Game Informer and their fountain of knowledge delivers yet again and this time they found out which three Zelda games Eiji Aonuma likes the most. He gave them his top three and also mentioned which one out of the lot he thought was the most underrated. Check out the list below:
3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
“Twilight Princess, because I wanted to create something better than Ocarina.”
2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
“Ocarina of Time is a game that gave me the opportunity to create a 3D world.”
1. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
“This is something my wife also likes, Phantom Hourglass. That’s number one. I was developing Twilight Princess, and the goal for that was to make something better than Ocarina. But then that game was something I proposed as a new style of gameplay, and I was a producer on that game for the first time, so I have a lot of sentiment for it.”
The most underrated Zelda?
“The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. I wanted the users to play a little bit more of that game and have that experience. I love that game.”
Interesting. If tri-force heroes was DLC for A Link between worlds, I’m sure itw ould have been MUCH more positivelyr eceived.
You may be right, although it does not make any sense, since it is definitly a full game.
But it seems like people perceived the game through the trailers as some kind of mini game and that is a shame.
That would have made a lot of since, just how the original Four Swords was bundled with A Link to the Past on GBA.
*sense
||Good, Zelda 2 is nowhere to be seen…||
Hey Now! I lost many hours building good memories of bad times getting lost in that game!
Rambo for the NES was the same deal. Battling screen after screen of 2D combat pergatory.
Some of us are just gluttons for punishment. xD
||That’s why we ancient ones will never be matched in knowledge or skill in gaming by these new generations of cattleness…||
||On another topic, did you receive my coordinates?…||
I had technical difficulties yesterday, and wasn’t able to activate my portal to the outside world. Had to repair home base. D;
Hoping I fare better tonight.
Commander, I can’t figure out Miiverse. How do I check direct messages? D;
||Just go to the letter icon and look for my title, you should have gotten an orange light point notification…||
I forgot that you have to login on your Wii U to see direct messages you can’t see them through a browser! I can’t believe I’ve been away from me verse that long I had people there that we’re happy to see me though. :)
||Yes…||
I’m at work again so I’ll give it another try tonight. I think I know how to get to it it just took me awhile to remember.
I had hell with Bayou Billy so these games would be nightmares for me if I tried to beat them.
I thought he would give the usual answers: 1) ocarina 2) skyward 3) windwaker
half expected him to say breath of the wild to promote the new game
Windwalker is the correct answer.
WindWaker*
Wind Wanker*
PhANtom hourglass was Number One?? Oh no… C’mon man…. c’:
#1 on my list. I even got my Club Nintendo poster for it framed.
How could Majora’s Mask not be in a Zelda developer’s top 3? It’s only the best Zelda ever (unless BotW manages to topple it which admittedly looks likely).
||Because the scientists have the skills of a civilian and so they like the easier tools…||
Simple. He has said that one was rushed. So they had to cut dungeons and content back in order to make the goal of 1 year. If I had to rush a project, then I wouldn’t think it’d be my favorite.
I love the dark Zelda’s, so MM, TP… I hope we see some of the creepiness factor in parts of BotW!
Oh, same. I’d say that TP, MM, Zelda 2 and A Link to the Past are easily the ‘darkest’ (my favorite aesthetic for loz.)
A shame Wind Waker was darker while TP was mostly very dark in appearance only. Hyrule was flooded & long gone, for crying out loud! That’s as dark as it can get in Zelda!
But that’s just like, your opinion man.
Phantom Hourglass is his favourite? It’s certainly underrated I suppose
Huh. PH was meh to me, but everyone is entitles to their own opinion.
(Ditched oot and frames my PH poster in gold as a sign of respect to Lord Aonuma)
Loved Phantom Hourglass! That the game that got me back to play Legend of Zelda!
I guess phantom hourglass is up there for me, just I wouldn’t have expected anyone to have it as #1 compared to most other Zelda games.
I just will forever be salty about that bit where you had to close your DS to print the map. It took me so many weeks before I figured that out because I was under the assumption that games weren’t able to register things in sleep mode. I wasted so much time trying to complete that temple. <_<
GAWWW, Did anyone get a screenshot of NintenMaub wearing the Pickachu Suit?? I missed it!
Hahaha! I had to change it :P
Any chance I can get the pic off Twitter or something?
if not, that’s totally cool. just asking!
Damn I missed it!
It was a little…. small.
||You need smaller appendages to promote your puny muscles, it makes you look more powerful…||
my husband wore a pikachu shirt?!
Can’t tell if you’re joking… hmm..
nothing is wrong with a cosmic diety living their life with a human
R u cheating on me
am i? wasnt aware we were dating..or married.. i swear i only rode you once….. then mario took over
Sometimes when I ride poochy, I pretend he’s you ;)

I make all the ladies wet *wink*
Well then you know damn well what he wears at night or when gaming! so don’t you ask ME what he wears! ;D IDK! I just want the Pikachu pic!
||I detect an unusual attachment to Sub-Commander NintenMau5 originating from you, is it what you humans call love?…||
||*Sub-Ambassador…||
Haha. No sir! I simply find him entertaining! He seems like a fun writer and overall nice guy! of course I don’t really know him, but my instincts are generally reliable! ;D I mean how much of an asshole could he really be at the owns and Pikachu suit? xD
||I understand, my human puppet also posseses this ability, the gift to see the value of lifeforms at their core…||
If tri-force heroes was a couch co-op game for the Switch I’d buy it right now, I would also buy four swords if it was on the Switch as well. We need more couch co-op games!
I have never finished a Zelda game😭😬. Closes one, was link to the past. Couldn’t beat the last boss. I quit, I’m a quitter😭. The caterpillar boss was also tough.
Those really are tough bosses but you should give it another shot, I bet you can beat Ganon if you keep at it! The HD version of Wind Waker is a pretty easy but amazingly good one though if you want to try a more forgiving game though.
But mostly I’m just commenting to say nice One Piece icon, Luffy. ;)
Lol, I have beaten every game exept for zelda cdi.
Me too, hope to finish BotW but I’m not intelligent, I would need a guide eventually. ^^
Phantom Hourglass and Triforce Heroes are both definitely really great and underrated games. I had such a blast with both.
My favorite underrated Zelda that I wish more people would play is Oracle of Ages.
OOA is EASILY the best top down Zelda. OOS sucked.
How dare you! Ages was a fun puzzle filled game, but Season was more action based and better over all. Plus Din shits on Nayru lol.
Nah, seasons felt too boring.
Did you ever finish it though?
I agree with that. OOS > OOA. I finished both, and did the merge at the end. I liked modifying the seasons, that felt more unique.
I just like that it was more action than puzzle. Not that ages was bad, because it was a great game, but I personally thought Seasons was better.
Did you beat you know who at the true ending?
I did! I never had the originals but downloaded both from the eShop.
Definitely agree, neither is a bad game at all. I just enjoyed my time with seasons more is all.
Haha same here. Im disappointed that the 3rd version never came out, but at least we got 2 out of the 3. Heres hoping that Capcom gets to make another 2D zelda game with the switch.
yee
LTTP is the best top down in my opinion. Still the one zelda game I can go back and play any time and have fun. Oracle games were fun, but just not as good in my opinion and far less memorable. Everyone’s taste is different though lol.
OOA was prefecto, OOS sucked.
I enjoyed both but can’t remember much haha
Glad he said Twilight Princess. That is my favorite Zelda game hands down. I am also SO glad he did not say Wind Waker. That is probably my least favorite Zelda game.
Wow I guess the fans of tri force heroes weren’t many because I loved that game
Reading about the game before and after launchmakes it pretty clear that most people just never gave the game a chance. Even many Zelda fans didn’t.
And that is a shame, since that game is really good.
Almost finished 100%ing phantom hourglass and it’s worse than Zelda II. Sorry, having the stylus control everything is anything but fun. And twilight is not better than ocarina so he failed on that. It’s far easier, and far more forgettable, and far less magical.
I totally agree with you, fanboydestroyer.
I thought he was about to say Skyward Sword… so underrated yet so critically acclaimed.
The game was good, but some people had the misfortune of the motion controls not working properly. I was one such soul. My system, no matter how many times I calibrated it, would not register the correct motions. It was even worse when I did it again on hero mode. Ghiraheim (spelt wrong I know) on hero mode was a nightmare because of the controls. Story was great though.
Heh, right? The final Ghirahim fight where you have to shield bash and then thrust your sword forward immediately after wound up almost always doing a spin attack when I tried. Died from that screwup so many times…
Yep. Even just basic movements. I would slash left, both fast and slow, to keep trying. Instead he would go right. Like I legit wanted to destroy my Wilmore. Getting my assignment kicked because the controller won’t register properly is not exactly a fun time.
Minish Cap is the definition of underrated.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not my favorite, but I definitely love it.
I’m way too indecisive and non-committal to be able to pick favorites and rank them. OoT, LttP, SS, WW, TP, 1, and 2 are all super duper important to me, and I guess collectively would be my favorites. I got about halfway through MM, and really liked it, but ended up stalling out. Same with L’sA. Hopefully someday I’ll be able to get back into these and finish them off…..and I’m really looking forward to Breath of the Wild!
…..p.s…… am I the only one here who thinks Zelda II is awesome? It’s my pick for most underrated Zelda game, and personally, I would’ve LOVED to see at least one “proper sequel” to it. I think that’s why I like the CDi Zelda games even though their garbage. They’re like the illegitimate bastard children of Zelda II. :-)
Cheers!
Zelda 2 is hard but it’s really fun. Also the entire world and creatures introduced in it are fantastic (namely the Zora). Plus the music is some of the best of the series, AND it’s one of the only loz games where Link/Zelda is canon/romantically involved. ;)
Did he just say that Twilight Princess was better than Ocarina Of Time? NO WAY! Not by a long shot. At least, not to me. And come on Aonuma………he likes Phantom Hourglass the MOST? That’s one of my least favorite Zelda games. Not because of the story, but because of the HORRIBLE stylus gameplay.
||He likes it because his wife likes it and because it was his lordship’s first Zelda project as creator…||
I thought his first project was windwaker.
||Not on his own…||
Hmm, I was under the impression that Windwaker was his first solo game. Guess I was wrong.
My #1 favorite is Wind Waker with Skyward Sword being my pick as the most underrated game in the franchise.
