Eiji Aonuma: “There Could Be The Possibility Of Another Zelda On Nintendo Switch”

The Legend Of Zelda series producer, Eiji Aonuma, spoke to IGN recently and made a comment that suggests Nintendo Switch owners could be in for another Zelda title to join Zelda: Breath Of the Wild. In an interview with IGN he stated:

“I haven’t been able to fully use all of the new features of the system. There could be the possibility of another Zelda on Nintendo Switch”.

Aonuma expanded on this by saying:

“I think the core element of Zelda gameplay kind of stays the same. There’s the main character development as well as characters you meet along the way, and then you learn new things as the character develops,” he said. “With that said I think we could keep all that, and then I do wonder how we can expand from here with that in mind.”

With Zelda: Breath Of The Wild’s release for Switch and Wii U just a few weeks away, could Nintendo already have another title in the series lined up?

    1. Thread Rezin is the best band ever

Ive read 30 comments and not one person brought up the fact that….now nintendo focusing one on system means, less games? I thought they merged buildings. Portable games us multiple zelda games of there own and the console gaves us one! There better be another zelda on the switch

      1. I really hope so. Doesn’t look like it though. But for mee it really feels like they’d be holding back a lot. I believe there must have been some titles they moved from WiiU to the Switch from which we (maybe) didn’t saw anything yet (like they moved Pikmin 3 from Wii to WiiU).

      2. They can’t do magic though. 3DS development is much less taxing than HD development. Their 3DS-only teams won’t be able to make HD games as fast and consistently as before.

    1. What makes you think it will be a twilight princess 2. And there’s nothing confirmed yet. Your just being silly. I wouldn’t mind getting another zelda in the style of albw. And if they did it wouldn’t take them nearly as long as botw took them to make.
But even if they did a tp 2 it wouldn’t take them as long as botw. They could do what they did with oot. One of the reasons it took so long was because they built it from the ground up physics engine and all. So they could just build around tgat like they did with oot and reuse the engine like they did with the few zeldas after oot.
      Just a thought.

    2. I think it’s pretty obvious that realistic graphics don’t suit the Zelda series very well at all.

IMO Twilight Princess is the closest Zelda should get to realism, and it’s not very close at all. Even then, it’s still aged considerably worse than, say, Wind Waker, which came out 4 years earlier.

  1. I can’t pick any favorite Zelda really, every one has its own charm. But I would love a new Link Between Worlds before the 3DS fades out and I can definitely see a Skyward Sword remaster coming to the Switch, with the advanced motion controls it features.

  2. Of course there will be, because this Zelda is for the Wii U. If the Switch isn’t a bomb, of course there’ll be another one on the Switch… or maybe they’ll announce another one and then intentionally delay it for there next system.

  3. That’s what I’ve already assumed, unless Nintendo is done with supporting consoles for more than 4 years at a time.

  4. Skyward Sword HD with added elements….or it’ll be towards the end of the Switch into a new console years from now, per usual.

    1. last weekend, I had once again sessions of Mario 3D World and got kinda sad that there’s neither a comparable game available for WiiU nor anything like this coming to the Switch. So when I’m telling my girlfriend that I’m buying the Switch, she’s asking if there’s something to play cooperativley coming there and I can just say ‘not that I know of’ as the next Mario will be a ‘regular’ one. And at that point I told her how cool Four Swords was and how great a successor would fit right now especially tothe switch where you could coop-play it everywhere. Oh my god I’d even prefer this one over Mario’s Odyssey although I’m pretty hyped for that too.

    1. I have thinking about an idea that I would like to see….an “older Link”. Mature, aged and ruggee. Scars from battles past. Zelda as an ELDER Mage. Past that, I have no clue lol. It’d just be cool to see a Zelda like that where colors set the tone.

      1. Very interesting… maybe even something where (and I know it has been done in other sci-fi/fantasy stories/movies) where the older Zelda timeline affects the younger and you play as both… or Link the older does things that affect Link’s parents… something with a lot of depth, multi-dimensional and possibly with alternate endings…. Yeah, it’d be great to be on the story development team for Zelda

I feel they’d have to turn that game into more of a war game than a traditional Zelda. If they can tone down the action & stuff and overpowered attack moves, I wouldn’t mind Koei Tecmo handling it.

    1. Hopefully not. BotW is the first Zelda game that’s finally (FINALLY!!!!) able to step out of OoT’s very long shadow and Nintendo needs to build on that at all costs. OoT was great because it introduced the series (and gaming in general) to 3D action adventures. But many of it’s mechanics got so damn old and aged, they needed that BOTW-reset so hard and you can tell ppl think so too by the hype that game is generating. No, they need to build on that. OoT will come to the Virtual Console, maybe even the 3DS version, and that’s it. Twilight Princess was the fanservice for ppl asking for a OoT remake and now it’s time to move on. If That series isn’t worth telling more stories other than that 20 year old one, it’s not worth anything at all. And BOTW is proof it’s worth way more than we could’ve imagined. Let’s celebrate that by following that direction.

Jumping in Ocarina of Time would defeat the purpose of the Hover Boots, though. Many of those gaps you use to cross with the Hover Boots could have easily been crossed by running, then sprinting, then leaping across the gap. They’d have to really change the entire make over of the temples to make them bigger to where you can’t easily jump over certain gaps. I doubt Nintendo would spend 3-5 years rebuilding Ocarina of Time from the ground up when that could be served making a brand new game.

Then there is the issue of the Hookshot itself.

        3. I understand what you want just like I would love to see a 3D version of A Link to the Past. But as I said, Nintendo struggled for over a decade with the long shadow, OoT casted. Every game from Wind Waker to Skyward Sword got immediately compared to OoT and ppl always asked why this and that isn’t more like OoT. Twilight princess was a bit of a fanservice to come after these requests and SS was the attempt to then create an even bigger distance to that game. But after it still followed OoT very strict game mechanic, it still didn’t manage to be it’s own game. BotW will finally get there and they won’t throw it away like that. You can still wish whatever you want, but I can guarantee you your demands won’t be heard.
It just would destroy the work Nintendo had to do with years of BotW’s development. And in the end, BotW isn’t like a complete different story after all. There are enough main elements of OoT in there to please OoT-fans, i believe.

  5. I’d like to see a Zelda game that involves a full-scale conflict. Many of the Zelda backstories mention wars that have occured, but none of them actually show one. I’m kinda thinking of Skyrim and how it lets you participate in the civil war.

    1. Ever since OoT came out ppl dream of stuff like that.
And sure, that would be cool, although I’d say this shoudln’t just apply to wars but to the world in general. I don’t want huge cities to feel like little towns. They managed to make Hyrule City feel quite urban in Twilight Princess and I’d love to see them apply this to the whole gaming world. Even the kinda aged Xenoblade Chronicles did an amazing job at making you feel like walking through a highly populated world.

Plus what I would also love to see is channging landscapes. I mean like something completely destroying Death mountain and changing the whole way the landscape looks like. Actions that trigger large-scale consequences. Gameworlds in general feel like a boardgame most of the time with a static layer on which characters and enemies interact with each other. But I’d love to see the board being ruined and rebuilt during the game.

      1. Overall I’m fairly satisfied with how Zelda games have been populated. Skyward Sword was pretty desolate, but that was the setting of the game. The world was meant to be unpopulated. Wind Waker was kind of similar, but again, setting. Twilight Princess was the only one I was really disappointed with. Like you said, Castle Town was done really well, but Kakariko village had only 3 people living in it if I remember correctly; and Zora’s Domain and Death Mountain had nothing about them that made them feel like proper villages. Ordon Village was the only other town.

As for the possibility of destructible worlds, I think we’re a long way off from that. We’ve had games with destructible environments, but nothing quite on the scale you’re talking. It would take quite a bit of work to make it happen. It would be cool though to finally get to a point where an open world game could display a large scale battle and have the environment be permanently effected it.

        1. Omega King Kalas Ridley X3 (Greatness Awaits at Nintendo Switch & Sony PlayStation 4! Come join us in the Light of Darkness!!)

For TP, they had an in story reason why Kakariko Village was so empty. One of the guys there explained how many villagers left the village for some reason & never came back.

        2. Omega King Kalas Ridley X3 (Greatness Awaits at Nintendo Switch & Sony PlayStation 4! Come join us in the Light of Darkness!!)

I was more concerned about the lack of enemies in the fields than the lack of people in certain towns. Of course, Kakariko was the only place that didn’t have a lot of people in spite of it’s size.

    2. Omega King Kalas Ridley X3 (Greatness Awaits at Nintendo Switch & Sony PlayStation 4! Come join us in the Light of Darkness!!)

If they tone down the over the top stuff, I think Koei Tecmo would be a great partner to work with with creating a series of Zelda games that take place during the wars we only hear of the aftermath of.

    1. I don’t think so. This will likely be similar to how the Wii got Twilight Princess ( a gamecube port ) and Skyward Sword ( a Wii-exclusive title ).

      1. and considering the Switch sells not so bad, it would totally make sense as BOTW is basically a WiiU game. No one knows how much potential got lost due to it being ported over to the switch. The whole jump from one architecture to another isn’t that easy like we saw on PS4’s Last Guardian which runs quite bad for a game with these aged visuals. A native Zelda game could really mean another huge leap from BOTW.

  6. Well seeing as how the Zelda releasing now was suppose to be for the wiiu they have to make a switch one as well even if it is towards the end of the console life cycle

    1. I wish. But basically, Phantom Hourglass was Wind Waker 2. But Nintendo ruined the overall experience (and everything it COULD HAVE been) by putting it on the DS. And if that wasn’t bad enough, those god-awful stylus controls finished it off. I’ve always wanted to see a major console sequel to Wind Waker. Maybe moreso than an Ocarina Of Time remaster.

  7. What the fucking do you mean “could?”

Like, you want to say that “we’re not sure, probably another zelda game”

WHO THE FUCK IS THIS GUY KIDDING. Of course there’d be a kazillion zelda games on the switch. What? You think we’re surprised? Holy shit Aonuma.

I got triggered by the word “could”

I mean, they don’t even have to announce this shit anymore. It’s like saying water is going to be wet.

      1. though I feel like it would be so awesome to see them making one main-spin off game like Majora’s Mask or Links Awakening again. Especially those two games were just masterpieces and just building on the BOTW engine would give them plenty of freedom to come up with something supercrazy.

        1. Majoras mask wasn’t a spin off. A spin off is like triforce heroes, or links crossbow training. MM was very good tho, and I wouldn’t mind another game with an enhanced BOTW engine.

    1. No, just NO.
This ain’t Assassin’s Creed. If Nintendo needs 5 years to develop a Zelda game, then we should give em that time. Look at how promising the results can be. Zelda OoT also took em 5 years to develop. Today that might seem way too long but today 80% of the games also feel the same. Nintendo often needs time outs to at least find some gameplay mechanic, that delivers a valid reason to create a new game. Just throwing out another open world Zelda just wouldn’t do it and just coming up with iterations of the same items and mechanics won’t do it as well. They put so much ressources and brainz into BOTW (at least I hope so) that if they had so many ideas for a successor, they would’ve just put em into BOTW instead of holding them back.
I just hope they got enough other titles in production, like an original new Metroid game. And there’s still Xenoblade and Mario to keep us occupied for a while.

  8. “the possibility of another Zelda on Nintendo Switch”
What does that sentence really mean? I respect Aonuma but this is one helluva worthless thing to say. It would be very unwise to say something like ‘There won’t come any further Zelda game to the Switch’ at this point and possibilities are just always there. There is the possibility that Nintendo will do a Mario’s Odyssey-Trilogy with DLC and paid microtransactions. Sure, it’s not big but hey, never say never. I just hate these kinds of statements as they are just driving fanboys nuts and are the root of all kinds of embarrassing rumors. During the WiiU era, after such statements the internet got flooded with Nintendo sheeple coming up with completely invented continuations of those one-liners claiming the WiiU will SKYROCKET (it’s my most hated word of the WiiU era because of that) now.

  10. I know this is a log shot but i’d love Zelda Ura to come out on the switch all the cut content restored unfreeze zora’s domain new tunics and temples i think it would breathe new life into a classic

  11. I wouldn’t be surprised, BOTW is the Wii U’s game. They did the same with TP by releasing it on the Wii alongside the GameCube, then giving the Wii its own Zelda title (SS) later

  12. Omega King Kalas Ridley X3 (Greatness Awaits at Nintendo Switch & Sony PlayStation 4! Come join us in the Light of Darkness!!)

Like another said, asking if there will be another Zelda is like asking if water is wet. Nice joke, though, saying it COULD happen, Aonuma!
