The European Nintendo Switch website has been updated to give you detailed information about the handheld, dock, Joy-Cons and more. It’s basically an overview of how the system works and the many features that the console has. Interestingly, it states that the system will only use USB 2.0 at launch but these will be updated to USB 3.0 for faster charging. There’s also information on how the Home Menu works. You can view it all here.
Launches with USB 2.0 support, but USB 3.0 support will be added in a future update.
Thanks to HeinsGuenter for the tip!
notice how it says microphones and headsets can be plugged into the jack… maybe the app manages voice chat in some other way (like setting global preferences, who knows?)
I think they will make it that you can use your smartphone if you would like. I think this is because there is no headphone jack in the joy-cons, so if your Switch is hooked to the TV, there isn’t a headphone jack with you on the couch. So the only way to voice chat would to sit right at the TV. So I think they are making it an option to fix this problem.
Because bluetooth does not exist…
well maybe you don’t want to by a Bluetooth. It seems that there might be a lot of options and it would be nice for Nintendo to be less vague about it
Thanks for this, becuase I was just about to call Nintendo “smart” for giving us a companion app, essentially, to handle voice/party chat, friend list, etc. etc.
But then…’Bluetooth DOES exist’…
I guess they couldn’t add EVERY thing to the system, lol.
My bet is the app is an optional method of voice chat.
If we’re to draw comparison to the PS4, that anything related to the PS4s “Party” menus are on the phone, while other functionality can be used alone.
I don’t really see why people in general seem to react to options as being forced into something. E.g. “why are they forcing me to play with one joycon” when cradle and pro exists, or now assuming the phone is the only way to do anything related to online.
But I digress,
what you said is pretty likely.
Also seems to me like using the phone app might save you some battery charge on the Switch itself.
What do you mean “the ports will be updated to USB 3.0 for faster charging”?
Updated how? With a hardware revision? LOL.
Must mean that it’s only a software restriction. Maybe the software (drivers and whatnot) wasn’t ready for when it was shipped
The site simply says “Launches with USB 2.0 support, but USB 3.0 support will be added in a future update.” I’ve added this quote at the bottom of the post for clarification :)
So that means for now its just 2.0 and then after the update with will use both?
Exactly. USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0.
guess theres no 2017 theme for MyNintendoNews
They’re all USB 3, but as Lazara said chances are the drivers weren’t ready or had them operating at USB 3 levels
32 gb. Great.
The sarcasm is strong….
You do realize that physical game cards are always better than disk? Also, just as fast if not faster than your typical hard drive? Christ, we’re also getting the use of microSD cards for storage, and those are always cheaper by the day
I know but still.
theres no but still DUALSHOCK GREAT
CARNT TAKE IT WITH ME GREAT
NO TOUCH SCREN GREAT
NO HYBRID GREAT
NBO CUTTING EDGE GYRO GREAT
LOL STORAGE WEARS
Wut? 🤔
Nintendo has said that the Switch will be compatible with SD cards that aren’t even on the market yet. They’ve built it to work with high storage cards.
Are you telling me that a 1 TB, or even a 512 GB SD card isn’t good enough for you?
It’s all about the added costs. Nintendo should have included a 512gb card.
I’d much rather have external HDD of up to 2tb which will be cheaper to buy than a 2tb micro SD Card.
On a portable unit??? Why would you want to lug around an external HD with the Switch? People are most likely already going to be carrying a battery charger with it, but that would only need to be connected once the internal battery has died. An external HD would always need to be connected.
Exactly that’s what I was talking about. But then I remembered the micro sd cards. lol I’m stupid
Simple, really. I just won’t be using the portable aspect of a home console. It’s just another gimmick from Nintendo, anyway. Besides, as I said before, an external HDD of up to 2tb is less expensive than a micro SD card of up to 2tb. Portable memory isn’t cheap if you want the best kind of memory cards.
Cartridges don’t require tons of information to be written onto the HD like we see with many disk-based games. You’re not going to see any Switch games nearly as large as Xbone or PS4 games.
Nintendo still better guarantee us that they will let us use external HDDs before March 3rd or I’ll continue to use my money on my PS4 that is actually more digital friendly & where I can actually upgrade at least the internal memory to 2tb for less than I’d pay for a 2tb micro SD card. And when they finally allow us to use HDDs with the Switch, I’ll buy it then. If they don’t ever do it, guess I’ll just forsake Switch for it’s entire lifespan like I did Wii U halfway through it’s lifespan. It’s gonna be hard but I’ll manage.
And yes. It might come as a shock to some of you but not everyone is gonna want to actually use the portable aspect of the Switch. Some of us might actually prefer to use our big screen television instead of that tiny ass screen on the Switch. Personally, I won’t be using the portable aspect. And even if I did, it wouldn’t be for big games like Zelda. Anyway, options. That’s what I want above all else. I want the option to either use micro SD cards or external hard drives, not one or the other.
For a system built with the prospect of the options to either play portable or play at home on a big screen, it’s downright stupid to remove the options of other things like using online features on the system itself or through a smartphone app or the option to choose between micro SD cards or external hard drives. AKA don’t make smart strides in one area just so you can do stupid shit in other areas.
They’re probably concerned about when people switch into tablet mode and lose data. I’m sure they’ll eventually figure it out. Probably gonna just give you a warning on the screen before you do that or something.
There doesn’t exist any micro SDXC cards that are 512 GB, the largest micro SDXC card you can get is 256 GB and costs about $170, if Nintendo had chosen to support standard SD cards they are available as 512 GB, there will soon be a 1 TB card available since you last fall could read about a prototype from Sandisk. It took two years since the release the 512 GB card until they showed a prototype on a 1 TB card.
It is like a standard technology so it is not like a huge effort from Nintendo’s part, it is a card reader that reads card formatted with exFat. There will probably be 2 TB micro SDXC cards in the future, in four-five years, but they will probably cost around $800, that is what a 2 TB SSD costs today.
Nintendo just killed their own download market…
What do you think Apple makes most their money on? Selling phones or selling apps on their phones in App store?
Not to mention that the 256gb card can add to the storage on the system…and according to the bomberman R downloads of 1.5 gb, thats a fucking lot of memory left over…in that case, I do see why people are complaining so much about it…specially when a site called wish.com sells them a fuck ton less…walmart is seeling the cards for 130 bucks…I got mine for 7 dollars.
selling*
Wish will sell you a SD card that are fake, it is 4, 8 or 16 GB cards that printed a 256 GB logotype on (you can get 2 TB cards too, amazing cause they have not been developed yet) and been formatted to show the size printed on the card, but it will soon corrupt your data.
If it is too good to be true, it probably is…
https://wish.pissedconsumer.com/counterfeit-sd-cards-at-wish-and-geek-20151209748383.html
If you pay less than under $150 for a micro SDXC card I would be really suspicious. I think you pay around $170 at Amazon today, but even they sell fake cards for about $15.
Can you send a link? If I plan on buying physical on all non VC games, I shouldn’t really need to get a card should I?
Yeah. Physical copies are fine with that storage. Digital will still be kind of a problem though. You’ll probably need to store data on multiple separate cards cause they don’t come in like 1TB like hard drives.
hmmmm, good point and did you rid of your picture?
sdcard you pesent twat
What about the blue port behind the console?
Why would they color it blue if it was just same port than front ports?
3.0
Yes, most likely.
Now that I read from the source, it seems that the back port is 3.0, but it is downgraded to 2.0 by it’s capabilities on launch.
Still waiting to hear about my wiiU external hard drive full of $$$ spent that I get no trade in value for. When their own data and charts say everyone year after year is going digital, Nintendo still gives us 32GB internal.
So I’ve just read on the site that wired LAN internet connections are possible on Switch? Am I reading that correctly?
You need to buy an accessory similar to Wii and Wii U.
That’s right, but you will need a USB-Ethernet adapter for it. Nintendo is offering one, but it’s quite expensive. Have a look at Amazon, you can already get them for less than 10 bucks.
Weird that they have no icon for the web browser.
Because there isn’t a web browser.
Alright! Finally the specs are finally out! And yes, it is a CUSTOM tegra processor!
This should hopefully shut up some haters and fanboys.
Also bluetooth. Interesting.~
And it can last for MORE than six hours as well. I’m hoping this means that future games will last longer than three!
This was news to absolutely no one. We knew it was a custom Tegra but what people were arguing over was whether or not its GPU was Maxwell-based or Pascal-based, though it ultimately doesn’t matter a whole lot.
Don’t read “custom” as “more powerful” either. We’ve long assumed that the A53 cores were removed since they’ll be used so little of the time. The X1 also has a bunch of hardware blocks that the Switch wouldn’t make use of so those can be gotten rid of. For example, there isn’t much reason for an ISP and no reason for the MIPI CSI-2 interface since there is no camera. The Switch does HDMI or DisplayPort over USB to the dock which then outputs HDMI so the HDMI block and whatever is labeled “Dual Display” can be removed. Not sure if the DisplayPort block can be removed though. If it’s worth it, the 4K 60fps encoder can be downgraded and it would be smart to keep the 4k display controller and decoder should future docks include HDMI 2.0 so it could support 4k Netflix. From what Digital Foundry observed, it looks like the Switch is bandwidth limited so it’s safe to say there is no eDRAM because that would have scaled up g-buffer bandwidth with the clock rate. And lastly, it could be manufactured on a 16nm FinFet+ process. All these things would shrink the chip and make it cheaper to manufacture.
Also it’ll only get anywhere near 6 hours on small loads like NES or SNES virtual console games or 1, 2 Switch. 2.5-30 will likely be the norm.
Right, well with those dimensions out I’ve now tested it and yes, without the Joycons attached this machine should be a nice snug fit in my pocket – and I’m a small guy. Just make sure you have a nice pair of jeans with deep pockets and you should be set to go!
Hi sickr, please update your article. Right now it is misleading. You are stating that the “System” has USB 2.0, while it is actually the “Dock” that has USB 2.0 and a new version with USB 3.0 will be available later.
They’re kind of just claiming they won’t have USB 3.0 drivers shipping with the Switch at launch for some reason. The ports themselves are likely USB 3.0. We’d be able to find out right away by checking if it has the extra contacts needed for USB 3.0.

This is from last September. 1 TB cards exist:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3122005/storage/boom-sandisk-just-dropped-the-worlds-largest-sd-card.html
Anyways, there is already 512GB. That is plenty fine for massive Switch games.
https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-512GB-Memory-SDSDXPA-512G-G46/dp/B00NP699ZI/ref=sr_1_2?tag=pcworld02-20&s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1474323663&sr=1-2&keywords=512gb+sdxc&refinements=p_n_feature_two_browse-bin%3a13203835011
The SD Cards are out there. It’s just that they’re expensive. But that’s the case with storage on every console.
Are you being deliberately obtuse? Those are SD cards, of the sort one would use in a digital camera. The Switch uses microSD cards, which commercially currently top at at 256GB, and that’s for US$110 – 120 minimum.
*ahem*

Not sure I’d trust a $60 512 memory card at this point in time,… but you definitely made your point! Lol
i felt the same way at first, but ive done some research on the site and most people say it’s reliable.
well then it’s one hell of a deal if that’s true! Might not be a bad idea to back it up every so often, which should be easy since it’s micro SD, which is compatible with everything.
That’s a fake, mate. it’s not even listed on Microdia’s website. You’re not going to get a 512GB microSD card for $70. A full-size SD card that’s 512GB is going to run you $200 minimum.
I wouldn’t trust that site in a million years.
I think the fact you have to send it back to replace the battery kinda sucks. I’ve pulled the batteries out of all my Nintendo hardware bits. But I guess that’s not a big surprise.
And Apple does the same thing. You want a new battery, Pay apple $70 bucks or so and they do it. – I prefer to do things myself, but the switch is really built like a Surface PC tablet, so I guess it is what it is. It should be sturdier that way I suppose.
Nintendo’s greed knows no bounds it seems. Last gen it was their pride fucking things up for them. I’m expecting to pay more to replace batteries than to buy a new game. :/
they should be ashamed of not telling us about all the 3DS ports in the works when we bought the wiiU versions. i feel like buying a Poochy amiibo just to set it on fire.
I wonder how long before Nintendo starts shipping out their own specially made micro SD Cards so they can wiggle more money from us.
Like the Vita???
Oh God, they wouldn’t. Would they? D; I don’t think they will, knock on wood.
If I’m right & Nintendo’s greed will be a constant this gen like their pride was a constant last gen, you better believe they’ll have their own special micro SD Cards at some point. ESPECIALLY if they don’t active the Switch’s ability to use external HDDs within the console’s first year out.
You’re getting a Switch on day 1. So you better hope not!! Lol.
That’s up to debate, actually. I’m getting one from GameStop so there is a 48 hour hold. If I let that run out, they’ll put it out for someone else to buy & I can get my money back. So Nintendo has 72 hours to rectify any mistakes that I can’t stand.
Well, you’re in a good spot then. You can make the choice then and no pressure! Do you still have your WiiU?
I got my broken one containing all of my save data & digital purchases & I got the refurbished one that I got to replace it. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way since I need two fucking gamepads for the wii u to wii u system transfer. So fucking stupid! *right eye twitch* Anyway, I’m prepared to take the refurbished one & all of my Wii U games in to Gamestop for in-store credit that I can use to lower the price on my Switch preorder at a moment’s notice if I like what I hear from either Nintendo or day 1 buyers by March 4th.
Sounds like a solid plan!
I triggered a fanboy with my negative opinion towards Nintendo, Jaded, further up when I stated how much they’ll probably greedily charge us. Amster-something or other. Just another little fanbitch to add to the list, I guess.
Anyway, yes. It’s a very solid plan. Either way, least the Wii U will accomplish one final good deed for me right before I put it out of MY fucking misery!
No wait. That’s the other article about having to change out the stupid battery.
I’m getting really hyped for ZeldaU BotW. I’m going to start playing through Twilight Princess to beef up my Wolf Amino, that I absolutely can’t wait to have as my companion as I play. I wonder if you can have the wolf join you while on a horse? It would be so fun to have a small army of animals helping you on your adventure. Fuck I’m excited. :) And I’m hoping the map still appears on the gamepad!
I literally just went through twilight princess for the same reason and now I am all done except for catching all the fish in the fishing hole and the cave of shadows. Cave of shadows is no fun lol I hope you have a shiek and zelda amiibo to heal with. I gotta borrow them from a friend.
I do! I don’t have many Amiibo, but I do have most Zelda and Link ones! :D
They’ll probably set up blood banks next & charge us for simply giving our blood away.
I thought they already had those. :P
You wouldn’t have to buy them though even if they did. If its a microSD card slot, then the microSD cards will work.

Ah I see why.l exactly.
The port is right there. Why not support it at launch?
Probably for some retarded reason like how they have the ability to use external HDDs with Switch locked: because something about the gimmick is probably gonna hold it back in some way.
So I guess the dock definitively doesn’t have a fan. I guess it’s either completely passively cooled or the fan is built in.
I just noticed you have to take the strap off the top to hit the sync buttons.
So it will be a physical upgrade to future hardware…?? Or that magical update will swap out them physical ports while everyone is asleep. Sad as hell to even see them speak of USB 2.0 at this time. What the hell is going with this overpriced paper weight…!.?
