Nintendo Of America President Addresses Joy-Con Connectivity Issues And Dock Scratching

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has spoken to TIME about a number of issues that have cropped up regarding the Nintendo Switch. One of the things that Reggie addressed is the Joy-Con connectivity problem that some people have been experiencing. He also talked about the fact that some people’s tablets are being scratched when taken in and out of the Nintendo Switch dock. Here’s what he had to say:

On reports of connectivity issues with some Joy-Cons

“First, we’ve seen the inquiries, and we here in the Americas are looking at all the information we can get our hands on. We are in the early days of a system launch, and so for us, we want as much consumer feedback as possible. We are directing consumers to contact us through Nintendo Support for any and all potential questions they may have.”

“Specifically on Joy-Con syncing, all I can tell you is that we are aware of and have seen some of the reports. We’re asking consumers a lot of questions. That’s why we want to get consumers on our help line, so we can get as much information to understand the situation as possible. And so we are in a fact-finding mode, to really understand the situation and the scenarios. And with that information, we’ll look and see what the next steps are.”

On reports of the Switch dock scratching the tablet screen

Again, this is why we’re encouraging consumers to reach out to us directly. We have done, as you know, literally hundreds of events, starting with our activity back in January, and most recently the various tours that we continue to take the system out on. As soon as I heard of this report, I asked my teams, “Have we seen this in our own experience?” And the candid answer has been no.”

“So throughout all of those experiences, throughout all the docking and undocking we’ve done, we haven’t seen it. So this is one where if it is happening, we want to understand more as to what the specific situation is. Which is why we want consumers to let us know through our support site.”

  1. the second batch of switches for the holidays should have these issues fixed. if not then fuck you nintendo.

    1. If they do not find enough evidence to their satisfaction, then they won’t fix it. I mean… if it REALLY is only a tiny percentage, then they would be wise to help those customers out to reduce negative press. If they do not help customers with the pleathera of issues out there, then it could throw a monkey wrench in things.

Admittedly, I don’t think I’m getting one at this point.. BUT if I did, I would wait until Nintendo acknowledges and tells us the fix. Be it a new model, an update to the current model or whatever. Even if I wasn’t pissed at Nintendo, I wouldn’t get one until I knew damn-sure the issues were either being addressed, or being fixed by Nintendo.

I wouldn’t want to buy one, be one of the unlucky bastards and be left out to dry.

Also, the Dock should not have had ANY sharp corners or edges. they should have all been slightly rounded, especially with Nintendo using plastic screens.

      1. I remember Ryan (from IGN) saying this kept happening to him, and he couldnt understand why it was happening so much.

Then I found out that the dingo places his consoles BEHIND him. Now, the joycons are pretty weak if all it takes is a sack of meat to desync, but come on. Why in the world would you place your consoles that far away from your tv. It just seems obsurd.

        1. Yeah, I don’t think the distance thing is as big a deal as it being a weak enough signal for some of them to be blocked by either your hand, or your body when playing a game, and depending on where you are standing (such as when playing 1,2 switch, you could find yourself standing between the console and the joycon.

There are a LOT of individual, small issues, and with my luck, I’d get hit with at least one of them. I’m just glad I’m not part of the break-in period for the first time ever. (I’ve been a day1 Nintendo customer since the NES, until now.)

      2. From what I’ve read and heard, Nintendo has been very helpful in replacing/repairing damaged and defective consoles. I can’t remember who it was, but in one video I saw the person said their screen was scratched by the dock and Nintendo not only replaced the console, but performed a system transfer so that he didn’t lose any save data.

They still have to work on fixing and preventing these issues, but so far it seems their customer support has been very helpful.

        1. Well that’s good to hear. I hope others have similar experiences, and I’m glad system transfers are a thing!

  2. well you Switch will get scratched when you move it around while it’s in the dock. Mine doesn’t get scratched due to the fact that I push the Switch against the back of the dock while placing it in, where as everyone who are scratching their Switch are most likely putting it in at an angle as they force it into the dock or moving it around while in the dock thus the allowing the rubber pieces in the dock to scratch the plastic.
Since Nintendo didn’t ship the system with an actual game or anything they should have added a tempered glass screen in as a bonus at the very least because there’s no way in hell they haven’t come across this issue as well, and even if they haven’t it’s a tablet, which all tablets have gone through this scratch issue for years now. Doesn’t matter how much of a fanboy you are you can’t sit there and defend Nintendo on this either.
BTW, you mean to tell me Nintendo planned for kids to lick a Switch game cartridge, the same fans who also bought thousands of 3ds cartridges without a single child choking on one, but didn’t plan for the Switch screen to get scratched by children, and in many cases adults, who are know to scratch the screen of their other mobile devices!? I’m calling BS on this PR crap, Nintendo is F!@#$%^ lying, SMFH:/

    1. They said they haven’t seen the scratching happen, and no one has reported it through 2 months of showcases, and now at launch we have had how many scratched console screens out of a million sold?

      This seems like a non-issue.

JoyCon connectivity, that seems to be something, but also something easier to fix once they fully understand what is happening and the circumstances

    1. Such is Reggie. You could fill a hot-air balloon by placing him below it and have him start talking about anything. Just hot air. Almost never anything substantial.

  3. The dock scratching I think is complete bullshit

I have docked and undocked my Switch countless times already… not a single mark has been left on either the back or the front of the console…

To me, it sounds like these people don’t know how to care for their things and are putting it in the wrong way or are reckless and jumbles it into the dock…

Also… am I the only one that doesn’t like his interviews? xD it’s like he’s a literal machine programmed with the most PR vocabulary known to man… I’m glad they’re looking into these problems, but god damn Reggie speaks and it’s kind of hard to read seriously

      1. Nah, Shuehei is pretty high up in the chain and that man, although he does have his typical PR moments, speaks like a genuine human. So does Phil Spencer. Reggie just speaks like a puppet.

Might be my bias though, since I do not like that turd one bit.

    1. I personally have dealt with these scratching issues, and it isn’t because I treat it like crap. The dock was bent in slightly, making the insertion of the console itself very tight, making contact with the plastic. I even put the console in the dock once, right when I got it, with no protector. It scratched it even then. Since the protector was put on, it only has scratched the back, and seemed to be concentrated on the right side.

I contacted Nintendo about this issue, and they were very understanding. I told them what happened and why I believe it is occurring. They wrote all the information down because it is all so new. They sent me a shipping label to get it repaired, and sent it in. It was great service, and should be receiving it back in the coming week, two at max. Just because you weren’t unfortunate to get a faulty dock, doesn’t mean this issue isn’t real. The real problem comes when people spew this all, and don’t actually contact the people who can do something about it. Apparently spouting problems on reddit gets the problem solved?

Nintendo was amazing in helping me out, and getting the problem solved. This isn’t just PR, and they are aware of these faults in their launch, and want to get them fixed.

  4. Joycon desyncing, while it hasn’t happened to me, is worrying but the Dock scratching is bs. You won’t scratch this thing on the dock unless you’re being a fucking ape shit

    1. It’s not fake at all. They shipped bent docks that are scratching screens. I put my Switch in straight down and pushed against the back as much as I can to avoid screen contact. Less than 10 dockings and it got a for scratch on the screen. They’re bullshitting with this interview. There’s zero chance this hasn’t happened in testing unless they threw out bad docks before doing their personal testing but not for retail. This might not be Nintendo fault but their manufacturer’s. Doesn’t help that the dock has absolutely no padding in the box so any weight might’ve bent he docks. I saw a photo of a dock snapped off in the box. Anyway, just because it isn’t happening to you doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Trust me. I posted on Reddit saying it made no sense when I first heard about it. Then when it happened to me I looked like an idiot. It’s a real issue. I bet more people have scratches than even know. You have to look under direct light usually.

  5. I’ve found that since hooking up my Switch it’s been interfering with my TV. When I’m using the PS4 the picture and sound cuts out for a second or two. I’ve made sure that ‘sync to TVs power state’ isn’t turned on in the settings but it still does it. Anyone else had that problem?

  6. Hey… no one remembers that I said all those days back in the NES Classic release that I said Nintendo wouldn’t sufficiently stock the Switch.

    And here we are now.

  7. I have no problems with my Switch, it’s perfect :)… The scratching is forced, I’ve undocked and docked dozens of times and it’s still like new lol people just making up shit

  8. I have had zero issues with the left joycon, I have taken it to my kitchen and watched as link still moves as fluid as he would if i was in my living room 7 feet from my tv. as for the docks scratching the machine I havn’t even seen a single nic. There was obviously a bad batch that was shipped out but as everyone I know who has one has also reported zero scratches and zero joycon issues I can say Reggie is right on this one it isn’t as big an issue as it was made out to be.

  9. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

Typical PR bullshit talk from Reggie. “We’ve never had this issue of the dock scratching the Switch in any of our testing.” Well least the little puppet isn’t outright denying that others might be having this issue… unlike certain people on here defending the Switch. “I’m not having this problem with my Switch.” Good for you? Just because you aren’t experiencing any issues doesn’t mean someone else can’t be experiencing them. Quit talking as if your experience is the same one everyone else is having. It makes you all sound egotistical as if the world revolves around you. Newsflash: it doesn’t!

  10. I decided to wait to purchase the Switch until there is more software available and to see whether or not third party support will exist. I felt very burned by the Wii because of the lack of quality third party software, FPS’ in particular. I felt the system was made for shooters and those games never arrived…..games geared toward adults in general never appeared. I bought the WiiU because Nintendo said it finally learned from their mistakes and there would not be long periods between new releases (and we all saw it was actually worse for the Wii U). I really liked the Wii and the Wii U as systems, it was just the software that killed them. I really do love my Wii U and that is what has made it easier for me to wait to get a switch. If the switch does not get “good” third party support and there are long periods of no new releases I will get an Xbox One.

  11. Don’t worry. “Joycon connectivity issues and scratches are characteristics of the joycons and dock. These are normal and should not be considered a defect.”

  12. I heard about the scratching issue and proceeded to put eye glass cloths on the inside of the dock sled that touches the screen. Not risking it just in case xD. Oh and if you were thinking of getting a tempered glass screen protector, do not get the HORI brand, friend says its terrible.
