Laura Dale Serves Up Some More Nintendo Switch Rumours

We haven’t got too long to go now until the Nintendo Switch unveiling which takes place on January 12th, but that hasn’t stopped people crying out for more information. Thankfully, journalist Laura Kate Dale has provided some more juicy rumours to YouTube user OBE1plays about Nintendo’s upcoming video game system. You can read these, below:

  • There’s a record button on the left Joy-Con.
  • There will be no friend codes, DeNA is helping Nintendo with the networking.
  • The leak from Reddit user ‘Genos’ is fake.
  • Laura was asked if there was the possibility of Red Dead Redemption 2 or Overwatch coming to the Switch. Regarding Red Dead, she stated that there’s almost no way it’s going to happen due to Rockstar’s relationship with Nintendo. She assures that Overwatch wouldn’t be there at launch, and the two stated that it would require a massively overhauled port due to the ‘always-online’ nature of the title.
  • Don’t expect a delay for the Nintendo Switch.
  • Laura was asked about voice-chat, before she was going to answer she asked if she could say anything due to OBE1 releasing a video detailing it out soon. This basically confirmed the fact that it’s going to be included, smooth move guys.
  • The system will have Bluetooth, not sure to what extent.
  • The Joy-Cons will be available to be purchased separately at launch date. Docks will be purchasable after 6 months and will be ‘cheap’.
  • There won’t be a bundle that includes the Pro Controller, they will be purchaseable seperately.
  • The battery will last around 3 hours with everything at maximum.
  • The charging port is USB and will easily and quickly charge the system.
  • Only expect three virtual console Gamecube games at launch, they will be optimized for their original resolutions.
  • At launch there will only be one color of the Switch, and it will be the default grey. However, there’s a slight chance that there will be multiple colors after launch.
  • The right Joy-Con has an IR pointer akin to the Wiimote, this will allow touch-screen functionalities while docked.
  • The entry bundle for the switch will have 32GB of onboard storage, Micro SD card support will extend to 128 GB.
  • When asked about Mass Effect Andromeda, she brought up the point that Mass Effect 3 sold horrendously on Wii U and that there are no plans to release the title.

    1. Its to do with the development of body harvest for the n64. With the devs who worked on it too demanding for the scottish devs. Plus tons of issues which ended up with nintendo removing the funding and basically having to get a few publishers to release the game. But i hope the it can be repaired someday its never too late

  1. Let’s just hope that nintendo releases loads more game cube virtual console titles in the future. Damn it I NEED my Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Paper Mario:TTYD on the go!!!

  3. So nintendo says the switch is a home console first and foremost and portability coming second. So why would you not make the pro controller the standard controller? If portability does come second then the joy con should be the controller sold separately but nah, lets force people that dont want it to pay for it. I mean, we already have to pay for the screen which I wont use but you dont give a f!@k hey nintendo? They are so full of shit and I can see right through their bs.

    1. You realize the screen IS the console, right? And why wouldn’t they make the joy cons the standard controllers, that’s the whole gimmick of the console.

      1. This is not a console first then. If it was the pro controller would be standard. Nintendo are lying to the consumer. They just dont want to admit they’ve left the console business.

            1. It’s the same buttons. I’m sorry it doesn’t have what you want. Hopefully one day you get a product you happy with. Your feelings is your feelings. I’m happy with the decision. I can use any controller so it never applies to me. Good luck with finding that product that has what you want.

            2. I don’t think you have a much of an argument. Over the years, consoles have come out with controllers of all shapes and sizes. Nobody looked at the GameCube controller and said it wasn’t a console controller just because it looks unconventional. In this case, you’ll have a controller that you can hold in you hands away from the system that controls a console. You can say it’s not a good controller but you can’t say it isn’t a console controller or that it’s a mobile controller. That doesn’t make any sense.

        1. stop thinking out of your ass. Just because it’s not the dream bundle you wanted, doesn’t mean that they’re lying. You get the fucking joycon controller. Thats not something a handheld would give, bro. Now relax and buy the controller seperately. You do realize that if they didn’t make it like this, everyone would HAVE to pay 60£ extra for the console, right? what the heck would the point of that be? Just buy it seperately…. I hate the people who can’t use their brain and type shit like this. Poor confused 10 year olds who believe your retarded bullshit

      2. He’s got a point. Nintendo makes it sound like it’s a home console with portability as its gimmick. They should also release a budget version without the screen and with the pro controller for the people who never use it on the go (it’s big after all).

          1. You’re a fucking idiot! The screen IS NOT the console! The screen is just a screen. The console is the circuit board with all the chips on it. They could make a home version of the Switch without the screen anytime!

            1. You are the fucking idiot here.
If they did that, they’d have to change the name, which would confuse the marketing for both, cannibalize sales, and end up just like the Wii U did.
With no screen, it’s not a Switch, so no, they could NOT just take off the screen at any time.

    2. are you on meds….you want a switch with no attatched controls no control choice and no control cutting edge capabillity.

you want switch to be a box with a borring limited controller BUY A PS4 YOU BUFFOON

      1. Believe it or not, there’s nothing cutting edge about the Joy-cons, and yes, there are many people who don’t do handheld gaming at all so the portability of the device offers them no real benefit at all. Whether they choose to use the adapter to make the Joy-cons one controller or if they use the Pro Controller, their experience with the system will be 100% the same as playing a weaker Xbox One or PS4. Those who have no interest in playing it as a console, will have an experience almost 100% the same as playing an over-sized, more-powerful Vita.

The unique thing about the console is not what it offers in each of its configurations, because its less of a unique console experience than the Wii U and less of a unique portable experience than the 3DS, but the fact that you can use it in either of those configurations. The problem is, that particular ability will only appeal to the subset of people who own both a console and handheld. It actually may only appeal to a subset of them, too, as it does neither of those jobs as well as alternative devices.

I’ll be buying the Switch because I want to play it’s games, but there’s nothing about the device itself that is interesting to me at all. I’d still prefer to see a more refined Wii U or 3DS.

        1. Your looking at it from a hardware perspective only. In some regards your right, but honestly I’m not buying the system because of the hardware. Look at it this way, finally we will be able to play a Pokémon game in HD on T.V.. And not just Pokémon either, because I can almost guarantee you MH5 will be on the Switch. So a bad ass HD MH5 on a 60″ TV? Dude I would buy the Switch for that ALONE. Not to mention countless other games. And BotW on a portable? The next 3D Mario game? It’s a really exciting time to be a Nintendo fan if you can look past specs and power. Honestly I think most developers are unable to financially keep up with the increasing console specs anyways. Thats why we have lost 80% of video game developers since 2008.

          1. You could have a Pokémon on a console and handheld BotW without combining the two systems and still have all the development benefits.

Answer this. What is unique about the Switch for someone who has no interest in using it as a portable? And even if they did, it’s definitively less portable than a Vita or 3DS and will likely cost a minimum of $250. The 3DS bombed at that price. Now you’re telling that same demographic to spend that on a larger handheld with lower battery life and requires a carrying case?

Having the option of a smaller cheaper handheld or a more powerful, focused console at the same price is a much safer bet.

I literally said that I’m buying the system for the games but I’m a huge Nintendo fan. I don’t count. The Wii U had some great exclusive Nintendo games and playing them wasn’t enough for my friends to go to a store and drop $360 ($300 + a $60 game) on one. I raved about Link Between Worlds to a friend of mine, but he just has no interest in a portable so he didn’t get a 3DS.

You don’t think that when someone has $320 ($250 + $60 for a game + $60 Pro controller), that they’re not gonna be ticked off that they could get the same experience for maybe $260 if Nintendo just released the same thing without the screen, the separate dock, the mounting mechanism for the joycons, the joycons, the joycon adapter, and the three battery in the unit? And what if they like downloading there games? Then they’re spending an additional $40 for enough space to hold an additional 4 games (assuming they’re all 32GB games).

Having good games is great but the amount of money it costs to buy in, and the experience using the system matters will always factor into how enjoyable it is to play the system.

            1. There’s not much unique (as far as we know) if your buying the Switch for the console experience only. But ask yourself, what’s unique about the Xbox One? If enough 3rd parties opt in, you could get a very similar experience playing the Switch that you would playing an Xbox. Now add in 1st party games and you have a superior experience on the Switch. You bring up the Wii U but that’s apples and oranges. Your friends probably didn’t buy a Wii U because they, like the rest of the world, thought the Wii U was an add on to the original Wii. The Wii U was doomed from the start. No third party support and horrible marketing. And also a flawed idea in general. The Switch is the complete opposite. Fantastic marketing, great 3rd party support, and a great design. No bullshit, no confusion.

Not everyone is into portable gaming, your right. But I think the large majority of gamers are. So Nintendo really just sided with the majority here. I am a firm believer that software sells hardware, always has always will. This has been proven time and time again. Sure, the people who hate portable gaming will still hate portable gaming regardless of the software. I think most people get confused about this philosophy because people will buy hardware without any software, like the PS4 when it launched. But believe it or not they still bought the PS4 for the software. The promise of software to come. You knew if you bought a PS4 you were going to get a ton of fantastic software. The Wii U unfortunately did not share this. We’ll see, I honestly love the portable aspect of the Switch, but then again I love portable gaming. I could understand if you didn’t, how you might not be as excited.

              1. “There’s not much unique (as far as we know) if your buying the Switch for the console experience only. But ask yourself, what’s unique about the Xbox One? ”

That’s exactly my point. Lets say someone’s favorite series is Assassins Creed and they don’t have an Xbox One or PS4 yet. The Switch, XBO, and PS4 would play that game exactly the same apart from it’s graphics. The Switch would likely have the worst looking version, the XBO would be in the middle, and the PS4 would have the best looking version. Now lets assume the Switch sells for $250… that’s exactly how much you can get an XBO or PS4. What reason would that person have to get the Switch? Lets say the Switch was $200 but this person likes downloading their games. Both other systems provide more storage and the expanding the Switch storage would cost them another $40 which makes it only $10 cheaper and it STILL doesn’t have as much storage as the XBO and PS4.

The appeal of Nintendo games only applies to people who like Nintendo games. A lot of people haven’t played a certain Nintendo franchises since maybe the N64. The allure of Nintendo games didn’t get them to buy into Nintendo’s last few systems so it would work with the Switch. You would want that person to go “That’s the best way to play my favorite franchise, Assassin’s Creed” and then maybe they’re pick of BotW since the already have a system that plays it and fall in love with the series all over again.

“Your friends probably didn’t buy a Wii U because they, like the rest of the world, thought the Wii U was an add on to the original Wii.”

They didn’t think it was an add-on for the Wii U. They were fully aware that it was a new system and they played mine a bunch of times. They liked the games they played and two of them were big fans of Mario Galaxy on the Wii, but they never wound up getting the Wii U.

“The Wii U was doomed from the start. No third party support and horrible marketing. And also a flawed idea in general. The Switch is the complete opposite. Fantastic marketing, great 3rd party support, and a great design. No bullshit, no confusion.”

The Wii U wasn’t a generally flawed idea. The Switch exchanges one great experience for two sub-par experiences. One of the same friends of mine that didn’t buy the Wii U, has no interest in buying the Switch.

And one of the reason people didn’t buy the Wii U was not because the gamepad was completely uninteresting but because its use was being tacked on to games that people had already played and beat maybe a year before and could be bought on those other systems for a much lower price. And during the Switch reveal trailer the big third party game coming to the system that everyone was excited about was Skyrim… a game that came out a year before the Wii U was released. Thats literally the same kind of third party support we saw for the Wii U before its release. And considering people are arguing over whether or not the Switch is a handheld first or a console first, I would say there is some confusion.

“Not everyone is into portable gaming, your right. But I think the large majority of gamers are. So Nintendo really just sided with the majority here. I am a firm believer that software sells hardware, always has always will. This has been proven time and time again.”

Yea maybe. The DS was one of the best selling systems of all time so you may be right but you can’t act like a 9.5×4 inch tablet appeals to the same people as the DS. It’s not only less portable but it’ll be expensive for handheld which discourages people from carrying it around. You also can’t compare the tendencies of people to carry general purpose tablets around because they’re using them to be productive (ie. note taking, email, web-browsing, etc.)

“Sure, the people who hate portable gaming will still hate portable gaming regardless of the software.”

Which goes back to my first point. They will only use the Switch as console, so why would they pick it over the alternatives? Now imagine it had the same specs it has now but they took away it’s portability. It wouldn’t need the screen, the battery could be replaced by a hard drive, the dock and the main unit would become one which means it could have more robust cooling and be clocked higher, the joycons (which each have their own battery) and the adapter thing that makes them into one controller would be combined and simplified with only one battery and bluetooth chip instead of two (the joycon each need there own) and the whole system would be even cheaper. Now it would still offer them a less experience (thought better than before) but it’ll have more of price differential to justify it.

“I think most people get confused about this philosophy because people will buy hardware without any software, like the PS4 when it launched. But believe it or not they still bought the PS4 for the software. The promise of software to come. You knew if you bought a PS4 you were going to get a ton of fantastic software. The Wii U unfortunately did not share this.”

You can’t say the PS4 came with the promise of good games and the Wii U didn’t while also saying that the Switch will have good games because of Nintendo’s first party title. If you like Nintendo games, all Nintendo system’s come with the promise. That’s why I bought a Wii U just after Christmas of 2012.

“We’ll see, I honestly love the portable aspect of the Switch, but then again I love portable gaming. I could understand if you didn’t, how you might not be as excited.”

I own a 3DS, DS, GBA, etc. I love portable gaming, too, and I still don’t find the Switch interesting. I never wanted to take my Wii U gamepad on the bus with me, and I won’t want to do that with the Switch. I can fit the my 3DS in my pocket and I don’t have to worry about the screen getting scratch, the controls becoming detached or the analog sticks breaking off and I can play it for quite awhile. None of that applies to the Switch.

                1. I can’t comment on every one of your points, and honestly most of them are kindness of silly. But I will comment on a couple.

Ok, so your friends knew what the Wii U was, but the fact remains most people were confused about it at launch and the following years. And yes, it was a flawed idea. Dual screen console gaming is a flawed idea. And the lackluster sales of the Wii U proves BOTH of my above points.

Also the appeal of Nintendo games goes deeper than you think. It’s not some fluke that Pokémon Go was downloaded over 100 million times. Or Mario Run 60 million times on Apple products alone. By the way, all 160 million downloads were on MOBILE devices. You may not believe it, but Nintendo actually knows their fanbase pretty well. Not to mention your witnessing one of the greatest marketing campaigns in console gaming history.

“So why would they pick it over the alternatives”?

They don’t have to pick the Switch over the alternatives. Just like they didn’t have to choose any other Nintendo device over the competitors. The console market is perfectly big enough to support three consoles. The Switch could easily sell 50-70 million units, next to 100 million PS4’s and 60 million Xbox’s. The general excitement is a lot higher for the Switch compared to the Wii U. Not to mention that 3rd party devs are claiming the Switch will be the easiest of the 3 consoles to develop for. It was the complete opposite with the Wii U. I really don’t see how you could hold the Wii U in such high regard yet hate the Switch. The Switch is what the Wii U should have been.

And I honestly don’t see how you could not find the Switch interesting. It can play as a classic console and is launching with a new Zelda and new 3D Mario with the promise of 3rd party support. You know what I’m most excited for when it comes to the portability? Not taking it on the bus, or to the airport. But taking it to the bedroom. Laying in bed and playing BotW is a dream come true. Laying in bed and playing console Nintendo games in 720p is a dream come true. I’ll probably never take the Switch outside of my house. I never even take my 3ds out of the house. You call yourself a Nintendo fan, but every Nintendo fan I know is shitting their pants with glee. Your the only one I know who is sour over it. Also, we don’t have all the info on the Switch yet. We really only know rumors when it comes to specs and pricing. So most of your arguments are based off rumors. Have you ever listened to NVC from IGN? There are rumors that the Switch game pad will also slide into a VR headset. Don’t know how MNN hasn’t picked up on that rumor yet, but that is very promising. The possibilities are endless if you think about it. The Switch has another trick up its sleeve that has yet to be revealed. I’m happy with it now.

                  1. “Ok, so your friends knew what the Wii U was, but the fact remains most people were confused about it at launch and the following years. And yes, it was a flawed idea. Dual screen console gaming is a flawed idea. And the lackluster sales of the Wii U proves BOTH of my above points.”

How can you say that the second screen was the reason the Wii U failed when the 3DS and especially the DS sold insanely well and both were dual screen devices. How is that proven point? Then you said most people were confused by its advertising, but then why didn’t my friends want one? Well my friends didn’t want one because it was a $300-350 investment to play only a handful of Nintendo games and next to no third party games. They aren’t exclusively Nintendo fans. They like Assassins Creed, Final Fantasy, DragonQuest and other franchises as well.

“Also the appeal of Nintendo games goes deeper than you think. It’s not some fluke that Pokémon Go was downloaded over 100 million times. Or Mario Run 60 million times on Apple products alone. By the way, all 160 million downloads were on MOBILE devices. You may not believe it, but Nintendo actually knows their fanbase pretty well. Not to mention your witnessing one of the greatest marketing campaigns in console gaming history.”

Those were all on mobile devices THAT THEY ALREADY OWNED, Pokemon Go was FREE, and you can download Mario Run for FREE but everybody complained that you had to spend $10 for only a few more additional levels. And calm your tits with the “greatest marketing campaigns in console gaming history” crap. You’re talking about the Switch with that right? Well even Nintendo’s elite fans on this site are claiming we don’t know anything about the system and even we have complaints about it, so you might be jumping the gun with that statement.

“They don’t have to pick the Switch over the alternatives. Just like they didn’t have to choose any other Nintendo device over the competitors. The console market is perfectly big enough to support three consoles. The Switch could easily sell 50-70 million units, next to 100 million PS4’s and 60 million Xbox’s.”

That’s the most priveleged perspective I’ve ever heard. A lot of people don’t buy multiple consoles. Most buy into one because they don’t have the money to buy over $700 worth of hardware that have their own games that sell for $60 a piece. Some buy two but rarely three. If they do buy multiple systems, they’re still picking one console as their main to get multi-platform games on and it’s the game sales for that platform that is where console makers make most of their money from. Beleive it or not, Nintendo would make money if a Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, GTA, or Final Fantasy sells on their system.

“The general excitement is a lot higher for the Switch compared to the Wii U. Not to mention that 3rd party devs are claiming the Switch will be the easiest of the 3 consoles to develop for. It was the complete opposite with the Wii U.”

Go back to articles from before the Wii U came out and you’ll find Ubisoft talking about how easy it is to code for. They even said they thought it was gonna be a huge success. Devs always do this before a new system comes out because they want to be there in case it’s a huge success.

“I really don’t see how you could hold the Wii U in such high regard yet hate the Switch. The Switch is what the Wii U should have been.”

I’m not saying the Wii U was perfect but the Gamepad was like the swiss army knife of controllers, which is awesome. I think they should have made the gamepad slimmer, I think they should have dropped the PowerPC architecture and used a new ARM chip and handled backwards compatibility via emulation. Hell even if they used emulation with the chip they have now so they could better integrate the Wii mode and emulate Wii Speak and the Classic controller with the gamepad and offer better performance and visuals to those games. I also think the Wii U’s specs should have been much better than they were.

As for the Switch, I think it’s smart that it’s using ARM, cartridges, and GPU hardware from company that makes somewhat-mobile chips. What’s dumb about the Switch is its concept. All the stuff about being easy to code for has nothing to do with it’s concept and no consumer gives a shit if its easy to code for. I don’t even know why you care considering you probably aren’t making games. The consumer might care more that the only option they have to expand storage is SD cards that cost a lot of money, they might care that the controller isn’t comfortable, they might care that the price is comparable to other systems yet a lot of games look better on those other systems, they might care that the battery life isn’t great, they might care that they can’t pocket it, and they might care that it can’t play games from their previous Nintendo systems meaning they HAVE to buy game with it immediately.

As I said before, Nintendo could offer the same exact home console experience at an even cheaper price or offer a better one at the same price as the Switch. Like I said before, it could even use a hard drive to hold downloaded games or atleast hold DLC and recorded 1080p gameplay videos.

They could then offer a proper mobile version of the system that is ACTUAL portable that can play the same games and that would be cheaper. Look at it this way. Even if the screen was the same size but the joycons were build into he system(+1 durability +1 affordability), it would only need one battery instead of the three (+1 affordability), the width of the unit(again that’s 9.5″) would be reduced by about an inch because they can be built into the side bezel of system(+1 portability), a proper d-pad could be used, and there wouldn’t be hidden shoulder buttons(+1 affordability). That would also extend the size of the inside of the device to give it a larger battery(+1 battery life). It would still be left with just SD card storage but since downloaded games and DLC would only have to store a subset of the games assets(the mobile assets) and wouldn’t have to store local multiplayer modes and gameplay recordings would only be 720p, it’s less of a problem(+1 storage). Those gameplay videos would be up to 44% smaller and, with the way the math works out, not having to store the top-most mipmap of a texture would reduce the amount of space textures take up by 75%. They also wouldn’t need to store the highest LOD of geometry so that saves space, too. At that point, you can almost make the argument that 128GB of storage in the portable is equivalent to 512GB for a home console.

Instead we have a system that needs to use SD cards because it’s a portable, but needs to store console assets and videos because it’s also a console. To be fair, the Switch uses ASTC so textures will already take up less space and RAM than on the PS4 and XBO, but what I mentioned about mipmaps before still applies. This might sound like silly tech babble to you but this all as very real consumer-facing effects. They will complain about storage, they will complain about portability, they will complain about battery life.

Of course, all this still wouldn’t make a handheld a replacement for the 3DS. It would be a succesor but not a replacement. When the 3DS came out, some people sold their DS and put that money towards a 3DS because the 3DS could play DS games. Some people did the same with the Wii. Since they dropped dual screen support, the Switch can’t even claim it’ll be able to do that later on.

“And I honestly don’t see how you could not find the Switch interesting.”

Because it’s not replacing my 3DS as a system I’ll take on the go and it’s “portable” aspect won’t do anything an improved gamepad couldn’t do for me but DOES remove features from the system.

“It can play as a classic console and is launching with a new Zelda and new 3D Mario with the promise of 3rd party support.”

Yea, I already said I’m buying it because of those Nintendo games, but I’m a huge Nintendo fan so that was a given. I’m also a life-long Final Fantasy fan, so I’ll probably get a PS4 slim and play it on that unless you can convince me that a Final Fantasy XV port on the Switch is going to be the better experience. It’ll control the same and play the same but look worse so what the advantage there?

“You know what I’m most excited for when it comes to the portability? Not taking it on the bus, or to the airport. But taking it to the bedroom. Laying in bed and playing BotW is a dream come true.”

That’s nothing an improved gamepad couldn’t do. Why is it a better idea to build the whole system into the controller at that point if you don’t intend to take it out of the house?

“Laying in bed and playing console Nintendo games in 720p is a dream come true. I’ll probably never take the Switch outside of my house.”

I actually already have the Wii U in my room and it plays games at 720p so I can already do that.

“I never even take my 3ds out of the house.”

But you “love” portable gaming? Have you ever used Streetpass? You’re missing out on one of it’s best features. Why did you buy it? Was it the games? I assume so because you went on about how software sells hardware before. Let me ask you this: If there were a console and handheld that could play the same games, but the console worked like the a better version of the Wii U with a 720p gamepad that would allow you to play games in your bedroom, would you ever buy the handheld? I have a feeling you wouldn’t. I have a feeling you can’t really represent portable gamers at all. That’s probably why you decided to ignore the success of the DS and 3DS when claiming that people just don’t like dual-screen gaming. There are people who are only portable gamers. Being able to play stuff on the bus is the biggest reason they CAN play games. That’s why the GameBoy was marketed towards business men in America.

“You call yourself a Nintendo fan, but every Nintendo fan I know is shitting their pants with glee. Your the only one I know who is sour over it.”

We don’t know each other. I can tell you that I know about 10 people who aren’t impressed with it. And yes, I am a Nintendo fan. I own 5 NESs, an SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, DS, and 3DS and I’m looking to get a Super Famicom and Virtual Boy. I have a plush lakitu in a cloud with a spiney hanging off it hanging form the ceiling. I have a few amiibo (wasn’t so crazy about them) and I’m working on getting the themed Wii Remote Pluses though I only have the Mario one right now. I am Nintendo fan. I have been all of my life but that does not mean they are above my criticism. I want them to do well which is why I’m critical of them.

There are people shitting themselves over the Switch because it sounds like a good idea but that doesn’t mean they thought of or are aware of the compromises that it HAS to make. They’re so amazed that it CAN be done that they didn’t think about whether or not it can be done WELL.

“Also, we don’t have all the info on the Switch yet. We really only know rumors when it comes to specs and pricing.”

Unless they’re going to announce that they shrunk it since the reveal trailer, it has a hidden second screen (but it won’t even support the gamepad), has backwards compatabiltiy (they already confirmed it doesn’t), and has performance akin to the Xbox One and PS4 (it can’t. Familiarize yourself with Tegra chips) then what’s going to make it a better idea? As for the pricing, I already assumed $250 into all my criticism already which already puts it at the same price as the XBO and PS4. If it’s $200, that’s definitely better, but if its $300 then they’ve lost their minds.

“So most of your arguments are based off rumors.”

Rumors that are likely true. I have a bunch of other posts in this comment section where I talk about that. Those leaked clockspeeds make sense if you’re familiar with the Tegra X1. 32GB of built-in storage makes sense if you know flash memory prices. Expanding storage up to 128GB sounds a little strange but makes sense given SD card prices. Also the 3DS is only supposed to support 32GB of storage yet people use 64GB cards in them so you have to consider that too.

“Have you ever listened to NVC from IGN? There are rumors that the Switch game pad will also slide into a VR headset.”

No I don’t listen Nintendo Voice Chat but that’s something anybody could have put together considering the hardware. It would work similarly to gear VR and use the joycons as controllers. I don’t personally care about VR but I do get that VR on the cheap is attractive to people. Too bad the Switch is both too big and too low-resolution to provide a good VR experience. You need high PPI screens for decent VR. In this case the resolution for each eye would drop to 640x720p with lenses that focus on only the middle of each side of the screen. By comparison, a gear VR uses phones with 2560×1440 displays making it 1280x1440p per eye. The Switch would be trying to be three things at once and compromising on all three.

“Don’t know how MNN hasn’t picked up on that rumor yet, but that is very promising.”

I think they mentioned it months ago. It was part of rumor that said that Nintendo tried it but the experience wasn’t good enough.

“The possibilities are endless if you think about it.”

Just because something can do something doesn’t mean it can do it well. A smart phone with detachable controllers and an HDMI out can also be handheld, a console, and VR head set but that doesn’t mean it does them all WELL. My phone can hook up to a dock via USB Type-C(sound familiar) and be used as a desktop but it still not as good as my actual desktop. I can also hook up a controller and play games on it but that doesn’t mean it replaces my Wii U or even my Raspberry Pi.

“The Switch has another trick up its sleeve that has yet to be revealed. I’m happy with it now.”

Probably a software related trick… which is cool because I like cool software features, but unless you think these rumors are completely off and Nvidia made a chip completely unrelated to all its other, than don’t expect to be too surprise with hardware. I’m glad that your happy with it, but I’m sure you would have been happy with any Nintendo released.

I hope that you’re aware that just because you’re fine with it, that doesn’t mean it’ll definitely have mass market appeal. I expect it might have a successful launch but I’m not sure it will keep its momentum after people have time with it.

The Wii U was not a portable device. It’s one thing to look at dual screens when they are side by side. It’s completely different when you have to turn your entire head from your 60″ T.V. to look at a small screen for some gimmick reason. I love dual screens on the 3ds, and I don’t think it’s the last we’ll see of it. Nintendo is not just going to abandon the clamshell design. It has proven too successful over the years. The Switch is NOT a 3ds successor.

“Those were all on mobile devices THAT THEY ALREADY OWNED, Pokemon Go was FREE, and you can download Mario Run for FREE but everybody complained that you had to spend $10 for only a few more additional levels. And calm your tits with the “greatest marketing campaigns in console gaming history” crap. You’re talking about the Switch with that right? Well even Nintendo’s elite fans on this site are claiming we don’t know anything about the system and even we have complaints about it, so you might be jumping the gun with that statement.”

They might have already owned the devices, but my point still stands. You claimed earlier that not everybody likes portable gaming, I was just assuring you that most people do. And the biggest impact Nintendo got from those FREE games (yes I knew they were free, you didn’t have to keep reminding me) was the marketing. I assure you my tits are calm, whatever that means, but 160 million people not only being aware of Nintendos IP but actually playing their IP is massive marketing. Free or not I don’t think you fully appreciate what Nintendo has done here. It’s truly amazing marketing. Nintendo doesn’t have to directly advertise the Switch to advertise the Switch. Advertising their IP and their name brand is just as powerful, if not more so. Breaking news: There were more people searching for and googling Nintendo this year than PS4 and Xbox combined. This is an actual fact.

“That’s the most priveleged perspective I’ve ever heard. Beleive it or not, Nintendo would make money if a Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, GTA, or Final Fantasy sells on their system”

There was nothing privileged about that comment. It was a fact. If that was a privileged comment then there must of been a hell of a lot of privileged people during last console generation. You know, when the Wii sold 100 million, PS4 sold 80 million and Xbox sold 80 million. I have a friend who between himself and his wife only make 35k a year. But they have every console and just about every piece of new technology there is. It’s all about how disciplined you are about saving money. It has NOTHING to do with being privileged. They are not privileged and neither am I, yet I own them all.

“All the stuff about being easy to code for has nothing to do with it’s concept and no consumer gives a shit if its easy to code for. I don’t even know why you care considering you probably aren’t making games”

Yea, no consumer cares if it’s easy to code for. No shit, but the developers care! If a console is easy to develop for then odds are it will attract more 3rd parties to the system. That’s why I care, and that’s the point I was making. The Wii U was the hardest to develop for out of the big three. That alone kept most 3rd parties at bay. The Switch will be the easiest to develop for out of the big three. Look, I know it can be hard to express completely my full point of view through text, but most of my points have been flying right above your head.

“They could then offer a proper mobile version of the system that is ACTUAL portable that can play the same games and that would be cheaper”

Look, you have no idea what Nintendo has planned. How do you know they are not working on a true 3ds successor? I personally don’t think they are just going to abandon their clamshell design. Your idea for Nintendo to just make a vanilla PS4 clone is a bad idea. If Nintendo goes head to head against the powerhouse that is the PS4 they will lose. Why would someone buy a vanilla Switch that didn’t have the portability factor? Not a good idea. Most people are excited about the Switch tablet.

“I actually already have the Wii U in my room and it plays games at 720p so I can
                      already do that.”

Oh please, I own a Wii U, I know what it can do. I’m not talking about looking at a tv, I’m talking about the portable screen only. lol Its very limited on a very underwhelming screen. And my Wii U loses connection when I walk ten feet away from the console. And many games require the use of two screens. And console games did not look very good on that screen… The 3ds is a far superior experience if your simply talking about laying in bed playing video games.

“But you “love” portable gaming? Have you ever used Streetpass? You’re missing out on one of it’s best features. Why did you buy it? Was it the games? I assume so because you went on about how software sells hardware before. Let me ask you this: If there were a console and handheld that could play the same games, but the console worked like the a better version of the Wii U with a 720p gamepad that would allow you to play games in your bedroom, would you ever buy the handheld? I have a feeling you wouldn’t. I have a feeling you can’t really represent portable gamers at all. ”

Well no, I wouldn’t buy the handheld if the console played the same games. But again your assuming that Nintendo is not making a 3ds successor. Two years from now Nintendo could easily release a 3DS-2 or whatever they call it that isn’t compatible with the Switch hardware.

And if I can’t represent handheld gamers then Santa Clause can’t represent Christmas. I bought the original Gameboy when it launched. I also bought the Game Gear, GB Color, Advance, DS and 3DS all on launch day. I will be buying the Switch at launch, as well as Nintendos next true handheld device. Because if you honestly believe Nintendo will never make another dedicated handheld device your crazy.

“They’re so amazed that it CAN be done that they didn’t think about whether or not it can be done WELL.”

But it does do what it’s meant to do well. It plays console games and instantly turns into a mobile device. Not only does it do it well, it does it flawlessly. The compromise, or what you think is a compromise I assume is power. Well that’s not a compromise. Nintendo was never going to make a real powerful console, so there really was no compromise. You talk like the Switch is kind of a jack of all trades, but doesn’t specialize in any one thing. That’s the general idea I’m getting from you. But again your wrong. The Switch specializes in playing amazing software. You can play it on your tv or pull the tablet out and take it with you. It’s quite simple, elegant, and very user friendly. It does what it’s meant to do very well.

I’m glad that your happy with it, but I’m sure you would have been happy with any Nintendo released

No, not true. I’m very critical of Nintendo. Honestly I wasn’t very happy with what they did with the Wii U. It was fine the first two years, but then it was an awful experience. The gaps between games was dreadfully long, and the games they did finally released in the last two years we’re very mediocre. The last two years have been the worse experience I have ever had with Nintendo.

“I hope that you’re aware that just because you’re fine with it, that doesn’t mean it’ll definitely have mass market appeal. I expect it might have a successful launch but I’m not sure it will keep its momentum after people have time with it”

Yea, I’m perfectly aware of that. I’m also aware of the general feeling most people are getting from the Switch. It’s mixed, but it’s mostly positive. I remember when the Wii U was announced it was negative from the start. And only got worse. The overall feeling for the Switch compared to the Wii U is night and day.

So you think it will have a good launch but that it? It all depends on the quality and quantity of software. Your putting too much emphasis on the hardware and not nearly enough on the software. Just like the Wii U, the life of the Switch depends on the software. Will it get 3rd party support? Will it get regular 1st party releases? Will there be long gaps between releases? These are the questions you should be asking. Stop worrying about specs so much.

                  2. Can’t respond to your last post directly because it’s nested too far in. That should really be fixed. Anyway…

“The Wii U was not a portable device. The Switch is NOT a 3ds successor.”

What’s a “gimmick” reason? A gimmick is a like a selling point. True that dual screen gaming has to work differently on the Wii U than the 3DS, but to make the assumption that it was the two screens of the Wii U that lead to it’s bad sales is dumb. It was a variety of factors, including it’s marketing and perceived value: it’s specs for the price. Somehow, despite having Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, a Super Smash Bros for Wii U(which included Megaman, Pacman, Cloud, Ryu, and Bayonetta), Splatoon, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker, and the promise of Breath of the Wild, it still didn’t sell well. It’s almost like you ignored that for the sake of your point. Weird.

Anyway, back to dual screen console gaming. I like to consider it Heads-down Display. While the 3DS can move HUD info onto the second screen and combine it with menu info since its all in line-of-sight(useful because of the resolution and size of the display), the Wii U Gamepad can’t display info that’s needed at a glance but it can show a map, inventory, a chat, or drawing/notes. See, the thing that people forget is that it’s not just used for display, it’s used for dynamic input and is something an IR pointer can’t always replace. It’s the gamepad that is the reason that games like Art Academy and Scribbenauts are possible on the Wii U and its also the reason there’s Miiverse drawings. Considering the amount of open world games tha are coming out, just having a map on that screen already is very useful like it was in Wind Waker. The fact that it can be used without controls would also make it great for MMO RPGs. If you’ve ever played WOW or FFXIV, you’d know that once you click into the chat, your keyboard fully becomes a keyboard and is no longer a controller so sometimes you’ll forget that when something attacks you and you wind up typing “wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww” into the chat while you’re getting your ass kicked. With the gamepad, tapping to enter text will bring up a touch keyboard allowing you to very quickly type your message, and if you get attacked you switch to controlling your character more quickly than you might be able to on the PC version. Likewise, inventory, equipment and character management in those games is also best done with a mouse, which a touch screen can work as. Since it would be able to do all of this without ever blocking your view of your character, it could actual rival or surpass the PC experience for some people. Stuff like this was also the main reason why people wanted Minecraft on the Wii U. They wanted to be able to use the gamepad for crafting and they were disappointed when the version they have that feature.

It’s privacy also provides additional possibilities for local multiplayer. You can have a Dungeons and Dragons type of game where someone can act as the dungeon master and do things in private without the others knowing. The other players would then see things play out on screen. They could theoretically use a Wii Remote to play but if they each had a Gamepad then they could be create there characters at the same time at the start of the campaign and have access to their stats sheet whenever they need it.

The Switch is supposed to have GameCube games on the Virtual Console but can’t have Pac-man VS. or Four Swords Adventures because they both use secondary screens.

“They might have already owned the devices, but my point still stands. You claimed earlier that not everybody likes portable gaming, I was just assuring you that most people do. And the biggest impact Nintendo got from those FREE games (yes I knew they were free, you didn’t have to keep reminding me) was the marketing.”

A cell phone is a communication tool. People carry them around so they can get in touch with people and so that people can get in touch with them. Some also use them for work(some jobs even give employees phones), some run their whole business on their phone, and a lot of people feel safer with one on them. That’s also why some people spend as much as $600 on one. It’s a neccessity to them. Gaming is just something they CAN do on it and most try it out because it’s right there. That doesn’t mean that they’ll be willing to buy and carry around another device for $200+ dollars that’s soul purpose is to play video games.

“I assure you my tits are calm, whatever that means, but 160 million people not only being aware of Nintendos IP but actually playing their IP is massive marketing.”

Yea, 160 million people downloaded it and I’m sure none of them knew about Pokemon before hand. Yea right. It’s clear that Pokemon GO introduced Nintendo IPs to new people but it’s also clear that those 160 million people didn’t buy a 3DS for Pokemon Sun and Moon afterwards. You’re looking at false equivalents. It’s easy to convince your friend to play a free game on a device they already own, it’s another to convince them to shell out $250+ to try something out.

“Free or not I don’t think you fully appreciate what Nintendo has done here. This is an actual fact.”

Yes and that’s fantastic. A brand new game that was a huge trend this year and a brand new system managed to garner more talk than game systems that came out 3 years ago. Yes, it was successful in getting people talking about Nintendo and it’s great that they’re getting their brand out there, but don’t look at that like it’s a sign that the Switch is gonna sell like hotcakes. Some of those results are people looking for a $60 mini-console that allows them to play games they played 30 years ago. That’s why I said “calm your tits”, you’re looking at good marketing and calling it brilliant.

“There was nothing privileged about that comment. They are not privileged and neither am I, yet I own them all.”

So it’s a fault of the people Nintendo’s marketing to for not being responsible with money or for not dedicating enough of their income to video games? That’s a good way to look at things /sarcasm. You know already that the Wii didn’t sell to the exact same market as the Xbox and PS3, right? There were senior centers and schools that bought it, some people got one for Wii Fit. They’re what many call “casuals”. There was clearly overlap between those console bases though (myself included. I own a PS3, too) but only after awhile and many only bought two systems, not all three. On top of that, the Wii became known for shovelware and it often got the worst version of third-party games so those with a Wii and another system, often had larger collections on the other system.

“Yea, no consumer cares if it’s easy to code for. No shit, but the developers care! If a console is easy to develop for then odds are it will attract more 3rd parties to the system. That’s why I care, and that’s the point I was making. The Wii U was the hardest to develop for out of the big three. That alone kept most 3rd parties at bay.”

I’m not saying it isn’t a plus that it’s easy to develop for, it clearly is, but that doesn’t mean the version they’ll develop for the Switch will be superior to the XBO and PS4 versions. Developers go where there is money. Developers took years figuring out how to develop for the PS3 but they supported it the whole time because they saw money in it. If they realize that there games aren’t selling as well on the Switch as they are on the XBO and PS4, they don’t have to continue releasing games on it. How do you try to get them to buy the Switch version of the game? Give them as superior experience on the Switch.

“Look, you have no idea what Nintendo has planned. How do you know they are not working on a true 3ds successor? I personally don’t think they are just going to abandon their clamshell design.”

You’re right. I don’t know what they have planned. I do know that it would rough getting to play the same games as the Switch but since Switch games aren’t being made for dual-screen gaming the bottom screen would be used for fuck-all in a proper 3DS successor unless they release patches. That then brings us back to square one. Both systems would have seperate libraries of games but this time it would be extra annoying because they’d both use ARM processors and cartridges. Surely if they were planning to release a dual-screen handheld like the 3DS that shares things in common with the Switch, we would see signs of that in the Switch’s design. No? Nintendo’s using an Nvidia-made API and no Tegra would be well suited for a handheld the size of the 3DS so they may have to use another manufacture for the SoC and hope they can still use that API or they’ll have to emulate it.

“Your idea for Nintendo to just make a vanilla PS4 clone is a bad idea.”

For guy who just claimed your points are going over my head, a lot of mine are going over yours. I’m not saying they should release a PS4 clone. I think the should release two system that play the same games:a dedicated home console that improves on the Wii U and dedicated portable that improves on what the 3DS did.

“If Nintendo goes head to head against the powerhouse that is the PS4 they will lose.”

Where did people get this idea that Nintendo is incometent when it come to making capable hardware? Do you thing Sony made the PS4’s chip? No, AMD made the SoCs for both companies. Nintendo could have easily made a console that reaches or exceded the PS4s performance for lower price. All they had to do was not use AMD. They could used scaled up mobile parts.

“Why would someone buy a vanilla Switch that didn’t have the portability factor? Not a good idea.”

Something else that went flying over your head. If someone isn’t interested in it’s portability, then to them, IT IS JUST A PS4 WITH LOWER SPECS. You just said you think that Nintendo would lose if they went head to head with PS4, well imagine them trying to do that but with lower specs, no unique features, and possibly even selling at the same price. Nintendo, you, and myself want people to buy the Switch but you and Nintendo want people to be interested in it’s limited portability, but if they aren’t then it’s offering them no advantage whatsoever over the other systems.

The two points I was making with my examples was that 1. you might be able to convince those people to buy a stripped down version of current Switch that’s even cheaper and 2. consoles and handhelds are designed very differently and their seperation allows them to deal with certain issues (controls, storage, size, portability, connectivity, ergonomics, durability, and pricing) very differently and it really isn’t possible to design one system that does both with huge compromising almost every aspect of the system.

“Most people are excited about the Switch tablet.”

                    Maybe most Nintendo fans.

“Oh please, I own a Wii U, I know what it can do. I’m not talking about looking at a tv, I’m talking about the portable screen only. lol Its very limited on a very underwhelming screen. And my Wii U loses connection when I walk ten feet away from the console.”

Your Wii U is broken then. I just test mine out now and it doesn’t even start to drop packets until about 30 away and in another room. It would probably extend further if my room wasn’t filled with filming equipment and if my steel computer case wasn’t in the way.

“And many games require the use of two screens.”

And if those games don’t support a single screen mode like so many do then it sounds like they can’t even be ported to the Switch.

“And console games did not look very good on that screen… The 3ds is a far superior experience if your simply talking about laying in bed playing video games.”

I agree. That’s why it would be cool if we could just pop a game out of a dual-screen console and pop it into a dual screen handheld. If you’re still talking about the screen quality though, the Wii U Gamepads screen is better than the 3DS even if the compression isn’t do well. Just ask my brother’s girlfriend who has extremely bad vision and was able to sort of hold her own when playing Smash Bros on the Gamepad. The Gamepad’s screen is 4.2 times the resolution of the 3DS’s main screen and obviously much bigger.

That brings up a minor point about the gamepad. It allows her to play video games with us. Obviously she would have an easier time seeing the Switch screen but then we couldn’t play with her because it wouldn’t be connected to the TV. My brother also works at library and hosts the libraries game night. He’s set up with 90″ projected screen and whenever they play Smash Bros, a few ask if they can use the gamepad because they can’t see well. Sure they can get glasses, but they’re kids and for whatever reason, perhaps financial, their parents couldn’t get them glasses.

Back to your point about the gamepad reach and quality though, the Wii U came out just before the H.265 standard was completed and nothing had a built in decoder with it. Using h.265 would have increased compression quality while decreasing bandwidth which may have extended its reach all by itself. The Wii U also came out just before the 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard was a thing. Like the Gamepad’s Wi-Fi, 802.11ac is 5Ghz but has a wider range and can switch to 2.4Ghz which further improves range(higher frequencies don’t penetrate walls as well). This would have not only reduced the need to have seperate 2.4GHz Wi-Fi(for internet) and 5Ghz Wi-Fi(for the gamepad) controllers and antennae but it’s possible the gamepad could have been made to Switch to 2.4GHz when it starts to lose it’s connection. They also could have increased the amount of antennae(up to 8 I believe) to increase range. Last but not least, the Wii U came out literally months before the manufacture for all of Nintendo’s screens, Sharp, starting making IGZO displays. IGZO displays use transparent transistor called IGZO that can keep the TFT layer of the screen displaying an image momentarily after the power loss meaning that it can turn itself on off with the display flickering. This generally reduces power usage but particular reduced power usage when on displays that often show static images like the Gamepad. It also improves touch screen responsiveness. The gamepads current battery life is about 4 hours on the battery that came with it, but with an IGZO display it could very well have lasted last 8 hours.

Essentially, there’s lot of ways the gamepad could be improved to offer you a similar or better experience to what you want from the Switch without having to compromise on the console.

“Well no, I wouldn’t buy the handheld if the console played the same games.”

Then you aren’t really a mobile gamer. That why you don’t see the Switch’s size to be such a problem. You don’t have to worry about carrying it around, losing the controls, or the analog sticks get snagged on things. I think you will probably mind the portable ergonomics of the 3DS in conjunction with the comparitively large size and weight of the gamepad though when you’re playing your Switch in bed.

“But again your assuming that Nintendo is not making a 3ds successor. Two years from now Nintendo could easily release a 3DS-2 or whatever they call it that isn’t compatible with the Switch hardware.”

See earlier in my response. Why would releasing a portable that isn’t compatible with Switch hardware be a good thing? If devs want to release the game on both systems they’ll have to design for three configurations on two systems, release them on two different cartridges in two different boxes that sell to two different groups of people. Further more, if they misjudge which system it would be more popular they may have undermanufactured “3DS2” version making it hard to find and having Switch copies staying on shelves. For someone who wants to play that game at home and on the go, they would have to buy both versions.

You see how this all falls apart? Do you see the how the Switch is terrible solution to meet your specific needs?

“And if I can’t represent handheld gamers then Santa Clause can’t represent Christmas. I bought the original Gameboy when it launched. I also bought the Game Gear, GB Color, Advance, DS and 3DS all on launch day. I will be buying the Switch at launch, as well as Nintendos next true handheld device. Because if you honestly believe Nintendo will never make another dedicated handheld device your crazy.”

But would have bought any of those systems if could play all there games on a console? You already answered that. No, you would not. You said you never brought your 3DS out of the house. You’re as much a portable gamer as someone with just a Wii U. You play games handheld but you don’t need a portable system.

“But it does do what it’s meant to do well. It plays console games and instantly turns into a mobile device. Not only does it do it well, it does it flawlessly.”

Really? So when I pull it out of the dock it shrinks in size? Do the analog sticks flatten so they won’t break if they get snagged trying to place it your pocket? Do the higher quality console assets disappear from storage? When it’s docked to the controls reconfigure themselves to be more comfortable to reach or do I need to by a seperate controller for that?

I’m pretty sure it actually gets bigger than when you take it out of the dock because your have to slide the controls into it, the analog sticks still protrude, its max battery life is the same as 3DSs minimum battery life, and it’ll be priced like an expensive handheld and cheap(but not as cheap as it could be) console.

“The compromise, or what you think is a compromise I assume is power.”

Yea, I guess I didn’t explain in previous posts, in detail, how its price, size, storage, backwards compability, and performance are compromised by combining trying to be two things. I guess I didn’t also explain how it doesn’t also compromise any possible VR features, too. I must just be an idiot that angry about gigaflop counts.

“Well that’s not a compromise. Nintendo was never going to make a real powerful console, so there really was no compromise.”

Just because it isn’t a really powerful console doesn’t mean it’s performance couldn’t have been compromised. I already explained how the combining the dock and the actual system would have given it better cooling and allowed it to clock higher. For proof of that, look no further than the Nvidia Shield TV and the Google Pixel C.

“You talk like the Switch is kind of a jack of all trades, but doesn’t specialize in any one thing. That’s the general idea I’m getting from you. But again your wrong.”

It is a jack of all trades and master of none. If it was a master of providing a console experience then it wouldn’t it need to hands down offer a better experience than the current king of consoles, the PS4? If it was a master of providing a portable experience, than it would hands down be more portable than the 3DS? If it was a master of a cheap VR experience, than it would hands down be better than a Google cardboard? It reached none of that criteria. It only does an alright job of all of those. Thus, by definition, it is a jack of all trades and master of none.

“The Switch specializes in playing amazing software.”

                    >_> You’re really corny.

“You can play it on your tv or pull the tablet out and take it with you. It’s quite simple, elegant, and very user friendly. It does what it’s meant to do very well.”

Thanks for commercial. Again, I can say similar things about my phone but that doesn’t mean it does all those things as well as specialized devices. What you described is something getting the job done. It doesn’t mean you can do each of those jobs particularly well.

“No, not true. I’m very critical of Nintendo. Honestly I wasn’t very happy with what they did with the Wii U. It was fine the first two years, but then it was an awful experience. The gaps between games was dreadfully long, and the games they did finally released in the last two years we’re very mediocre. The last two years have been the worse experience I have ever had with Nintendo.”

That can all happen with the Switch, too.

“Yea, I’m perfectly aware of that. I’m also aware of the general feeling most people are getting from the Switch. It’s mixed, but it’s mostly positive. I remember when the Wii U was announced it was negative from the start. And only got worse. The overall feeling for the Switch compared to the Wii U is night and day.”

The response to the Wii was overwhelmly positive then eventually got negative. People expected 1:1 controls of Link’s sword in Twilight Princess then were disappointed when it used “waggle” controls instead. Then when Skyward Sword gave them exactly what they wanted, they complained that it either felt like shit or that they didn’t want to move around a lot.

You know what else was recieved very positively then very negatively? The OUYA. It marketed its self as a cheap, Android-based console and people loved it and backed it on Kickstarter. Then they it came out and they complained that it was just a cheap, Android-based console. People don’t think things through.

One more example that’s more similar to the Switch, the Microsoft Surface. It marketed itself as having the form-factor of a tablet but the power and keyboard of a laptop. People were hyped. It was the best of both worlds. Then it came out and they complained that it’s battery life was much shorter than a tablet and the couldn’t use it on their lap.

“So you think it will have a good launch but that it? It all depends on the quality and quantity of software. Your putting too much emphasis on the hardware and not nearly enough on the software.”

Unfortunately for your argument, the Switch is hardware and the main benefit you can mention for the system is a hardware feature. You just said it depends on the quality of the software. Well, when if it has excellent third-party support than it’ll have most of the same games the other systems and it’ll play the same but look worse. Thus, that software will be lower-quality than on the XBO or PS4. It’s good that you care about software, but the only time the hardware doesn’t matter at all is for exclusives. If people only ever buy exclusives for it than the quantity of software will go down and for the multi-platform games it gets, they’ll be lower quality. How do you not see these problems?

“Just like the Wii U, the life of the Switch depends on the software. Will it get 3rd party support? Will it get regular 1st party releases? Will there be long gaps between releases? These are the questions you should be asking. Stop worrying about specs so much.”

Oh my… you are dense. Lets pretend someone has a PS4 and a Switch. They have no interest in its portablity. They want to buy Dark Souls 3. They have the choice of getting it for either system. They control the exact same way. The ONLY difference is how it looks. Why should they buy it for the Switch? That’s a software question.

You should worry about specs more. I DO think it should be more powerful, but that’s not my point. My point is that portable and home consoles are way more different than you think. When it comes to design decisions regarding ergonomics, size, pricing, controls, features, durability, connectively, and power usage, they’re entirely different. You can have a console and a handheld with the same performance and they would still be designed different, priced differently, and have their own strengths and features.

I look forward to a response that’s truly perspective altering

                    1. I’m dense? So I’m the one that’s dense? Your entire argument is based off an assumption. An assumption that the Switch cannot run 3rd party games at least equivalent to the PS4 and Xbox 1. With all your technical talk the fact is you don’t know. I looked at every gaming site, every article about the Switch I could find, and guess what? I haven’t heard or read anywhere that the games on the Switch will look worse than on the PS4. You, and a couple of other know-it-all’s are the only ones who believe this. You know you might want to call IGN or Gamespot and let them in on your superior insider information! Hell let Sickr know while your at it.

So what happens to your argument if the Switch actually CAN run games on Par with the PS4? (OF COURSE IT CAN!) It washes away. That’s what happens when you base your arguments and opinions on assumptions. Oh yea, and the tablet won’t fit in your hipster skinny jean pockets. Well, tough shit on that one. Every major 3rd party has a Switch dev kit. Don’t you think if they had to downscale their game for the Switch they would have said something by now?

So I’m not a “true portable gamer” huh? So buying every handheld and putting thousands of hours on each device does not qualify me huh? Well genius, the reason I don’t take the device with me anywhere is because it wouldn’t make any sense to do so. I don’t ride any buses to work, I don’t have to wait in long lines, I drive everywhere. I’m not going to take my 3ds to work, lol. I do however take it out of town on business trips though, so I guess there’s that. But what do I know, I don’t represent the true mobile gaming community! Lmaooo

I gave you the benefit of the doubt because you sounded intelligent enough to hold a decent conversation. But your last post was too much. Your a know it all that can see into the future. And I have no time for people like that.

          2. This reply limit thing is killing me

“With all your technical talk the fact is you don’t know. Hell let Sickr know while your at it.”

Hey, Genius, it’s based on a KNOWN chip. You can go out to a store and buy two devices that run a similar chip and benchmark it yourself. You can then buy a graphics card thats roughly equivalent to a PS4, benchmark it and compare the results. Or you can go to gfxbench’s site and compare submitted scores from different products in their benchmark. Grab the scores for the 7850 as reference for the PS4(the PS4 uses the same graphics architecture and claim very similar performance. Technically the 7850 is less capable) and compare it to the top score of the Shield TV running a Tegra X1 with active cooling, and see that the 7850 benchmarks 3.8 times higher than the Shield TV in the Manhattan benchmark. Now those scores aren’t directly equivalent because Nvidia’s Android OpenGL drivers may not be as mature as AMD’s DirectX drivers but you won’t get a 3x increase. In the Switches case, it probably has lower peak shader performance but embedded EDRAM could provide it with a decent performance boost… still not 3 times. The other possibility is that it’s based on a Tegra X2 which can supposedly provide 50% more shader performance at the same power draw but that’s mainly because it can clock that much higher. Tegra X2s also support a memory bus that’s twice as wide which doubles bandwidth but rumors suggest it’s only a 64-bit bus which is the same as the X1, Wii U, Wii, GameCube, and 3DS.

As for Sickr, he can just read these comments. If he wants to ask me some questions. I’ll answer them.

The Switch does have something very useful going for it when compared the the PS4 and Xbox One which is its texture compression which will also increase performance since, from my own testing, I know it does an excellent job making most albedo textures half the size at comparable quality while metalness textures might be able to recieve a larger benefit and normal maps should get atleast a 10% decrease in size. This should all decrease G-buffer generation time but after that, your mainly dealing with uncompressed frame buffers.

Basically, there is stuff that can’t be accounted just by looking at these numbers, but it’s highly unlikely that it’ll have higher raw performance than the Shield TV(based on rumored clock speeds which actually make alot of sense) and that’s not based on assumptions.

“So what happens to your argument if the Switch actually CAN run games on Par with the PS4? (OF COURSE IT CAN!) It washes away.”

Yea? I wanna hear your reasoning, other than blind hope, for being so sure that it is on par with the PS4. You even said it doesn’t compare with the PS4 in your last post. Make up your mind.

“That’s what happens when you base your arguments and opinions on assumptions.”

Nah. Again, I based my arguments on common sense and performance characteristics of similar hardware. You based yours on nothing.

“Oh yea, and the tablet won’t fit in your hipster skinny jean pockets. Well, tough shit on that one.”

Where are you putting together that I’m a hipster? Up until a few years ago I was wearing Tripp jeans that fluttered in the wind and people kept asking me if I was a goth. Then I started whering jeans that weren’t so loose but I make sure I have deep knee-level pockets. Anyway…

How small do you think the Switch is? It’s said to have a 6.2″ inch screen like the Wii U gamepad. That would make the dimension of it (with Joycons attached) 9.45″ wide by 4″ high. That’s not an assumption. You can use a known measurement to figure out the Switches dimensions using promotional photos. It’s something called “math”. That’s less high than the Wii U gamepad but less than an inch less wide. Even if I could fit a Switch in the pocket of one of my old Tripp jeans, that doesn’t mean everyone else has pockets that big. When’s the last time you saw anybody pocket a tablet? I’m honestly starting to think you’re just trolling me.

“Every major 3rd party has a Switch dev kit.”

Really? ALL of them? Sure thing, pal.

“Don’t you think if they had to downscale their game for the Switch they would have said something by now?”

No, I don’t think they would have said something by now. As long as they can get the game running easily, why would they complain? I’m not saying Switch ports will need crazy amounts of effort to run multi-platform games because third parties already do that kind of work for PC versions of games and it’s often pretty simple. They might use lower quality models(which they likely already use as an LOD) or lower qualiy textures(literally just locking to smaller mip-map levels) or changes to anti-aliasing(either shutting it off or using FXAA instead of MSAA) or cutting down on ground clutter and draw distance.

Development could be a breeze and every rumor is saying it is, but rumors from those same sources are saying that, if a PS4 version is running a game on high, the Switch version is running it on medium.

            1. “You even said it doesn’t compare with the PS4 in your last post. Make up your mind.”

No… Actually I didn’t. I was using a hypothetical situation in which if Nintendo made a vanilla PS4 clone they wouldnt be able to compete with the already established PS4. Nice try though.

“Hey, Genius, it’s based on a KNOWN chip. ”

No, it’s not. It’s rumored to be based on a similar chip. Don’t you think Nvidia and Nintendo would customize the chip specifically for the Switch? Maybe even upgraded it a little to match the performance of the PS4 with it’s ports?

“Really? ALL of them? Sure thing, pal.”

Yea, all of them. Well, every major one, like I originally said. Doesn’t mean they are all currently working on games though. I’m sure they have all experimented with it some. One of them is Bethesda who openly admits that Skrim enhanced edition runs great on the Switch. Another one, From Software, has recently got Dark Souls 3 up and running on the Switch. Dark Souls 3 is one of the most graphically demanding games on the PS4, and From Software has very high standards. They openly admit they got the game running up to their standards on the Switch. If the game ran sub-par on the Switch From would have said so. They are not going to allow half assed version of their game to be released….. Anymore. lol Unfortunately they don’t confirm if it’s on par with the other systems though. But the idea of playing the original Dark Souls Trilogy + Demon Souls on the Switch is fantastic. All signs are pointing to a system that can run games on par with the PS4, at least while docked. I’m sure performance will take a small hit in tablet mode, but unlike yourself I am not worried about that.

“PS4 version is running a game on high, the Switch version is running it on medium”

That would hardly be noticeable, if it turns out true. And that wouldn’t bother me one bit. That would just make the system on par with the XBox One, if that was the case. So a portable device that can play games on par with Xbox One? What was your original argument again, cause I have no idea what your crying about anymore.

Look, you might get your wish. The Switch could easily bomb. It could launch to horrible numbers and all 3rd parties jump ship. Maybe if you cross your fingers and say enough Hail Mary’s it just might happen. I can tell you if it does, we may not be hearing from Nintendo for a while. You can bitch and cry about what Nintendo should have done, or you can be happy with what you got. The Switch is what we got. Is it perfect, not even close. But it is what it is. I’m going to stay optimistic until the numbers roll in.

              1. “No… Actually I didn’t. I was using a hypothetical situation in which if Nintendo made a vanilla PS4 clone they wouldnt be able to compete with the already established PS4. Nice try though.”

I’m just gonna use your own quote “The compromise, or what you think is a compromise I assume is power. Well that’s not a compromise. Nintendo was never going to make a real powerful console, so there really was no compromise.”

And I’m gonna repeat this for a third time. To someone who doesn’t care about it’s portability, the Switch IS a vanilla PS4 clone with lower specs. The PS4 and Switch both have one screen, four face buttons, two analog sticks, a directional pad, start, select, share, home, two shoulder buttons, and two triggers though the PS4 has a touch pad and better visuals. You play games exactly the same on both systems.

“No, it’s not. It’s rumored to be based on a similar chip. Don’t you think Nvidia and Nintendo would customize the chip specifically for the Switch? Maybe even upgraded it a little to match the performance of the PS4 with it’s ports?”

Upgrade it “a little” to “match the performance of the PS4”? When a company like AMD or Nvidia makes a semi-custom chip, it means that they aren’t providing Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony with an off the shelf design but someone unique configurations of the different blocks of their chip.

For example, an off-the-shelf Tegra X1 has:

                4 ARM A53 CPU cores + 4 ARM A57 cores. Both are at 2Ghz

Those ARM cores are licensed designs that ARM creates for others to integrate in their chips. In this case, the X1 used what’s called a big.Little configuration. Those A53 cores are less performance but use much less power and take up less space on the chip. They’re used for tasks that don’t need to the performance. When a game is running or anything that needs higher performance, it stops using the A53s and uses the higher performance A57s.

From what Digital Foundry says, the custom chip will just have 4 ARM A57 cores clocked at about 1Ghz(I think 1020Mhz exactly). Since the Switch would only be used for gaming, the lower power cores would almost never be used so they got rid of them. They’re higher performance cores though and thus use more power and produce more heat. Since the Switch needs to work as a portable, it can’t be actively cooled so underclocking those cores by about half would make the cores require less voltage and thus use less power and create less heat.

The GPU of the Tegra X1 is Maxwell based. In the Maxwell architecture, groups of 128 cores are called SMMs. SMMs reside within Graphics Processing Clusters. Each SMM contains 8 texture units and each GPC has 16 raster output units and can contain up to 5 SMMs.

The reason I say that is because Nvidia’s desktop GPUs just have different configurations of GPCs and SMMs clocked at different speeds. Any chip that uses the Maxwell architecture but use a different configuration of SMMs and GPCs than what Nvidia sells to graphics card manufactures is considered custom.

The Maxwell GPU that performs most similarly to the HD 7850,the AMD GPU most similar the PS4s GPU, is the GTX 950. Lets see how much of a difference there is between the GTX 950 and the Tegra X1

                Let’s compare.

                GTX 950
768 shader cores (6 SMMs, 3 per GPC)
                48 texure units
32 ROPs (2 GPC with 16 ROPs each)
                clocked at 1.024Ghz

                Shader cores: 768 (6 SMMs)
                Texture Units: 16
ROPS: 16 (2 GPC with 16 ROPs each)
                Clock speed: 1GHz

                Tegra X1
                Shader cores: 256 (2 SMMs)
                Texture Units: 16
                ROPS: 16
                Clock speed: 1GHz

We see that the GTX 950 has 3 times as many shaders and texture units, twice as many ROPs, and pretty identical clock speeds. This means it has triple the theoretical shader performance and texture fill rate and twice the pixel fill rate. But there are more differences, their memory bandwidth

                GTX 950
                Memory bus-width: 128-bit
                Memory type: GDDR5
                Memory speed: 3.3Ghz
                Memory bandwidth: 106 GB/s

                Tegra X1
                Memory bus-width: 64-bit
                Memory type: LPDDR3
                Memory speed: 1600Mhz
                Memory bandwidth: 25.6GB/s

The Tegra has only 1/4th the bandwidth of the GTX 950. The smaller memory controller and fewer SMMs is the reason why the Tegra X1 uses roughly 15 watts of power max instead of the 90 watts the GTX 950 uses and it’s the reason the Tegra X1 can be used in low-power devices. The one thing different about the Maxwell in Tegra vs desktop GPUs is that each shader core can do two 16-bit operations per clock instead of one 32-bit operation. That improves the performance of things like fragment shaders by 2 times without increasing power draw but only if the two operations arrive one after the other (or something like that). If you were curious, the GTX 950 is about 4x more performant than the Tegra X1 in Gfxbench.

Digital Foundry’s claims for the Switch:

                Shader cores: 256 (2 SMMs)
                Texture Units: 16
                ROPS: 16
                Clock speed (docked/mobile): 768Mhz/307.2MHz
                Memory bus-width: 64-bit
                Memory type: LPDDR3
                Memory speed (docked/mobile): 1331Mhz/1600Ghz
                Memory bandwidth/s (docked/mobile): 21.3 GB/25.6 GB

The difference between 768Mhz to 307Mhz also nearly exactly matches the difference in resolution between 1080 and 720. The lower clock speed when docked likely has to do with it’s small size and lack of direct active cooling. Game consoles keep consistant clock speeds for consistant performance so the Switch wouldn’t be able to occasionally ramp its speed down to avoid overheating.

Like I said before, using some embedded memory for the frame buffer could increase it’s performance but won’t work miracles. If Nvidia had anything they could do to vastly improve performance while keeping power consumption low, they would have done it there own designs already and Nintendo knew how to do that, they wouldn’t have worked with Nvidia.

“Yea, all of them. Well, every major one, like I originally said.”

Okay. Every major one? I’ll agree with that.

“Doesn’t mean they are all currently working on games though.”

                Also true.

“One of them is Bethesda who openly admits that Skyrim enhanced edition runs great on the Switch.”

                That doesn’t mean it’s a graphical parity.

“Another one, From Software, has recently got Dark Souls 3 up and running on the Switch. Dark Souls 3 is one of the most graphically demanding games on the PS4, and From Software has very high standards. They openly admit they got the game running up to their standards on the Switch. If the game ran sub-par on the Switch From would have said so. Unfortunately they don’t confirm if it’s on par with the other systems though. But the idea of playing the original Dark Souls Trilogy + Demon Souls on the Switch is fantastic.”

Running sub-par and looking sup-bar are very different. Also there are plenty of better looking games than Dark Souls on the PS4. From is good at atmosphere and art design. Their games aren’t technical masterpieces by any means.

“All signs are pointing to a system that can run games on par with the PS4, at least while docked.”

No, no signs are pointing to that. The Switch has a good CPU and good development tools so it’s going to be easy to get things to run fine on them, but that doesn’t mean the GPU can provide visuals on par with the PS4 and likely not on part with the XBO.

“I’m sure performance will take a small hit in tablet mode, but unlike yourself I am not worried about that.”

I’m actually not worried about it taking a small hit in performance in tablet mode because there’s no real reason it should. My concern, again, is how each of the experiences the Switch offers stand on there own. You can’t really still be missing my point. It’s a system of compromises. When docked, it’s controls offer the same experience as the PS4 but will lesser graphics. When it’s not docked, it’ll have better graphics than the 3DS and Vita but it simply won’t be as portable or durable while still being more expensive. The only added value the Switch offers is the ability to play them either way, but since it’s really not all that portable then it’s likely many will just keep it docked all the time. Then it offers no reason to play a mult-platform game on it unless someone wants to just play it in bed like you do. But if that’s all it’ll really be used for then Nintendo would have been better off improving the Wii U Gamepad. At least that way you’d be able to play off-TV for longer periods of time while holding a light device with more comfortable controls while allowing the console to maintain dual screen support and get a decent bump in performance because it cold be actively cooled. You also wouldn’t have to store that adapter for the Joy-cons somewhere.

“That would hardly be noticeable, if it turns out true.”

                Depends on the game.

“And that wouldn’t bother me one bit.”

Doesn’t matter. You’re a huge Nintendo fan. You’re gonna buy the Switch and Switch games regardless. Will the vast majority of people care? And what reasoning would they have to buy the Switch version? You have yet to answer that. What makes the Switch version better?

“That would just make the system on par with the XBox One, if that was the case. So a portable device that can play games on par with Xbox One? What was your original argument again, cause I have no idea what your crying about anymore.”

It’s not on par with an Xbox One. Where are you getting that from? You think thats how people port from the PS4 to Xbox One? No. The Xbox One has a better CPU and more frame buffer bandwidth than the PS4 but with 30% less raw shader performance.

“Look, you might get your wish. I’m going to stay optimistic until the numbers roll in.”

I’m not wishing that it fails. I’m wishing that Nintendo would have thought this through more.

                1. We could go back and forth forever. My opinion is not going to change, and neither will yours. All I can say is this, when the Switch releases there will no doubt be side by side footage of PS4 and Switch gameplay all over the internet. I seriously doubt there will be any graphical disparities between the two systems. And even if there is a slight difference I don’t think it would be a game breaker for the Switch. The systems life depends on software. If the Switch gets regular 3rd party support along with regular 1st party support then everything will be fine. Word of mouth is the most powerful marketing tool in the business, and great REGULAR software creates great word of mouth..

And like I said before, we don’t know what else the Switch has going for it. I think there is still a big reveal nobody knows about that could completely change the way we look at the Switch. What if you could access and download content from ITunes or the Apple App Store? Or run Netflix and Twitch on the Tablet? You never know. If I was you I would at least wait until we know everything there is to know before dismissing the console.

                  1. “We could go back and forth forever. My opinion is not going to change, and neither will yours.”

My opinion can be changed if someone provides me with good, well thought out points.

“I seriously doubt there will be any graphical disparities between the two systems. And even if there is a slight difference I don’t think it would be a game breaker for the Switch.”

This is the source of my problems with your statements. You just said you doubt there will be any graphical disparities between the two and if there are, then they’ll be minor. Where are you getting that from though? What makes your think that? I told you how I formed my opinion using benchmarks and facts about the architecture and even used them as examples and by discribing the architecture and what it takes to get that architecture to the level of performance you’re positive it has.

I can understand if you hope that the Switch is going to be on par with the PS4 or XBO and I certainly wish it was, too, but it’s just not. If you can’t beleive me than look at what Emily Rogers has said. She said it won’t perform as well as the PS4 and even performing as well as the XBO is a stretch.

“The systems life depends on software. If the Switch gets regular 3rd party support along with regular 1st party support then everything will be fine.”

That’s one thing you refuse to answer. Why would someone get the Switch version of games over the XBO or PS4 versions? The Wii also got the WWE games and Sports games and the Call of Duty games and the Wii U got Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Call of Duty: Ghosts, but who played those versions? Software is absolutely important and I have no argument against the quality of first party titles that will come out on the Switch but even the Wii U had an awesome Super Mario game, the best Donkey Kong game, the best Mario Kart game, and the best Smash Bros game but the Wii U was still Nintendo’s least successful system. When it comes to third party games, hardware still matter because people need to a reason to buy it for the Switch.

“Word of mouth is the most powerful marketing tool in the business, and great REGULAR software creates great word of mouth.”

I agree about the word of mouth thing but why did you capitalize “regular”? Are you talking about it being released regularly or are you talk about how vanilla of an experience playing games out it will be compared to the Wii, Wii U, DS, and 3DS? And also, what do you think bad word of mouth does?

“And like I said before, we don’t know what else the Switch has going for it. I think there is still a big reveal nobody knows about that could completely change the way we look at the Switch. What if you could access and download content from ITunes or the Apple App Store?”

Why would that happen? How would iOS games work on the Switch? They use a completely different operating systems (iOS is propriatary to Apple and they don’t license it out), different APIs (Apple uses Metal which is propriatary to them and they don’t license it out), and their phones and tablets use PowerVR GPUs so, up until recently, the most popular texture compression for iOS games was PVRTC which is propriatary to PowerVR and they don’t license it out.

“Or run Netflix and Twitch on the Tablet?”

I know you have a Wii U and 3DS. They both have Netflix on it. You know why? Because EVERYTHING has Netflix on it. Why would that be a selling point of the device? And Twitch? Unless you think they’re gonna include a cellular modem and SIM card slot, Twitch streaming is someone that would only be doable when it’s docked which doesn’t give it any Twitch features the PS4 and XBO don’t have. If you just mean watching Twitch then everything with a good enough browser, including the Wii U, can do that already.

“You never know. If I was you I would at least wait until we know everything there is to know before dismissing the console.”

You can’t say stuff like this and then also say that you’re sure it’s going to be on par with the PS4. Every single thing that I think about the Switch is something I think with good reason. I want to hear your REASONS for why you beleive what you beleive, becuase so far it’s just been me presenting my case and you running back to “You should wait and see. We don’t know anything about it yet (but it’s totally on par with the PS4. So many things point to it but I really can’t point to any.)” Then you also had that little “hipser jeans” incident which came out of no where.

                    1. Well, looks like your going to get your wish. The Switch will bomb for sure. I mean what a piece of shit. That was the worst Nintendo console presentation I have ever seen. The main selling point is motion controls. The joycons are the same as a Wiimote and nunchuck,,, Holy shit what a disaster… I was way too optimistic….

No software. None. No third parties, only Zelda and a Mario game that will launch in a year from now… Mark my words, the Switch will not outsell the Wii U… The Switch will be the biggest bomb in Nintendo history, and might just be the end of Nintendo in the home console department.

    3. So your one of those people that like to complain about everything that isn’t the way you want it to be.
You must be fun at parties. No I don’t want cheese on my cheeseburger, only meat damnit!
Why the hell is there foam on my beer?? Hey, I only pay to see Sleeping Beauty’s castle, I’m not paying for all those other rides. I said a lap dance only!
The Switch is what Nintendo wants it to be, get over it… and you call yourself gamingfan.

        1. Ridley 4 Smash Switch X3 (King Kalas X3 is on vacation til further notice...)

“I use logic.” XD I’ve paid attention to your gripes on the Switch long enough to know that is utter bullshit. Thanks for the laugh, though. lol

      1. Complaining about cheese on a cheeseburger only sounds dumb when you call it a cheeseburger. Someone people want hamburgers and some people can’t take the lactose.

As for the more on-top things, you’re acting like there’s never been such thing as a dedicated handheld or dedicated console before, and you act like it’s a shocking revelation that there are people who don’t play handheld systems. And it’s not about shitting on innovation. I know people who loved the Wii and, while they don’t have a problem with the DS, they don’t want one either.

        1. Maybe people who don’t play handheld games will actually try it out thanks to this system and vice-versa. If anyone buys this system and literally doesn’t try it out portably at least once there is something physically wrong with them. Maybe they won’t love it. But some people will. Some people will begin to understand that there’s more then one fun way to game, and both the portable and console market bases could expand.

          1. I don’t think there would be anything wrong with them. Some don’t do portable gaming because they work whenever they leave the house. Likewise, there are people who don’t do console gaming because they’re always traveling.

That’s why it’s really not good that the Switch can’t work as a 3DS successor for some and would be considered weak and comparatively expensive (for multi-platform games) to others.

And please don’t say “Well, why would you buy a Nintendo system for multi-platform games.” because that’s the exact kind of mentality that lead to the Wii U doing as badly as it did.

    4. This is exactly the kind of conversation I knew was going to happen if they tried to sell a hybrid, and I can’t fault you for it. I’m sure a lot of other people feel the same way.

That being said, there’s no BS here. The attachment to turn the joycons into a normal controller (however uncomfortable it is) will likely be included in the box so that’s the console controller setup.

      1. COuld be quite comfortable though… And being able to play anywhere in the house is something I am very surprised someone who doesn’t want a fully portable machine is against.

        1. Being able to play something anywhere in the house is exactly what I can already do with my Wii U or 3DS. As for the Joycon adapter controller, it doesn’t follow the curve of any human-being’s thumb. You need to bend your thumbs inward to use the directional buttons or right analog stick. And keep in mind that the JoyCons are only 4″ long. It’s guaranteed cramping.

          1. That is not true… The Wii U’s range is desperately low… Unless you live in a studio apartment, you can’t play anywhere in the house. Biggest disappointment.

You played the Switch already and had the joy controller in your hand? The wii u pro controller is 4.75 inches tall, but less than four under where your hands fit under the Z buttons and triggers. Not to mention I see a curved “handle” for lack of a better term on the sides of the joycons, so not sure if it will be as bad as you say.

Sounds like forced negativity to me

            1. Sounds like vision to me. There’s a reason why the button layout of the Wii U gamepad was changed from it’s initial design. The original design had the directional pad lined up with the left analog stick and the face buttons lined up with the right analog stick. They did this to reduce the width of the gamepad like it does with the 3DS, however, that’s really uncomfortable. That’s why the current Gamepad has the face buttons and directional pad placed closer to the middle than the analog sticks, it follows the direction of your thumb as it reach down.

Yes, there is a curve to the controller which helps, but the pro controller also has a curve and even that placed the direction pad and face buttons further toward the middle and even elevated them so that the top X button
is above the bottom of the little crater shaped area the right analog stick fits into.

The Joycons, on the other hand, space the left analog and face buttons further from the top, the space out the direction buttons and right analog more to try to make them just a little less uncomfortable as individual controllers, but as one controller, it would require you to do a bit of reaching and to jump your thumb over the left analog to hit the Minus button.

You see forced negativity, but I’ve been thinking about the logistic about something like the Switch for over a year while you’ve had nothing by blind optimism for this thing.

As for how the Wii U gamepad works, yea, its limited, but it was made for the exact purpose that you described and it came out before things like 802.11ac was finalized so a follow up on that idea would improve significantly improve its range.

              1. Assuming…hmm, its just like rumors…can’t tell off bat but making guesses that can make you or break you.

Never assume…waiting is the best medicine when your having doubts about the system.

In other words, don’t guess because you don’t know, when its time, they will tell…once its out, then judge, until then, just sit back and wait.

                1. Rumors aren’t assumptions. Rumors are unconfirmed information. Laura Dale, Emily Rogers and Eurogamer all have sources that they get their info from and were completely right about what the Switch was so they clearly have good sources. The reason any new info from them is called a rumor is because it hasn’t been confirmed by Nintendo, everyday people, or hackers taking a look at the hardware yet. That’s very different from an assumption.

An assumption is a guess and yes, you can say I’m making a lot of guess, but believe me they’re not random assumptions.

When I tried to put together what the battery life would be like by taking the performance characteristics and battery life of another Tegra X1 tablet then applying what I know about how video game systems perform, then adjusted for the size of the Switch, I guessed that the Switch would have a 2.5-3 hour battery life. Then several hours after the Switch was announced, a rumor claimed the battery life would be 2.5-3 hours. You may see that as being just as much of a rumor as any other but the information Laura was given by her sources matches with what I was able to put together based on known data.

Same thing with clock speeds. A lot of people saw those leaked clock speeds as being a completely bullshit rumor (mainly because they didn’t like it) but everything matches up. We heard for awhile that it uses 720p screen and games are supposed to target 1080p when undocked. Well 1080p is 2.25x more resolution than 720p and the rumored clock speeds show a 2.5x increase (307.2Mhz to 768Mhz) so that adds up. So that’s clearly not as crazy as people were making it out to be, that’s just the kind of difference in performance it requires. That’s using known data to arrive at a conclusion. So whether or not that’s the exact clock speeds, that’s the kind of difference in clock speeds that people will see and that’s not an assumption, that’s a requirement.

So why is it that the clock speeds seem viable to me? Well, we can go back to that Tegra X1 tablet. Like the Switch, it also doesn’t run at the X1’s full clock speed of 1Ghz due to its lack of active cooling, so it runs at 850Mhz. It’s a much larger tablet though so it’s able to dissipate heat better and can throttle down to reduce heat. That’s something that dedicated video game systems don’t have the luxury of doing because they need to offer consistent performance. So the first step to dealing with that would be to underclock the chip more in the Switch. Now, the Switch at least has a fan in the dock which should help indirectly cool the SoC so it doesn’t have to be underclocked that much to keep cool. So it would likely have to be underclocked but we don’t know by how much. Even if it could stay clocked at 850Mhz though, the highest it would be clocked as a portable would be 378Mhz (if it scaled with resolution exactly) or 340Mhz (if given it same amount of overhead). We can hear that that rumors is very probably very close to the truth if not completely true.

You see what’s being done here? I’m using known information, to assess how close to the truth certain rumors may be. And considering the track record of some of these people, it’s time to stop looking at all rumors as being equally (un)trustworthy. It’s called verisimilitude.

              2. Blind optimism… or just, waiting to have it in my hands so I can make an informed decision?

I applaud your thorough thought process however and I will keep these things in mind when I do have the Switch.

The wii U premise was good, but still I think the connectivity could have been better (or upgradeable) so I could play with a wider range around my home (maybe a booster accessory could have been made to link it to different areas of the home, but it doesn’t matter now)…

I guess the idea of bundling the Switch with the procontroller would be better, but the WiiU wasn’t either… maybe down the line.

                Thanks for a thoughtful response.

                1. A booster would have been possible but I don’t think the connectivity of the controller could have been upgradeable because the Wii U itself wouldn’t support a new standard of Wi-Fi. The other possibility would have been to use 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi because it would have been able to penetrate walls better than 5Ghz but I’m assuming the bandwidth or latency wasn’t what it needed to be.

One thing they could have upgraded about the gamepad was it’s size and screen. The resolution would have to be the same but they could have used an IGZO display (something that Sharp starting making right after he Wii U’s launch) which can maintain an image momentarily after power loss. It’s perfect for saving power (sometimes over 50%) when displaying non-moving images which would be perfect for the stuff the gamepad often displayed. It would have increased battery life without having to increasing battery capacity. Pair that with an ambient light sensor and the batter life could have been extended for another hour at least.

                  1. Yes very true… I love the wii U and its original concept… whether it was rushed or rather, was halted in terms of any further upgrades because of its poor performance commercially is unclear, because rarely has a system been upgraded beyond making a “slim” version or adding colors and such, but the Wii U was unique with the gamepad, something that I will miss in terms of having two players, one on the screen and one on the gamepad.

Either way, a flawed but useful system and the gamepad does feel good in the hand even if originally it appeared it would be clunky.

        2. I love the idea of a portable console. I’m a huge fan of the WiiU gamepad and did 80% of my gaming on it. (Prior my buying a second console not long ago)

If switch can pull off the 3D party support, and we can buy an extended battery, I’d be thrilled.

      1. I’m 110% sure the dock comes with the system, that is confirmed. I believe that was meant was that the dock will be released “by itself without the system” for cheap after six months.

    5. It is portable first, dude. Nintendo didn’t want to impact 3DS and Pokémon sales and that’s why they are saying it won’t replace the 3DS but it definitely will. Portable is the only place Nintendo is selling at. Nintendo is done with traditional consoles. This is the 3rd console in a row to deviate from the home console market. Are you saying you really didn’t see that coming?! Even the video reveal showed it in portable use for 90% of the video. And with it’s rumored $250ish price (same as the initial 3DS launch price). Nintendo home console have consecutively sold less each gen (with the Wii being a lark). The Wii U is the worst selling and had the smallest library of all. It only make sense for them as a hardware company to go portable first.

      1. The 3DS sold like shit at $250. They very notably had to drop the price before it started selling.

Besides, Nintendo has been marketing it as a home console from the beginning and has stated its a portable second.

            1. Oh no, not saying you made it up at all…but your saying it like you want it to fail and it sounds like your not liking it at all regardless of you’re proof. as I said before, trying to save you from being a jackass…just like deepsouth is.

              1. I’m stuck in a spot where I don’t want it to fail, but I don’t want more “hybrids” as it’s an inherently flawed idea. It also really bothers me that some people begged for this and now they’re surprised and disappointed by aspects of the system that they should have seen from a mile away.

                1. that’s because they are fools taking in the rumors as fact. If that next reveal turns out better than they expected, they will look the fool including the haters. As for me, I’m taking every rumor with a grain of salt because its safer and I won’t be a jackass for saying otherwise. Now if the rumors come true, then they and you have every right to shit all over it.

                  1. I can respect that. Sorry if I sound like an asshole at all. I just want Nintendo to make good decisions.

And you’re right. Deepsouth is to the point that he’s pretty much romanticizing the Switch.

    6. That’s just stupid talk: the joy cons have all the same buttons as any standard controller, and it makes sense that they come packaged with the console since, you know, hooking up to it is HOW THEY CHARGE.

The system focuses around home console games, the battery life won’t likely compare to the 3DS when the Switch runs full tilt, the system’s greatest performance comes out when the dock is present, and it is replacing the Wii U instead of the 3DS.
Anyone with a brain worth using can see that portability is the secondary, not the main. You’re just throwing a tantrum for no reason; either learn to like the Joy cons, get a pro controller, or skip the system, but whatever you plan to do, stop with the whining.

      1. Digital gamer here! Upgrading to 128 gig’s is horrendous. :/ I hope it’s false. It’s just a rumor, right?

Not getting Mass Effect, no Rockstar support… we’ll, everyone knows how I feel. I’m good to go. I’ll get Zelda on my WiiU, and game elsewhere until Switch is deep discounted or bundled by retailers. The first holiday there will be bundles. If I wait a second holiday it will be cheaper. IDK… I’m not feeling optimistic about switch, not enough to early adopt anyway.

          1. Not really. And yes, look at WiiU. Retailers may have not dropped the price right away, but it didn’t take long for them to bundle games cheap or at no cost. Which is effectively getting it at a discount. ;)

        1. You can always try a 512GB MicroSD card anyway but that’ll cost you about $300.

You want a device to also work portably, you need to use a small, low-wattage, portable storage AKA SD cards.

          1. Yeah. I mean, I’ll do what I have to. With any luck SD cards will drop even further in price. (The big ones) And I if switch gets an exclusive I really have to have, then I’ll just have to buy the cartridge. But games like Xenoblade X? If that gets a re-release, I’d want it (or any game I could pump serious game time into) as digital, so I can boot it anytime, regardless of what game is jacked in.

                1. Ridley 4 Smash Switch X3 (Dragon Ball Super & the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z Kai both air 1/7/17 on ! Yay!)

I got a ton of digital stuff on my n3DS, too. Gotta love a 32GB for a handheld! :D

            1. Haha. thanks Nova. ;D I was going to attempt a long explanation, but you have it covered quite efficiently!

              1. King Kalas X3 (Ridley 4 Smash Switch!)

What he meant was if maybe you left Nintendo once & awhile, you’d realize digital gaming is just as good, if not better, as physical gaming. I understand if you think digital is bad since Nintendo were fucking idiots & made it to where everyone’s digital purchases, and save data, are locked to Wii U consoles, giving the impression to Nintendo only gamers that digital is evil incarnate. If Switch doesn’t fix that, you’ll probably continue to be under that impression til you escape the vacuum you’re trapped in under Nintendo’s tyrannical thumb. Unless, as I said, Switch does away with the console locked bullshit.

                  1. King Kalas X3 (Ridley 4 Smash Switch!)

“pfff nice 10yro comeback, get a life pls” Then he goes “bla bla bla” as if that’s not a 10 year old comeback itself. lol Time to remove those Nintendo blinders, bub.

      1. Yeah, that’s kind of a pain in the ass. XD
And if I HAVE to buy a physical game, and haul a couple around, I’d MUCH rather it be a cartridge than a disk. Nintendo carts are damn near indestructible!

    1. That’s what happens when you decide to pair all the weaknesses of a portable with a console. You won’t need to do installs with it because cartridges will be fast enough, but it’s still flash storage and costs way more per GB than HDDs.

  4. “No mass effect andromeda or red dead redemption 2”
Here we go again. I think I’ll get a ps4 for my birthday instead. Not going through this again.

    1. I got a NextBox and have been happily catching up on games since. Nintendo doesn’t need your money, nor do they care. Get a system you can play games you want on. Exclusive loyalty to Nintendo will only end in frustration. :)

      1. Nextbox? You mean Xbox One? I got rid of that when I got a gaming pc that has the same games with better visuals and free online lol.

I think I was overeating a bit there. I’m still waiting until the January 12th event before making a final judgement.

        1. By NextBox, I meant a PS4 or X1. (I don’t have brand loyalties to either)
But yes, I chose the X1. After gaming exclusively with Nintendo for 20+ years, I’m in awe of how gorgeous games are these days. Not to mention catching up on all the games I’ve been missing out on.
I happy for you enjoying a PC rig. Whatever works for you. I prefer the convenience of a console and am perfectly happy with my $300 PC-wanna be Xbox. Lol

          1. Ridley 4 Smash Switch X3 (Dragon Ball Super & the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z Kai both air 1/7/17 on ! Yay!)

Just like I’m perfectly happy with my 400 dollar PC wanna be PS4. (400 bucks because that was the price of the Star Wars Battlefront bundle that came with the awesome Darth Vader PS4 at the time of Holiday 2015.) I don’t regret a single dime since it’s taken over my life for the last year and will probably continue to do so even when Switch releases. xD

      2. I wish I could enjoy my Xbox One. I was the biggest Xbox and Xbox 360 fanboy of all time. But my experience with the online service, laggy UI, and the shit they’re calling “Halo” nowadays has swayed me away completely.

    2. The PS4 is not worth it. Neither is the Xbox One. I think you should wait a little longer and see what the Switch has to offer before making that decision. If the Switch sucks, then you can choose which is the least sucky.

    1. I got no beef with you, but ME3 was not only an amazing port, it was better and included more content than the version everyone else got until the patch/DLC if I remember correctly. It had a log of people online and was one of 3 games that kept me from selling my WiiU while Nintendo fucked around for almost two years learning how to program in basic HD.
I can still get on and find people to game with to this day and visually it’s just gorgeous.
So don’t knock ME3 CAP LOCKS ARE STUCK man!

The decision to release the trilogy at the same time was a shit marketing decision tho…

        1. OK, so there are sorted out there on this. Nintendo do launched WiiU with little High Def development experience. That is one reason for the game drought, as well as why they use so many flat textures. Wind Waker was basically their learning how to develop in HD. Nintendo spent so much time dicking around with Standard definition, when it came time to develop games in HD, they were not prepared. So everyone who bought Windwaker HD, funded Nintendo devs learning to program for modern times. (I was one of this people who bought it)

          1. Ridley 4 Smash Switch X3 (Dragon Ball Super & the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z Kai both air 1/7/17 on ! Yay!)

Like how Pokemon X, Y, Omega Ruby, & Alpha Sapphire was GameFreak practicing how to use 3D models because they stuck with 2D sprites for so damn long.

      1. Ridley 4 Smash Switch X3 (King Kalas X3 is on vacation til further notice...)

That’s what really screwed Mass Effect 3 on Wii U over. When people realized you could get that game plus two free games for just 60 bucks on another console, that was all she wrote right there. We’ve discussed this subject before so you know I’m one of those people. lol

  5. They would have to look in to the mirror to find the reason why ME 3 sold like shit, but of course they would not see anything there.
Bought the Wii U version from bargain bin not too long after launch.

  6. Sounds good.

Console remains cheap, it is easy to charge so 3 hours isn’t a big deal… micro sd cards are cheap too, so that is fine… Pro COntroller extra is what it is and if the joy con controller apart from the screen feels good… then that is fine too.

    Jan 12… where are you?

    1. A 512 micro SD card will run over $200. Not cheap given the price of 1-2 terabyte hard drives.
The since we may be limited to 128 gig if the rumor is true, it won’t matter… and 128 is 3 digital games for X1. The silver lining is that huge AAA games probably won’t release on Switch, so again, I guess 128 is OK maybe. :/

      1. I guess you could buy the cartridge though right? I guess I don’t understand all the complaining… System looks very cool and very likely to have some great games. That is all that matters

        1. I could buy a cart, but what non-downloaders don’t understand, is how much people like me enjoy having their library accessible without changing hard media. Different folks, different strokes!

      2. 128 will likely fit more than 3 games. Devs on the xbox and ps4 have no reason to compress anything since they have 50 gb on a dual blu ray to work with. A little compression will go a long way.

        1. They do compress a lot already. If you look at the contents of Forza Motorsport 6: Apex. Everything is compressed. The advantage the Switch has is that it supports ASTC so those textures could be half the size. Though that doesn’t mean they compress just as much.

        2. I agree, it will fit a lot of indie games, and Nintendo doesn’t develop realistic games or textures, and have minimal partial effects, so several Nintendo games. but the games I get huge playtime out of… those are huge. even Xenoblade X would take over 1/5 of the Switch free space.

  7. If I get switch, I’m waiting for the multicolored systems. Tired of being screwed over with boring colors because I choose to be a day one supporter. Not this time Nintendo, not this time.

        1. Well at the very least I would think you can do a system transfer the way you can with the Wii U. But I’m hoping for a universal account system so we don’t have to deal with that hassle.

        2. You mean from the Wii U to the Switch or Switch to Switch?

Either way. Nintendo Network IDs already are a universal account system. You don’t have a Wii U account, 3DS account, and an internet account. You have one account with your purchase history, wallet, and Miiverse and can be accessed from your 3DS, Wii U and a web browser.

What you’re asking for use user-controller account management. You can already ask Nintendo to transfer your account from one Wii U to another via the phone but you can’t do it yourself via a web browser or system. Saying they don’t have a user account system right now is just wrong though.

    1. I would normally agree with you, but black and grey are my colors haha. I will wait for a bundle though. Get a couple free games from retailers looking to move inventory. (After the expected rush and initial shortage of course)

  8. 3 hours battery life for on the go,seems again, way to short. The whole advertisements are about how you can play your console games on the go and then its only 3 hours?Come on nintendo, dont save at points youre trying to advertise with.I mean i dont really need that feature, because i want to enjoy my games in peace on the couch, but that is kinda sad.
Maybe you can scale it down to lower resolutions or so,to make the battery last longer, still sad.

    1. 3 hours non stop isn’t that bad tbh. Ok 4 to 5 would have been better, still chances are the Switch will get a removable battery. A smartphone doesn’t last that much longer when gaming on it for 3 to 4 hours straight + a smartphone doesn’t need to process games like Breath of the Wild. So taking all that into consideration, 3 hourse isn’t that bad either.

        1. If it has usb 3 then you could use any old battery pack to power it longer. Personally I will be fine. I have never gamed more than three straight hours on a handheld anyways.

        2. I hope that’s not true. I don’t mind if we have to use an external battery brick, but I don’t want a situation like with Apple, where you need a service center to replace a bad battery.

          1. Ridley 4 Smash Switch X3 (Dragon Ball Super & the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z Kai both air 1/7/17 on ! Yay!)

Exactly. I don’t trust sending my stuff off when I already have data on it. Now if I can save my stuff on the net or some external device, it’s not an issue as I can just format the system before sending it off. If Switch does console locked bullshit again, not being able to change the battery MYSELF is going to be a big strike to why I won’t get Switch. If I even get it at all if stuff is console locked.

    2. That’s for the max clock. If it will be at 40% of its GPU power, then it can be 4-5 hours, depending on the CPU consumption.

    3. It’s about the same as the 3DS if you used wireless or 3D on the go. Also, look at her wording. She said something about the max settings on the go. Are there lower settings?

      1. Well rumor has it that the cpu will be throttled when undocked. So if its 3 hours on max settings, and the rumor says that itll be bottlenecked by 40% when undocked, so its safe to asume that the switch will last about 5 hours.

Although, “max settings” doesnt necessarily mean CPU working at full speeds. It might just mean working with wifi/LTE, high brightness, high volume, ect, ect, on at the same time.

    1. Developing emulators takes a lot of time. If they target emulation at standard definition first, then they can get things out quicker. Later on, when the its more optimized, then they MIGHT have them run at 1080p.

As it stands, the only basis for comparison we have is Dolphin running on the Shield TV with Vulkan which is seems to be able to do. However, while the Switch is rumored to use just the higher performance cores of the X1 (the A57s), they’ll be clocked at half the speed. CPU performance shouldn’t have a huge effect on resolution but it does decrease emulation speed in general would give the GPU less time to draw the complete frame.

  9. Sorry to ask this, nothing against gay community, but… First i though Laura was a girl, but now that i see her/him with more attention… it’s seems like he’/she..wefnewrpfginr Really wtf is Laura? =S I’m confused.

    – 3Hours sucks, i don’t want to be able to charge the device quick, i want to NOT charge it too many times in a day if i’m outside.
    – Please no more friend codes, just a fuc… FRIEND Request button! That’s all Nintendo! SImple!!
    – Entry bundle? 32GB? Are you nuts Nintendo? Really? Minimum 64GB and that’s nothing. At lease 250GB dude.
    – No more Colors? Another crap, you know that colors was a good idea in the N64/GC Era.
I always desire two or more consoles just for the sake of collecting. Nintendo this is about Choice!
    – We need a ProController + 1 Game Bundle at $350. :)

      1. What I meant is that with the 3DS, you get a minimum battery life of 3 hours with 3D and wireless on. And on the Switch, on maximum settings, you get 3 hours, which makes me wonder if there will be some form of “minimum” settings.

  10. Pingback: Laura Dale è in vena di spifferare altri rumor su Nintendo Switch - ARCADE 24

  11. 3 hours of battery life with everything at max…
    2017…
I really hope battery makers make battteries last waaaaaaaaay longer.

    1. It’s not the batteries fault. They’re using a high-powered tablet SoC in a small enclosure. This is exactly why you don’t see phones with Tegra chips in them.

    2. Considering that Switch is primarily a home console, it’s a minor point. But I can see how bad this can be. I just wait to be able to turn off wireless communications and do another power saving options in order to make the battery last longer enough to entertain the user during a plane travel, for example.

      1. Wi-Fi would use next to no power compare to a the CPU and GPU workload while playing a game. The biggest power saver would be turning down the screen brightness.

  12. Nintendo’s gonna screw this up again as usual. why didn’t they make it a regular console with an nvidia x2 chip so that they can compete with PS and Xbox. this is just too sad to watch

    1. A regular console wouldn’t be a Nintendo console. Period. PS and Xbox are there for this, Nintendo consoles are for people playing Nintendo exclusives and enjoy new ways to play.

And, is Switch not “regular” enough? We have a no-gimmick controller this time, a powerful machine, a single screened handheld, cartridges. The most “gimmicky” would be the possibility of hooking up on a TV.

  13. My biggest concern is the console’s memory. My 500GB PS4 is already filled up, and I keep having to delete other game files just to play a new game. Which SUCKS! Are people going to have to buy dozens upon dozens of SD cards just to save their games? That would truly SUCK!

    1. Do you download games or get physical copies? If you get physical copies of games, then you won’t need to worry. The PS4 and XBO require you to install games to your HDDs because optical disks are slow. Cartridges are far less latent than optical discs or hard drives and can easily be much quicker.

If you DO download your games, then yes you’ll need to buy more SD cards.

P.S. While storage is technically memory, most people use memory to refer to RAM.

        1. That’s a possibility. The constant swapping back and forth will decrease the lifespan of the flash memory though.

      1. OK, but do you think a 40 or 60 gig game will fit on a Nintendo cart? If yes…and Digital gamers suck it up, it might work. But even then, the updates and Dlc would wipe out whatever space is left… I’m worried, but not giving up hope. Maybe Nintendo has a solution to all this, yeah?

    2. I have 1 terabyte on my x1, and I have to delete games also. :/ (and I don’t have THAT many games!)
I don’t think Nintendo is planning on getting games like Doom, Battlefield 1 or other Huge games on their console. I don’t even know if it has enough ram to load them.
I really really want to be wrong.

    1. At least, these are the most credible and non-sensationalist rumors I’ve ever seen. There are so many fantastic and unrealistic Switch rumors out there coming from overhyped people that are making me give up from gaming news websites.

  14. Pingback: Overwatch, Mass Effect Andromeda e Red Dead Redemption 2 non usciranno su Nintendo Switch?

  15. to my Nintendo team, Can I suggest that after the reveal, someone in your team go through all the rumours reported by her and report what she got right, what she got wrong and what cannot be verified?

I think you will give to you readers something to talk about. Well my opinion and suggestion.

  16. Oh my Glob!!!!

I have sat here on my luxury office chair designed for long periods of sitting (for my studies) only to find myself wanting to get up and stretch my legs to clear my head from all that I have read.

Tons of regulars here (I am one also but I haven’t signed up yet because i’m an idiot I know but call me T) have made incredible points regarding the specs, the controller layout, the rumours or unconfirmed information i think i read somewhere to the “i’m not gonna buy it because i hate portable gaming, so i don’t wanna have to pay for that bit of the system” sigh!

I feel now is the time to add my 2 pence as the heat has cooled off, briefly.

At what point do we as gamers totally forget that being gamers is about the games!!!!!!!! I don’t but consoles for how pretty, fast or innovative they are but simply to be able to game, enjoy and find soon to be classics imo.

Consoles like NES were slated due to their controller being a cramp machine….. but I and millions of others loved almost every second of the console and its plethora of games, many which are classics and loved to this day…. just look to the mini NES reports.

Gamecube pad and console, trolls were out in numbers on this classic machine…. amazing games well loved and sought after.

N64 pad and console had haters too….. amazing games well loved and still sought after like the gamecube.

My point, give the damn thing a chance… we all could learn to look for the specs of something and snub our noses down at it like the rich pompously do to the poor if it isn’t to your satisfaction but what about enjoying the games…. good graphics does NOT make a good game!!! PS4 is living proof of that. For all we know this could produce some classics and have us loving the GAMES as gamers are supposed too…. not complaining that it doesn’t resemble a movie or that some textures were not to my satisfaction.

Some of the best gaming experiences of my and I dare say some of your lives were on significantly weaker, poor designed and ill received consoles… but it didn’t stop you then… whats the problem now…. elitist?

    ‘T’

    1. I have no doubt that the games will be good but unlike on the NES, most games that come out now won’t be exclusive to the Switch. You can play them on other systems. And if those games play the same on all three systems, all the three systems cost the same, and the game costs the same on all three system, but it is only the graphics that are different, then why wouldn’t you buy the console and version that allows you to play that with the best graphics?

If someone is a huge Nintendo fan then that will ALWAYS be an incentive to get a Nintendo system but in order to expand size of Nintendo’s base they need a system that looks attractive to non-Nintendo fans. I do know some people who are really interested in the concept behind the Switch and the added value of being able to play there games on the go would be enough to make them get the Switch version of games. Those same people are also huge Nintendo fans and would have gladly bought a handheld to do the same thing though.

I completely get your point about graphics though. One of my favorite games I played in the last two years was Ufouria for the NES and the year before that was Final Fantasy III for the NES. But when it comes to buying new hardware, people are always wary about buying things they percieve as weak or antiquated when they’re spending hundreds of dollars. At the very least, they want bang for their buck. Thats why the PS1 was more successful than the N64 and even I got more games on the PS1 back then despite having no emotional investment in that brand. As a kid, I had no real preference between the two but I could walk into a Software Etc with $80 and buy two or three PS1 games or only 1 N64 game and if the PS1 game was an RPG, it came on 3 or 4 discs so I knew it was going to be busy playing it for a while. It gave me more bang for my buck. Unless someone into playing their games on the go and is okay with it being so big, the Switch and the Switch version of games offers no added value to the other systems.

    2. If you had a friend screw you over BAD, TWICE, and you told people the shit you just said, “Give them a chance!” That’s just fucking stupid.
People have a right to be skeptical, or where you born yesterday?
      If so, I apologize.

    3. Ridley 4 Smash Switch X3 (Dragon Ball Super & the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z Kai both air 1/7/17 on ! Yay!)

What weaker consoles are you even talking about? The only weaker console I recall ever playing on in its generation was the Nintendo Wii. The rest were all powerhouses at the time of the generation they were in: NES, SNES, N64, & Gamecube. I honestly think all you people defending Nintendo’s stance with gimmick & weak architecture over power either only played games til during the Wii era or just had no idea before Wii that all of Nintendo’s consoles were powerhouses. Only Wii & Wii U were weak consoles.

  17. Ridley 4 Smash Switch X3 (King Kalas X3 is on vacation til further notice...)

    No friend codes!? Yay!

I have to question this one. Take Two, if I remember correctly, is listed as a 3rd party developer of the Nintendo Switch. And guess what!? They OWN Rockstar Games! They also own 2K. These guys might not have much of a choice in the matter if their parent company tells me to make games for Switch.

Don’t expect a delay? So March 2017 is set in stone?

Bluetooth, eh? I would think this would be a given these days since the Wii U used some form of Bluetooth.

One of my biggest issues with the Wii U I had was the fact Gamepads were not being sold in stores, either retail or online.

No pro controller bundled with Switch!? That won’t be too bad if Wii U Pro Controllers can be used on Switch. If not, oh well and I’ll get over it eventually. Hopefully the actual Switch controller will be just as comfy to me as every past Nintendo controller so I won’t have a need for a pro controller in the first place.

3 hours of battery life when the Switch is at max power? So like a laptop or 3DS, there will be the ability to decrease the drainage of the battery.

USB charging port? Looks like I’ll be buying me a USB that I can plug into a power outlet so I won’t be at the mercy of having to plug the controller directly into the Switch & thus have to wait a few hours for it to fully charge before gaming on the Switch again.

As long as these games don’t look like Skyward Sword did on Wii U with the HD on, I’m good.

January 12th better tell us for certain if & when we’ll get the choice of multiple colors.

*eye twitch* 32GB!? Are they… Seriously!? And only 128GB if I hook up a Micro SD Card!? *facepalm*

Oh I wonder WHY Mass Effect 3 did poorly on Wii U! It couldn’t have been because Wii U owners had to pay 60 bucks for one game while owners of other systems could get it & the first two as a trilogy pack for the same amount! /s

I know these are rumors but still. I hope a lot of these are wrong.
