Video: Digital Foundry Goes Hands-On With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe And Splatoon 2

Those in-depth tech analysts over at Digital Foundry have gone hands-on with both Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 for the Nintendo Switch. As you would expect from a Digital Foundry article there’s plenty of discussion and analysis. You can check out their impressions of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which runs at 1080p and 60fps and Splatoon 2 which runs at 720p and 60fps, below.

  1. Splatoon 2 is currently a demo at this point, same goes with Zelda for Switch.
Both games aren’t running at the Switch’s full potential and I believe at launch both games will be at 1080p as Splatoon 2 isn’t really any different from the last installment as you notice they pretty much use the same models only added in new features, textures and lighting but the polygons are the same.

      1. Depends what mode you’re talking about. Undocked, the Switch has a decent amount of memory bandwidth to use, but when docked it’s shader performance goes up 2.5 times but it’s memory bandwidth goes up either 20% or not at all. So if bandwidth is “maxed out” in handheld mode, then GPU may be stuck scaling the resolution up a little bit or not at all. If the docked version of a game is 1080p and maxing out the bandwidth, than it’s only because the bandwidth is not being taxed in handheld mode.

Essentially, it’s impossible for it reach it’s full potential in both modes unless, for example, resolution stays the same when docked but shader quality increases.

        1. Actually, the Switch is still the same even outside the dock than inside the dock.
It’s just the Switch resolution is 720p on the go but thanks to Super Dynamic Resolution from Nvidia, the Switch is rendering in 1080p but out putting 1080p visuals on a 720p display. This is probably why the recent reports suggesting the Switch Screen being amazing might have something to do with that.

So really, it is possible to reach full potential as it’s the same system only with a 720p touch screen. This is why I believe it’s a Pascal Architecture built inside as that requires less energy than say the X1 chip inside the Nvidia Shield yet can perform close to PS4 performance. Why else do you think Nvidia decided to make an X1 Android Console instead of a Tablet? Heck, their recent Nvidia Shield Tablet still used the old K1 Chip.

  2. So are three new characters and revamped Battle Mode and the old item meta of past Mario Kart games all Deluxe has to offer? Unless there are new race tracks as well, I will likely skip it since I already bought all the DLC for 8 on Wii U. Unless there’s some kind of half-price discount for those who did go all-in…
