Nintendo Switch Commercial Didn’t Make It On TiVo’s Super Bowl Top Ten

Nintendo paid a huge amount of money to get a commercial at the Super Bowl yesterday, but it doesn’t seem to have got the attention that they would have liked. TiVo’s engagement rankings don’t even include data on the Switch commercial, the advertisement failing to break into their top ten engagement rankings. While this doesn’t mean it failed to reach a huge amount of people, it would have been nice to see more it getting a little more attention. Check out the rankings below.

    1. but to be honest. it wasn’t the most eye poping tv spot.. it looked like something you would just flip on tv and see. its not flashy or has a big budget, or funny

  1. Honestly, it didn’t deserve to make the top 10. The commercial was extremely short and didn’t do much to wow anyone. My parents certainly weren’t impressed and I already know that I’m going to wait until at least Christmas. It’s just another big missed opportunity from Nintendont

      1. It just felt slapped together and didn’t do anything to get people interested about the console. I suspect only Nintendo fans actually enjoyed it and would have gotten it anyway

            1. Cool. Your opinion may not change, but it does go into much more detail.

If a viewer was not a gamer or a Zelda fan, or an Imagine Dragons fan, the 30sec edit probably didn’t have the same punch Nintendo was hoping for. Anyone with any interest at all will hopefully run across the XL version on YouTube. Of course, YouTubers can’t help spread the word without getting a content ID match slapped at them with extreme prejudice. Of course then they make a negative video about Nintendo so the positive becomes a negative…

Anyway, side rant. Yeah, see what you think of the extended cut. I thought it was much better.

              1. I saw the extended one, and some of it felt like a wii commercial, when they showed off 1, 2, Switch and Arms, and showing kids playing with their parents and grandparents is exactly what has turned people off from so many nintendo ads since the wii. Zelda looked good, mario kart looked like mario kart, splatoon looked like splatoon, but nothing really amazing sadly in my opinion. I know that nintendo wants to appeal to all ages but that always bites them in the ass lol. Arms may actually be a good game (not sure yet since I haven’t played it) but I really think showing off anything like that was a bad move. Casual people are gonna see it and think “Oh look its wii sports boxing, that was fun but I’ll pass.” Just my opinion on it, trying to look at it from a casual perspective lol. Not trying to hate haha.

                1. I don’t particularly disagree with any point you’ve made… I actually agree. But the switch is what it is, and the extended version shows that. If it’s not what people want… then it won’t help. If it is, it will have explained it really well.

You know… one thing I saw…that if true would really kick ass… if say… you and two friends could play at your house, against some people in another state… that could be awesome… being able to create your own local groups/clans/teams, and playing with them locally against a team far away… that would be cool. I don’t know how it works, but it’s like having a LAN party against a LAN party in another part of the world. (Region free FTW)

Anyway… I think Nintendo is playing with fire. They will lite a bonfire, or burn down the rest of their reputation. They are going for the casual crowd, AND the gamer crowd… I don’t think they can do it. But I really want to be wrong.

Note: When I use the word “casual” I don’t mean it as an insult.

That’s always been a hurdle for online gaming: you can’t have a buddy join you online on the same console as they had to go home & get on theirs, if they even have the same console as you, in order to play online together with other people. If Nintendo is one of the first to leap over this hurdle, that could be a big boon to the Switch & even Nintendo this generation.

    1. They probably would have done well to have paid for a 60 sec ad instead of a 30 sec, but barring the shorter cut, it still reached a lot of people.

I’m sure it’s impact hit harder with gamers, as non-gamers or mobile only gamers may not have known what they were looking at. The extended version explains much better. But rest assured it was enough to get a message through to any gamer that was watching. Hardcore or casual or whatever I can safely call people who game casually.

      1. Just looking over at Reddit there’s quite a few stories of people at parties saying the others that were there said it looked cool when the ad came on.

      2. I still think the 30-sec ad was the right one to go with. It was straight and to the point, rather than spending 90 going over a bunch of things and diluting the message. The longer ad is great as supplementary material, but the shorter ad was definitely the one to put front and center.

  2. It’s true that the cutted one is really uninteresting, the extended one is much better. Missed chance.
I hope this doesn’t mean that the console will not be a success.
In Google Trend no interest from Japan and Italy, why so? Wasn’t supposed to be big in Japan?

I hope to not have bet on a dead horse.

    1. Japan is going crazy for it as we can see with preorders and the Super Bowl is mostly American anyway so spikes wouldn’t be as big elsewhere.

      1. Yes, hope everything will be fine then and that interest will spike everywhere, this is the only console I’m interested in from long time (15 years), don’t wanna see it sink.

  3. I mean it’s an alright commercial but it didn’t do anything special or be comedic/tell a story like some do to stand out. It felt like a regular commercial I would see any time on any channel

    1. Seriously, it’s odd that MNN would only report on lists the ad didn’t make. It’s almost as if they want to generate drama for the sake of site traffic.

Yeah. I heard they got their asses kicked for a good portion of the Superbowl til the Atlanta Falcons fucked up their lead. Their city, state, etc are not gonna let their team live this down for awhile.

He’s a good director, to be honest. It’s when he’s allowed to do more than simply direct that he becomes a nuisance since Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, The Rock (Nicholas Cage/Sean Connery movie,) and a few others were pretty great movies. If anything, we need to keep him away from anything we enjoyed as children like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Battleship, etc. Imagine if this guy got to make a movie for Clue!? I guarantee the killer would turn out to be a fucking alien even though the game has no such character in it! He’d probably throw explosions about, too.

Ooh, ooh! Please tell me they had a new fucking trailer for the new Pirates movie! *looks it up*
