Splatoon Wins Game Of The Year Award At Tokyo Game Show

Splatoon may have been out for quite some time but it would seem as though Japanese gamers just can’t get enough of the title. The ultra-colourful multiplayer shooter scooped the acclaimed Game of the Year award at this week’s Tokyo Game Show. Not bad for a title that was actually released in 2015.

    1. This is so dumb. I don’t care if a game is unilaterally considered the greatest game of all time. It shouldn’t win awards for the next year. Game of the Year. Not last year. But whatever. Life goes on.

      1. Isn’t this how it works though? Award shows are always about the previous full year. 2016 isn’t over yet and there’s still games coming out.

        1. Funny how many people miss that though lol. Some award shows even just count the “year” period as the time between the current show and the show next year. Either way congrats to Nintendo, the dev team and Splatoon.

    2. All TGS awards always go to games from the previous year, which is the best way to handle awards, imo. 2016 is not over yet, and there’s still a couple huge games coming out in the next months, some of which very well do have GOTY-potential. I’ve always thought it’s kinda silly to award the GOTY title (or, anything-of-the-year, for that matter) before the year even ends.
So yea, Splatoon winning is not really that extraordinary in that respect, so there’s nothing such as “not bad for a title that was actually released in 2015”, as mentioned in the article, because every game that has won a TGS award is from 2015.

      1. *all TGS GOTY awards

And I messed up the last part too, meant to say every game that has won a TGS GOTY award is from the previous year, not 2015, of course, ahah.
Had a long day, please forgive. :p

  1. I gotta.give it to Nintendo. The Wii U may have been their most “underwhelming” console ever. But SPLATOON has been it’s hands down their best new IP since The Gamecubes PIKMIN.

  2. I’m glad. Splatoon is the Mario Kart of shooters. It – And Nintendo – deserves to be recognized for what it is: the best IP this generation and a colorful take of gritty and realistic shooters.

    1. Smart move. I heard Nintendo is gonna re-release all the top selling games from the Wii U to the NX.
      *Mario Kart 8
      *Super Smash Bros.
      *Splatoon
Are currently the 3 most wanted titles for the upcoming NX.

    2. The inevitable sequel wont be happening for a long time. They are almost surely going to port Splatoon to the NX before they release a sequel. Remember, like you, very little people who dont own a Wii U have even played this game, they have no idea how fun/addicting it is. Nintendo wants to maximize exposure, they will take no risk by porting it, existing players who buy the NX will want the definitive version, and if the NX install base is bigger than the wii u’s (which obviously it will be) then that means on top of the people who already own it for wii u and upgraded, they can also market it as a launch title to those who havent played it yet, again, like you. So I wouldnt wait around for the sequel. Its gonna be a few years still.

      1. Maybe it could be backwards compatible with Wii U digitally. Would taking the games on the go with NX be any different than if the game already used Off-TV play?

        1. Nintendo already told us they wouldnt be doing backwards compatibility with wii u, so when you say “digitally” you mean the virtual console, which we have no idea if Nintendo will keep doing. And if they are available on the eshop, you can be sure they are going to get a physical version too, and if they’re getting a physical version its not a “digitally backwards compatible” game, its just a port. They are going to make physical carts of Mariokart 8, Splatoon, and Smash4, without question.

          1. By digitally I mean buying the same digital versions of the games that you can find right now on the Wii U eShop. Some games won’t be compatible with on the go gaming and others would. Namely, the games that already have Off-TV Play. The only game that I could see getting a full release is a version of Smash Bros. that has all the content of the Wii U and 3DS plus the DLC. Maybe Mario Kart 8 with all of its DLC too. Plus I think there should be a way to transfer data from Wii U to NX.

I wonder if 3DS would be possible. Probably not.

        2. Also, Splatoon doesnt support off tv play, you need both screens to see the map and quick jump to your teammates during battle, and those are two functions I doubt they would scrap just to let you play it on the go. Maybe they find a work around like toggling between the two screens, but at this point you need to screens to play splatoon, and thats the way it should be!

          1. Which is why Splatoon wouldn’t be compatible with gaming on the go. Donkey Kong, Mario, Mario Kart, etc. are the games I was referring to. Those that already have Off-TV Play.

  3. Which games were nominees?. Honestly, this is silly, Splatoon is not from 2016, and well, if it can count 2015, than its not the best game on the wii u either. Xenoblade Chronicles X takes the crown hands down. Common, Splatoon? just cause its a Nintendo main studio new IP, the game is good but lackluster, campain is boring in some points, music is repetitive, few battle modes online, weak multiplayer offline, and was a game that needed several DLC so feel complete. Xenoblade X on the other hand will, at maximum, have Zelda BOTW as a match on the Wii U. X is a strong step into a great pillar of JRPGS, a major of what the Wii U can do, an example of how to create a live open world, and ajoy for dedicated players, Splatoon is just a solid game that points potential if worked well in the future

      1. Make sense, yeah. It more fair with all the games, released in one year. This justify just one bit though. Splatoon cannot beat a game like xenoblade x, they are simply not in the same patamar. With less expertize, Monolith soft created a monster that may very well be the prologue of one of the biggest things that ever hitted a Nintendo console. Splatoon is just, one more great new IP.

    2. and the campaign was solid and really used the colour mechanic, the boss fights were great, few game modes, yes but necessary modes and the level design are fantastic..as much as i wanted a local MP,this is very online MP centric,if you think its a bad idea then overwatch and battlefield are also guilty of such.DLC?free content is better than what other AAA industry does, and they did say it will be given gradually to the public so i see no problem there.

      1. the idea with forcing the player to find the kattles to enter in the stages, in a empty map, with really nothing to do, did not work as well as they wanted, there should be more pluzzles and things to find on that part. Its centered on online and yet just have basically one mode to play it with minimal variation, and just leave two stages available per day to play online, and lacks chat even with friends. It is as I said, good game, but lackluster a bit too much,

      ||You’re missing out one of the best Wii U weapons, the insignificant “censorship” some of you dread has absolutely nothing to do with how much there is to do, there are still “half-naked” clothing to buy whenever…||

      1. XCX’s censorship could have been avoided by changing the character’s age if her character isn’t dependent on her being 13 or younger since there are a number of Japanese girls over 18 with that kind of body type. It’s not unusual for them at all to be 18 or older with a body like that. Now if her character was dependent on her being 13 or whatever, then I can understand the censorship of her outfit since I don’t think a 13 yr old is old enough to wear such an outfit. So if that’s the case, I’m not against that censorship as it made sense to me.

But that’s not why I’m missing out on one of the best Wii U games. I’m missing out on one of the best Wii U games because of the Wii U itself. All I feel for Wii U is utter hate. Shitty system transfer, console locked save data, digital purchases, & user accounts, forced use of the Gamepad for settings, forced use of two Gamepads for system transfer which shouldn’t have been complicated by having to use two Gamepads at the same time or have the feature locked behind needing a Gamepad, etc etc.
