Geoff Keighley Explained AM2R & Pokemon Uranium Being Removed From The Game Awards

A Game Awards Twitch stream was held this week by Geoff Keighley, where he went into more detail about why AM2R and Pokemon Uranium were removed as nominees from The Game Awards. He said that “I think the big challenge that we face as a show is that everything in the show has to be legally cleared by the game companies in question. So one of the things that we go through is this clearance process where we have to get basically rights from everyone that owns the IPs of the games, but we don’t tell those companies in advance who’s nominated, and we find out together. It became clear once we announced the nominees that we weren’t going to be able to get clearance on those games from Nintendo, understandably so, it’s Nintendo IP, they’re trying to protect their IP, and those creators had sort of taken those games down. So from a show perspective, those games had been I think issued take downs, and if we include those in the show, then the show is potentially at risk for take down as well. I think the fan creations are amazing things that fans do, and I hope that game companies and fans find ways to continue to create that content, and I would like nothing more than those creators and Nintendo to figure out a way to collaborate on content, but from a show perspective, it’s a bummer because I think those things are amazing efforts from fans, they created it, but at the end of the day, they are illegal use of IP and different game companies have different approaches to that… I think fan creations for me, we have to make sure those creations are legal creations or at least creations that are not subject to take down to be in the show. It was a bummer to see that happen, but it was something that unfortunately from a show perspective we had to remove them because we couldn’t obtain the clearance.”

  1. Who’s going to protect nintendo’s IPs when someone comes along and makes their own original titles that superior on steam?
We’ve already got freedom planet vs sonic, stardew valley vs harvest moon, and undertale vs earthbound.

      1. Well, I don’t think it’s a far comparison just in the fact that Undertale isn’t that much like EarthBound, really. Now, I love Undertale, and I know it was influence by EarthBound, but it’s only similar in humor. They both play different and have a different feel overall.

    1. A game is not in danger because of another game of the same genre! A game is only in danger if someone steals the name and characters and makes his own version of it without a licence.

    2. I’ll give you modern sonic and HM aren’t very good, but they still clobber freedom planet and stardew valley when they were in their prime. And as for undertale vs earthbound, that’s just low quality bait.

  2. “and I would like nothing more than those creators and Nintendo to figure out a way to collaborate on content”

The only way to communicate with nintendo right now is to mass not buy something

  3. I understand the reason for removing Pokémon Uranium because Sun and Moon were just released and it coud confuse people, but I don’t give a flying fuck if including AM2R angers Nintendo. Besides, there shouldn’t be any confusion with AM2R because there won’t be a Nintendo developed Metroid game at the Game Awards!

Anyways Nintendo hasn’t released a 2D Metroid since 2004 (2002 if you count new entries), the last two ‘official’ games were insults to the franchise, and they didn’t do shit for Metroid’s 30th anniversary (or 25th btw). But now they suddenly care about the series as soon as someone releases a game better than any Metroid game they’ve released in almost 15 years? FUCK THEM!

The developer wasn’t making a cent off the game and it’s free fucking advertising to a new generation of gamers. Take a page from Valve (Black Mesa, Garry’s Mod, ect) Nintendo and support the fans that love your games so much that they will work for free.

AM2R deserves Best Fan Game, Best Indie Game, Game of the Year, and as much praise and recognition possible. Fuck Keighley for playing politics and effectively silencing this game from a bunch of potential Metroid fans.

    Fuck, I need a drink

    1. If you think Uranium might have confused people when it was clearly labeled as a fan game only playable on the PC vs Sun and Moon which were heavily advertised and on Nintendo’s proprietary platform…

I’m sorry, that just reeks of BS excuses. No one would have been confused. They just didn’t want it up if they weren’t profiting from it.

  4. I like how that’s the one thing you got out of my entire statement. I wasn’t explicitly defending the removal of Uranium, I just understand that decision a little bit more. Sure the average Nintendo fan could tell the difference between them, but a lot of other people who don’t follow Pokémon/Nintendo might mix up things- like screen shots and/or the names of the games on a list. AM2R is vastly different than Fed Force in terms of name, look, and quality.

I also didn’t mean to say the game was bad either if that’s what you thought…

  5. “The ammount of retddation is here is tooo damn hi!”
In this age stealing is considered having talent? Go out and play in the highway.

    1. So are you saying a brand new employee at Nintendo, who has never worked on Metroid before, but loves the series, has no talent and isn’t fit to work on the game because he/she isn’t an original Metroid creator?
It’s the exact same situation with AM2R. The developers may not have created Metroid, but they sure know how to make a good game, and know how to handle the franchise. Just because they aren’t under Nintendo’s payroll doesn’t mean they are talentless or stealing.

        1. Yet the idiot went ahead and called it a Metroid game. The only reason its called AM2R now is because Nintendo made him take it down. This guy is talented like crazy but for some stupid ass reason he didnt make it his own game.

  6. Aka I didn’t want Nintendo to pull their funding from my show. I can’t risk losing their money to line me own pockets.

And fans making fan made games communicating with Nintendo & working something out with Nintendo!?

If that Youtube thing is anything to go by, Nintendo doesn’t play well with others if they are just small fry that they can easily push around with their well paid lawyers.
