Reggie On Third Party Software Pricing, Pressures Of The PSP Release And More

Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime recently took part in a live Facebook interview with TV personality and tech expert Katie Linendoll. In the 20 minute sit-down, Reggie touches on some interesting topics like when he first joined Nintendo in 2003 and immediately felt the pressure from the PSP launch. Obviously very optimistic about the future of the Nintendo Switch, Fils-Aime goes on to explain about the strong release of the console and also hinted at some more surprises for 3DS.

Below is a brief run-down of what the president spoke about (courtesy of NeoGAF member LordKano)

  • Reggie has data for the five first day of sales for the Switch (US), it’s still the best-selling Nintendo system on that time.
  • He was asked the question about why are some games priced more on Switch than on other systems (likely referring to RiME), he just said that it was a third-party decision and Nintendo is not involved in that case.
  • He talks about Zelda sales in Japan, and said that, usually Zelda is more of a western IP and isn’t selling that well in Japan, but this time the game is “killing it” in every territory.
  • Cloud saves. He said “wouldn’t that be wonderful ? Stay tuned.”
  • He was asked about Animal Crossing, Smash Bros and various games. To Super Smash Bros, he specifically answered that “our philosophy at Nintendo is to have one great experience of each franchise on each console. So, in the future, who knows when, you can anticipate that all our big franchises will be addressed”.
  • He talks about when he entered the company, in December 2003 and how he felt pressure about the PSP announcement a few months earlier from Sony.
  • He says that he’s constantly being asked if his body is ready, even when he travels for personal stuff.
  • More surprise to come concerning 3DS.

  1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

    ||Now you see, these third class imbeciles are trying to sabotage our grand design…||

    1. When Reggie says “our philosophy at Nintendo is to have one great experience of each franchise on each console”, I think he forgot about the Wii U. We didn’t get a great Pokémon experience, or Metroid experience, or Animal Crossing experience… we didn’t even get a great Paper Mario or Star Fox experience either, with the former being ruined by a garbage battle system and the latter ruined by using the same N64 story with forced motion controls. Really, I hope the Switch addresses these problems. Would love to see a proper Pokémon and Paper Mario game released for this console.

        ||I think High Command has realised to some extent that they cannot continue down this path with certain weapons without at least making a proper one at the same time…||

        ||The next Metroid will decide this…||

    1. And F-Zero. And a proper Paper Mario and a real 3D Mario and a true Star Fox successor etc. Zelda just barely made it, which means that there was no Zelda throughout the lifespan of the Wii U!

Best thing I’ve read all week! 😂 Poor guy still being chased by a joke he made ten years ago. Even in his free time…

Cloud saves. He said “wouldn’t that be wonderful ? Stay tuned.” Damn right it would be wonderful! Hurry the fuck up with giving us cloud saves! Sadly, they’ll most likely make us wait til paid online goes live but I can understand that since I have to pay for online on PS4 to use cloud saves, along with plenty of other goodies, anyway. Still, that doesn’t mean they have to make us wait to give us the ability to safely move our save data to a Micro SD Card if we’re using one since it should have been a day 1 thing that IS free.

Does that mean Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is all we’re gonna get of Mario Kart on Switch!? *eye twitch*

    1. I think that was obvious since the announcement of the game. Why wasting time with two Mario Kart when people expect diverse IPs? It’s fourteen f****** years that we wait for an F-Zero.

It needs another Mario Kart because the Mario Kart it is getting is just a port with a few fancy additions to sucker people into paying another 60 bucks for what is still roughly the same game from the Wii U but with new “DLC” built already into the game. It should be 30 bucks tops.

Anyway, if Nintendo once again forsakes F-Zero, it’s not Mario Kart’s fault but the developers like Miyamoto who want to wait for some stupid innovative idea to make F-Zero unique.

        1. It’s for those that did not bought it with the Wii U, or others that want to play it again on the Switch.

I think that it’s just an excuse for F-Zero. They don’t want to make it because they think it sells low compared to other games.
Sure they can make it 49. But they know well that there are still millions of people that want it even at full price.

But it’s important nontheless because of variety. Instead of that horrid Excite Trucks they can make a proper F-Zero.

          1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

Yeah. There are a lot of suckers that will double dip even at that price and, as you said, even more that don’t own a Wii U but are getting a Switch. Still, it’d be an issue for people like me that want a brand new Mario Kart for Switch. Now if Mario Kart 8 Deluxe by some chance gets the Splatoon treatment where they add new, free stuff to the game, then I guess I can support it then & not really worry about an original Switch game.

And I agree their reason for not making another F-Zero is bullshit. Hence why I call it a stupid innovative idea. I guess I should have put quotations around it. lol

        1. F-Zero GX would be a good starting point if that Virtual Console is true. It supported widescreen nicely.
I think that a Metroid will come. It’s a big IP, at least outside Japan.

  6. every system has a big budget game, wiiu didnt get animal crossing, fire emblem, a zelda exclusive title, or metriod. sure reggie.

switch might not get its own mario kart but its too early to tell

  7. Cloud saves. He said “wouldn’t that be wonderful ? Stay tuned.”

I’d call this a soft confirmation if I ever saw one. I’m guessing it’ll be part of the online features later.

    1. He says a lot of things. Except there are a few things to consider.

      1. He is the “spokesperson” of NoA. He is not in charge in any way over the Switch.
      2. He is avoiding the question, answering it with a question and answered ONLY his own question. (Which means he is either a. lying or b. he doesn’t know)
      3. He is a public figure, not a developer or in any way responsible for the Switch hardware.

So, I will take everything he says with a grain of salt.

      1. Except, he is on the board for Nintendo. He does have decision making powers. He is not just the spokesperson. I advise you to look at their most recent financial meeting or the one that will happen in April.

An American born guy who lives in America has say in Nintendo of Japan’s, the place that calls ALL the shots when it comes to software & hardware, big decisions? lmfao Even if he did, he’s too much of a puppet Yes-Man to even try to push his own ideas.

          1. You would be surprised what happens in board members. It’s not as serious business business as you think.

  8. Well, this kinda make a lot of sense actually. I Think they are holding off more surprises that they will share with us at E-3. i’m still hoping for that Kid Icarus game. we need another game of it anyway.

  9. “To Super Smash Bros, he specifically answered that ‘our philosophy at Nintendo is to have one great experience of each franchise on each console. So, in the future, who knows when, you can anticipate that all our big franchises will be addressed’”.

*thinks about Animal Crossing’s only Wii U game being amiibo Festival and that F-Zero hasn’t had a game since GP Legend on GBA in 2004

  10. “He says that he’s constantly being asked if his body is ready, even when he travels for personal stuff”

    LOL! So funny.

On the subject of Super Smash Bros., I’m surprised Nintendo didn’t throw Sky Skipper somewhere in the game. Whether it’s a final smash or assist trophy (or just a regular trophy). For those who don’t know, Sky Skipper is an old arcade game from 1981 (also ported to Atari 2600 in 1983) that Nintendo made.

I always found it amazing to see the words “Nintendo Of America” on my copy of that game. Nintendo also made Popeye, but copyright issues are probably why they weren’t able to include Popeye in Smash Bros. But that would sure be awesome (even if I’m not much of Smash Bros. fan).

  11. I read some comment and even me who is not an English born I can read between the line.

“our philosophy at Nintendo is to have one great experience of each franchise on each console. So, in the future, who knows when, you can anticipate that all our big franchises will be addressed”.

At Nintendo we are trying to get one game franchise on each generation. Maybe in the future we can get all our franchise in one console, but that will be difficult, unlikely but possible….. What’s wrong with that??? it logic and does make to me.
