Gearbox Says There’s No Plans To Support The Nintendo Switch For Now

Glixel recently conducted an interview with Gearbox Software CEO and President Randy Pitchford, where the site asked some questions about the Nintendo Switch and third-party support. Randy Pitchford had lengthy explanations for them, as you can see down below.

G: You’ve been in the news this past week about your Nintendo Switch comments on Twitter. What happened with you and Nintendo? Because it sounds like there was some initial enthusiasm on your part.

RP: I love Nintendo and I think the Switch is awesome. I can’t wait. I’ve been a Nintendo fan my entire life, and literally the first game my wife and I played together when we were teenagers was on the NES. One of the things I’ve struggled with Nintendo is I’ve always loved their portable experience, but I’ve always hated that the best Nintendo has to offer goes on their console. From the moment I had a Game Boy up through the most recent iterations of the DS, I’ve loved having that Nintendo portable with me that I can game with, with a really high quality game experience wherever I go. But I’ve hated that it’s always felt a little compromised compared to the big bets Nintendo would make on their console platform.

Well, now that’s one and the same. The very best that Nintendo has to offer as creators will exist simultaneously in console and portable versions, which I think is amazing and exciting. A bunch of people mentioned to me that I’ve gotten some attention for something. Sometimes, when I go to the bathroom, I’ll get on Twitter and I’ll just kind of look at what people are tweeting at me and I’ll sometimes respond to some of them.

Somebody asked me, “Hey, is there any chance of Borderlands coming to the Switch?” and I said “Probably not.” I don’t remember my exact words, but [I said] we were talking to them, but I think they have other priorities. And it’s not a slight, they’ve got to drive their business. Nintendo tends to be at their best when they’re giving us their best experiences with their properties. I think there might be some scenarios where if the Switch becomes a place where there’s a huge number of customers, and it doesn’t compromise the experience that we’re making – there could be a scenario where us or Take-Two and 2K decide to take the effort to make it happen. But we can’t really think about that right now. And Nintendo, I think wisely, can’t prioritize forcing that to happen. I think they’re better off. What it would take for them to guarantee that we exist on the Switch would be better spent by them doing the things they’re best at. It wasn’t meant as a slight, it’s just the reality of priorities.

G: Does that mean you felt like you weren’t able to get an arrangement that was mutually beneficial between both of you? Is that why the talks kind of petered out?

RP: Some of that depends on what game you’re talking about. If you’re talking about the big franchises we have that Take-Two has been publishing for us, a lot of that business-level stuff is out of my hands. When we commit to Take-Two to be a publisher, it becomes their mission to figure out what arrangements are made with various partners for how it reaches the world.

Nintendo, in my opinion… they’re more awesome toward third parties than I’ve ever experienced them, so I’m afraid anything I say here’s going to sound like a slight. But it’s still not enough of an engagement to force things to happen, that wouldn’t happen just naturally. If that makes sense.

G: It totally makes sense. Ever since the Super Nintendo days, it feels like third parties haven’t been a huge priority for Nintendo. They’re off doing their own thing.

RP: And, look it doesn’t matter. There’s probably a handful of people who would really love to have a great Borderlands experience that you can have on a screen about that size, that you can carry around with you. But most of the people who want the kind of big stuff that we’re doing are totally happy to do it on their television with their PlayStations and their Xboxes. And Nintendo’s not going to win by trying to take people away from that. They’re going to win by offering something that those guys can’t offer, which is exactly what they’re doing and should be doing. That’s where they should dedicate their resources. And I think they’re really smart for doing it, and it’s kind of what I want from them as a gamer.

I don’t know if I’d call it a mistake, but sometimes, I’ll let people in on a little point of view, and then somehow everything gets misconstrued as this, like, horrible competition, or this Game of Thrones scenario. It’s like Jesus, man, we’re all just trying to entertain the world and everybody’s just doing the best they can. Everybody tends to get along on the industry level, especially when we have means of collaborating. It bugs me that I can make a random reply to a random guy when, I’m just saying, “No, they have other priorities.” And they should. Anyone who’s smartly looking at it thinks that makes a lot of sense. But as a consequence of folks reading into that, somebody probably distracted some people who are probably pretty busy at Nintendo for a minute to think about this and wonder what I meant by it. We shouldn’t be spending our mind share on that. That’s what fucking politicians should be doing. Not game makers. We should be focused on what matters, which is creating good experiences for people.

    1. He’s trying to pretend like it’s his choice. I can all but guarantee you that it’s Nintendo that wants nothing to do with them. Borderlands has gotten stale anyways.

  1. Yeah, bullcrap on the screen part. If that was the case, Skyrim wouldn’t be on it, nor Zelda. Or even NBA or FIFA where the camera is zoomed out.

This whole thing smells of “covering our own ass.”

    1. well to be fair it is the 360 version of skyrim which according to rumors the handheld mode is more powerful than a 360 so you arnt compromising anything

        1. not really I thought it was the older version at least thats what i have heard from the internet but sorry i shoulnt trust what i hear from the internet

      1. You dont actually know that its the 360 version though…you’re just assuming that. A best Buy of Canada rep just told a game journalist that the skyrim coming to switch is the remastered version that just came to xbone and ps4. Also thats irrelevant to what this guy is saying! The screen isnt too small for “those kind of experiences” whether its the new skyrim or not. Plus if you want to play on your tv, YOU CAN. So whats your (also this guy’s) point?? Literally his answer is a convoluted mess of just trying to back pedal and make it seem like he wasnt knocking the switch. What he meant is “if there turns out to be an install base worth our time, we will put in the effort” …thats it. Thats all he had to say, but instead he danced around the issue to try and keep his boots out of the mud.

        1. I will retracted my statement about the 360 version. but what i think he was saying is that they would have to also shrink the graphics and their fore the game cant be played as it was meant to be played on a 720p screen where you cant see the details that are in the XBO/PS4. it would be a gimped version in a way

          1. Here’s the thing though, my friend. 720p on a 6.2 inch screen… is a HIGHER QUALITY RESOLUTION that 1080p on a 40 inch tv. Everyone is letting that go over their heads.

  2. It’s a great read. If you skipped to the comments, do yourself a favor and read through everything Pitchford has to say here.

    1. After what they did to Colonial Marines and Sega, anything he says matters very little.

Coming from anyone else, that would be rather reasonable.
Even though not really worth discussing, but Borderlands 2 Vita version said hello.

And as for their “big franchise”, I got bored of Borderlands somewhere middle of the second game (and no, it was not the Vita version).

  3. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

    ||They have never supported Nintendo anyway so they are not Nintendo fans, period…||

    1. Borderlands is a great franchise and unfortunately it’s the only franchise from Gearbox worth anything. All their other games have been disappointments.

  4. providing the most cutting edge gaming sytstem ever created and providing a natural evolution in CUTTING EDGE controls is NINTENDO DOING THERE OWN THING

NO ITS NINTENDO FOLLOWING THE NATURAL EVOLUTION OF GAMING VIA TECH shut up you pile of shite third party thye playstation model of bussines is ovgbewr 4 gens old and has a outdated pile of disgusting shit controller

gerarbox are tsaking like butt hurt fanboys

    1. Thats why 6 months ago 65 million people bought a xbox or ps4 , and 13 million bought a wii u wich has been on the market for a longer time lol. (1 year)

The Playstation model is over you say? Both xbox and Playstation use a better controller , unless you count the wii/wii u pro controller that you have to buy separately. (greedy bastards)

People just want a simple console , with simple controlls, WITH actuall third party and having things such a blu ray , good online system, full support for things such a twitch, netflix and so on and so on.

People easily own 40 amazing games every generation , I can’t say the same for my N64, WII, WII U combined.

Your the one living in the past dude, the numbers don’t lie. Perhaps you don’t care about the third party games but 65 million people do every generation.

        1. Nintendo used to own the industry , but they lost the market cause there stubborn japanese people. It all started when they had to pay sony a small amount on every disc they sell, for adding a disc player to nintendo consoles. The Snes had a amazing library of games , just like every playstation console after that.

      1. True. The fact is the video games industry simply isn’t all that innovative, and Nintendo is trying to provide innovations that nobody is asking for. That is the fatal flaw in their thinking. That is why they are considered gimmicks and not truly moving the industry forward.

        1. Who gives a flying fuck about that , the best experience is on your big ass tv screen with a normal controller and top notch graphics and game play. This stuff would have been fun when I was 6 year old trough about 18 year old , after that everybody got to busy to come together and play.

          1. Plenty of people give a flying fuck about it and really love hand held gaming… And it is a smart move to differentiate from the other two major consoles by offering an alternative experience. Just because you don’t care, does not mean you represent the entire market and certainly those people who want the best portable gaming experience possible and those people exist.

            1. Sure I get what you mean but it shouldnt be at the expence of the home console definitly if its costing loads of third party. 65 million people bought a ps4 or xbox for a reason vs the 13 million wii u owners that has been on the market longer aswell. I don’t have they luxury to be around loads of people that buy the switch , cause people got to old have children and such or just nog time for it. Back in the days it was fun playing mario kart together but that just ain’t happening anymore, they don’t offer much for the solo players these days. And again when I spend this much money I would like to play every possible game I like not just nintendo first party.

              1. I am of the same age and for me it is good actually. But that is your opinion so luckily, you do have those other consoles to play. And in time hopefully you get to play Mario Odyssey and those other games that you may want to.

Maybe because 65million people bought those other systems is exactly why Nintendo opted not to put out a similar system.

          2. I think it’s important to remember Nintendo’s roots in relation to Microsoft and Sony. Microsoft is a software company, Sony is an electronics company, but at its heart, Nintendo is still a toy company, and it shows in the hardware they release. Toys are not generally cutting edge or high tech, but rather based on neat little ideas.

    1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

      ||Because it’s an Xbot ally, Xbots are primitive and barbaric, they corrupt everything they touch…||

    1. You’re obviously new here, so I’ll try to be nice.
You had to log-in to say that. If you were going to go to the trouble, you should include WHY you feel justified to call a comment section, which has several very good comments “pathetic” instead of responding directly to the comment you disagreed with.

So instead of adding a pathetic comment in an attempt to sound important (or arrogant), maybe you could help us out by adding something constructive.

If you’re a troll, or it’s too much to ask for you not to make a hypocritical comment, you can write your complaint on a piece of paper, and place it in the complaint box on the fourth floor, next to the pool.

See, you made me add a pathetic comment. I hope you’re proud of yourself.

      1. 1) Actually I’ve been visiting and commenting on this site for the best part of three years.
        2) Why you would feel that whether you’re “nice” to me or not has any import on my life says a lot about your sense of ego.
        3) I didn’t have to log in to say that. As someone who uses WordPress to blog, I’m consistently logged in, no matter what blog I visit.
        4) Anyone with basic reading comprehension skills would be able to infer from my comment that I took contention with numerous comments on this page, not a particular one. I don’t give a flying f**k if there’s several “good” comments, that doesn’t change the fact that the majority of the comments on this page are pathetic to the extreme. Here’s an analogy: the USA is still a fucked up country at this point in time despite having many good people within it.
        5) I wasn’t attempting to sound “important”, “arrogant” or any other vague descriptor. I was merely passing comment on something that seemed stupendously obvious to me. Observation is perhaps something you’re not familiar with.
        6) If the post-truth age has taught me anything, it’s that trying to bring actual information or evidence to a discussion involving people with clearly limited levels of intelligence is an utterly futile exercise. I could quote the interview and elucidate on the interviewee’s rationale all I like, it wouldn’t change the view of fanatical morons.
        7) Again, your last line suggests a high degree of solipsism. Why on Earth would I care if I “made” you do anything? Might want to look into that.

        1. The list game! Fun! I love lists.

          1. You universally insulted us.
          2. A generalized, “better than thou” insult usually indicates a arrogant or narcissistic person. That’s fine. If that’s how you are, just own it, don’t make excuses. If it’s not what you meant to do, then say so. I did it this past week and simply apologized to the person who called me out on it and moved on.
          3. If you have been reading and posting 3 years, then you already knew how the comment section worked. Making your comment more pathetic than I originally thought. I wouldn’t have admired that bit if I were you, unless #2 applies, then you’re good!
          4. I didn’t care that you “made” me comment. Obviously I chose to. It was a bit of dry humor poking fun at the fact I was being hypocritical in writing a pointless comment in response to a pointless comment.
          5. If you’re so wise, In this post-truth age, I’m pretty sure you could have come up with something besides, “Your comments are pathetic” (but yours are not? Yes, you sound very humble)
          6. Anyone with basic writing skills could have been a little more constructive and less humorously hypocritical in their point an absolutely useless comment as an insult to the group.

Again, if you have been posting here 3 years, you would know: (List #2!)

          1. This comment section is far, far less pathetic than it used to be.
          2. We have been through an epic number of trolls, so pardon me if you looked like one but we’re actually trying to contribute.
          3. We are going to have pointless conversations from time to time, because frankly several of us treat this blog like its a social media channel instead of a blog, myself included.

If you were simply being snarky, then I am sorry, but you didn’t give us much to work with, and you didn’t look familiar, and I don’t hesitate to shoot first and ask questions later when we get a troll roaming into our camp.

          1. 1) In general, see point 6 of my previous comment.
            2) Learn to differentiate between terms such as “comment” and “commenter”.
            3) Stop treating a news blog like it’s some sort of safe place for you and your mates.
            4) Don’t assume that arrogance or any other characteristic precludes the merit/validity of an observation.
            5) Get your jollies some other way.

            1. 1. You do not talk about fight club.
              2. You do NOT talk about fight club.
              3. I was getting my jollies here first. :)

              1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

What in blazes is this guy going on about? *shrug* Must be some narcissistic thing.

                1. I jumped on him thinking he was a troll. Apparently he’s not?
He got as much of an apology as he’s gonna get outta me. Moving on! Haha

      2. 1) Actually I’ve been visiting and commenting on this site for the best part of three years.

        5) I wasn’t attempting to sound “important”, “arrogant” or any other vague descriptor. I was merely passing comment on something that seemed stupendously obvious to me. Observation is perhaps something you’re not familiar with.

  5. ” I think there might be some scenarios where if the Switch becomes a place where there’s a huge number of customers, and it doesn’t compromise the experience that we’re making.” I have to call bullshit Borderlands 2 is on the vita and it runs like shit.

In any case he’s just saying who knows?

  6. Screw you, Randy Pitchford. After your lies about Aliens and now this that stinks of lies, we don’t need your games. Stop talking out of your ass, Pitchford.

  7. Pingback: Nintendo Switch: Auch Gearbox wird das System nicht unterstützen

    1. Not in this case. They should be mad at Gearbox or more specifically Randy Pitchford. That guy is a flake, worse then even Reggie. RP should be fired and not allowed back into the industry. The guy should be in jail for the shit hes done.

  8. The only game I know from these guys that’s decent is borderlands. Didn’t even feel like completing the second one so I’m not really disappointed I wouldn’t have bought their games and I’m sure the Japanese wouldn’t either. That’s the main target for Nintendo right now anyways

  10. King Kalas X3 (Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4 only because Nintendo are DUMBFUCKS!!)

Who the hell is this guy & why should I give a damn!? Oh wait… It’s him. The hack that ruined Aliens: Colonial Marines. *waves him off even if he did have a few nice things to say*
