The ever informative Squid Research lab has confirmed today that the long-awaited Splatoon 2 for the Nintendo Switch will have LAN based play and also the previously announced private battles. Splatoon 2 is due to come out on the Switch this summer.
“Previously, we’ve reported that Splatoon 2 will allow up to eight Nintendo Switch systems to connect via local wireless to play Private Battles. In addition to this, a new feature called LAN Play will enable players to connect eight docked systems using a wired LAN setup. This feature allows players to create local Private Battle tournaments without the need for an Internet connection.
If you’re willing to put in the work to set up LAN Play, you can also use the Private Battle Spectator View feature by hooking up two additional Nintendo Switch systems. Local wireless play is perfect for your regular gaming get-togethers, but LAN Play is where it’s at when you want to organize a serious tournament event with your fellow players.”
Thanks, Blueparadox
Now THIS is local multiplayer! (Looking at you, Halo 5)
That is cool and all, but what’s Callie’s role?
That’s pretty cool! I didn’t even know LAN connections for consoles were still a thing. eSports should definitely benefit from this.
LAN just means Local Area Network. It means the two systems can either communicate through your router or directly with each other.
I wait. Didn’t catch that it said “wired”. This is gonna need that adapter then.
I know. What I meant was “I didn’t know LAN multiplayer on consoles was still a thing”. I thought nowadays, all consoles used either the internet or a wireless connection for multiplayer.
Oh sorry. Yea, I haven’t seen LAN play in a game in years. It’s a shame because it should be a lot easier than online play.
LAN is the de-facto way to play a local game of POKKÉN Tournament for instance
Interesting. Didn’t know any Wii U games supported LAN multiplayer.
halo 5 is really shame..Splatoon new Ip ok didn’t had local multiplayer but had very good multiplayer online the splatoon 2 coming and is evolving with the local multiplayer.
All halo series had local multiplayer then halo 5 come and they stop local multiplayer.. evolved !!
I need more details on how to set this up!
A Team Deathmatch mode would be dope too.
and maybe a Hide and Seek mode! Something like having to hide from the Hunter.
Evolve did this. But the maps were huge and you played as a gigantic beast hunting humans.
Halo’s Juggernaut mode might be a better comparison than Evolve.
I need 7 friends with their own respective NS 😔
Will it have 1-player vs CPU battles, like Smash. For people who have no friends and a crappy internet connection.
Yes
Whats the point in this “LAN” play if you have to bring both the DOCK and the CONSOLE? Not sure if people would do that…. Or is is meant to be utilized in a more produced scene, like big tourney’s, eSports, PAX, and groups of demo kiosks??
I’m going to be gaming mostly online so it doesn’t affect me much. Don’t know much gamers that play on Nintendo around my block honestly which is unfortunate for me lol but sounds like a good feature for tourneys and stuff
Sounds cool but I’m waiting for details on local multiplayer on the TV. Is it actually split screen? Will it include bots?
To bad you can’t connect undocked switches to each other. That would be handier for most people I’d think. Why not allow us to just connect with basic USB-C cables for quicker stable local play? Or have one switch connect to the dock of a docked one so one can play on the TV, and the other can play on his switch.
Um….you can?
