The Nintendo Switch may only be a few weeks away from launch but Nintendo’s dedicated handheld the Nintendo 3DS doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. The Telegraph recently had the chance to chat to Shinya Takahashi, Director at Nintendo, General Manager of Entertainment Planning and Development and Yoshiaki Koizumi, Deputy General Manager of Entertainment Planning and Development, about the system and how they’re planning to support the popular handheld device while the Switch is available.
You’ve mentioned the 3DS there. Will you continue to support the dedicated handheld given Switch could potentially replace it?
Certainly I think 3DS from a price perspective is quite a bit lower, and it’s a system we’ve released a very large library for. So I think from that perspective it’s a very good system for kids to have as their first system. We still see a lot of potential for 3DS in that area. And with that in mind we’re thinking of games to release for 3DS not just in 2017, but in 2018 as well. And the hope there also is that kids playing on 3DS will also shift over to Switch at some point in the future.
“And the hope there also is that kids playing on 3DS will also shift over to Switch at some point in the future.”
Namely, mid-to-late 2018. I’m still calling it.
Closer to middle.
Right before holiday 2K18 seems perfect, plus slight support for 2 years after that. I figured up to holiday 2018 before this interview, it’s common sense business wise for video game systems. The Switch will only last 6 to 8 years, and continue to get 2 more years of support after that.
I think my chances of seeing a 3DS game release in 2018 is very high! Mwahaha!
The deal is for a “major” game ;)
That’s their hope. They need to create a new pocketable and cheap Switch.
Probably not before 2019. 149$ should be its target price, though they can do it eventually if they can shrink with nVidia that SoC.
It can do perfectly fine before a cheaper model with the right games. Kids can sometimes be very persuasive when they want something.
Cheaper and smaller would attract both kids and commuters.
Mike this isn’t a system for everyone. It just isn’t. Need to be shrinked to attract the other piece of the cake.
You’ll be surprised once Pokémon hits. Also, no console has ever been for everyone.
Nintendo 3DS is still survive on its last production this year. Yep. The 3DS is still going well with there huge libraries. Besides Nintendo Switch is almost close to be release.
if they want suggestions how about they re- release the four swords anniversary physically along with gundam the 3d battle, samurai warriors chronicle 2 & 3 physically the great ace attorney physically love plus physically the taiko drum 3ds game as tht game was alot of fun in japan. the toriko games it’s a quirky series that deserves some time in the spotlight and how about learning different language software for the 3ds/ the switch? they are on google play it shouldn’t be that hard to port some of those applications over to the systems.
and beyond the labyrinth is a good title on the 3ds but it’s a shame it wasn’t localized outside japan i got the game and really enjoy it
or better yet nintendo make a region free eshop yes they have to add a bit extra but people would save thousands on import charges and Nintendo would be stupid not to
For anyone thinking they will release a direct 3DS successor besides the Switch:
“And the hope there also is that kids playing on 3DS will also shift over to Switch at some point in the future.” Wouldn’t make much sense then.
Only a Switch mini still seems possible to me, but only in at least a few years.
Keyword being “also”. That, to me, sounds more like that they hope to get kids interested in the Switch via the 3DS.
Didn’t nintendo have a sci-fi shooting IP that had some kickass hunter with a cannon on her arm? What was the name? Meteoroid? Maroid? Metaroid?
I think you mean Metroid Geoid Soleloid
Shut up
Regie saaid wait a year for news on Metriod.
Given the huge 3DS Library and what looks to be a meager library for the Switch for at least 2-3 years…I would not count on many people switching over anytime soon.

}{ I see you english good two… }{
English you say?
“it’s a very good system for kids to have as their first system.” true it was my first system that got me seriously into gaming
I’l make a list 4 you
Those games should be put on 3ds
They’d better not make any more main series Pokemon games for the 3DS. Sun and Moon ran awfully and had a bunch of content cut out that was in generation 6. I don’t know about the New version, but the standard 3DS is no longer suitable for Pokemon. And with the touchscreen reduced to a barely functional map outside of battles, I think they’ll move it onto the Switch to get rid of that second screen for good. A sequel to Pokemon Sun and Moon on the Switch could be amazing if they gave us that missing content and updated the graphics (as well as fill in those numerous squares of empty map dotted around Alola).
Safe bet; the 4th gen remake is New 3DS exclusive, especially at $99 for a New 3DS, and discontinuing the 2DS along with the original 3DS & 3DS XL. At least I hope it’s exclusive to the New 3DS.
