GameStop Says Nintendo Switch Is ‘Strongest Console Launch In Years’

The Nintendo Switch launched on Friday worldwide to great acclaim from fans but it’s interesting to hear what retailers have to say about the launch of Nintendo’s latest console. GameStop Senior Director of Merchandising, Eric Bright, has given his views on how the launch went up and down GameStop’s throughout North America.

“Stores across the country last night were packed with customers who couldn’t wait to get their hands on the brand new Nintendo Switch.  We even had customers lining up as early as yesterday morning so that they could be one of the lucky ones to score one of the additional units for our walk-in customers. This is one of the strongest and most successful gaming console launches for GameStop in the last several years. For those fans who are still looking for the Nintendo Switch, don’t worry–we’re getting more. And, we’re pretty sure that there are a lot of gaming fans who pulled all-nighters last night playing their new Switch, and who also called in sick to work today with ‘game-fluenza’ just to stay home and play even more.”

    1. Also this is what happens when you have a killer app at launch too. Things are only gonna get better for the Switch once Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Fire Emblem Warriors, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Super Mario Odyssey all come this year not to mention there’s still that new Pikmin game coming and that rumored Pokémon Stars title coming out during the summer along with more Wii U remasters. If all of that happens it’s a wrap for the competition this year…..2017 is gonna belong to the Switch

    1. The demand for the Wii U wasn’t remotely nearly as high as the demand is for the Switch. I could walk in into store at the time during the launch of the Wii U and easily find one but the Switch I can’t. I tried to buy one for my brother at Best Buy just today and the guy told me that it’ll be a week or two before they have anymore available for walk-in purchases. I’m not guaranteeing that the Switch is gonna be this sales juggernaut but so far, it has great momentum so far and so much potential to be a force to reckon with if Nintendo keeps the games coming and adds more features to it

        1. If you haven’t been keeping up, then you have no idea. I did just gone to the mall yesterday and I gone to most gaming stores there…I even took a picture at the best buy there too…all that was left was one pack of joycons, one book of breath of the wild limited edition, and one car charger for the switch…trust us, its a hit, its been sold out before the system was even near launch…I still can find one even after its release. No store had any preorders a made.

          1. At Walmart here in Houston, I didn’t see a single Switch at where they’re supposed to be. All empty. The only Switch game that was there at the time was Just Dance (the new one on Switch). I saw the Botw and Bomberman tags but the games weren’t there lol

  1. Hey gamestop, thanks fo refunding me the money i paid for shipping! You still screwed up my order, so i won’t pre-order anything from you again! But nonetheless, i’m looking forward to use my switch tomorrow.

    1. I’m right with ya on that. Amazon screwed my order over and I’ll be playing tomorrow, but their customer service is usually solid so I’ll give them a pass this time.

  2. This is what happens when a new console launches with a killer app. It’s not rocket science. If the Switch wasn’t launching with a game like Zelda I would have waited until the holiday season.

    1. I’m still waiting. Mostly because I don’t have the money or time to be getting a Switch. I’m in my last semester of college. But, when I settle down with a job and I gain more free time, perhaps I’ll be able to get the Switch. Meanwhile, I was thinking of just getting BoTW on my Wii U. No need to get the Switch if the killer app is on a console I already own. Plus I save on $240.00-$235.00.

    2. Exactly. Nintendo sacrificing the games controls and throwing the WiiU under the bus is paying off so far. We’ll see how long it lasts.

    3. It plays amazing on WiiU and looks amazing. I would do that if I were you. You may want to consider downloading. I am running it off my System Memory and it’s been smooth all night.

Unless you really want to pay $300 to take Zelda out of the house, I would just buy it for the WiiU.

  3. Reminds me of the Wii launch. They were impossible to find. So far that’s a good sign for the Switch. But we won’t truly find out how successful this thing is going to be for another month or two.

As for the Wii U, I was able to walk into Best Buy the morning of launch day (like 11am or Noon) and there were TONS of them just sitting there. No demand at all really. Wii U was a disaster from Day 1.

  4. “This is one of the strongest and most successful gaming console launches for GameStop in the last several years.”
Only 3 consoles launched in the last five years: the PS4, the Xbox One, and the Wii U. So the Switch only needed to have a more successful launch than the Wii U (which isn’t hard) to qualify as “one of the most successful console launches in the last several years”. Way to use so many words without actually saying anything.

    1. Just to be clear, I’ve always been a fan of modern Nintendo consoles and I want the Switch to be successful. But statements like the one above are ridiculous and meaningless.

  5. I wonder if Nintendo will put more focus on shipping more NES Classic Mini’s to stores now that the Switch has finally launched. I’m getting sick to death of searching for it. It’s crazy! They’re obviously slacking and ignoring the NES Mini.
