Playtonic Announces Options For Yooka-Laylee Wii U Backers

As you are aware the Wii U version of Yooka-Laylee was sadly canceled due to unforeseen technical issues with the build.  There’s a Nintendo Switch version of the promising 3D platformer in the works, but we have yet to hear anything about when that specific version is going to be released. Thankfully, those who backed the game on Kickstarter have been given other options and they have been outlined today by the company:

  • Receive a PC version (plus the ToyBox Deluxe) in exchange – the default option for those who do not make a selection
  • Receive a code for a console version (PlayStation 4, Xbox One or Switch – Switch version to be distributed later)
  • Receive a physical copy of the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions
  • Receive a full refund

    1. People are free to be disappointed all they like, but the vitriol in the comments section on that update seems petty and childish. Yes they’re not planning on a physical release for Switch, but it’s not the end of the world. This isn’t Mighty No. 9 we’re dealing with, so maybe they can cool it down a peg.

        1. None planned. It’s possible down the line, but if you’re buying this for Switch anticipate a digital purchase.

        2. i guess at this point they can’t announce it yet just like it took them a long time to announce the physical releases for ps4 and xbox one. might also be an indication that the switch version is far from being released.

    2. The WiiU still got an installbase of 13 Million units. and a huge part of tis game’s backers were WiiU players. As not every WiiU owner will just upgrade to the Switch like that or likes to play on a PC it’s absolutely understandable that ppl are disappointed. They already paid for something they probably can’t take advantage of and in the case of this game it’s really a bummer.

      That being said I couldn’t be more happy that I have a prepaid Switch-title incoming for me, yaaaaahaaay!

      1. I mean, if someone doesn’t want to upgrade, they are getting a full refund. That way they can pick up the game when they get the chance, at least once they get a new console. I could understand some disappointment, but this is a really good deal. There are a lot of options.

  1. It should also be noted that anyone who wants to get the “Switch” version instead of the one they initially chose are free to do so.

          1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

            I want to bet you don’t get that stuff if you get a full refund. Hence why you won’t get any of that stuff til you get the game itself on the system you want. If so, that’s where they get ya! Want to keep the goodies you got for donating that money for the game, well you can’t have a refund.

  2. I must admit they handled this situation way better than Inafune. I’m just worried that people will eventually lose all faith in Kickstarter projects due to situations like this. Mighty Number 9 wasn’t just a bad game, it soiled the reputation of Kickstarter games.

  3. I guess I don’t understand why they didn’t release it on WiiU, then release it again, or at the same time on Switch… Unless WiiU was really that hard to develop for? In which case Nintendo fans shouldn’t have been calling 3rd party developers lazy.

    1. From my understanding the Wii U was hard to develop for and Nintendo has only been helping developers port games over to the Switch as of the last year because they see the Wii U as a lost cause. Also the Wii U is basically the only thing still on the market that doesn’t use Arm 64 bit or x86 64 bit processing which just makes it that much harder. Plus I’ve heard from friends that work on games for some indie companies that since they announced the Switch Nvidia has been giving out dev kits to port games over and been way more helpful then AMD since they’re dying to get their foot back in the console market. Obviously it wasn’t lazy on their part they just figured hard core Nintendo fans would get a Switch or have another means of playing the game.

      I recently picked up a Xbox One so I’ll be getting it for that or PC still can’t decide..

      1. Switch is using Arm64, different architecture than PS4 and X!… hopefully that doesn’t mean more trouble for 3rd parties… of course Nintendo’s console is different again. X.x with any luck, ARM 64 isn’t too far from the other two…

  4. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

    No physical release? Enjoy getting this game digitally on Switch with that terrible 32gb internal data storage. They could always buy a micro SD card that costs a lot more than an external HDD, though. Or they could buy one of those very cheap micro SD cards that probably won’t last nearly as long as the more high end ones will. Hopefully we’ll be able to use external HDDs by the time this game does hit Switch if a physical release doesn’t happen. If not, I’ll just get it for PS4 instead.
