The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been a huge success with critics and gamers alike. The game is currently the 4th highest rated game on online review aggregation site Metacritic. We recently reviewed Link’s latest adventure and awarded it 10/10. You can read that review, here. For now, here’s the top ten highest rated games on Metacritic.
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
- Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 (PlayStation)
- Grand Theft Auto 4 (PS3)
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
- SoulCalibur (Dreamcast)
- Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360)
- Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
- Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
- Grand Theft Auto 5 (Xbox One)
- Grand Theft Auto 5 (PS3)
Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto V, twice? Maybe Breath of the Wild will get similar treatment with its Wii U version.
So the top games are a skateboarding game from Playstation era (gonna have to youtube this) and a car theft game. I would pick Mario and Zelda anyday.
Well, gee, when you oversimplify it like that, of course it sounds ridiculous. The Tony Hawk series was a cherished one that generation. Not only were thet addicting games, but the community was HUGE, and the games were very well built and had a lot of fun customization options. I was never into them all that much, however, their quality is clearly up there.
In terms of GTA, those games are so much more than just a “car theft game” For GTA 4’s time, the game was rather revolutionary and well built and a lot of fun for MANY gamers. Online play, a massive world, TONs to do, and a good campaign. These games have high review scores for a reason. Now, I would personally pick other games over these, but that doesn’t mean these games are suddenly underserving of high scores just because I don’t particularly love them.
But, you can’t deny it’s dumb shit to include a game twice on different platforms… It’s the same game…
I will agree with you on GTA, but Tony Hawk’s influence past its era has been extremely limited. Games ranked that high should have an impact that extends beyond its immediate context.
Sadly that’s not how this website works. I agree that other games should be up there, because by your definition, Halo 2 should be up there since it revolutionized console online multiplayer by creating not only a matchmaking system, but also friend lists, voice chat, and other standards that are still used today on major consoles. All on top of being an amazing game with or without those features. However, such is not the case. Reviewers had slightly more mixed opinions about the game compared to Tony Hawk. The top ten list on Metacritic isn’t necessarily the “top ten games of all time” but simply, the highest rated games of all time, which are not completely connected terms.
I remember mowing lawns so that my wallet was ready day one for “Tony Hawk 2”. Great times! Number two GOAT? Probably not.
Breath of the Wild continues to surprise me. Nintendo could have very well just crunched Zelda plus open world equals quality game. Instead, they created one of the biggest, most immersive open worlds ever made and expanded on the Zelda formula itself in too many ways to count.
Color me impressed (and I already had really high hopes).
yet if you look the users votes is laughable how you can notice there are so many trolls who obviously
haven’t played the game yet they have the right to vote with 0 and throw the avarage score to the garbage anyway 98/100 is the official from the professionals
That happens with a lot of games, sadly. But as you’ve said, the official reviews are what matter, user reviews are a joke at this point, nobody really cares about them, which is a bit unfortunate for those who actually do put thought and honesty into theirs. But yea, no idea what it could possibly take to actually see a point in investing time into writing a whole “review” nobody is going to take seriously anyway, unjustifiably shitting on a game. I honestly can’t comprehend the mentality behind that. I mean, there’s obviously nothing wrong with not liking a game as much as other people, but there’s a difference between giving a game a 0/10, and saying the game doesn’t appeal to you personally while still respecting its strong points + respecting it for what it is.
But bu but bu the professhional reviews are biased towards Nintendo because of NOSTALGIA!! /s
Doesn’t matter. I don’t know how metacritic calculates the average, but there’s a scientific formula that gives the correct average. This formula ignores values that are too far off as erroneous data. If MC calculates the average correctly, the zero votings would have no impact.
That’s awesome that the game’s doing so well, I haven’t been this happy and drawn into a game like this in years.
So it lives up to the hype? I love when games do that! I can’t play this yet and won’t be able to for quite some time, unfortunately. I’d have to get the Switch to play it. And there’s no telling when that’s happening yet. I hope everyone that has it is enjoying it. I’ve waited for this game a long time. I haven’t played many Zelda games. But I can assure you I will play this one at some point. I’m not going to miss out on BOTW. It looks like masterpiece.
I got it on Wii U. It’s so much fun. I think you’ll love it when you eventually get it.
Maaan, I’m so jealous. My WiiU gamepad found the right time to stop working, so I can’t play it yet. Was actually going to wait with the Switch until at least christmas 2017, because more games + saving some money on holiday deals and all, but now I’m considering to buy it a bit sooner, I really want to play Zelda. Not really worth paying to get a dead console fixed, would probably end up coming close to costing as much as I would save on holiday deals, so might as well just go for the Switch straight away. But ya, still not sure. Though, needless to say, the wait’s kinda killing me, hah. Seeing it all over Twitch and news websites isn’t really helping either. q:
I use the pro controller. I’m not sure if you can play without the gamepad activated or not. You don’t have to use the gamepad, so maybe you can play even though your gamepad is broken? If not, that’s dumb they would force it like that. I’m waiting on the Switch, but I’m not waiting on Zelda haha. Maybe you can rent it or borrow it and see if it works workout the gamepad? Unless of course you don’t have a pro controller. I did find a shrine that requires the gamepad though. So you can’t 100% the game without it.
You need the gamepad for some shrines (requires motion controls)
I mentioned that towards the end. But you don’t need to do every shrine to beat the game, so I don’t know if the gamepad is required or not.
Nope, no Pro Controller, sadly. But if I can’t 100% the game without it, it’s not an option for me anyway. :c
Ah well. I’ll have to see what I can do about it, will try to find a solution as soon as possible, don’t want to wait much longer, hah.
Maybe send the gamepad into Nintendo and hope they don’t charge too much for repairs?
Just checked the website, and repairs for the gamepad start at 57,50€, rangig up to 164€, hah. Plus shipping costs I have to pay myself as well. Even if it would cost me “only” 57€, it’s still not really worth it, I think. Instead of spending 120€ (repairs + Zelda) on a dead console, I might as well invest towards a console I’d most likely buy in the future anyway, you know? Seems more reasonable in the long run. But yea, don’t know, don’t know. q: I’m bad at making decisions, you see, ahah.
That is pretty expensive. I think you should just get the Switch in the future then.
If you are interested in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (hopefully it releases this year & doesn’t end up like XCX where we have to wait til 1 year & 6 months to play it from the original release window they promised it,) Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, AND playing Skyrim on the go, I’d say go ahead & get Switch for Zelda now since you’ll have those to look forward to later in the year anyway. I wish I could mention more games, though, since that’s only 5 games to buy for the Switch with Skyrim being the only 3rd party game.
Not very interested in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, wasn’t really a fan of the artstyle in the trailer they showed (though that might still change for the better, I suppose), but more importantly, I never got a chance to play the other Xenoblade games before, so I don’t feel that “fondness” towards the series other people who did play previous entries do.
No interest in Skyrim on the go either. Generally not a big fan of playing on the go, unless it’s on a long plane/car ride, which doesn’t happen very often.
Mario Odyssey is, by the looks of it right now, a definite buy for me. Still unsure about Splatoon 2, depends on what they make of it and how much they improved the things I didn’t like in the first game. I really liked the concept of it, and the single player mode was super fun, but the online multiplayer had a couple flaws that made it hard for me to enjoy it at times; if it’s less frustrating this time around, I’ll give it a shot.
There’s MK8 Deluxe too, but it’s very unlikely that I’ll spend another 60€ on a game I already own, even if it has some extras – they don’t seem substantial enough to justify another purchase.
So, if I buy a Switch now, I won’t have anything to play on it once I finish Zelda until at least summer, potentially even winter, which is pretty disappointing.
But ya, it’s still under consideration. q:
How about you? You gonna pick up one, or even done so already?
Been playing BotW on my Switch since March 3rd when I’m not watching one of my TV shows or WWE or on the internet. Once I finish up with checking my emails pertaining to this blog, I’m off to play more. @.@
But yeah. I really suggesting holding off on the Switch til you have other games besides Zelda to play on it. Now if you can’t wait much longer to play the game & don’t see the point in repairing the Wii U, I say fuck it & just buy the Switch along with Zelda. After all, I only got the Switch because I was fed up with Wii U & I didn’t want to wait any longer to play BotW. Damn Legend of Zelda for being so great! D:
||The First Order salutes you for your tireless efforts with the Wii U…||
Anything for Zelda. :^)
No WiiU? It’s really great on the WiiU, and When you can turn on Twilight to buff up your wolf’s heart containers, it’s really convenient.
If you don’t have any Nintendo consoles, that’s a bummer.

do they use the user score when tere is a draw? cause it is actually tied with tony hawks and GTA
Well I been some breath of the wild all yesterday night and into the morning.
I have to break myself away so I can take my dog out for a two hour run then come back and do some housework then back to breath of the Wild!
Jesuzzz Chist this game is fucking addicting.

Oh, and every Min I spent working on My Wolf Amiibo was so so worth it… I’m so glad he has so many hearts. Saved my butt half a dozen times already.
If not for my hatred for Wii U, TPHD & boosting your wolf’s hearts would definitely have kept it from getting sold at GameStop for in-store credit to put on Switch. I enjoyed having Wolf Link with me around 1 or 2 am this morning when playing BotW til some lizalfos with bomb arrows took him out with his measly 3 hearts. :/ Maybe Nintendo should release some kind of mini game for Switch that allows those of us that don’t have TP to boost our Wolf Link’s hearts. I’d pay 10 bucks for that thing if they had it.
At this point, all I can really do is either hope for that or for TP HD to get a Switch port at some point. If I get too far into BotW by the time one of those two things happen, I’ll gladly start all over from scratch just so I can have Wolf Link with me for longer than what he can be currently.
