Reggie Says That The Switch Won’t Have The NES Classic’s Supply Issues

Reggie Fils-Aime recently spoke to Wired about making sure that the Nintendo Switch has enough supply to meet demand, something that the NES Classic failed to do. He said that “what we’ve said publicly is that there will be 2 million units that will be shipped worldwide for the launch, essentially through month one. I know, because I read the boards and I read the comments, that there is concern about supply. From what I’ve read, the concern seems to stem from the lack of ability to buy NES Classic. So what I would say is this: Two million for essentially the first month is a huge number, especially when you look and see that this is not peak seasonality. This is essentially the first three weeks of March. Our focus is making sure that the consumer who wants to buy a Nintendo Switch can buy a Nintendo Switch. That’s how we build our supply chain, that’s how we think through the amount of product that’s available.”

He continued, saying that “what happened with NES Classic is that was a situation where the global demand was well in excess of anything we had anticipated, and that’s what created shortages. The good news, at least for consumers in the Americas, is we’re going to continue to make the NES Classic available. With the ongoing level of supply, the ongoing demand is going to be met. We know the concern.”

    1. Pre-ordered yesterday and canceled today.
Nearly $400 for switch and one game when tax get included. That type of paper isn’t in my budget ATM. Especially for a system with one must-play game on release that isn’t exclusive…I could have probably flipped it for 500 on eBay, but after eBay takes their percentage and then my money back…and possible fraud with the purchaser…I’d only make about $100 profit…dont think anyone would pay more that 500 for switch on eBay. If they do…I pity them. I ONLY preordered because it was available…I had buyers remorse when I preordered it cuz I don’t really want it…today was easier to make my decision..

I bought my Wii U for $260 in 2012. And saved a ton with all the early adopter benefits…this disaster that is Switch is aiming for a different fan base, one that I’m not in…so fuck them for now.

I’ll grab it on sale next year and hopefully a place that doesn’t charge tax…fuck the greedy-ass state. When more games are available and when they speak to the gamers gamer…not whoever the fuck appear on their reveal videos. Where are the neck beards and ugly manatees in those videos??? I hate to say it like that but those are REAL gamers…haha and no, I’m not a neck beard, but I’m not some hipster fuck like their vids show.

        1. How does it not make sense? I preordered it not fully convinced ONLY because it wasn’t sold out yet. Wanted to secure it. And then by the next day, I read all the details that weren’t in the presentation and changed my mind. I didn’t stick around after the presentation and didn’t read sites for info. All that I did the next day and came to the conclusion that this thing ain’t worth close to half a G just for one game and some memory or the pro controller.

Definitely not my loss, I got games I haven’t even opened yet. Zelda for the 3DS(don’t know the title off the top) and I still have a sealed skyward sword, and a sealed twilight princess HD…so I think I’m straight…next year when that shits on sale, yeah, I might…but my loss??? Nah…I’ll let some other chump instead see it as his win…

Only two games interested me. I don’t care for any Dynasty Warriors re-skinned or jrpgs with real-time combat…mk8 gave me fucking headaches online when I played it(unfair shit). So a dudes straight…Mario looked like whatever, wasn’t feeling the atmosphere, but two games ain’t worth spending half a G for…

          1. If you still have a sealed copy of Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess, two of the best Zelda games of all time, then why the fuck would you give a rats ass about the BotW? If you dont care about the new Mario or MK8, then why did you preorder the Switch to begin with?

Yea, no doubt your better off without the system… But even so, it was a dumb move to cancel your pre-order. IF the Switch becomes popular and sales out, you could have made some decent change off your Switch preorder… Or even the system itself. The orginal Wii’s were selling for anywhere betwee 800-1,500 dollars when they sold out….. Try to get a preorder now, and i bet you cant. At least they are all sold out where i live….

            1. Backlog and life shit prevent me from playing those games. I already played twilight princess when it released on wii. And skyward sword I’m likely grabbing digital on sale to keep my copy sealed (not to sell). Like I did with Kirby for wii, I have it sealed and never played it, then Wii U had it for $12 and I copped that digital.

As for the switch, I’m not that type of dude to prey on my fellow gamers just to make a “decent” profit. I’m not an impetuous dude, but this was an impetuous move; i jumped on the preorder ONLY because it wasn’t sold out yet…I don’t regret cancelling it.
Like I said, let some other gamer (chunp, because I don’t ever pay release price) get his hands on something they want, me, I didn’t really want it. So it’s not my loss…and if “my” system went to some scalper, more power to them.

There’s making profit and then there’s making BIG profit…flipping it on eBay doesn’t net the latter so I wouldn’t bother…plus I don’t fuck fellow gamers. We’re all in it together..to get the most for our buck.

I might cancel my preorder in the next 47 days if I hear any more news I don’t like. They’ve already got 2 strikes.

              2. Well thats fine if you feel that way. I see things just a bit different. While I do hate scalpers, i generally dislike the ones who purchase multiple copies of the same product. Nothing good comes from someone purchasing 50 copies of a Special Edition just to sell them at triple the price. That kills me. But if you just bought one product, and then decide you do not want that product anymore, IMO its perfectly fine to try and sell it for more than what you paid for it. In fact you would be stupid not to. I sold my original Wii for $850! So when more became available three months down the road, I practically got a free Wii system plus $500.00 on top. Did i screw my fellow gamers? Not really, since I sold them a system that was not available anywhere else. They got to play their Wii before many people and paid a premium for it… Now if i had bought 50 Wii’s that would be different.. lol

If the Switch becomes highly sought after and sells out I will likely do the same thing over.

                1. Two of my friends were reselling Wiis back in the day, too lol One somehow got some machine that told him when Wiis were goin to arrive at certain Toys R Us stores. I have no idea how he got that.

      1. Welcome to adulthood. I feel ya on that. I had some cash saved up from trading in all my Wii U shit. Paid for half the console and a full game.
        (Also, state taxes suck)

        1. That’s right dude!

I’ve sold shit on eBay before, video games and I’ve always taken reasonable amounts of money for the games I sold. All in the best condition and me as the only owner. I don’t buy used but I hardly ever pay release price…never bought a system for release price, maybe my wii…on the second wave release of them, but taxes weren’t so fucking brutal back then.

Nearly half a video game just in taxes for the switch…it’s like…I know taxes do what they do, but this shit is out of fucking hand in some states.

It’s inevitable—the price-cut, I’m in no rush to play it. But if you managed to get a preorder and keep it…I know it’s a mild-sweet victory of sorts…cuz you have one secured, but your bank account ain’t looking to good because of it…unless someone is rich…I’m not there yet…ha someday I will be..

I know what you mean, selling the Wii U and stuff just to afford this thing…me…I don’t sell my older systems or good games…so it’s more taxing on me as opposed to those who sell their stuff every gen so they don’t take that big hit.

  1. Well, at least now I don’t feel quite as bad about missing out on preordering. I was going to preorder the Switch (today) that has the pink and blue Joy Cons. Gamestop already sold out, and so did Best Buy. So I had to forget it and wait until launch. Good news about the NES Mini as well.

      1. I preordered on Amazon because they don’t charge you anything until your preorder item ships, and you have up until something like the day before release to cancel. So for no financial obligation, it seemed obvious to grab a preorder to make sure I can get one on launch day if I still want to, while still having the freedom to see how things are shaping up over the next several weeks to decide whether or not to cancel the preorder.

        1. looking at my bank statement right now, and considering my past pre order experience i can tell you. nobody charges you till your order is processed. considering this is a pre order for an item that comes out in February, id say you got about 40 days or so before you see a charge. all i gotta do is put about 80 bucks away every week until then and have enough money for everything. even as a barely working adult, its not that hard.

      2. Hey, that’s you in your icon, yes?

I hate to be that guy but you look like a stereotypical gamer. You are the the type that I would hold in high regard because you are of my people. I’m not out of shape and not really unattractive but hey man, people like you I would definitely choose to be around. Everyone likes to make fun of the stereotype of gamers yet you guys who fit the mold are solely responsible for how healthy and how far gaming has come. I truly admire the stereotypical gamer, because of you guys, I have enjoyed many years as a gamer myself.

But I have to ask you, good dude. Does it not bother you when game companies make these shitty videos about their product and the people (actors) used are nowhere near in resemblance to who their actual fucking fan base is??? Come on, man, I know it has to strike a nerve.

They show these dickheads and idiotic looking broads yet they are NOT what you see on YouTube GAMER channels…Nintendo is the biggest offender of this shit…

Hey man, stay up man, I got love for the stereotypical gamer, I really do. You guys don’t ever get any credit for keeping this pass time afloat, especially in the eras of no internet.

          1. Nah collecter…I was talking bout my man Joe. I was being serious though.
This other idiot who made the Jabba comment didn’t understand what I wrote…I was actually praising the dudes that look like “jabba” they have been gamers since the beginning, when gamers were shunned for it. They deserve respect because the stereotype is their lifestyle obviously, but that’s not always their fault.

I think it’s time we give them their props, they’ve kept gaming alive for us “normal” looking dudes by them being that reliable variable that gets overlooked or made fun-of…only older dudes will understand what I’m getting at. All of a sudden it’s the EMO looking dickheads who are viewed as “gamers” and since their appearance is more socially acceptable than the “neck beard” it’s a complete injustice to the “neck beards” who’ve been here since day one…

If any dude out there reading what I’m typing and you are a neckbeard (I know that shit sounds wrong) you’re alright in my book…and even though I’m not a neckbeard, I’d hang out with ya…dudes or dudettes who fit the traditional fat gamer…just to show that I do appreciate that gaming was kept alive because of people like them.

      1. Omega Kalas Ridley X3 (Greatness Awaits at Nintendo Switch & Sony PlayStation 4! Come join us in the Light of Darkness!!)

You need to let the restroom thing go already. Restrooms were prime places where people get molested or raped all the time even well before the talk of letting transgenders use the restroom of the gender they know they are. The rate it happens at is not going to rise or fall now. Countries that have allowed transgenders into the restroom of their choosing haven’t had any issues with people pretending to be transgender & raping/molesting people yet. In fact, rapists & child molesters just do it without so much as a second thought.

But I digress. This isn’t a discussion for a gaming blog so I’ll say no more on the subject. Unless there is some other reason, aside from the restroom thing, that’s attracting your ire.

  2. I’m not gonna buy it at launch. So I’m gonna wait in may and April just in case I have enough money over to get a Nintendo switch console. I’m still not interest in that new Zelda game.

        1. And a game. And an SD card… you’re going to be $550 in no time. Plus you can’t even buy current games. But on the plus side, you can buy Mario Kart 8 again! And an old Skyrim game for new release prices! And you can get the new Mario… in a year when the rest of us are getting it bundled for free by retailers on Black Friday…

… I’m sorry. This not being negative thing isn’t going well for me. Listen. Save your money. Buy the Switch at Christmas when retailers are bundling games with it for free… or not. But I do have your best interest in mind!!

          1. Aonuma just reconfirmed that BotW will have the same frame rate on Switch and Wii U. If you own a Wii U, there’s no reason to get the Switch at launch at all. In fact, there’s no reason to get one until Mario Odyssey comes out

            1. *sigh* not gonna lie… I was kinda waiting for the epic reason Zelda will be amazingly better on Switch… but I really am starting to believe it’s the exact same game. Thanks for letting me know. I’m a hardcore Zelda fan, and I’m glad to know my gameplay experience won’t suffer due to my being too cheap to just throw money at Nintendo for no reason like I used to.

              1. Considering the file size difference, it’s not going to be “the exact same game.”
So what happened to that “positivity” you talked about?

TWO DAYS since the direct, more info has been release, and people are acting like doomsday. e_e

          2. Dude Nintendo switch is 300$ dude. I will get it in no time. Not at launch like anyone else. But I’m still aware about how much is tax. So I’m just gonna get the console itself in the summer. No games for it.

          3. I would totally wait if Zelda wasn’t a launch title. I have $450+ saved up for Switch and I’ll probably have another $100 in a couple months, so I’m going to get it at launch. Plus I think I’d get really in to Splatoon 2. =P Your opinion totally makes sense though. ^^

          4. I feel your pain, and agree. Wait for the holidays or hell, wait even longer.. I was so unimpressed with the presentation i nearly turned it off. Nintendo is going after the casual market once again, and it will be thier doom no doubt. Nintendo had yet another chance to focus in on the core market, yet didnt. They could have focused on the core and if the Switch sold 35 million units it would have been considered a success. It would have gotten Nintendo’s foot back in the door, and with their next console that competes against the PS5 they would have had some muscle backing them up. Now, its either casual or bust. They took one hell of a gamble that I do not think will pay off. Even Nintendo fans are doubtful, how do you think the rest of the market feels? lol

Even after saying all that I’m still getting the system day one. lol . My reasoning for doing so? I just said fuck it. I put $100 down on the Switch and paid for BotW in full. So when the system releases in March all i’ll have to do is cough up $200 and I get to go home and play Zelda. lol… It will give me the illusion of only paying $200 if I black out today from my memory bank.. And the last two days for that matter.

            1. Despite the conversation we had, I’m sorry you were let down by that presentation. I was prepared for some of that stuff but even I was let down…mainly by the price. $300 is way too expensive for me and the online services only being done through iOS and Android devices is a big let down since I’m a Windows Mobile user. I did love that BotW and Mario trailer though and I thought the HD Rumble was really interesting. If you think about it 1, 2 Switch is kind of a weird form of VR.

  3. Of course it won’t have the NES mini supply issues- It’ll have the supply issues the wii did and the new nintendo 3ds xl do.

    1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

      ||Unfortunately for you, it’s the opposite since they know who their loyalists are and who are not…||

        1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

          ||I know far more about Nintendo than 96% of you in here, my logic is undeniable…||

    2. Omega Kalas Ridley X3 (Greatness Awaits at Nintendo Switch & Sony PlayStation 4! Come join us in the Light of Darkness!!)

Or laugh with him. Do you not watch Nintendo’s directs & events where they are being just a cooky, crazy, or just plain out old weird!?

  4. i love Nintendo, and pre-ordered the switch but lets not be fooled here, Nintendo is the worse company for creating hype thru short supply to create demand. Honestly tho i don’t blame them, it totally works.

  5. Isn’t that what he said about amiibo and then proceeded to completely screw up waves 2-4 of the Smash line?

Sorry Reggie- in my view, your record is against you. That’s why I spent 3 hours sitting in a parking lot waiting to preorder Switch because I wasn’t taking any chances.

        1. And what is the difference between the two? games. The wiiu did not launch with a title this big, nor had so many games ready to be developed. With 80 games outside of the ones announced, sales won’t die down.

          Now sit down. You’re done.

  6. It’s Nintendo they’ve always have and will have problem with launch because they under delivery to make sure to build that sold out launch like always. Hell I still can’t get a nes classic unless it’s a third party at $180. They will never keep up with demand, if they wanted that they would of learned from the wii. It’s part of their business plan to look better on the sales and them selling out at launch makes the price on the black market sky rocket so people want it more. I’m 36 I’ve dealt with them since I was a ki, I know what their doing and even though I want Zelda, I know I’m going to have to wait because I didn’t get to buy it at launch because they undersold themselves again on purpose.

  7. “what happened with NES Classic is that was a situation where the global demand was well in excess of anything we had anticipated” just invalidated his own statement.

  8. Dessutom gamla NES och SNES-spel. Hade det varit Switch-spel man fick testa under en begränsad period hade det känts vettigt

    1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

      ||Precis, eller åtminstone GCN och N64 spel under ett år gentemot 1 månad, enligt mig kommer priset vara det mest avgörande eftersom det borde vara cirka 50% av det Sonyanerna eller Xbotarna tar…||

  10. tfw still no NES Classics 2 months later

There’s quite obviously going to be supply issues if they’re limiting pre-orders. You’ll be hard pressed to find a place still accepting them.

  11. Omega Kalas Ridley X3 (Greatness Awaits at Nintendo Switch & Sony PlayStation 4! Come join us in the Light of Darkness!!)

Does he really expect many of us to actually believe this bullshit PR talk!? s/ Yeah! There totally won’t be stock issues with how shitty the preorders are! /s They better be making more consoles for more preorders when the initial preorders run out. And there better be some being made that won’t be for preorders! In other words, there better be plenty of Switchs to go around on launch day because 2m just to fit the preorders alone is bullshit!
