Nintendo’s First-Ever Super Bowl Ad Features Nintendo Switch And The Legend of Zelda

For the first time ever, Nintendo will run an ad during the Super Bowl. The 30-second spot, which along with an extended 90-second version can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/nintendo, builds on the worldwide excitement for the new Nintendo Switch video game system and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game, both of which launch March 3. The ad also features a new song by Imagine Dragons called “Believer” that premiered worldwide Jan. 31.

The star of the ad, which is scheduled to run during the game’s fourth quarter on Feb. 5, is Nintendo Switch, which combines the power of a home console with the mobility of a hand-held video game system. People can play on their TVs at home, then grab Nintendo Switch and continue playing seamlessly wherever they go.

The ad also shows off The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which breaks conventions to become the next defining moment in the classic franchise. It offers the most immersive world that Nintendo has ever created and sends players on an adventure they will never forget.

“The most anticipated video game system and video game of the year will be seen on the biggest stage of the year,” said Nicolas Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Vice President of Marketing. “Nintendo Switch will change how, when and where people play games. It’s only fitting that we’re changing how, when and where we advertise those games.”

The soundtrack to Nintendo’s ad, “Believer” by Imagine Dragons, is available now on iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon mp3 and Spotify, and is part of an upcoming new album from the band. This is not the first collaboration between Nintendo and Imagine Dragons, whose members are longtime fans of the video game company and The Legend of Zelda franchise. At The Game Awards in 2014, the band closed the show by performing a medley of music from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask with veteran Nintendo composer Koji Kondo.

The extended cut of the ad demonstrates the versatility of Nintendo Switch by showcasing the system in a variety of locations where home video games are not traditionally played, from a classroom to a kitchen to a laundromat. It also shows a number of upcoming single- and multiplayer games for the system, and how Nintendo Switch introduces fun new ways to play.

The names and launch timing of Nintendo Switch games featured in the extended cut include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild(March 3), 1-2-Switch (March 3), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (April), ARMS (spring), Splatoon 2 (summer), Just Dance 2017 from Ubisoft (March 3) and Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers from Capcom (launch timing TBD). Nintendo Switch will be available at a suggested retail price of $299.99.

      1. You said it, Batman. I wanted to slap the shit out of Nintendo’s marketing team but now I could really kiss them. They’re making Zelda look so badass too!

    1. Holy rave reviews, Caped Crusader… I have to agree with you. Nintendo have ultimately scored a (Travis) Touchdown with their extended cut commercial, including the edited commercial featuring The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

          It’s a meme started by the Switch reveal trailer we got back in.. September? Or was it October? I can’t remember.

      1. He’s saying the Nintendo of old is finally about to be reborn after it fell on its face for the last decade. That the old and powerful Nintendo brand is going to come back and replace the casual, kiddy, dumbass-decision making brand that everyone makes fun of nowadays.

        Nintendo’s rise to former Glory.
        That’s what I heard anyway! :)

        1. Oh ok. As far as ads go yeah totally. Hardware as well feels so modern and sleek not like a childs toy. But I’ve felt that most of their games have still been very good, we just need more of them, and that seems to be exactly what we’re getting. So yeah, i agree.

          1. I was just helping translate. I’m still on my Switch Protest! I can’t let how they treated WiiU Zelda fans go unanswered!

            But the coming months will be interesting. I’m curious to know when all these games come out. WiiU sported some outstanding games at launch, but they took the better part of the wiiu’s life to release. If Switch can avoid that by giving Nintendo gamers something to play in between 1st party titles, It could work!

            And as much fun as they make getting together and playing via local looks… I live in the country, so it’s not happening unless there is a switch event, but maybe people in more populated areas will game that like? IDK. I don’t want to even predict at this time. I don’t think so, but IDK.

            I will predict that the N3DS has over a year left of 1st party titles! >;D

              1. Do you consider a game like Federation force a major game???
                I only ask so we K of how to judge spinoffs in future games. :]

              1. In the game, Link is holding a slate. The gamepad was supposed to mimic how Link used the tool (that’s still in game) they designed the game for the gamepad, to use it to its fullest and give WiiU a Zelda game ton remember. If what Nintendo is saying is true, they changed how you play the game to ditch WiiU functionality and control styles that made it unique.

                  1. I’ve exhausted myself bitching about it. Some fans don’t know, some don’t care, some are disappointed, but are migrating to switch anyway, and some like myself are boycotting switch for a year or two (for many reasons) and will just try to play and enjoy Zelda Coulda-been-played-on-a-PS4 edition.

            Shame on you & Jaded for not realizing he was quoting Vigo the Carpathian, Vigo the… damn it! What were the other titles again!? lol

                I’m part of the cult following of people that loved Ghostbusters 2 so it was easy for me to recognize it. So if you aren’t part of that following, I guess I can take back some of the shame I put on ya.

  1. OH SNAP!!! Nintendo is putting way more advertising muscle behind the Switch than the ever did with the Wii U and its ingenious. Choosing the biggest sporting event in the US the Super Bowl is the most perfect timing to introduce your new gaming system….especially when it’s a month away from launching knowing that over hundreds of millions of people will be watching. Like I said before it appears that Nintendo is changing for the better and I know airing a commercial during the Super Bowl is expensive but this is Nintendo taking chances to get the biggest gaming market North America to see what the Switch really is. Pokémon GO benefitted greatly from this type of advertisement let’s hope the Switch will too

      One during Wrestlemania would be nice since that’s a pretty big event, too. And unlike the Superbowl, it’s a big event internationally, as well.

  2. Now that the big three all have had Super Bowl commercials, I think it’s safe to say that PlayStation’s God of War Super Bowl commercial is my favorite and most memorable. Not that it did anything for that installment of the game franchise. lol

  3. That’s great. From my understanding, this is a big deal. If this and the 2 UK Switch Ads are any indication, Nintendo have at least learnt how to advertise, compared to Nintendo’s biggest issue with the Wii U. Kudos have to be given to Nintendo for this one, at the very least.

  4. Sorry Nintendo, that European overview trailer they uploaded was much beter. This focuses to much on the handheld part for a a device Nintendo is calling a home console. They didn’t even bother just copying the ending from Europe’s video. Wich is subtle, but works for showing that it switches to the tv. Now I’m just “what’s that thing it slides into?”

      1. I think he is right. The portability is a feature but this is a home console. Otherwise it would cannibalize 3DS, and we all know they are supposed to co-exist. It’s necessary that Nintendo make people understand that this is a hybrid console focused on the ‘home’ part. It lasts only 3 hours detached from the base, let’s not forget about it.
        It’s a home console, with portability. And the games announced shows it.

  5. Good song choice and editing. Good wanton advertise to the masses. Especially people who have done very little research or don’t know about it yet.

    Marketing didn’t fuck it up this time! Most impressive!

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

          Meh. Not much different from the countless tanks, jets, battleships, cannons, catapults, etc that have been destroyed in wars past. Doesn’t mean the armies that used them were any less dangerous. Which is why I hate hearing people bitch about “Another Death Star!? Waaaaah!” It’s called Star WARS! Effective weapons get rebuilt every single time they get destroyed in a war! Do they think they stopped using a catapult that destroyed walls just because the first one got destroyed!? Hell fucking no! It did it’s job so make a-fucking-nother one! *heavy breathing as right eye twitches insanely* Okay. Rant over. lol

    1. “good wanton” – Lol. WTF was my phone thinking. I’m really going to need to keep a better eye on what I post.
      **”Good way to advertise”

      1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

        Wanton is a very intellectual word but I don’t see what it has to do with way. lol

  6. I have to give it to Nintendo: I was overwhelming impressed when I saw the trailer ♡ (*´▽`*) ♡ Very well done, Nintendo. You got it PERFECT. That was waaaaay better than the Switch reveal trailer, and you should be damn proud of yourselves. That’s saying alot considering the disappointing news lately.

    Still haven’t convinced me to get the Switch though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ There’s more work to be done before that happens.

  7. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

    Awesome ad. It made me forget all about the bad news surrounding Switch… For only around 2 minutes, though. :/

    1. Not the kind of music I listen to either, but I think the point was the message was in sync to what Nintendo is trying to accomplish and tell it’s fans.
      Plus the editing was really well done.

      1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

        I love Imagine Dragons. But like any other kind of music, it’s not for everyone. lol

        1. This was the first I heard of them! :D Good song, I just never would have found them on my own. The only music I can’t stand, except for very, very rare occasion, is country. Just not my flavor and it makes my brain hurt. ;D

          1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

            I have quite a number of country songs I like but yeah, I’m not that big of a country music fan, either.

            1. Nobody’s perfect. :P Are you in the states? (US?) Are you a Nintendo exclusive gamer, or do you have other consoles? I’d like connect via a game system if you’re down! I’m not online gamine much, but maybe once in a while? If not, no worries, just thought I’d ask!

              1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

                Yes, no, and you already know the answer to me having other consoles. *points to name in case ya forgot* xD And neither am I, honestly. The only games I’ve ever actually played online for long periods of time was Mario Kart 8, Monster Hunter Tri/Ultimate, & …hm. I could-a sworn there was a third game. *shrug* Just a Nintonyan as Quadraxis would put it, though, so no Xbox One.

    2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

      Music is never terrible, unless the singer can’t carry a tune worth shit or the person using an instrument can’t get a rhythm going. I don’t care for gospel, for instance, but I would never call it terrible music.

  8. Nintendo has stepped up advertising quite a bit and got a Superbowl ad spot at that!

    I get the feeling that Switch will print money rather quickly.

  9. Damn. This commercial was badass. Everything about it was. They made Zelda badass. They made Mario Kart badass. They made Just Dance badass. FUCKING JUST DANCE
