Hideo Kojima Shares His Thoughts On The Nintendo Switch

Despite the company’s problems, it’s always a big deal when Nintendo releases a new console. This means that practically all famous developers are asked for their opinions whenever it happens. In line with this, IGN asked Hideo Kojima for his thoughts on the upcoming Nintendo Switch. Interestingly, Kojima compared the console’s concept to a PS3 game he created several years ago. According to him, it represents a stepping stone towards a more open gaming industry. While you can read the full interview here, a few of his comments are below.

You might be familiar with the fact that for a previous game that I did, we had a specification that we called ‘Transfarring’ where you could take the saved data from the PS Vita and move it over to the PS3 and back and forth like that. I believe [Switch] is an extension of that idea. The fact you can play something at home and take it outside, this is the gamer’s dream. The Switch is an evolution of that.

For example, often when you buy a Blu-Ray disc, it’ll have a code on the inside for a digital version, so in the same respect you can watch it at home and then take it on the go on your tablet and smartphone. This is how movies and TV are moving, and this is how games should go.

I feel like cloud technology is what everything will eventually move to. It’s further behind right now than I think where people thought it would be at this point, but I think it will go there, and when the infrastructure is ready, you’ll be able to play everything, on every device, anywhere. The Switch is the predecessor to this step.

      1. He’s a troll (a.k.a. “Get a Grip”, “Bowler something”) who has been showing up on several Nintendo sites for ages to distill his limited capacity to understand the world out there.

    1. I don’t think he is referring to save data. At least not only. In the PS example he is, but I think after that he wants to make the point of being able to play all of your games where you want and how you want (probably by having the games themselves run on the cloud – at least that’s how I interpreted it).

  1. What Kojima says may sound strange for some, but its actually true that it’s sort of an extansion on what he did, an example on this is done by microsoft as well, you can play a games that is in their “play anywhere” range of games, on the Xbox ONE then play it on the PC and pick up from where you left of on the ONE, this is a direct link to what Kojima was talking about. Same goes for the Playstation 4 where you can stream your Playstation 4 games to your Vita or Sony phone/tablet making your Playstation 4 games sort of portable, still where depending on internet connection and speed. It’s a great ide and what the Switch is doing is like he said continuing on that ide of taking your game with you anywhere. Cloud gaming is not impressing anyone really at the moment, but given the time and when the infrastructure is in place it will be a totally diffrent story, but my guess is that it’s a long way of still. But as it is now we just have to get along with the Switch and other ides that might show up. I am sure that i forgot good exampels for this, but just my thoughts on it :)

  2. He really didn’t say much tho, I would rather hear if he was planning on making a game for the switch or thinking about it.

  3. why even bother trying to compete with consoles if it isnt going to be as powerful or have any of the games that are only on those systems? You will fail again nintendo!!!!! The 3ds is an amazing, immersive system that has so much potential… it is like virtual reality in your hands! Just need more games for a 20yr old to 40 yr old crowd, too many kids games or games that feel childish

  4. But give it time and i am sure we will see Sony try and fallow suit.
    Maybe even MS…
    Who knows.

And I hate sounding like a fanboy.
But this is a good example of Nintendo innovating and Sony and MS will likely come along and imitate.

What bugs me though, is how it was a bad idea when Vita came out and it was core games on the go.. but Nintendo does it and all the sudden it’s amazing?
    I’m lost.
I guess though, that it’s amazing cause it’s a console AND handheld in one.
And the closest Vita was to that was syncing up (poorly) with a PS4..

  5. Cloud gaming is bullshit! I don’t want to see a compressed videostream when I’m playing a game. And I don’t want 100 miliseconds of lag when pressing a button. And I don’t want to be unable to play games when camping. Or having to pay a monthly bill. Or being unable to lend my games or give them away or collect them. Or letting a company decide which games are available to me and which are not! “This game is not available in your country”, “This game has been removed from our service”, “Your account does not match the conditions to play this game”, “This game is currently unavailable”. Cloud gaming is a gamer’s nightmare!

  6. did his example come out before MH3/MH3U? Because this is exactly the concept of the MH game that came out for the 3ds & Wii U.
I hate to sound like I’m picking on this guy but it sounds like he’s trying to almost claim credit for the Switch itself, which is funny considering Nintendo was probably in the works of something along the lines of the Switch when the Wii U launched(like how Apple is already working on iPhone-whatever when the new phone is released).
Also… I guess to be even more fair… isn’t this sort of what they did with the Super Gameboy? Take the gameboy game out and put it into a device that’ll let you play the game on the TV(granted it was just the gameboy version, nothing too great) and when you had to leave you could save, put it back in the gameboy, then take it with you on the go?
