People Are Complaining About Super Mario Run Eating Too Much Data

Super Mario Run has proved to be a success for Nintendo as people rushed to download the game once it was released on Thursday. However, complaints are now flooding in from users that the game is eating up too much data on their iPhones. Some users are reporting that the game chews through 40-60MB per hour of gameplay, this is fine if you are on wi-fi, but if you’re using a data plan this can really hurt. Even the tutorial can eat large chunks of data. Nintendo says that the game is always online to help prevent piracy.

  1. After playing the free levels I can see how this is the case.

The game took ages to download, then after the first level, it starts downloading the next! Absurd. On top of that, they want you to pay £8 for this?

I’d pay if It had x2 the amount of content and if it was fully playable offline. TBH even then I think £8 for a mobile game is a lot.

    1. You said: [“it’s Nintendo, of course people will complain.”]

That excuse is old and stale. A single player runner game doesn’t need an always online connection nor does it need to use that much data PER HOUR. Nintendo is so fucking out of touch.

  2. People are just spoilt with their mobile games. Everyone expects a full game given to them for free purely because it’s on their phone and complain over any little thing. So what, it uses data, no more than what going on something like Instagram or Snapchat would in the same period of time.

Nope. People expect a SINGLE PLAYER RUNNER game to function without an internet connection.

Comparing a SINGLE PLAYER game to a SOCIAL NETWORKING app? Have you lost your marbles?

    2. Not really dude. Im an avid user of snapchat and when I say avid, i really mean i open it up at least 30 times a day. Im doing 400mb a months on it. SMR is eating up over a Gig in less than a month at 40mb a day. That is way too much for a game, specially for one that is single player.

    1. Yea, totally. I think it’s funny about all the articles posting everywhere about Nintendos stock dropping. These investors are so dumb. They go batshit crazy when Pokemon go releases, a game Nintendo gets just a small slice of. And then they jump ship on a game that Nintendo gets nearly all the profit from. When will media sites stop making a big deal about Nintendo shares going up and down. Investors have no clue about gaming which makes the fluctuation completely benign.

  3. Shouldn’t these people be complaining about the fact they even have a data limit instead of bitching at Nintendo?? I’ve never understood “data limits”.

    1. Data limits are artificial limits made by communication companies to make more money. That’s all. They can get away with it because most consumers are stupid beyond belief. There is an unlimited amount of data.

  4. Mine says it’s used 64 bytes so far, haha. I think I’ve mostly played on WiFi though. Judging from some of the comments people aren’t realizing the difference between data used while playing and download data. The downloads of course take a lot of data, you should always update your games on WiFi, it even suggest it. The actual gameplay data usage does still seem a bit high. 40-60mb for very little data transfer? Sounds strange. The only data that’s really transferred is player data for levels and any gifts/My Nintendo points earned. This whole “always online” crap doesn’t work well for mobile games, especially with some of the biggest cell phone providers still not offering unlimited data plans.

      1. Does it make me a bad person because I want nintendo to fail in the mobile department so it can focus on their dedicated platform?

Dont get me wrong. I still belive that if they’re successful on the mobile market theyll take that profit and bring us bigger, better, and more games to our home consoles, but this is taking away (even if its little) resources from theyre dedicated handhelds.

        1. No I agree, I want them off mobile too. I think they’re only on mobile to promote their brand before the Switch launch anyways. The timing is not a coincidence.

I don’t really want them to fail, which would be almost impossible anyways. But I do want them to focus everything into their main platform.

  5. So people complain about it eating data but they don’t complain about paying $120 for their data plan that doesn’t include any other lines and they don’t complain about paying $2000 for a “premium” phone with specs from 2 gens ago. I own an android and my data plan is decent, I got my phone free from MetroPCS from that offer they did (get 2 phones free by switching to MetroPCS) so when it does come to android I get to complain.
