EA: Nintendo Has Listened To Third Parties “Since Beginning Of The Switch’s Development”

EA‘s Executive Vice President, Patrick Soderlund, took part in an interview with Famitsu last week, shortly after the Nintendo Switch event. In it, he talked about Nintendo’s new console and the relationship that Nintendo has with third-party companies.

“I only spoke about FIFA today, but our company’s structure lets us release all sorts of games for every platform, so we’ll go wherever the gamers go. I think Nintendo Switch will put Nintendo at the forefront of the game industry once again. Their approach is quite different from anything they’ve done in the past – they’ve listened to EA, Activision, and other companies since the beginning of the Switch’s development, so we’ve been involved throughout the whole process. They teamed up with us because they wanted to guarantee the console would be successful. Doing business with Nintendo is very important for us… We’d like to bring more and more games over for everyone.”

    1. They did the same with Wii U. Madden, FIFA, Mass Effect, Need for Speed were all on the Wii U at launch and during the launch year. But that didn’t last.

We’ll see what happens this time around.

      1. But the key part is that he felt Nintendo listened to EA Activision and other while making the machine so it hopefully be less of a pain in the ass to put games on the thing like it was for the Wii U

        1. Not to mention that the Wii U was hard to port to. The software was too different if I remember correctly. That’s why Yooka Laylee was delayed to the Switch, they couldn’t make it work on the Wii U.

          1. Actually it was the architecture.
It was just really weird with not enough memory.
They used some weak ass Power PC CPU.

It pisses me off how Nintendo refuses to talk specs.
They won’t say what sort of CPU or GPU usually.
But i do believe that the Wii U used a AMD GPU.. i could be wrong though.

I just remember developer having hell, and one of the reasons Sonic Boom was so buggy is because the game started development on the Cryengine and when the devs were told the game was going to Wii U.. shit hit the fan.

I don’t think the Switch will have those issues.. but we will see.

      2. Still they were there and no matter what ppl are saying, I played Mass Effect 3 on the WiiU as well as I played Need for Speed MWU which was generally a very good game and a polished port. Their games didn’t sell and thus they left. Ppl were always hating on EA. And while EA surely isn’t a company who’s there for the gamers but for profits sake, they did way more than many other companies back then. There’s no rule that a company has to bring their portfolio to a new console and if a console looks as strange as the WiiU did back then, it’s quite OK if one of the biggest publisher ports at least some key franchises for that.

So yeah, the Switch looks like it could be selling quite good, especially next XMas, when Zelda, Splatoon, MK8 and Mario will already be part of its library. Let’s see if things will be turned around this time.

        1. Not really, while EA did release games, they were half efforts. Did you forget how they release Mass Effect 3 on Wii U, while on other consoles they did the trilogy for the same price at same time? Do they really think it was a fair thing to do?

  1. Let’s be honest here people, this is not the wiiu over again. third parties did not talk this much and this positive about the wiiu. You can tell yourself that they did all you want, but it didn’t happen. And it’s not just EA and ubisoft, but a TON of other ones too.

    1. Just because you don’t remember, it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. One example: A full 13 minute video filled with a bunch of different 3rd-party developers praising and talking about the WiiU – yes, EA is among them too.

Now think about how many articles there must have been. This is just one of many examples.
The quote from this article is just PR-talk. It doesn’t really mean anything. It’s actions that actually mean something. We will have to wait and see if the Switch will end up in a different situation than the WiiU; right now, it’s too early to tell.

    2. We’ll see when the games come. 80 games in development doesn’t mean anything if they are all ports or shovelware. Let’s hope there are some gems in there, but this time they need to prove to us there are games coming and not just tell us they are. Not just say it’s all about the games when having none.

        1. I’ll find the article. It was built for WiiU and had a bunch of WiiU features… they removed them when the made it for switch since switch only has one screen. They didn’t want users to “have different experiences” so wiiu owners got fucked and Switch users get HD rumble added. Yeah, Nintendo has been keeping VERY quiet, for obvious reasons. Fortunatly, graphics depend on who is doing the comparing. Ive seen switch graphics that look better, and WiiU graphics that look better, so we might have to wait for release to see where things fall. but gameplay for WiiU Zelda took a hit. The game was fucking nearly ready to go, and all the talk of “delay” wasn’t to make the game better, it was to fuck U users over so they could co-develop for switch, removing wiiU features. So the delay was bullshit and a coverup so they could duel release and re-work the controls for one screen and HD rumble.

Few people know, Nintendo is trying to keep this dirty secret hidden, but huge Zelda fans who are buying it for WiiU have a right to know.

  2. EA’s sports franchises and Garden Warfare would be a good fit for Switch due to its portable nature and being able to connect with up to 8 other people via local WiFi

  3. It’s easier for me to believe this than Randy Pitchford. I know he tweeted Nintendo just stopping communication for some reason but this is coming from the man who promised a great Aliens game then said for a long time that it was actually good and that the reviews were wrong about it. As far as third party support for the Switch, I do hope to see more evidence of that. I’ve seen good signs of it so far but I’ll be way more convinced when I see Beyond Good and Evil 2 confirmed. And when more current gen game announcements include the Switch in their trailers.

  4. Even with this article I’ve still accepted the truth of what games to expect on Switch.

Imagine if the 3DS and PSVita had a baby. Now remove Sony’s tragic Vita support and add in the full support of Nintendo. Then sprinkle an occasional AAA third party game here and there at complete random that’s more likely to be Japanese than Western. This is what all evidence points to so far and even then its leagues better than what the Wii U got from third parties.

    1. That would actually make a great handheld. As long as its not a Wii U with spars releases, or Vita with its indie and mediocre rpg’s only, then im all for it.

  5. …and yet not one of them told Nintendo or could convince them to put the fucking headset jacks in their controllers.

…Yes, not porting ME4 to the Switch, Nintendo must be very, very important to EA this time ’round. Like no time before it. (Hmm. Didn’t they put ME3 on the Wii U?)

    Me3 on Wii U
    Me4 not on Switch

    I need noise…

      1. I understand what your saying. I also understand that Bioware have had plenty of time to port it over. If they wanted it on the Switch at launch then it would be. Maybe have to delay it a month or two? They would do it for Xbox or PS4. Unless it’s hard to work with the Switch from a developers perspective, which wouldn’t make sense for EA since they have been working with Nintendo since the beginning and FB3 is an in-house engine. I think too much talking going on and not enough action by EA.

These developers just need to take a deep breath and then tell the Switch owners the bad news, instead of just giving them false hope. It would be relaxing.

      2. ME4 and Switch are releasing at the same time, essentially. Switch has probably been in development longer than ME4, maybe the same amount.

ME4 not releasing on switch makes this statement from EA, and hope of 3rd party games seem a bit WiiU-ish. But hey, as long as everyone happy. I wouldn’t want ME4 on switch anyway. I want the DLC, the updates… everything Nintendo doesn’t get with 3rd party games. (If they actually get the game to begin with.)

  6. Everyone needs to take into account that the Wii U has received plenty of support in the past since its release.
Nintendo put no effort into marketing the product and made tons of unorthodox decisions that were counterproductive, which is why the console slowly began declining demand..

Reggie states that the Switch will not repeat the same mistakes as Wii U, but it is far too early to be judgmental as only time will tell for now.
We’ll just need to wait and see what happens beyond its release.
