Castlevania Netflix Show Based On Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse And It’s Super R Rated

Good news for Castlevania fans as we found out earlier this week that an animated series will be appearing on popular streaming service, Netflix. We now have further details about the animation and interestingly it is based upon Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Producer Adi Shankar has also reassured fans that it’s going to be violent stating that it’s an R rated production aimed firmly at an older audience, which sounds like good news.

“[The series is] going to be R-rated as f***,” Shankar said of the series’ level of violence, as many entries in Konami’s game series were rated M for mature due to blood and violence. Shankar’s discussion of the series’ more adult aims reconfirms a 2015 interview in which he said the show would be “America’s first animated series for adults.” At the time, Shankar, who has produced Dredd, The Grey, and more, said Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Young Justice were among the series inspiring the Castlevania series’ art design.

Speaking to whether the franchise is aimed at the franchise’s longtime fans or newcomers to the material, Shankar discussed his high hopes for the project, saying “this is going to be the best f*****g video game adaptation we’ve had to date.”

  1. I’m really looking forward to this. Netflix is hit or miss but when it’s a hit, it’s a darn good hit. Really interested in seeing Frederator’s version of an R rated cartoon series. Adventure Time’s subtle lore and story telling is amazingly deep. I have faith in their ability to produce a rich Castlevania story. Here’s hoping for a game tie in.

  2. “America’s first animated series for adults.”

Is he serious about this? There are plenty of adult animated series’ from America.

From the sound of this article alone, I don’t have much faith in this. It sounds like his goal is simply to have an R-rated show. Just because a show is for adults, it isn’t automatically mature and it certainly isn’t automatically good.

  3. “[The series is] going to be R-rated as f***,” Shankar said…’
Unsure if that phrasing is apropos or…well, he didn’t say it’s going to be ‘mature’.

“America’s first animated series for adults.”

‘Exclusively’ for adults? Even then, I didn’t think the Spawn animated series, The Maxx, Metalocalypse, Archer, etc. were non-American, live-action movies aimed @ a non-adult audience. & while Avatar: TLAB & TLo Korra, King of the Hill, Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, Batman: The Animated Series, etc. have plenty of kid-friendly elements, they still have enough ‘adult’ elements to also make them shows for adults.

Perhaps I’ve fallen prey to semantics & high expectations…

Hopefully, the Castlevania animated series is smart & @ least faithful to the source material, not simply gore porn &/or video game exploitation. But I hope against hope its art-style will embody Symphony of the Night’s & that there are plenty of Japanese-style elements (@ least a high-level of animation).

      1. I would make as few “WiiU” related comments as possible so as not to tempt fate. Pretty sure you don’t want what happened to WiiU to happen to switch.

  5. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

I can’t wait. Hopefully they will take after Devil May Cry & Hellsing Ultimate animes, too.

    1. There is, however what I think he meant was, rather than Bayonetta animated movie, which really could have been PG-13 with a few more edits, I suppose this will land squarely in “R” Territory.

I was somewhat disappointed with Bayonetta’s R-rated film, and would have had better expectations if they didn’t squeak by the R rating.

If you’re going to bother making your movie R, then make it fucking R. Which is what I think he is saying. :)

Or it could be overly promotional bullshyte.

      Hoping for a great series!
