Survey Of 4,500 Developers Shows Only 3% Are Making Games For Switch

The Game Developers Conference might be largest gathering of game developers, but it doesn’t look like the Switch was getting much attention at GDC 2017 earlier this month. According to a survey of 4,500 of the attendees, only 3% were currently working with Nintendo’s latest console. While this isn’t too surprising in itself, the Switch was even being beaten by niche devices like the Apple TV and Linux devices. It’s too early to tell whether Nintendo’s newest system will pull in third parties in the long term, it’s unique design hasn’t attracted many developers in yet. Check out the full results below.

  1. Just remember that a lot of the developers Switch is out on will include the really poor quality ones as Nintendo’s screening process for games they’ve said is going to be tougher for Switch. They’re looking for good quality.

  2. Well now we know Pokémon is all but confirmed so when the Switch starts showing that it can sell strong past launch the devs will come. Just don’t expect games like RDR2. The Switch library will be more like if the Wii U, 3DS, and PSVita had a three way. And that’s totally fine in my book.

    1. I think it will already change next year, though it isn’t that reassuring.
But everyone knows we should not expect good third parties support, maybe they will awake with some ports but I would like exclusive content too. And you need 2/3 years time to pull it out.

I didn’t see a confirmation in that last article. If anything, I just saw a bunch of suckers getting their hopes up in the comment section.

There could be lots of reasons. And it could just be for the hell of it. Just don’t get your hopes up. It wouldn’t be the first time Nintendo or an affiliate let us down.

My honest opinion is so they can piss off & let people down when it just ends up being for a spin off game that they assisted another developer in making. And even if I’m wrong & the purpose is for a mainline Pokemon game on the Switch, the plan could change if the Switch doesn’t take off as a handheld/console hybrid & just ends up used mostly as a home console with the portable aspect forgotten by most Switch users.

It’s taking off… for now. But never say never. It doesn’t make much for Switch to go from this to being just another Wii U. After all, Wii U had a strong start, too, but fell flat a year later. If even that long.

I honestly hope I’m wrong though. Better to be wrong & left in surprise & jumping for joy than to be let down & go ballistic out of rage.

                  1. We’re actually past the point where Wii U excitement went down. You could easily find them on shelves at this point. Switch seems to sell as soon as it’s stocked.

Which can easily be explained by more shitty stock which we all know Nintendo is known for to make it look like something is selling hot off the shelves. They did it with amiibo starting off, with characters like Lucina, & they did it with the NES Mini just recently. I’m waiting for actual sales numbers before I call anything a success. And none of that padding of “number of units shipped” or percentages of things sold with no real numbers to back them up. I lost total trust in Nintendo during the Wii U gen so they have a long fucking way to go to earn that back.

                      1. We got stock recently where I work and it was gone in two days. Nintendo has already doubled the amount of units they wanted to ship this year. People want the system.

How many did you guys have in stock? 3? 5? 7? Double the amount & percentages don’t mean a thing without numbers to back them up. I think I said this once before.

                          1. We had 7 one day, then 5 more in a box I didn’t know about, then I was off for a day, and today I saw 2 more.

                            All gone.

I honestly should have asked if they had any Switch consoles left at my nearest GameStop when I went there the other today. They had about 6 boxes up front by the doorway where they moved all of the Nintendo stuff to. Whether that was the actual number in the back is a mystery I may never know the answer to.

          1. I hope this doesn’t mean we’re not getting that increased third party support that Nintendo said the Switch is getting.

            1. Well, they’re not lying. Wii U support went downhill fast and Switch will automatically be better due to the devs that will move on from past handhelds.

              1. Oh, like the other consoles?

*PS4 and Xbox One get SKyrim Remastered.*
                THIS IS AWESOME!
                *Nintendo gets it.*
                It’s a five year old game….

Boy, gtfo of here and remove that animal crossing icon. You don’t deserve it. XD

                1. Todd specifically said that he ‘couldn’t say’ which version the Switch would be getting. I imagine it’ll be be better than the original vanilla, but I doubt it’ll be up to snuff with the remastered edition.

                2. it’s not that it’s a bad game… it’s that everyone has played it. i’m not buying it again, i don’t care how remastered it is. not a system seller by any means. it will hopefully act as a beacon to other developers but with the numbers cited in this article it’s hard for me to be optimistic.

              1. Funny I bought mine in december right before christmas and had 12 games 6 weeks later that all score 9 or 10’s on various gaming websites for less than 170 bucks.

I still got 14+ on a list that I need to buy all scoring 9’s and 10’s aswell. Thats more games than my WII U (if I had bought it), WII and n64 put together. Gamecube I got around 35 games but allot of those are also for the sake of buying something and not high quality games all the time.

                1. Really? I don’t doubt that you found 26 great games on PS4, but I highly doubt that I would be hard pressed to find the same on Wii and N64 combined. I think I could probably find 26 on each.

                  1. N64:

Rogue Squadron, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Kazooi, Mario Party 1, Perfect Dark, DK 64, Star Fox 64, Mario Kart, Majora’s mask, Golden eye, Super Mario 64, Killer Instinct, Jet force gemini.

That was pretty much it for me personally out of the top of my head. Bought Pokemon Stadium and smash bros aswell but returned both within a day cause I didn’t like them .

On ps1 I had 40+ games altough I do have to admit the ps1 had allot of rpg’s like the snes.

                    As for the WII:

Mario Kart, Metroid Prime, Zelda Skyward Sword, Zelda Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy 1,2, Zack & Wiki, Smash bros (enjoyed it more than n64 but still got boring fairly quik), a bunch of Guitar Hero games that I spend most time on my wii with. I got some more games like punch out, the conduit, mad world both nothing worth mentioning and mostly bought for the sake of buying a new game, I was still a Nintendo fanboy at the time.

                    1. For N64, I personally would add Quake, Doom64, Turok 1&2, Duke Nukem Zero Hour, Star Wars Ep.1 Racer, WWF No Mercy, The World is Not Enough, 1080 Snowboarding, and FZero X to your list. Never played Jet Force Gemini though. I’d also keep Polemon Stadium and Smash Bros., but Smash Bros has aged very poorly. It’s very hard to go back to now, especially with how greatly they improved the formula in later titles.

Are you typically not a fan of RPGs? The Wii had some great JRPGs, but I understand that they’re not for everyone. My list for Wii would at least include The Last Story, Pandora’s Tower, and Xenoblade Chronicles.

Funnily enough, the time around the Wii was when I consider myself to have actually become a Nintendo fan and a core gamer. Before the Wii, I had never played Metroid, Zelda, FZero, Fire Emblem, or any Nintendo IP other than Mario and Pokemon. My experience with the Wii also convinced me to get into the Metal Gear Solid, Halo, RPGs / JRPGs, etc.

                      1. Classis RPG’s are by far my favorite genre of games actually mainly on the Snes and Playstation 1. I preffered the old Turn-Based from Final 1-10 and such. Altough Secret of Mana and Secret of Everymore where some of the best RPG’s on the snes aswell. JRPG’s are oke , but I always preffered the old battle system. They don’t make as many as they used to eather. (Ni No Kuni is still amazing from the current age)

As for your n64 list they are all worth mentioning indeed but i never owned any of them besides Ep.1 Racer, and they ain’t on the level that most PS4 games are today wich was the discussion, since allot of them score 9’s and 10’s.

              2. Also Final Fantasy 7 is the best RPG story ever made (my opinion) , and its a complete remake that will get multiple games cause the game is so big. I might even like it more than any Zelda game I ever played and Zelda has been my nr1 franchise since its first release so that means allot.

              3. ps4 2016:

Uncharted 4, Inside, Overwatch, Dark Souls 3, Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1, Dishonored 2, Xcom 2, The Witness, Dirt Rally, Doom, Final Fantasy 15, FiFa,Nba 2k?

To just name a few games that got released the past year since you mentiont it. Your info seems a bit off to me mate.

                1. They justed released 4 games in the last 3 months. RE7, Zero Dawn, Noih, and Nier. Persona 5 is in 3 weeks. Don’t try to argue with Nintendo fans, only language the read is Mario and Zelda

                  1. So, one basically says, the console has just 1, 2 Switch and many 5+ Year old ports, with both being in fact untrue, then one compares the games of a console that was just released to the games a console gets multiple years after its release, completely plays down the importance of indie games in general and after that you see someone attacking anyone who would want to argue in advance.

                    Internet 2017

                    1. They didn’t release with a bang dude. 12 switch is fun for a few days but it’s really boring after awhile. Doing the same mini games with people gets boring after playing them all. Do you remember playing the shit out of Nintendo land? I know I didn’t. Bomber man is a good game. Online sucks still but it’s getting fixed. Zelda is Zelda. No need to speak there, it’s good. But that’s about it, bro. Fast RMX as well.

                      1. Neither did PS4 but I guess you’ll just deny that for your arguments sake right? Yay knack and killzone exclusive day one and then we get a whole bunch of ports like black flag, arkahm and sports games. Lol right you are saint man kudos to you.

I also find it extremely funny how people complain about Nintendo on a Nintendo site. That level of intelligence is what keeps you stuck behind on monitor in a basement. Lol 👍🏻

                          1. I’m black, Asian, Mexican and alien. So how easy it is to state something on the internet? I question the idea of literally complaing about the launch after the console launched… its past that, time to get over it. The coming months will have games for the console both retail and online, not to mention that E3 is around the corner, if they have games I’m pretty sure they are waiting for one of the biggest gaming events of the year to announce them, stop being so god dam impetient. If the switch doesn’t appeal to you know then go play something else lmao

                        1. X1 and P4 released with way more shit than Nintendo did. And the Wii U even released with more games than switch. What a failure. Why are you talking about yourself in the basement. That’s sad, bro.

                          1. Yup knack and killzone and a few ports that you could still play on PS3 in other words only knack and killzone for early adopters what a great launch library. And lmfao who helped you come up with that comeback?

                            1. I’m sorry but what did Nintendo release but Zelda and a few ports? And these ports aren’t even well known ports. World of Goo? Really? Shove Knight that’s on ever system? 1,2 switch 😂😂😂 Nice damage control. 12 games came out for PS4. X1 had more during launch. How many did switch have? 5? 7? oh yeah?🤔🤔 just Zelda and 1/2switch and ports. Can’t wait to play… No no, wait a minute. My controller doesn’t work. Why is my dock cutting my screen. Does Nintendo taste good when you put them in your mouth?

                              1. It’s easy to talk when you’re in denial 😂😂 who said I acknowledge that it was a great launch? The fact you also don’t know the exact games it launched with also shows the huge troll you are lol go back under the bridge you crawled out off 😂😂

                                1. Excellent comeback. But what games does switch have again? Can’t wait to play Mario kart… Again. And awesome world of goo… Again. And that great shovel Knight for 25 dollars, when every other system has it for 10 and you get the DLC for free. Switch is just so awesome, I can use both joy… Fuck, why is my left joy con messed up. Guess I’ll use my pro controller that won’t work using the D pad. Love this overpriced system

                                      1. Lol okay, have fun with your trash knack and killzone. I’ll have fun with my masterpieces 10/10 Zelda 😂😂

                                            1. I like Zelda, but if you feel happy to only play that shit until August or September in wait for Splatoon 2 to come out, then be an idiot and follow Nintendo’s drought of video games for the switch. I’ll be playing my RE7, Zero Horizon, Persona 5, Neir, Nioh, Kingdom Hearts, MLB the Show, Outlast 2, Rime, Yola Kaylee… Damn what a list.

Nintendo switch games: Mario kart 8. Rime (more money on switch). Yookee laylee (more money on switch ). Sounds like an awesome lineup coming to you. Good luck holding your attention with a game for 5 months. Sounds awesome.

                                              1. Lmao typical Sony fanboy. You give him a list of games and ignores it to prove a false point. 😂😂😂 he’s being willfully dense and ignorant, how stupid can you be 😂😂😂 You reaching so hard it’s sad to see you try lmfao 😂😂

                                                1. I have all systems. I have all Xbox, all Sony , and all Nintendo. Nintendo does not have better games compared to PS4 regardless of the Wii U and the Switch release. And Zelda isn’t better then Zero Horizon. You didn’t give me a list of games, you only mention Zelda. And I’m reaching? You’re mentioning games and the switch has 1 right now. Outside of that, the system is a bare bones system that won’t even be relevant until the next year. You keep up playing Zelda, I’ll enjoy more exclusives than the one game you continue to name

                                                  1. Lmfao typical answer from a fanboy “oh I have all the systems so I’m right” 😂😂 hey it’s not my fault you. Any click a link. If anything that just means you’re as stupid as you sound 😂😂😂 lol I didnt mention game a I gave you link to a list of all games you know because that’s a fact, and you can’t argue fact. Is that why you’re being willfully dense? Lmao he says I mentioned games and then says I mentioned only Zelda, make up your mind you hypocrite 😂😂😂😂 dam the reaching is hard lmfao

                                                    1. You really are a moron. you gave me a list of games coming out within a year. The only game it sounds like you’re be playing this year is the waiting game. Half of your list is ports, the other half are games with no dates. And I gave you a list of games that are actually out and are coming out with dates. Again, what game are you still playing? 1,2 switch? FAST RMX? Give me anything new that isnt a port for this year bro Shove Knight? Oh yeah, port. Undercover Lego. Port. Mario Kart 8? Port. Splat 2 and Mario are the only new games, dude DBZ Xeno 2? Port Xenoblade is scheduled for 2017, yet there’s gameplay to play? 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Can’t wait for that delay. Guess you like milking cows and playing Zelda. I’ll be playing all my exclusives, while the only game you’ll be playing, as I said, is the great waiting game. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Persona 5 is in a few days. Mario kart? Oh yeah, that port is next month. When’s a game coming out after that? The summer time with Splatoon? Oh yeah, there’s no date for that game. It’s 2017 now 😔. Once that gets pushed back and delayed, you’ll be gaming in no time. 😂😂😂😂 What a tool. Guess it’s time to play my mods on Skyrim for the Xbox while you still wait for that port

                                                      1. Lmfao says the console has now games I give him a list of games out and games coming out and still denies the games. Herpa derp 😂😂😂 Hey dumbass the harder you keep reaching the sooner you will find your self reaching around the world shoving your middle finger up your own ass 😂😂😂 The funnies part is that I’m not even debating this in a rational way because I knew from the start you were an idiot, willfully dense, troll. Heck how do you get internet from underneath that bridge of yours 😂😂😂 but its hilarious how your triggered so hard 😂😂😂 also notice how earlier he was praising for having yookalylee now he acknowledges its a switch game but doesn’t praise it anymore but says crap about it for being a multiplat herpa derp typical sony fanboy, tries to switch things around to benefit him sorry excuse for a troll 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

                                                      2. Let me keep going with your list:

                                                        Street fighter – port
                                                        NBA – port
                                                        FIFA – port
                                                        Rayman – Wii u port
                                                        Tank it – port
                                                        DBZ – port
                                                        Laylee – port…

Bro, you get more ports than a foreign country. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Old games and shit you get on your system. You must love failure

                                              2. Learn to read you brain fart, someone said PS4 hasn’t had games in over a year I just listed some for him. And yes I do downplay the importance of indie games cause I know 20 + people who play consoles and none of them give two flying fucks about indie games. I’m pretty much the only person in my circle that plays some of them , while fun they don’t feel like full fledged games to me.

                                                1. And your answer is to insult me. Nice addition to my list…

Seriously, can’t we all just discuss things normally? And why do so many people feel the need to attack anyone, just because they say something not negative about Nintendo or not positiv about PS/Xbox?
You yourself felt the need to write multiple answers to one guy with most of them not even being an argument against what he wrote.
All of this is just telling how you got riled up over a simple comment, wrong or not. You have proven that with your completely unnecessary insult just now.

And about the indie games: I don’t care what kind of people you know, but some of these games sell a LOT.
Just look at games like Kerbal Space Program, Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy and Minecraft (which was an Indie game as well)… Just to name a few examples. There is no reason to downplay them.

                                                  1. Sorry if I insulted you but anything not Pro Nintendo is always looked down upon around here and stupid comments get made about other consoles that offer a way bigger and better library. (my opinion and the numbers don’t lie)

Been supporting Nintendo longer than most people around here most likely ever will. I’m just fed up with the choices they make and the lack of third party.

                                                    1. It’s ok, I might have gone a bit too far as well, sorry.

But there really are problems with both sides at this point, whether one is pro or con Nintendo.
Someone who likes what Nintendo is doing and defends it is not necessarily a fanboy and someone who doesn’t like what Nintendo is doing and questions it is not necessarily a hater. That is something we should always keep in mind.
Always perceving anyone as a fanboy/hater the moment that person has a different opinion, that seems to be the big problem why many of these heated discussions on the internet start in the first place.

To get your point into the equation: “anything not Pro Nintendo is always looked down upon around here” and “anything not con Nintendo is always looked down upon around here” are both true.
The first sentence is a bit more true then the second, but that should be obvious, since this is a Nintendo focused site.

                                            1. The fact that it sold bad says so much about how underrated it is. Great review scores and it barely hit good in sales. Online is just amazing. Story is short and pretty meh though.

                                              1. I skipped Titanfall 1. I have heard amazing things about part two.

Now, I will say, I’m a “Campaign” kinda guy. So is the campaign story redeamable unlike part one?

                                        1. The Legend of Zelda (yes, it is in fact a port), Binding of Isaac, World of Goo, all those Neo Geo games, Shovel Knight, I am Setsuna etc. are all ports. But I don’t know why people turn “ports” into a bad word. Being a port isn’t a bad thing.

                                          1. You can’t list Legend of Zelda as a port because it was released on the Switch and on the Wii U at the same time so it has no relevance as being a port. It is a multi-platform release more than it is a port.

                                        1. A lot of the old games are Indies, you’re right. But I think, honestly, Nintendo didn’t do a good job getting games for this March 3 release. Wii u had so many games at release, it was almost bad to see how it didn’t sell that well at the start. But we all know why.

                                          1. Well I think most people are in agreement that the launch was rushed. They could’ve spent more time getting games if they waited for a Fall launch. I think they were in a tough spot though, and given their options, they may have actually chosen the lesser of two evils by launching now.

                                            1. Zelda was ready to go and people were getting impatient waiting for it. They could’ve released it for Wii U now and then waited till Fall for the Switch version, but by then it would’ve been just another port, old news; and it probably wouldn’t have had the huge impact that it had. Granted, more games would’ve been available, but at the cost of their strongest game in years.

                                            2. Outside of Breath of the Wild, absolutely nothing was in the works for Wii U. That means that if Nintendo waited till Fall to launch the Switch, we’d have another 8 months of absolutey nothing from Nintendo, meaning no main revenue.

                                            3. As an extension of 2, with nothing to sell, the first 2/3 of Nintendo’s 2017 financial year would’ve been abysmal. Their stock probably would’ve plummeted by a minimum of 20% by the time the Switch launched.

                                            4. Nintendo had no launch competition in March, meaning that any excitement for a new console is solely on them. The XB1 Scorpio may very well launch in the Fall, and we’re still not quite sure how it will go. It’s possible that the Scorpio launch would have outpaced the Switch, thus hurting Switch sales.

                                      1. Except it’s not just a handheld it’s a home console as well. So in my opinion it should be getting more attention than it is but Wii U really left a bad taste in a lot of developers mouths I guess. I just hope it gets good quality games right out the gate but I’m already seeing poor quality ports including Dragon Quest II and apparently Bomberman has some low quality visuals. This is what a lot of us Nintendo fans were worried about.

                                    1. The system just came out it was like this for pretty much all Nintendo handhelds (if you can even call the Switch a Handheld) so this is nothing new.

I’m pretty sure things will pick up in the near future.

                                    2. 1) Switch is brand new, whereas other categories have been there for a while now;
                                      2) Where’s the 3DS? Seems like this survey was meant to show Nintendo worse than it really is.

                                        1. If you consider 2D Boy as a smartphone company, you’re in the wrong. Their games have been made for PC/Mac first, then consoles, then smartphones.

They ended up on smartphone because the software is a commercial success. It just makes sense to extend that success to the Switch, as the games are perfect for it’s touch based interface.

The argument stipulating that World of Goo and the like are mobile games is fallacious at the very least.

                                          1. Well, if you like old as shit games on the switch, that’s cool. I’ll save my money not buying the same game for mad money, or get it for cheaper on the systems, mobile devices it’s already on.

                                    3. Pokémon will be key to increase 3rd parties chances of committing to the Switch. Nintendo knows themselves that just because the Switch is the ” hot new kid on the block ” doesn’t mean that 3rd parties will automatically flock to it. If the Switch has a 10 million install base by the end of the year I’m guaranteeing you that more and more 3rd parties will make games for it. Nintendo has got to make sure that they get their heavy hitters out on a timely manner even if it means sacrificing quality a little. An early 10 million install base would be very enticing to even the most pickiest 3rd party publisher/developer

                                      1. Even if Game Freak is working on a mainline Pokemon game for the Switch, it most likely is still very early in development, so it’s gonna take a good while until it actually sees the light of the day. Can Nintendo really wait until then for 3rd-party to show up?
Also, 10 million by the end of the year? Are you sure? It took the WiiU 4+ years to just reach 13m, after games like MK8, Mario, Splatoon, SSB, Mario Maker, Xenoblade, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, Zelda, Yoshi and more. Can a MK8 port, Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey and just a couple other games I can’t even think of top those games, and convince 10 million people to buy a Switch in less than a single year?

                                        1. ” Even if Game Freak is working on a mainline Pokemon game for the Switch, it most likely is still very early in development, so it’s gonna take a good while until it actually sees the light of the day. Can Nintendo really wait until then for 3rd-party to show up? ”

They could port Sun and Moon to the Switch until the new Pokémon game gets finished and even that would move Switch units. You don’t know what Nintendo nor Game Freak has in store for the Switch and neither do I so we’ll have to wait and see

” Also, 10 million by the end of year? Are you sure? It took the Wii U 4+ years to reach 13m, after games like MK8, Mario, Splatoon, SSB, Mario Maker, Xenoblade, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, Zelda, Yoshi and more. ”

First off Yoshi and Pikmin titles have never been system sellers and if you take the time to read my comment you would know that I said IF Pokémon appears on the Switch this year that it can reach 10 million and I stand by that statement a 100%. Secondly the Switch ain’t the Wii U. The developers who strongly supported the 3DS will eventually jump ship to the Switch and while yes some 3rd party Japanese developers make a lot of niche games, it’ll still be more games coming to the Switch’s library. In Japan, mobile gaming is huge and now that Nintendo has a home console that can also act as a handheld I am confident to say that once it’s gets enough content it will be the most dominant gaming device over there. Also the Wii U didn’t really have the games that most Nintendo fans wanted…..like a TRUE 3D Mario title, a 3D Donkey Kong platformer, a mainline Pokémon title, a F-Zero title, a Metroid title, a mainline console Fire Emblem title, not enough RPGs or a sequel to the original Xenoblade.

” Can a MK8 port, Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey and just a couple other games I can’t think of top those games, and convince 10 million people to buy a Switch in less than a single year? ”

Again…..I said if a mainline Pokémon game gets released on the Switch THIS YEAR I don’t see why it can’t reach 10 million, especially with a true 3D Mario title that’s different from past 3D Mario titles due out this year as well. The Switch will have other games besides the ones you mentioned, like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Smash Bros 4 Deluxe (rumored), Mario/Rabbids RPG (rumored), Pikmin 4 (possibly this year), Fire Emblem Warriors, ARMS, and maybe more to be introduced and confirmed at E3. Why can’t a MK8 port move Switch units? Didn’t millions of Sony fans buy the Last Of Us port? Not that many people owned Wii Us to experience MK8 and before you say anything about that Sony used this same excuse when they explain why they ported the Last Of Us to the PS4. All in all we really don’t know what Nintendo has in store for the Switch but I do know that Nintendo doesn’t want the Switch to struggle like the Wii U did later in its lifecycle so I’m confident that they’ll do their best to ensure that the Switch won’t have as many game droughts as the Wii U did.

                                          1. If you yourself took the time to read your own comment, you’d know you actually did not say anything about “if Nintendo releases Pokemon this year”, LOL.
But even if that happened, which is only possible if said Pokemon game is a Sun/Moon port, I still doubt it would be enough to convince 10 million people to buy a whole new system, especially when considering millions of people already own the game, and it came out not too long ago.
About Yoshi and Pikmin, alright, let’s say those two aren’t system sellers. What about all the other games I listed? I remember the times when every time there was a new WiiU game on the horizon, people would go all like “(insert game title) is gonna sell so many WiiUs!!!! It’s gonna be soooo good!!!”, but it never really happened. What if the same thing happens with the Switch?
In relation to Japanese developers and niche games, the Vita has tons of those, but did that help very much in the end? Sure as hell didn’t. What if the same thing happens with the Switch?
And while the WiiU did not get some games many people wanted, it also did get games many did want indeed – still didn’t save the WiiU.
And again… You did not say if a mainline Pokemon gets released this year, lmao. But as I’ve said above, the way I see it, the only way for a mainline Pokemon game to come out on Switch is if it’s a Sun/Moon port (or perhaps a 3rd version, like Crystal was to Gold/Silver etc.), and I’m really not sure if that would be enough to move a whopping 10m units.
About the games coming to the Switch you listed… out of the 6 games you mentioned, 3 are wishful thinking at this point, Xenoblade sort of a niche game and ARMS probably not the most anticipated of games, so you’re just confirming that the outlook right now doesn’t seem too bright.
Following that, you’re questioning why a port of a 3 year old game can’t move a significant amount of systems. Not too difficult to answer. Most people who wanted it already own it, and the Deluxe version doesn’t seem to add that much more content to warrant another purchase for everyone who originally bought it on WiiU. I don’t think people buying The Last of Us on PS4 means they all bought a PS4 for The Last of Us. I’m sure there was a number who did, just like there’s definitely going to be a number of people buying a Switch for MK8 Deluxe, but I don’t think it’s going to make an enormous difference; just like I don’t think TLOU was very responsible for the PS4 selling as well as it did. A lot of people already had a PS4 when the TLOU remaster came out, and a lot of people also already had the original TLOU when the remaster came out, and both of those groups, both large in size, did not contribute to PS4 units being sold because of the re-release of TLOU – I think it’s going to be similar situation with MK8 Deluxe.

But yea, I always believed being patient and waiting to see what happens is the best option, so that’s what I’m going to do, instead of setting myself up for disappointment. It’s just way too early to tell how the Switch is going to perform. We can’t say things are going to be different from what happened to the WiiU, just like we can’t say it’s all going to happen again.
All that being said, I’m really looking forward to this year’s E3, hoping Nintendo has some good stuff to show – good stuff that’s not too far in the future.

                                            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

This is almost the Wii U all over again. Some people hyping up Mario Kart 8 AGAIN as the killer system seller like they did with Wii U. Hell! I was one of those poor fools hyping Mario Kart 8 as THE GAME TO SAVE THE WII U!!! :/

                                        2. Well I think it’ll sell better than the Wii U but only because it’s a handheld and a home console “hybrid” system. It will sell a lot more games intended as handheld games than it will home console games. But this will move console sells for the Switch either way. Personally, I am a home console gamer so I won’t be a very happy camper if all it gets are Pokemon and other handheld type games.

                                      2. Switch will most likely get a good amount of support from those developers who make games for the 3DS. But it isn’t looking like it’s going to get all the AAA multiplatform releases. By this point, I’m pretty sure a lot of developers would have said something if they had something planned. Skyrim is more like a “let’s do a little test” rather than “we’ll develop all our new games for you.” Realistically, plenty of games like Dishonored 2, Watch Dogs 2, Battlefield 1, Final Fantasy XV, and Mass Effect Andromeda could be on the system. But they aren’t. And I’m pretty certain it’s because they think these games won’t sell well. And they’re probably right too. Not even Take-Two is truly on board. Once again, Switch gets NBA 2K rather than GTA V. And no RDR2 announcement at all. EA definitely ain’t on board yet. Ubisoft put Just Dance rather than For Honor. The Switch is clearly not very important to them right now. If the Switch ends up selling very well, we might be able to get a big game every now and then because a few of them might take a risk. But no, Switch ain’t gonna be the one to gain back all that third party. It did not happen with the Wii. And the same is gonna happen here.

                                        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Hopefully it will also await us at Nintendo Switch if Nintendo doesn't FUCK things up again!}

Wii U* Fixed. You forgot to put the U after Wii at the end of your comment.

                                    4. I would be worried if this survey was taken a year and a half into the Switch’s lifespan, but its only been out a total of 16 days. We need to give developers some time to even “think” about making a game for the console.

I would like to see a survey like this done next spring, because it will give us better indication of the developer interest in the console down the line. Right now, the majority of 3rd party developers are still checking out what the Switch will pull off.

So far, we know the Switch has the ‘power’ to handle most games (maybe not some of the huge mega blockbusters, like Fallout), and it is selling well right out of the gate. Also, both Zelda AND Bomberman have sold really well on the console and Nintendo is ramping up production of the Switch due to increased demand. So far, this spells good news and means that the odds are ever in Nintendo’s favor at the moment, BUT until we really see that ‘point-of-no-return-success,’ developers are going to remain skeptical.

Nintendo needs to keep up aggressive promoting like, by being at every game show/event out there to show off the games (especially when they are more limited than the competitions, because while the Switch games, so far, have been really good quality, they are few and far between) and show off the consoles ‘quality’ aspect of ‘quantity.’

Lastly, in the short term, Nintendo needs to have a killer showing at E3 this year. The convention can generate or kill buzz surrounding your products. Whether they do a stage show or electronic show or both, Nintendo needs to bring the pain. By pain I mean the GAMES and by games I mean QUALITY games. We have had some pretty disappointing shows the past few years so everyone’s hopes are pretty low. If Nintendo can blow people out of the water with some surprises, then this, in my opinion, would solidify the Switch’s success, at least moderately. It is already on track to beat out the Wii U, but maybe it could come somewhere further up the chain of success closer to the likes of the Wii?

In the long term, we need to see the next Metroid game, preferably in 3D, because right now the 2D game market is overwhelmingly saturated. We need to see Pokemon come to the console sooner rather than later as the franchise has proven to be one of Nintendo’s biggest assets if not the BIGGEST asset as of late. Animal Crossing needs to come, and probably will. Donkey Kong should make an appearance later down the line as well as a 2D Mario. Hopefully, the Gamecube VC will also arrive and Nintendo will shovel out games on that system instead of trickle them out. Majora’s Mask, Oot, Sunshine, Doubledash and Melee would be killer apps to have on the Switch.

Nintendo can pull it off. None of this is ‘too much to ask.’ Most of this is necessary to seeing success.

                                    5. These are no developers! These are mama’s boys who are unemployed and think they can make the next Minecraft!

                                    6. only time will tell if the switch will continue the pathetic streak of lackluster 3rd party support for nintendo.

                                    7. It’s not an accurate estimate based on the number of devs, although I think the time it was taken isn’t as relevant – back in January, if Nintendo really wanted 3rd party support they would already have tried to get devs in on it, since the console would be releasing in 3 months from then. Given the development cycle of a game, if so few devs were working on a Switch game, it says more about Nintendo’s failure to YET AGAIN try to garner 3rd party support. And here we have Reggie and Nintendo saying how they’ll get 3rd party support, and how devs are “excited” about the Switch, etc. Where have we heard all this before? I wonder.

                                      1. And while it may not take into account all devs, since it was at the GDC, and I want to believe it’s not a snapshot of the overall picture for support for the Switch, it’s hard not to be cynical after what Nintendo has done over the past 2 decades to screw things up in that regard.

                                        1. It wasn’t even taken at GDC, it was taken a month before GDC 2017, by past participants from over the past 3 years. I wouldn’t say it’s irrelevant, but it’s not exactly the great source.

This was taken back in December 2016, not 2017 as devs were very tight lipped about the Switch and really the only devs who said they were working on a Nintendo Switch title had their games revealed during the Reveal Trailer.
