Project Giant Robot Has Been Canceled

Nintendo has confirmed today that Shigeru Miyamoto’s pet project Project Giant Robot has been canceled. Alarm bells rang when the experimental Wii U game wasn’t mentioned in Nintendo’s latest earnings report. However, Nintendo did say previously that there wouldn’t be any other first party titles for the Wii U after The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo told Polygon it’s been cancelled “after considering our overall product and development strategy.”

  1. Good, because when they showcased it, it was beyond cringeworthy. Also, it was predictable, considering project guard (which looked far more interesting, became a tack on to Star Fox Zero.

  2. I actually completely forgot about that game. But perhaps it’s for the best. The game looked rather shallow

  4. it could be the predecessor to Arms in the way you use you body to knock out the opponent. they probably thought about how to turn Project Giant Robot into an esport and came out with Arms.

  5. Yeah, I wasn’t really thrilled about this one anyway.

    It looked more like a physics engine test than an actual project.
    It also didn’t help that they BARELY ever mentioned this project after they announced it. Even Scalebound (another game that was cancelled (not to mention a game I wish was NEVER cancelled) had a lot more going for it than this.

    Granted part of me actually WAS curious on what the final product would’ve looked like to see if it would raise interest, but now that it was cancelled that’s obviously not going to happen.

    1. Yooka-Laylee is a spiritual return of the already famous and loved Banjo-Kazooie series. This is/was an experimental new IP for a doomed system with a less-than-stellar line-up of games (with the top-tier games plague by their own share of disappointments). This game probably would’ve gotten the same baggage as Mighty No. 9, Star Fox Zero, Amiibo Festival, and Ultra Smash (have I missed any?).

      But from a glance, it could’ve been another god game like Doshin the Giant.

  6. There are plenty of other Nintendo IPs that deserve comebacks (mainly platformers), before anyone gives a crap about this game.

    I actually forgot this existed. So how long before Forma.8, RIVE, Action Henk, Hive Jump, and Kerbal Space Program get the ax too.

  7. This was almost an excuse to show something more at e3, to show that wiiu would be getting more games, and to show that Nintendo was really trying to use the gamepad functions. Just that.

  8. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

    Shame because a part of me was interested in it. Least it seems to be living on in some form thanks to ARMS which seems to be a spiritual successor, anyway.
