GameStop Randomly Canceling Some Nintendo Switch Pre-orders

US video game retailer GameStop has apparently started canceling some Nintendo Switch pre-orders and unfortunately some of these orders can not be reinstated. Reddit user wiiUowner had the following story to share about the order and others in the thread seem to be in a similar situation. The GameStop customer service agents couldn’t say why the orders were canceled, but they have lost their place in the queue.

“Just received an email from gamestop that my online pre order for switch and BOTW master edition was canceled, currently on hold trying to contact support. also called my card service, no reason it should have been from their end; no block and fully available funds.”

UPDATE: after being on hold and “disconnected” once i finally got through to a live person they could not see why it was canceled and cannot reinstate it as there is no longer stock allocated. i received my confirmation email at 6:32am CST for pre order of BOTW Master Edition and Switch grey configuration. I don’t think i will use Gamestop again, got burned by Best Buy before on the Majora’s Mask New 3DS too. I am probably more bummed about the Master Edition.

  1. This is why I did both in store and online pre order. I got burned the exact same way on amiibo pre orders. Gamestop/EBGames always over preorders, then cancels to match their stock. What a joke.

    1. This is why I say, people need to start going on gamestops Facebook and their twitter and start complaining about their practices as a company. They are particularly the reason why limited games like Xenoblade Chronicles and Skyward Sword are still so much. The basically sell used games instead of brand new games by shrink wrapping them themselves. A lot of them are unpaid and rude sales reps and don’t even know about games. I had 1 rep tell a dude the newest Batman game was the HD remake of the first and second batman that released on ps3. I had to tell the dude to get the ps4 one since that’s the one the guy was asking for. They offer you pennies for your games and they basically treat the gaming industry like shit.

      1. When you trade to gamestop you’re paying to not have to do the work and sell your games yourself. You can always sell on Craigslist, Amazon or Ebay if you want to put forth the effort.

        1. Craigslist and Amazon are no effort. I put on Amazon and just send it to them in a box with a pre shipped label they give you. Craigslist is putting it up and the person meets you for the cash. Simple. Stuff

          1. Still, most people are either reluctant to do it so they trade at gamestop. That or they want the money ASAP. It’s the same as a pawn shop. They provide the service of selling your item for you and they give you the cash up front for it. People just need to stop complaining about trade values.

I didn’t like what stores like gamestop were offering so I sell my games on ebay. If you have a good approval rating you can set your payment option to require instant payment with paypal.

            1. You only get trade credit though, and that’s an issue. Rather do it through Amazon or Craigslist. Amazon does credit as well, but the credit is to anything off Amazon and is basically like case in the end.

      2. Best buy, Amazon, and many more retaikers have canceled preorders before. You cant just call gamestop out only. Beside ordering in stire is always the best approach with gamestop, as thier online service can sometimes take too many preorders… It sucks but its an honest mistake, its not like gamestop is intentionally screwing people out of their preorders.

If Nintendo & others did better stock, canceling of preorders wouldn’t be an issue for Gamestop & Best Buy. Sure they should do better with keeping up with how much stock they have left in the system but it’s not entirely on them, either.

          1. That’s fine, if it happened to me I would feel the same way. But I get all my games almost exclusively from GameStop and I’ve never had a cancellation or any other problems for that matter. And I’m talking in a span of over 10 years. That’s a pretty good track record if you ask me. And the guys in the store have always been cool as hell to me. Trust me, I’m a huge critic.. An asshole even, and if and when I get screwed over I raise all kinds of hell and I make sure the entire internet hears about it. GameStop has never screwed me over, not once. I feel like most people hate GameStop from what they read, not what from what they actually experience. However there are better places to shop online than GameStop. If your not physically going into a GameStop I would recommend purchasing your game elsewhere.

            1. I do all my stuff at Amazon and get it for 50 bucks. It’s been pretty good, though, having anything ship from USPS is an issue for me. But that’s a different story.

    1. From what I understand, the SE Zelda was an online only deal. Any in-store preorders will not be honored. There was some issue with stores trying to sell the ME and then having to inform the costumer that their preorders were worthless… after the ME went out of stock…

  2. Sucks that it was the master edition. The Switch they’ll be able to order again easy enough, the master edition is gone forever.

Part of me hopes I don’t get an email or whatever saying mine was canceled. But another part can’t help but feel that if mine does get canceled, it’ll save me the trouble of doing it myself if the Switch gets a 3rd strike since I don’t think I’ll have the will to do it myself. I think I might be hitting that “Fuck it! I’ll get it anyway!” state of mind.

  3. Honest version:

Person: My order for the Nintendo Switch and BOTW were cancelled. Explain?

GameStop: We looked up your order. We’ll tell you we don’t know why it happened but we can also be logical about this; if your order was cancelled, only one of the four following possibilities occurred…

One: the orders received was more than what was in stock. Yes, I know you did it with us in the store, but we just do the order for you online…so it’s the same dumb shit and we don’t know why we have people come in just to do that. It wastes everyone’s time, really.

Two: it could have been a glitch in the system, in which case implies we can fix it to prevent it from happening again in the future. But we won’t. Because technology is unpredictable like that, you know?…I’m wrong? Ehhh, what do you know?…

Three: It’s possible we cancelled it even though you ordered a whole day before they ran out of stock. But that’s only because you didn’t order the 2 year warranty with your Switch. I mean, are we really going to cancel the orders of dopes that gave us $40.00+ more dollars for the warranty just because they ordered after the Switch and BOTW was out of stock? Come on now. You’d do the same dam thing. Don’t front “homie” ;D Just kiddin’ friend. Lighten up.

Four: Maybe you cancelled it. Ever think of that?

    Person: *hangs up*

  5. I rarely had problems with gamestop but good thing I cancelled mine from gamestop and reserved my pre-order as a pick-up at walmart which was on the 13th and it’s convenient for me since I work at walmart so come 3/3/17 I can either pick it up before or after work or maybe even on lunch which depends on if I work that day or not.

  6. This has never happened to me here in Ireland. The manager of the store where I live who I’ve known for many years is always very obliging to me so my sympathies go out to those affected by this, damn this must really suck for them I know how I would feel :(

  7. Man that’s bad.

Happened to me with preordering (in-store) an NES Classic at Target. Wife showed up with “reservation” receipt on release day, only to be told that there was a line and they were passing out tickets. She of course was number 12 in the line with only 11 tickets. GRRR!!!!!!

Now nobody seems to have the Classic. Did Nintendo stop making them or are the employees holding them for friends????

  8. And what’s with the limited edition game BS?

Why not do online ordering direct from Nintendo etc. and have a reservation period?

  9. Ah well. It’ll be best to wait. 1 game is not enough to warrant buying it yet.
Also you just know Nintendo with fabricate stock shortages for the first few months. Buy Zelda for Wii U and wait for a year or 2 to buy Switch.

  10. I worked for Electronics Boutique and, by extension, Gamestop, for six years. I will never give them another penny out of my pocket. They upsell, they don’t care about their employees and they certainly don’t care about the customer. I’d rather wait patiently to scoop a Switch up somewhere else some time in March. Great site btw!

  11. Has GameStop cancelled anyone’s in-store pre-orders yet? I pre-ordered the Switch and BotW Special Edition. I’m hoping that they don’t cancel my order without telling me.

When the Wii U came out, they messed up my in-store pre-order and gave my console to someone else. Thankfully, I always save my pre-order receipts.

  12. Forgive my ignorance, I don’t live in the USA, but GameStop seems to be pretty infamous and this doesn’t seem uncommon for them. Where they always this bad?

  13. This JUST happened to me. Gamestop for no reason canceled my SE Breath of the wild. Calling them was no help, I just got the run around. Never using them again.
