The ESRB has rated their first two Nintendo Switch titles. Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and 1-2-Switch have been rated E10+, meaning the games are for anyone who is 10 years of age or older. 1-2-Switch contains “Mild Violence”, and Zelda: Breath Of The Wild contains “Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes and Use of Alcohol”.
The ratings summary for Zelda: Breath Of The Wild states that “this is an adventure game in which players assume the role of Link on a quest to stop a growing evil in the land of Hyrule. As players explore the open-world environment, they can forage for materials, explore shrines, and engage in melee-style combat against fantastical creatures (e.g., goblins, skeletons, centaurs). Players use swords, axes, clubs, and bows to defeat enemies that generally disappear amid puffs of smoke. One brief sequence depicts a battlefield strewn with the bodies of enemy creatures; in the background, a few bodies appear to be impaled by spears. The game contains some mildly suggestive material: fairies with moderate cleavage and/or exaggerated-size breasts; dialogue such as ‘I get to see a young hunk draw a bow again?’ and ‘If I have to have something pounce on me, why couldn’t it be a lady?’ During the course of the game, a shop owner tells Link that she only serves ‘…drinks that are definitely just for adults…’; players can also encounter a drunken character that occasionally hiccups.”
1-2-Switch’s ratings summary is shorter, explaining that “this is a collection of motion-controlled mini-games set in a party-like atmosphere. Players can engage in activities such as table tennis, capture the flag, quick-draw shootouts, samurai training, wizard duels, and sword fighting. A handful of these mini-games depict violent acts: a boxing mini-game contains a brief animation of opponents throwing punches at each other; wizard duels depict two figures with wands fighting for control over a beam of energy; the sword-fighting mini-game contains clashing sound effects, while the samurai training depicts characters being conked on the head.”

Is Nintendo of America possibly finally gonna stop being so fucking prudish!? Or did the ESRB guys simply miss something? Matters little to me at this point. They’d have to delay the game in the US if they wanted to heavily censor anything, anyway, and we all know Nintendo won’t be stupid enough to do that since it’s the only big game coming to Switch in the first week.
Sometimes I wish Zelda games were rated M for mature. Not because I want to see dramatic blood and gore, sexuality, or hear lots of bad language. But sometimes it feels like maybe we might be missing something due to Nintendo trying to play it safe. It would be nice to see things get a little risqué.
I’m always wishing Mario games would get a little more mature. Think about it, how old is Mario? He’s a grown man, and he’s going around hopping, bopping, and shouting yipee, ya hoo, alrighty, woo hoo, and so on. He acts like a kid instead of like a grown man, and love interest of Princess Peach.

I can definitely agree with Legend of Zelda. With Mario, it might be harder to pull off but I guess it could be done to be mature without being TOO mature.
Mario is fine as it is, it’ Zelda that should be more open in dialogues and with more nude scenes.
Well, I didn’t mean “Grand Theft Auto” mature. Just, I don’t know. A bit more suggestive or something. Maybe a bit more dark. Also, I’ve always wished for a major art style change with Mario games (no, paper don’t count). Like, when Nintendo first revealed Zelda: The Wind Waker. The way that everyone was so shocked when they first saw Toon Link. Except, in the opposite way. With Mario becoming more realistic looking. With a normal sized body and head etc. You know, graphics with more realism. Even if it’s just for one particular game. It would be a nice change of pace.

Okay, but in the case of 1 2 Switch, no violence is actually *shown*. It’s like Earthbound- no violence is actually shown, but implied (Frankie brandished a knife! Ness took 57 Damage!). That was rated KA when that was a thing, now it’s T. Something’s off about the ESRB nowadays.
Honestly, the ESRB needs to be fixed to be more like movie ratings. Maybe parents would understand the rating system better because the current rating system for video games doesn’t seem to work half, if not most, of the time.
Either that or they just don’t care, which is equally possible.

Why does E10+ even exist? Only 3 years away from having a T rating and most of the time small children are able to handle those games.
