The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U consoles is one of the largest, most engaging video games Nintendo has ever created. While the main game offers players an engrossing quest that will keep them entertained for hours, as well as the freedom to explore the vast Hyrule at their own pace, the game world provides a rich canvas that offers the opportunity for additional adventures. As a result, the first-ever downloadable content for the main-line Legend of Zelda series is in development.
Starting when the game launches on 3rd March, players will be able to purchase an Expansion Pass for £17.99, granting access to two new sets of downloadable content for the game when they become available later this year. Immediately upon pre-purchase or purchase of the Expansion Pass, three new treasure chests will appear in the game’s Great Plateau area. One of these treasure chests will contain a shirt with a Nintendo Switch logo which Link can wear during his adventure, exclusive to the Expansion Pass. The other two will deliver useful items. The first content pack is scheduled to launch this summer and will include the addition of a Cave of Trials challenge, a new hard mode and a new feature for the in-game map. The second content pack will launch in Holiday 2017, and adds new challenges that will let players enjoy a new dungeon and a new original story. The Expansion Pass will be available for both the Nintendo Switch and Wii U versions of the game and are identical. Content packs cannot be purchased individually.
“The world of Hyrule, which we created for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is so large and vibrant that we wanted to offer more for players to experience within it,” said Nintendo developer Eiji Aonuma, the long-time producer of the series. “With this new Expansion Pass, we hope that fans will play, explore and enjoy the game even more.”
Aonuma also created a brief video to share more details on the Expansion Pass, which is now available on YouTube.The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launches for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U consoles on March 3rd in stores and on Nintendo eShop.
Niceeee
OMG YES DLC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nintendo always handles DLC well. I have confidence BOTW will be no different.
Eh, not entirely. MK8 was a phenomenal way of doing it, but FE:A wasnt. Also, Smash isnt entirely the best way of doing it. The DLC alone is more expensive than the game itself. (Im talking about the full package, including all the Mii crap aswell.) At $20 though, it seems pretty fair for a DLC pass.
The only thing that bugs me is that theyre calling it an Expansion Pass. Just call it what we have grown to call it; a season pass.
Potato Potatoe
I wouldn’t say FE:A DLC was all bad, sure there was a good amount of it that was just the same map played in three different angles but stuff like Future Past and Scramble were very good, and this kind of mistake was fixed with Fates DLC so there is no need to worry.
>I dont care, will just buy the last pack when it release
>packs dont sell separate
… im happy and mad at the same time
Whoever is in of these reveals it’s an idiot
You pull this kind of stunt a month after the game is released not before
Development time went into the dlc
And you have to pay extra to unlock what should be part of the game
This should be announced after the game releases
Ignore me, sorry I’m an idiot. I can’t read. Yeah, I thought that it was day one dlc… but I still beleive locking out hard mode is stupid. Nintendo handles dlc well always, pray it be the case for this game
that winter pack seems very cool! exited about the new story
why is hard mode payed dlc…
If(hardmode == true)
{
RecievedDamage = recievedDamage * 1.5
}
There fixed
And here we go again :/ Way to mess up my enthusiasm for this game!
Or you could just…..not buy it?
This is the same thing all the other company’s are doing. I though Nintendo was different
And guess what, it’s all optional content. It’s not like BattleFront where they literally butchered the game to sell it as dlc.
oh so are you saying hard mode is not basically butchering the game. That is normally a part of the game from the box, now you have to pay 20$ for it. and 20$ is a lot for basically a hard mode and a new story. Thats probably worth 10$ at most. unless this new story features a good 20 hours then its not really worth it
SHUT UP FREAK! YOU HATE IT?! DON’T BUY IT! FREAK!
you disarmed my argument completely
Hey can I offer you some xanax sir?
You’re not helping.
The article says “a new hard mode”. That doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be any kind of hard mode available in the base game. Might as well mean the hard mode included in the DLC is a new and different one. They haven’t shared enough information for us to come to the conclusion that a higher difficulty setting will only be available exclusively through the DLC. If, however, it turns out that way, I can understand the discontent about it, and would agree that it’s extremely silly to lock it behind a paywall.
About the story part… You don’t really expect it to last 20 hours, do you? It’s just $20 DLC, haha. There’s full $50-$60 games that don’t last as long, lmao. Also gotta keep in mind that those $20 aren’t just for the story mode, but other extras are included in that price as well.
I will take what said about a new hard mode to be true. but about the story mode if you played mk8 dlc, it was great. gave a lot for only 12$. Smash was a little high for each charater but in the end i played alot with those characters so it was worth it. nintendo has normally been great with dlc, and i would like to see an good value for my money. the witcher 3 dlc pack were apparently super huge. From what i heard it was worth buying, i just want to see the same for zelda not just a 4 hour story mode, a few new dungeons, extra clothes, and challenges. That doesnt scream 20$
I think the MK8 and especially the Witcher 3 DLC were of exceptionally good value, but unfortunately, those aren’t the standards. DLC as big as those for price as little as they were offered for are possible, but really can not be expected. $20 for what we’re getting in BotW doesn’t seem very cheap, I agree, but it doesn’t seem ridiculously overpriced either. But again, it’s probably best to wait for details, maybe we’ll be positively surprised.
Also, I agree that the Smash characters were pricey, which is why I never bought any of them. But it’s nice you ended up getting good value out of them anyway.
I just dont want nintendo to go down the hole of overprice dlc. thats why i am harsher on this than i am normally am
“…. a new feature for the in-game map.”
What do you mean? The game is still the same, whether or not there’s optional DLC. The fact that there’s DLC available is not changing anything about the game itself. Not sure why this would influence anyone’s opinion about the base game. Plus, offering DLC is a pretty standard thing to do nowadays. You’re in no way forced to buy it. You can still have a good time with the game even if you don’t buy the DLC.
I personally don’t mind DLC, as long as it’s not ridiculously priced and/or there isn’t a ridiculous amount of content is locked behind it, which doesn’t seem to be the case here. I’ve bought DLC in the past, I’ve passed up on DLC in the past.
Some people are just stereotyping. If one company did DLC wrong, then it’s believed everyone does it the same way, too.
Well there goes my 32 GB of storage lol
This game deserves dlc it makes me even more hyped for the game than ever before!
That is a very lackluster expansion pass. I’d rather put that 20 towards something more substantial than a single dungeon.
Yeah, it’s very lackluster. Not like it’s three packs for just 20 bucks on optional content.
Nice sarcasm there. I like that! Besides, these DLC hating players are just little cry babies who don’t want extra stuff cause they think the game’s not done when it went gold a while back.
I dont get the hate for this people are over reacting saying things like i wont buy the Switch now thats dumb in my opinion you dont have to buy the pass and you can always buy it later
Oh, for a second I thought there was gonna be Day 1 DLC. Thank God it’s not. And you get bonus goodies for the wait, nice.
}{ Horse armor anyone? }{
if there isn’t then its a no buy
One of my favorite DLC for Witcher 3 so hopefully.
Also what they are adding in is Hard Mode NOT Hero Mode
Let’s gooooooooo Team N bih!!
damn you quadraxis…
||You cannot fight the shadow…||
||Even now you fade…||
||One Xbot, alone in the darkness…||
Nintendo Expansion packs are really good ( MarioKart 8 and SM4)
BTW the game is complete its completely unneeded.
But go f45k Aonuma. I’ll just stop on the main game, thank you…
DLC everywhere… and for what? Meh.
If you are under the impression all DLC is content cut from the main game… *shrug* That’s your problem! *sigh* Now I have to spend even more money on Switch in March, though…
Nope, I have not that impression, though I dislike this type of monetization. That’s all. I don’t like to have additional ‘episodes’ for 20 bucks. Though I do like entire new campaign based on the old engine like it was Fallout New Vegas for Fallout.
For me, it depends on replayability or if the additional episodes are at least 15% as long as the main game. And 20 bucks is better than many other season passes that usually go anywhere from 30 bucks to even 90.
15% seems a bit short for a third of the original price, especially since all the game is in and they just have to do additional artset. Partially justified by the fact that DLC are downloaded by few persons. Though I would prefer Nintendo to focus on new big content and pay for it (like it was Majora’s Mask for Ocarina, where they mantained many assets but justified the price with a big new campaign with some new artset).
isnt Nintendo doing the same thing we hate others doing (company’s like ea)
Nintendo’s version is even worse. You can’t buy the DLC separately.
thats because this is really one dlc pack. pack 2 is the only one worth getting
I SAID SHUT UP! YOU NINTENDO DLC HATING IDIOT! IT’S NOT TO FINISH THE GAME, IT’S ADD EXTRA STUFF! LIKE THE STAGES AND CHARACTERS IN SMASH BROS. YOU DUNCE HEADED IDIOT!
well then…
You hitting that angel dust, I see
The problem with EA’s shenanigans is that they tend to release lackluster experiences and then try to sell through DLC what the game should have been when it was released.
As far as we’ve heard, BotW is a complete experience, and this DLC is just a neat literal expansion on the core game rather than a part of the game that should’ve already been there (except for Hard Mode, that’s a bit strange, unless they do some interesting stuff with it).
I agree to that but this dlc doesnt scream 20$. this makes me fear for the future of nintendo and what industry they are changing into
Yes, but hypocrits will find a way to justify it.
Because, well, its Nintendo, and Nintendo grows flowers that never die, because bees pollinate, and that pollen comes from apples that only grow on mt fuji, and the snow that melts down from mt fuji turns to spring water that then doesnt need purification, and that washes the hands of Miyamoto were he then thinks clearly and works in his cubicle to come up with the amazing prices for this dlc that isnt made until after the game goes gold.
So you know, science. 😐
(also, give it up for run on sentences 😂)
I’ll wait on this. Mario Kart 8 DLC was very good.
Yep, sure was. True I still want the Squid Sisters as guest racers in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but hey, they haven’t ruled out that DLC will be coming! They’re probably considering it and I’m hoping the Squid Sisters are added as racers!
How fun is that. I hope it gets a digital download soon. On the switch.
My one hangup here is with Hard Mode. If this is the one boost in difficulty the game gets, then it’s lame to stick that behind a paywall. However, if Hero Mode is unlocked for free and Hard Mode is basically the 200cc version of that, then I take no issue w/ the DLC.
As far as everything else in the package, it’s fine. That’s clearly supplementary content and not the missing end of a game or something. Releasing that later in the year is fine.
Considering the single dungeon, I wonder: Will it be a multi-parter like the main dungeons found in Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks? Granted I imagine this would be more enjoyable to go through than PH’s, if that’s what this is.
BotW with 5 amiibo and DLC packs (complete game) will cost $283 with tax in Canada (about $216 USD). Pricey. Especially considering people will also be buying a $452 console just for this purpose. So over $700 to play the new Zelda. Ouch.
As long as Nintendo don’t ignore Wii U fans for future DLC this is awesome
“… a new hard mode and a new feature for the in-game map. ”
Fuck you Nintendo. If this wasn’t the most massive Zelda title to date I would skip it. But I guarantee it’s the last time you see my money for pulling this stunt. Hard mode and a game feature behind a pay wall.
It’s not that difficult to implement the lame hard modes they have, which is just more damage or faster AI. We all know it’s not more enemies on screen as the systems can’t handle more.
And adding a feature down the road shows the title was either rushed or it’s going to be utterly useless so late in release.
But I can tell the fanboys will each shit out of Nintendo’s hand as long as they get their precious. Kind of glad I’m not Switching now.

Absolutely SICK! This is so sweet!
I don’t know if this is good or bad news? I’m not a DLC sort of person. With only a few exceptions. So I’ll probably never get to experience it (unless it’s very tempting).
||I suggest you wait until High Command has a sales week…||
Game looks like it is bursting at the seams with content. A little more and it’s clothes won’t be able to fit.
This infuriates me.
Then get over it.
So 80 bucks for Zelda BotW on my Switch. I’m good with that!
So does that mean you pay once and get the DLC forever, or do you have to pay monthly/yearly to keep it unlocked?
My opinion on this will all come down to how much additional content the winter pack provides. Having to pay for hero mode and a trial, which I assume to be similar to past formulas, is bullshit, so this…one extra dungeon better be big.
On the plus side, at least Zelda is an action adventure series without a level system, so there shouldn’t be trouble balancing.
