level design because it’s typically random patterns. It sounds more like the mobile Rayman Run mobile games, which are okay (I would much rather play the real Rayman games, but they’re higher quality than most mobile runner games).

And yes, I am trying to be optimistic.

  4. Not bothered one bit. It’s a casual game with casual effort for casual gamers. If it makes a ton of money that only means good things for Nintendo. We’ll still get better Mario games for consoles. If I were Nintendo I would focus hardware on the more hardcore fans and use smartphone games to please the casuals.

      1. Good for him that he likes to play on actual consoles and isn’t as fickle as all the people who bought the Wii and then jumped ship. My point was for Nintendo instead of making stuff to try and please casuals like Triforce Heroes or Federation Force just make better games for consoles and put shit like that on phones where it won’t take up too much development resources.

Metroid could actually work as a rail shooter on iOS and could still be a better game than Other M or FF.

        1. No Nintendo need to just make games. People like to categorize everything. Make one group superior to others. Nintendo needs to stay the company they started out to be a company that makes video games for everyone. If that’s Breath of the Wild, Federation Force, or Nintendogs it doesn’t matter as long as the have some games that anyone can play. A person that enjoys gaming a little at a time should not be treated any different than the follow the series and buy the merchandise gamer. Everybody has wants and it is up to Nintendo to do the best they can to fulfill it.

            1. Everyone creates sucess. There is no successful product without people that may like it but they not really into it buying the product. Your data banks should have that information. Time for a tune up.

                ||It only adds to the income but in the end, they will fade, loyalists will always be there and so they must always be prioritized…||

          1. Considering the fact that both Triforce Heroes and Federation Force were flops I think it shows that not even casuals wanted them. They’re crap. I’m not saying Nintendo should ditch things like Mario Kart or Mario Party. They just need to stop trying to change things that don’t need to be changed to try and attract casuals. Key examples being Metroid, Paper Mario, Zelda (thank god for Link Between Worlds and Breath of the Wild), etc.

Btw, playing a little at a time is exactly how phone games work.

            1. They created them they can change them. It is up to the consumer if they want to buy it or not. You say those games are flops but you don’t know what Nintendo’s expectation were for those games. By your logic, the Metroid Prime games shouldn’t have been made. They changed Metroid. Btw, playing a little at a time is exactly how console games work.

              1. Metroid was changed for the better with the Prime Trilogy. Federation Force is complete crap. Enjoy waving that flag for mediocrity. The consumers have spoken that they don’t want it.

                1. That’s your opinion. You still want Nintendo to cater to only you. People did buy the game so they did want to play it. Nintendo is not about just you.

                    1. No matter what you say. Nintendo will always cater to everyone as they always have. So keep complaining but it is going on deaf ears.

                      1. They can cater to everyone but they don’t have to change the fundamentals of their games and alienating existing fans of those series in the process. Either way I’m done with this conversation. They can obviously do no wrong in your eyes so why bother.

                        1. They do a lot wrong. No company is perfect. They made the Prime series which is wrong in my eyes. They make animal crossing which is wrong in my eyes but those games are not for me. Why am I going to harp on something someone want to create. It is their choice to make the games but my choice not to buy them. You keep mentioning federation force as if that is the only game they have done that. As good as Nintendo is they will never make a game series that a person love all the way through. Too many opinions about what the game is.

                      2. Metroid Prime is actually the highest selling game in the series so I think I’m right in why I’m saying here.

Oh who am I kidding, I know I’m right.

                          1. Serving the lowest common denominator is something an amateur business does. In fact, any idiot that runs a business where the lowest common denominator is their main target doesn’t last very long as that only chases off the majority that want better. Watch some Bar Rescue to see for yourself.

                          2. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

                            ||This isn’t about catering solely to loyalists, this is about staying true to the essence of a franchise, you can’t just make something and then call it Metroid or anything else when it has absolutely nothing incommon with real Metroid games…||

                            ||2D Metroids and the Prime Trilogy had different gameplay and approach but they all had the same essence Metroid is known for, the FF virus has nothing close to it at all and ever will…||

                            1. When you create something, you can change it however you like to change it. Fans don’t own the game but the creators do. You have an idea of what Metroid is but the creators do too.

                          1. Both styles are good. Prime nailed the atmosphere of what Metroid should be perfectly in the change to 3D like what Ocarina of Time did for Zelda.

                  1. I certainly DO categorize gamers. But it’s not black and white. Sometimes I’m a dedicated “hardcore” gamer that wants more depth than a pickup and play game, sometimes I play some casual gaming before bed, but there is a difference. Casual games tend to be more shallow. Take the latest Black Ops. Those just going online to shoot people, that’s casual gaming in my opinion. People that play the Story, more hardcore, or Invested.

Nintendo does not “Just need to make games” sir. They need to consider that some of us still like deeper, story and exploration games, and not just turn all their franchises into casual, pick up and play games. Those have their time and place, but turning your back on the people who stood with you for decades, selling them out for casual $$$? Well that shit won’t last. They will become like every other corporation bent on greed. At which point, they will lose their Nintendo magic.

They need to be different, like they have always been. Give us Prime fanatics a fucking Metroid game, and sell off your tired IP’s to the mobile wheel-house… That’s fine. But when it is obvious they care only for money, which is the direction they are going, there will be no loyal fans to buy whatever they make,… Maybe that will be good for them. It may take 5, 10, 20 years, but Nintendo will fall in my lifetime if they become like Activision, Sega or any of the others. I hope that doesn’t happen so they are around when I have kids someday.

                    1. I liked the beginning of this. You still going by your taste as if your taste is the only one that matters. I don’t want a metroid prime. I want a 2D/3D Metroid game but not Prime. If they make Prime instead well that’s fine something for those players to play. I may not get the Metroid game I want but that’s why there are other games that I can buy and play. Every game Nintendo makes doesn’t have to be to my tastes that is why I said they need to make games for everyone not one person.

            2. Word Mike. I think that sounds like a great strategy. Sadly, it looks like it’s all going to casuals. :/ But what you said, that would be smart.

          2. I don’t know what you guys are complaining about, but I actually really like what I’m seeing here. It looks creative and fun, and its not just like the console games, it has tons of brand new elements that look creative and fun. Also this is not an endless runner, it has levels. In my opinion that is a very good thing since endless runners can get stale quick. This game looks fun and creative, and it looks like it will have a decent amount of content, especially since Nintendo can add new levels through updates. I think its gonna be great. (Reading back through my comment I desperately need a thesaurus, cause i said creative and fun way too many times. Lol.)

            1. Exactly homey. People need to chill and relax. Super Mario Run is made with the intentions of enticing the casuals who only play on smartphones and tablets to jump aboard the NX when a full fledge Mario title comes to the platform. It isn’t suppose to be a real deep platforming experience like your standard Mario game. Like you said…..it’s not even an endless runner…..it has actually has levels and power ups to collect. Running is the main purpose but it’s not only purpose. It’s meant to be a super fun casual mobile game to build more anticipation for a real Mario experience on the NX. This is Nintendo’s strategy going forward with their mobile games and it’s an ingenious one

          3. Seems like this does exactly what they have wanted to do on mobile give everyone with a smartphone a small taste of the Mario universe. If you want a full Hybrid experience you can then buy the all new Hybrid Mario game for NX. sounds good and dandy for me….mark my words……smh

            1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

              ||I would get him banned again, now that I think of it, I should banish a few more soon…||

          4. Everyone else is arguing with each other i thought before i can to this comment section people were gonna be happy millions asked for Mario on iphone and now people are complaining sheesh this is going to make Nintendo stock skyrocket so don’t worry be happy :)

            1. I can’t speak for everyone, but my personal concern is not how fun or successful it will be, I’m worried it will take the spotlight off the lesson they are learning with fed Force, and will be like the Wii – success that pushes them further and further away from ever making a game deeper than a shallow puddle. If I was sure that wasn’t going to happen, then I wouldn’t care at all about this, but since the Wii, I’ve seen nothing except my favorite IP’s getting gutted, one by one, leaving shadows of what they were.

              1. There have been some very bright spots this gen that give me whatever small shred of hope that I have. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 7&8, A Link Between Worlds, Luigi’s Mansion 2, and the incredible looking Breath of the Wild. 3D Land was a good game for the 3DS and 3D World was fun too but after Galaxy 1&2 it felt like a step down for home console 3D Mario games. I really missed the more varied bosses.

I’m sure there’s other games I missed but I’m only counting the ones I bought. I had Smash for Wii U but ended up trading it in because it’s not that fun by myself even with online. Idk. I feel like MK is better if you mostly play solo and have no one local to play with.
