Online Service’s Free Virtual Console Games Expire After One Month

Nintendo’s website describing the benefits of their paid online service seem intentionally vague. The description for the ‘Monthly Game Download‘ references subscribers being able to download a Virtual Console game ‘for free for a month’. Some read this to mean the game would be only be available to download free for a month, but others thought it meant the game would delete itself from your system after the month was up. However, a tweet from Wired’s Chris Koeler seems to clear it up. According to him, a Nintendo representative said the latter is true. This means that the free game would only actually be playable for the month it was on offer, those wanting to continue the game being forced to buy it.

      1. You usually get 2 good games from PS Plus each month. And regardless if you think they are trash, some people are enjoying a couple of them.

And even if 1 out of 5 free games is good, guess what, you still get to keep them past a month.

Even Xbox gold is better than this Non-sense Nintendo program.

Journey & Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell are NOT trash! Maybe not your cup of tea but they are definitely not trash if you look at them objectively.

  1. Even though it expires it’s still a nice little perk I guess. Online fictions will be awesome though. Hopefully the same will go for n64 titles.

    1. Completely agree this is horrible. This is the thing I don’t understand with Nintendo they have two major companies that basically laid out the framework for Wt works and they mess it up still. It makes me think of Nintendo as sort of a blind old man lol

    2. @NintendoKev on 360 yes but on Xbox One you rent them for as long as you’re an Xbox Live Gold Member, same applies to Playstation Plus you want to keep playing these so called free games people keep calling them then you have to buy a Plus subscription.

Regardless this programme here is just stupid. Fingers crossed they realise this in the near future because even though it doesn’t bother me it is a deal breaker for other people.

  2. We will have to wait and see how much the fee will even cost. Before that I can not say whether this is ok or not.
Who knows, it might be cheaper.

  3. I had to read that twice because I couldn’t believe the stupidness I just read. Once again Sony and Microsoft will be laughing at Nintendo’s sorry attempt at (paid) online services. Virtual consoles games have LITTLE worth as they are, but it’s too much for Nintendo to give decades old games for “free” while Sony is showers its customers with games.

      1. Good grief, I don’t know the relationship with you two but please…
Don’t act like a baby towards someone opinion, esp. this one.

You can disagree with some of his statements but seriously ggrezz comment
isn’t even close to trolling, more his thoughts about this whole thing and finding
humor at how ridiculous it is when compared to other paid services.

Let me ask you…be honest with me, are you really content with what Nintendo has done with this
free game for a month deal?

To me, this to me bothers me on a whole new level.

People have the right to complain and this…
this makes me wonder why the hell this was a good idea.

It’s actually reminding me of when Nintendo first did wifi back
then before improving it, with the 3DS and WiiU and such.

This is the first time they’re doing a paid online service but still…
In this modern time of age when Sony and Microsoft have been doing
        this for over 10 years…

This free rent a game a month deal to paid subscribers is really disappointing
in my honest opinion. Why not keep the game for those who are subbed? I’m hopeful
they’ll expand the free game service (they most likely will) but…this is not a good sign.

If a large negative reaction were to happen to catch Nintendo’s attention,
I believe now is the right time or some further explanation is needed for this.

  4. Not really a great thing. The whole idea of having people constantly rebuy older game’s is very shady in my opinion. If you paid for a VC game once, you should be able to get it again for free. There’s no “value” on virtual games because there’s no real lack of them to go around.

    It’s shady as fokk.

    1. Maybe transferring will finally be easy and free when Switch 2 comes out. I can’t foresee them doing another drastic change beyond this hybrid concept.

      1. Switch 2? You have high hopes buddy.

If Switch fails – I’m not saying it will but I don’t like the early signs – Nintendo will be pure handheld… or pure software maker. But probably pure handheld.

    2. I still don’t understand that. You can still play the VC games on the console you bought them on.
That you cannot play an old game on a newer console is just normal for any game, besides regular backwards compatibility.

Besides, bringing VC to another console costs development time as well (and no, something like that is not done in 5 minutes).

  5. It feels like Nintendo is trying everything they can to make the Switch fail. No launch games (Zelda is a port), payed online (yet no online games), a pathetic reward system, Wii U 1.2 graphics (matters for 3rd party), no Western 3rd party support (graphics?), no new IP, only 2 future AAA games announced (Mario and Splatoon, but Splatoon will be unplayable because payed online).

    1. I believe that Nintendo said only certain games will require the payed subscription to play online. Seeing as online is a basic requirement for Splatoon, It seems unlikely that the subscription would be required for it.

  6. Unless the online subscription is $10 CAD/year it’s not even remotely worth it to get. I’ll stick with ps plus and xbox gold. I really hope they hammer out better details with their online services.

  7. Omega Kalas Ridley X3 (Greatness Awaits at Nintendo Switch & Sony PlayStation 4! Come join us in the Light of Darkness!!)

We still don’t know the full details of the paid service but we will when we can start the system up at our home on March 3rd & we can look through that shit right on the console. We’re gonna look like real assholes if it turns out we get one NES or SNES game a month with online play while also getting two other free games that we can keep as long as we keep the service active. lol And there is always a chance it could change later if enough of us voice our displeasure with it if this is all we get. Knowing Nintendo, it’s possible they will NOT change it later even if a majority of us are not pleased with the current incarnation. I mean, Miiverse still has that shitty, terrible update that limits every thing! But I digress as I’ve stayed on this subject long enough.

  8. I hope the first game of the month is Bubble Bobble for NES because that would be really fun with online multiplayer for about a month. Then, I hope the second month gives us Bust-a-Move aka Puzzle Bobble because that would be even more fun for online multiplayer. It would kind of be like the Splatfest model where there is something to look forward to every month but it would be with retro Nintendo games that you can play online for the first time officially, let’s just hope the netcode will be excellent. Anyone else have any other predictions of NES/SNES games that could have great potential for online play? Besides Turtles in Time obviously.

    1. Omega Kalas Ridley X3 (Greatness Awaits at Nintendo Switch & Sony PlayStation 4! Come join us in the Light of Darkness!!)

Personally, I’m hoping for Duck Hunt as the first NES game with online. As for SNES, Super Mario Kart. I’ll gladly buy both afterwards.

        1. Omega Kalas Ridley X3 (Greatness Awaits at Nintendo Switch & Sony PlayStation 4! Come join us in the Light of Darkness!!)

No, as another shooter. They had an arcade version that allowed for two people to play the game & blast them damn ducks.

  9. Unless the price you pay is dirt cheap, it won’t work, and I can see them using this to leverage Mother 3 if that rumour becomes true.

    Not looking good…

  10. Why are people so p***ed off about this? if it bothers you that much you can always download an Emulator to play them on.

I know personally I buy a new system to play NEW games not old games that I’ve probably played a million times already.
