When The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild director Hidemaro Fujibayashi first introduced the concept of the game to Miyamoto and Aonuma, they wanted to know exactly what you could do in this new proposed Zelda title.
During an interview with Kotaku last week, Fujibayashi explained, “my response to Mr. Miyamoto and Mr. Aonuma was: You can do everything,”
“But I had to sell it to them,” he said. “How we’re going to make this happen. And I felt like the best way to convey this idea to them was to show them that you could climb walls.”
Fujibayashi’s team built a prototype of the game, and put together a handful of trees, sticking rupees on top of them and hiding them around the map. Once they had done this, they showed the prototype to Aonuma and Miyamoto to give them an idea of how the game would turn out.
“We put rupees at the top of the tree to let them know that this is something we’re taking into account, but I didn’t tell them,” Fujibayashi explained. “All I did was say, ‘Here, play the game.’ So the first thing [Miyamoto] did was start climbing, and he climbed the tree, and once he was able to do that and see that he can go anywhere within this small field, he got how this game will play out and that’s how I presented it to him.”
Once Miyamoto got the idea of climbing trees in Breath of The Wild, he made a habit out of checking out all of them to see what he could find.
“When we first presented this to Mr. Miyamoto, he spent about an hour just climbing trees,” Fujibayashi said. “We left little treats like rupees on the trees, but we also left other things in other places we thought he might go. But he just kept climbing trees. Up and down. And so we got to the point where we go, ‘Do you want to look at other stuff?’ But he just kept on going. Once he got out of the Shrine of Resurrection, he spent an hour just within a 25-50 meter radius outside of that cave just climbing trees.”
It goes without saying that Breath of the Wild’s interactive gameplay has got many of us hooked on the title. With a vast open world with resources to cook, mountains and trees to climb, and much more, it’s easy to see why Miyamoto enjoyed climbing trees so much in the early days of the game’s production.
What’s your favourite part of Breath of The Wild?
I would have done the same thing xD hell, i am even spending a lot of time climbing looking for eggs
I love how they describe it like he’s a test monkey.
i bet you other developers would love to have a test monkey like him
Lol that’s the cool thing about this game though. Everyone plays it differently but nobody really plays it wrong. It rewards you in some way, shape or form for doing what you want to do while actively enticing you to try all the other stuff it has to offer too. I’m enjoying it more than I thought I would.
Yea it’s been a while since I’ve been this addicted to a game. Been playing since I woke up lol
He was just trying to master the almost impossible mechanic of collecting all three apples
Fuck that Apple at the top man.
Take two and cut the tree for the third.
i’m satisfied with two out of three
My first thing I did was jump off the nearest cliff because I could.
thats exactly what i did
I love how you can steal an enemy’s weapon when they drop it. Then they will use whatever is nearby to attack with, even if it means finding rocks to throw at you.
I saw a Moblin pick up a Bokoblin and throw it at me haha. It was pretty funny.
That happened to me too! Hilarious lol
I know haha. I’m like “why you mad at me? I’m not the one who threw you. “
I also had this happen. Of course, the moblin still had a weapon but felt like throwing a bokoblin at me just for the hell of it anyway! xD
Haha improvisation. Usually they throw rocks or dirt at me. I guess that wasn’t good enough this time haha. Poor bokoblin.
I’d agree with the poor bokoblin sentiment but I whacked that motherfucker myself after I dodged it being thrown at me by the moblin. xD I imagine those things will get bullied more often than not by the time I’m done with the game. lol Funnily enough, the last time I played BotW, an electric keese got taken out by a stalbokoblin that was trying to hit me with a rock! It was funny & I even thanked it for the assist.
It’s awesome how quirky the enemies can be in this game. I HATE the octoroks though. They have such long range and accuracy. Still not a major threat, but since when have they ever been such a nuisance haha.
They made the octoroks smart as fuck! Instead of aiming directly at you, they actually aim in the direction you’re running. Basically, they are fucking snipers! @.@ When trying to shoot a moving target, it’s always smart to aim at where it’s going, not where it’s currently at. Don’t need to tell you that, though, since it’s most likely one of the first things those getting gun training are taught.
Hell yeah they’re smart. They went from being a joke to strategic geniuses haha. They must have went some military training themselves haha.
Just have to learn to zig zag from now on when dealing with them on land. Or just do the classic standing still & pull out your shield to make the nut they fire ricochet back at them.
Oh, I zig and zag like crazy. But when I try to climb, they are so annoying.
I don’t zig & zag but use trees for cover when in a forested area. Oh & they aren’t annoying just when climbing but when swimming, too. Or using Cryosis to cross a body of water.
They’re the worst in the water. It takes too much effort to go after them sometimes, so I just deal with it. But the whole time I want to strangle them as I’m making my way across the water.
The game is addictive. I’m so fkn glad I didn’t watch videos with spoilers and such! The world is mesmerizing.
That’s… just freaking adorable, this articles speaks a lot about Miyamoto and Fujibayashi as persons and developers. (I hope Fujibayashi gets more screentime just like these other new faces of Nintendo have been doing!)
My first experience was spent jumping around like an idiot, and then falling off the cliff and dying. LOL! I was just so thrilled to see that Link could finally jump by the press of a button. Then I climbed a few trees. Then fell off of that big tower (twice) because I didn’t know how to get back down.
The very first thing I did was jump. Didn’t even pick up the Shiekah Slate til after I did a few jumps. Then did some more jumps before finally leaving the Shrine of Resurrection altogether! lol I then picked up a stick but instead of heading for the old man, I climbed down the cliff that Link stopped at after leaving the shrine. Wandered through that set of woods nearby for a bit, found a rusted sword, found a Korok, then stumbled upon a fucking rock boss & ran for my god damn life after looking at my stick & the rusted sword and realizing I was so fucked if I didn’t leave! xD I then regretfully stopped playing & went to bed. But the next day after getting home from somewhere, I deleted my save data & started it back up again so I could see the opening of the game again & then went to the old man & explored the Temple of Time a bit before going off to do other stuff. *stops before I make a novel of everything I did before even going to the Great Plateau’s tower* lol
