Digital Foundry Compares Nintendo Switch Version Of Zelda Breath Of Wild Against Wii U

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is finally here on both Nintendo Switch and Wii U but which is the best version? Well, Digital Foundry has put both versions of Breath of the Wild to the test to find out. Inevitably it was the Nintendo Switch version that comes out best especially when it’s played in portable mode. That being said Digital Foundry say that if you do decide on the Wii U version you’re still getting a superb game.

Should you upgrade from Wii U to Switch for the optimal Zelda experience? We’d say that depends on how you play it… running in portable mode solves all of Switch’s performance issues and pushes it to the front of the pack. Overall though, Wii U owners are still getting a great game

  1. I’m playing my Wii U version. Love it. Anyone else find Demon Tingle? He was kind of tough. He got tired of fairies and went into a rage. On the serious side, this game is huge.

    1. I have the same impression. I believe I’ll spend at least two whole months to beat BoTW. There are lots of things to explore, lots of places to visit, so many people to talk to.

This will be a thrilling journey!

(Likewise, I have the Wii U version of it.)

        1. Now I’m afraid my prediction of beating it in two months is too optimistic… :o

It’s Saturday today, and I still have a long day in the office. :( But before going to bed at night I’ll be playing BoTW a little bit more — I’ve put The Witcher 3 and Mankind Divided to rest for a while.

      1. Welcome back to MNN, sir — long time no see! Looking forward to see you and Tetris Quadradus mocking each other! ;)

            1. Anubis, the Devil Dog

I honestly can’t say I’m surprised. I’m about buy and play the shit out of BoTW since I know it’s out now. I might get the Wii U version tbh.

I’d so very much love to beat the shit out of Tingle. I’d support him getting into Smash just so I can pummel the fucker to a pulp! And as long as the next Smash doesn’t have that bullshit rule against targeting the same person over & over again in a 3 or more VS Match, I’ll gladly target solely anyone using Tingle, too! *eye twitch*

Yeah. That was an actual fucking rule. I can understand if multiple people ganged up on the same guy but one guy targeting one guy? Bullshit rule.

Sadly, Tingle isn’t going anywhere since there are a ton of Japanese gamers that love the little bastard & even some of Zelda’s devs like him.

          1. I get why they like him, for humor (I don’t). But I personally don’t feel he fits in in the Zelda world. But it’s not my decision. So I’ll live with it.

  2. Noteworthy is that frame rates from Wii U and Switch dip in different areas — in The Great Plateau, at least. But, overall, pretty much the same experience in both consoles. Of course, the 900p helps a lot when one has a big TV, though.

    1. I’ve noticed lots of dips on the Wii u version, nothing unplayable but dips none the less. I’ve played it for a good 8 hours now and

I’ve just met Impa. Theres so much to do and see that I find myself wondering around more then anything.

      1. Yeah, so far I noticed a number of frame rate dips as well, but they don’t compromise the gameplay, thankfully — do you remember all Mega Man games on the NES? Those are respectable frame rate dips!

        1. That’s a game I never got to play :( what a coincidence you ask though, I just got off the phone with my gf and found out she won the Nintendo Classic from work so maybe I can find out for my self later :D

  3. Nitpicking, they are the same. I knew that this was just a port so it’s ok like it is.
I’m happy to play on my Switch the same game of Wii U owners. I’m happy for them too.
Then maybe we will have in the future another Zelda built on purpose for the new hardware with better textures, shaders, etc.
No need for this nitpicking by Digital Foundry.

  4. Although Amazon is sending me a free physical copy, I deleted Smash bros from my Wiiau and am downloading it now. I’ll let you guys know if having it digital makes any difference in performance!

      1. Maybe not but I have to think there might be some speed advantages to accessing it from its own Drive rather than the optical drive and this game needs every nudge itcan get!

I don’t know if it’s because I’m using a digital copy or I’m just lucky but so far I haven’t experienced any gameplay issues whatsoever it looks really great for 720p and it runs very smoothly and no choppness and no lost frames that I can see with my casual eyes.

  5. Glad to see I’m not missing out on anything since I’m looking for a console experience and not a portable experience for Zelda.

It’s really too bad that the Switch performs worse as a home console than a portable. Maybe they should call it a portable with a dock instead of an actual home console. They really should have put in some processing power in the base to alleviate the larger screen syndrome.
