Breath Of The Wild Almost Featured The Hookshot And Other Classic Zelda Items

Breath of the Wild breaks away from the Zelda formula more than any game before it. This doesn’t just mean the game’s structure is different, but even its items. However, an interview with the game’s director has revealed this wasn’t always the case. In an interview with Kotaku, Fujibayashi talked about how they originally tested the game with both the Hookshot and even Skyward Sword’s Beetle item. Would you like to have seen these items return? Tell us below.

“Hookshot was [one] we experimented with and tested, as well as [the] Beetle from Skyward Sword. After a lot of experimentation and testing, we weeded out all the ones that had potential to detract from the gameplay and enjoying the game. What’s left currently, the four items, were really what would draw out the fun of the game.”

During their original experiments, they played around with allowing Breath of the Wild players to obtain objects within dungeons, as you could in previous Zelda games. They even tried the Link Between Worlds approach, although that was a little limiting.

“We did at one point test what it would be like to be able to obtain some of these abilities in some point in the story. But when we do that, you are pigeonholed into having a specific order of dungeons. We did have ideas [that] if a certain dungeon needs bombs, for example, we might put a little bomb icon on the dungeon walls or somewhere on the ground.”

  1. I dunno, I thought the hookshot or something would be great for this game. Great at giving yourself extra height boosts and stuff within your range before you actually start climbing. I figured that’d be right in character.

  2. It is odd but I absolutely love what they’ve done with this game. I’ve mostly been exploring and I’m having a blast already and there’s still so much more to do!!!

    I think I’m going to call it right here and now: BotW has topped OoT for me.

    1. Yea, it’s the best Zelda game ever made, no doubt. Its honestly the best video game ever made. I have played the game everyday since I got it on release day. I’m just barely at the first dungeon.

      This game is honestly my dream Zelda game. As a kid I used to dream about the perfect Zelda, and here we are 25 years later and Nintendo has delivered it.

  3. Hookshot would of been cool but I don’t miss it I gotta say lol I just can’t stop playing I’ve put in like 50 hours already and I want more!!!

  4. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

    Honestly, the hookshot would have defeated the purpose of climbing EVERYWHERE. However, there are other items I would have loved to see. Maybe the Roc’s Cape as an alternate option to the paraglider. But unlike the paraglider that you only see when you use it, the Roc’s Cape would also be another extra item to wear for fashion purposes. Honestly, I wish the outfits weren’t limited to just bottoms, tops, & headgear/accessories. It would have been nice to change my boots, bottoms, tops, gloves, necklace, earrings, & headgear and wear different ones at all once. *sigh* Oh well.
