Aonuma was in Europe a couple of weeks ago to promote Zelda: Breath Of The Wild at the various Nintendo Switch hands-on events that had been taking place. When it was France’s turn to check out the new console, Nintendo France asked fans to come up with questions, that they would relay to Eiji Aonuma. One of the questions, which was recently translated to English, addressed the game’s location in the Zelda timeline. Aonuma, however, doesn’t want to reveal that just yet. He said that “I’m not going to tell you where the game ends up in the Zelda timeline before you’ve had the chance to play, but if you watched the third trailer, then you heard about the voice that said Hyrule is a country that went through many battles against Ganon. I’d say this is a clue as to when the game takes place.”
Didn’t he stated that it’s after Ocarina of Time?
Why
well my name is disco the hedgehog and i’m the fastest guy in the galaxy besides i can save the world with my ability maybe
I went to the store today.
You did?
tomorrow.
I see
The fact that it’s after Ocarina of Time doesn’t confirm that it happens right after, but that it doesn’t happen before it. Remember OoT is like the catalyst of three different timelines with many games in them, Aonuma said this game is part of one of those (which was really obvious before he said anything, really) but we still don’t know where exactly it is.
Yeah but after Ocarina of Time follow 3 different timelines
He just said that the event happened after ocarina of time but he never said it happened right after, so it could be somewhere after oot.
I am pretty certain this is the fallen Hero from the very first Zelda games which would be just Epic if he was.
This is definitely the “Defeated Hero” timeline. As to where it is, I don’t know. It could before or after the first Zelda.
Well yes that’s what I think.
That could make sense, because didn’t he say that the first Zelda was kind-of open world in a way, and that technically, you can play the dungeons in any order? IDK. A prequel to the first Zelda could work.
Ah I see why exactly.
Lol once again talk of the neverending timeline that is just as confusing as the KH storyline lol
Researching these subjects makes all the difference. Of course these timelines are confusing if you don’t research it. If some people did more than just look at that timeline graph & actually read Hyrule Historia, it ties the timeline together nicely. Of course, it naturally leaves some holes in there, though, so it can leave room for future Zelda games to be squeezed in there between other games.
As for the Kingdom Hearts storyline, it’s not that confusing if you either play all of the games or research the events in each game if you don’t want to actually play them. And like I said with the Zelda timeline, they obviously leave holes in there in case they want to squeeze a future game or event between games.
The Zelda timeline is just something that they made to please the fans. It should have just been left like all the other games like final fantasy and the tales of series. Don’t see why they made a timeline for a series they never plan to finish their just going to keep adding games and sticking the games in somewhere in the “timeline”
I like the official timeline so I’m gonna follow it. If others don’t want to & want to continue making their own head canon timelines, that’s their choice.
That and, if I remember correctly, Hyrule Historia states people don’t have to follow Nintendo’s official timeline if they don’t want to, so it’s still left up to the gamers what they want to believe.
What if this is an alternate timeline where WW Ganon actually succeeded in restoring hyrule (draining the great sea) people wasn’t cool with it because…well he was the King of Evil?
This is also my theory, plus the official art work for certain creatures sort of clinched it for me. WW!Ganon wins timeline would be ‘new’ ground for them to work with without disrupting ‘established’ timelines.
this looks like its after windwalker or before.
If before, Wind Waker would have to be retconned in a very bad way since the entire game occurs because they explain in the prologue that the Hero never appears to stop Ganon, hence why the Goddesses flood Hyrule in the first place.
If the game eventually reveals when it takes place, that would be a very good reason to not tell us when after Ocarina that it occurs.
after Ocarina that it occurs since it would be a big spoiler for BotW’s story.*
I’m still convinced it is the first story in the “Hero is defeated” alt universe. If not first, still very definitely down that arc.
Can’t wait to see if I’m right or not.
I’m glad he’s staying silent about this, it will be fun to explore the game and theorize about it, even reading what other’s have to say. I honestly wouldn’t want a concrete answer until a year after release.

/////You will denigrate for insulting the mighty steed…////
||I’m not insulting, I’m spoiling events…||
Oh.
(You are wrong btw.)
I have to laugh at everybody who thinks this will take place in the Adult timeline, just because they saw Koroks and fake ass Rito (should be Fokka, but Nintendo only wants the new races anymore). Sorry, There were a grand total of 1 Ganon battles (No Ganon battle in WW, just Ganondorf, and yes, it’s different when it comes to this) and even if you decide to take 2 fights as “multiple battles”, Hyrule as seen in BotW was, is, and will always be flooded. It was done by the Gods and sealed by the wish on the Triforce. Hyrule is GONE in that timeline. It will NOT return. Ganon is permanently sealed with the Master Sword in his head. SORRY. It’s not the Adult timeline, so deal with it.
