Nintendo Says Netflix, Hulu, And Amazon Will Eventually Come To Switch

Nintendo America’s chief operating officer, Reggie Fils-Aime has reassured gamers that applications such as Netflix, Amazon Video and Hulu will eventually arrive on the Nintendo Switch platform. Reggie says that adding applications is not a priority and are not differentiators from the other platforms available.

“We’re talking to a range of companies about other services, companies like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon — things that will come in time,” said Fils-Aime. “In our view, these are not differentiators. What differentiates us is the way you play with the Nintendo Switch and what you can play. And that will continue to be our focus into the future as we continue driving this platform.”

  1. Good news I suppose. However, if i’m carrying a Switch i’d not be bothered about also carrying a iPad or other tablet. So it’d be great docked but it isn’t the end of the world.

    1. Don’t get me started about him.

“what differentiates us is the way you play with the Nintendo Switch and what you can play.”

Sure Reggie but whats wrong with having both? This is 2017 not the 90’s people want as many options as possible.

      1. There’s nothing wrong with having both. That’s why he’s saying Netflix is coming to the Switch.
What he’s trying to say is that Nintendo is giving priority to games and hardware, which is fair, I think. After all, this is a videogame console.

  2. If netflix can be opened without a hassle, while the game is active, then I might use it.
But if the game has to be shut down to use it, I will stick to chromecast at home and my phone on the go.

Like on PS4, right. It’s nice to be able to start the WWE Network or the like & not have to close out the game I’m currently playing.

  3. If you look at the settings on the Switch, it has an option where the console can stay on or shut off when media is playing, so this was inevitable. But it still goes to show how the Switch was rushed out.

  5. Everyone loves to give Reggie hell for being the face that has to announce decisions that seem odd to a western market, but are actually made by a Japanese company with their own market and traditions they choose to focus on first. There’s a good chance that Netflix and all that aren’t on the system cause they wanted to keep the circle of people in the know about NX/Switch as small as possible. The more people that know about something the more likely it is that stuff will leak. Even though I’d occasionally use Netflix, Hulu and Amazon (IGN app too please?) on Switch I remember a lot of people complaining and hoping Switch didn’t have VOD apps and actually saying how they already have too many devices capable of watching Netflix. Knowing that they’re on the way is enough for me. As long as the system and OS are good by this holiday season when Odyssey comes out and they start charging people for online then I don’t think this will hurt them.

“a lot of people complaining and hoping Switch didn’t have VOD apps and actually saying how they already have too many devices capable of watching Netflix.” Fuck those people!

      1. Yeah I didn’t get that. I always want the option to watch things on my newest device but some people just love to complain about options and features that don’t appeal to them.

Yeah the nice thing about having the same apps on all of your different devices is you don’t have to stop using one of them just to use an app & thus have to turn on yet another device. It’s convenient but I guess some people hate convenience.

  7. I’m okay with this. I mean, I do want these services on Switch, of course, and will be quite happy to have them. But there are way more important things that they rightly should put first. Plus, I have at least 10 other ways I can access those services, so the instances where I’d be strongly compelled to do so on just this specific piece of hardware would be very limited and specialized.

Except I would be remiss not to point out that as long as the Nintendo Switch does not have these services, then it is, in fact, a differentiator after all, only in a bad way, since everyone else does have them. And also, I would not be unfair to point out that all this stuff coulda shoulda been dealt with long ago with as long as the system’s development cycle was.

But yeah, no big deal, ultimately. They’ll come, in time. And we’ll have an even better system when they do. Until then, as silly as this sounds, I’m actually more let down by how spartan and music-less the system menus and eShop are, honestly.

I’m just gonna say it. I want someone to slit Reggie’s throat so he can never, ever talk again. Cut off his fingers, too, so he can’t write anything. Also:

  10. So, what is the reason they didn’t launch the system with these features?
Why have we not been hearing much about a new system before and during the launch (seriously, the few months prior to launch, it was almost crickets aside a couple events/videos they did, and the month of February I had to remind myself, “Oh yeah, a new console from Nintendo is coming next month…”)?
I was somewhat excited about the Switch, but now I just see a fancier looking Wii U in many regards. Another console that lets you “play differently” with promises of “a lot of games and support”, and “all these developers and publishers are excited about the Wii – I mean Wii U – whoops, sorry, I mean the Switch”….and I still don’t believe Nintendo really cares. They do whatever the fuck they want – which, ok, they have a right to do, and they certainly have the cash reserves to do these “experiments” and ignore gamers, but that will only last so long.

    I inevitably see this occurring:
“But but but Zelda!” – why I should buy the Switch at launch
“But but but Zelda!” – why I should buy the Switch a year later.

    Hokay.
