Retro Studios May Have Just Hinted That They Are Working On Metroid Prime Again

Retro Studios have been quiet for ages now, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze releasing almost two years ago. However, they may have just hinted what their next project will be. When asked by one of IGN’s founders about their next game, Retro replied with a picture of some prime steak. It could merely be a coincidence, but maybe this is a reference to their acclaimed Metroid Prime series. What do you think Retro is working on? Tell us below.

        1. Nintendo is going to make another Metroid game. Its inevitable. And since the Prime series was the best selling in recent history, its only logical that a sequel would be in the making.

      1. That would be hilarious and our favourite “sweedish” roleplayer will be over the moon another masterpiece (federation force is coming!)

    1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

Maybe it’s also time to keep Tanabe from it, too. For that matter, they need to kick the fucker away from Paper Mario, too.

  2. Man this is a tough one for me. Metroid is my favourite Nintendo franchise and as bad as I want to see another metroid game from Retro I would rather see Nintendo let them loose on an original ip. So this might be good news for fans but you gotta wonder about the guys and gals working at retro. They’re probably dying to have some creative freedom and create something new. Instead they’re stifled, limited and restricted to working on a franchise that they’re probably sick of working on. Tropical freeze was incredible but I would hardly count that as a break either. So it pains me to say it but I’d rather wait a bit longer and get something original from arguably nintendos most talented developers.

    1. It’s very rare that developers get to work on a game of their choosing. It’s their job, not their free time hobby. They need to give the fans what WE want, not what THEY want. Do you realize how many developers would love the opportunity to work on a Metroid game?

Besides, what developers want to work on and what fans want from them are hardly, if ever the same. Nintendo has put out some stinkers lately because they haven’t been listening to fans. Instead they have been creating what they think we want.

      1. I get what you’re saying, you bring up some valid points but I can’t agree. Sure it’s become their job but I guarantee those developers entered the industry out of pure love for what they do. I’m willing to bet that some of the best games and franchises ever created have come from developers doing what they love as a hobby not under some corporate pressure. When has Nintendo ever given us what we want? Metroid primes very existence is an example of Nintendo not listening to fans. Nobody was asking for a first person metroid game, and to make matters worse how many were furious when they handed a beloved franchise to an unknown developer? Obviously looking back it was the right call, and that’s an example of a risk with a huge payoff. As a former employer myself I understand the importance of keeping morale high within a company culture. If I told my employees to shut up and do their job then nobody would’ve respected me or appreciated their work space. I wasn’t in an industry that depends and thrives on creativity and artful expression like game development. However, I know if you’re an artist the creative juices don’t flow when you’re stressed and unhappy. If they’re not enjoying themselves then ideas becomes stifled and they’ll begin to put out stinkers. Or like in many cases your talent will simply quit and start their own company. Many developers would love to work on metroid, no doubt, but now ask those developers after nearly 20 years of working on the same franchise if their enthusiasm levels are the same. Prime would not be the game it is without nintendos guidance and influence. I just want to see what those guys at retro are capable of with just a bit more freedom but still under the masterful guidance and care from Nintendo.

  3. Retro Studios, AND a picture of Samus all in the same post? Thank you for that morning dose of adrenaline.

Don’t toy with our emotions – it’s a dangerous game you’re playing with us, Josh.

  4. Next level are also a very talented bunch. I don’t think it’s fair to shit on them for what they did on federation force. That’s another example of a talented group of people basically doing what they’re told instead of having the creative freedom to show off what they’re capable of.

    1. Exactly. NLG does get some flak, but the brunt of it should go to Tanabe and Sakamoto- their decisions doomed FF from the start (and we still have not forgiven Sakamoto for Other M’s atrocities).

    2. As long a second they stay the hell away from The Mysterious Murasame Castle and a Japanese developed handles it, then I’m fine with that. Don’t want a game about feudal Japan riddled with American pop culture or failing to capture that Japanese feel.

  5. If this is true, then my hopes are restored. Retro has proven their worth with Metroid not once, not twice, but three and a half times (Primes 1-3 plus Hunters for the half). I would gladly let them take another 3 years for a Prime 4- they do Metroid better than Nintendo themselves at this point.

  6. By now there is so much talk about the Metroid franchise, that a new one would would probably sell itself because
even gamers who haven’t played a Metroid yet or only played the earlier games like Super Metroid should be curious about it by now.

That is also why I do believe that we are getting a new one for Switch. The big question is: When?

    1. other m was actually good just the so called fans were butt hurt samus spoke and it wasnt a shitty fps but third person.

      1. The problem wasn’t that Samus spoke; Fusion gave her a few lines near the end, as well as some walls of text throughout, and Zero Mission also provided a couple walls of text. The problem was that Other M butchered Samus’s personality, by turning the galaxy’s most revered badass into a whiny little bitch…that just happened to get PTSD from simply seeing Ridley despite soundly thrashing him a whopping five times before Other M.

Honestly, I would be perfectly fine with Retro developing a replacement for Other M, even if the only change they make is the much-needed fix to Samus’s portrayal. Retro Studios knows Metroid; Ninja Studios does not.

        1. i agree there i just prefer third person to fps ok the limits on the weapons did annoy me but the story wasn’t bad.

            1. first person shooters are lame and i have played prime all three but hated the fact it was first person other m was not so i prefer that one end of.

  7. Jokes on us folks. They’re propbably making “Cooking Mama Switch”.

    “Something Delicious”
(Likely not CM, but that’s my grain of salt)

  8. oh yea just what fans want nother prime entry. once again nintendo does not listen.
metroid is platformer not gd fps ,If we get nother prime ill rage so hard ..
I want true retro styled metroid done right on switch ,Not fps for love jesus christ ill boycott this so bad.

super metroid style with next gen graphics make it happen or do not bother retro

  9. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

I’d rather they work on a entirely new Metroid trilogy & move away from Metroid Prime since that trilogy’s namesake, called Dark Samus in 2 & 3, was killed, along with Phaaze which produced phazon which was the source of Metroid Prime’s power. Oh & please give us the ability to switch between 1st & 3rd person viewpoints! Hell! As long as I can play in 3rd person, go ahead with a Metroid Prime 4 for all I care!

Anyway, watch this just end up being a tease for a damn cooking game.

  10. Why are we getting excited over steak? Seriously. WTH? !! They know we’re hungry for a new game.

If this eventually leads to metroid, this would be one of the biggest tease ever.
