GameStop Set To Close Over 100 Stores

CNN Money is reporting that traditional video game retailer GameStop is set to close 2% to 3% of its stores. This means that around 190 stores could vanish. The company blames a lack of big titles towards the end of last year and the fact that Sony and Microsoft didn’t launch new consoles, which doesn’t quite make sense as the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One S were released.

At the core of GameStop’s issues: It’s not selling enough video games. CEO Paul Raines said in a statement Thursday that “the video game category was weak, particularly in the back half of 2016.” That’s because the biggest names in gaming — Playstation maker Sony (SNE) and Xbox maker Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) — haven’t updated their consoles in a while, Raines said. That creates a lag in business for retailers like GameStop.

      2. Best buy has gamers club unlocked and gamestop cant compare. $60 game is always $47…. $40 game is always $31…. Gamestop has and always will be a free rental service.

  1. why are you guys reacting positively to this? they got rid of blockbusters and hmvs, gamestop and eb games are all we pretty much have left when it comes to giant videogame retailers. so yah, they’ll give you $4.50 for your 3 month old title (sarcasm) but I know everyone will miss the nostalgia of walking in to pick up your pre order.

            1. You got me there. No one incessantly pushes subscriptions and pre-orders at you quite like GameStop does. People will be so nostalgic for that amazing experience :)

              1. I don’t know what Gamestop you guys have been shopping at but none of them are pushing “subscriptions” or upsells at the one I go to 😂 It’s a game store not a fkn Wendy’s

    1. I won’t. Dudes are the reason why DLC is the way it is, and pre-ordering might you content you can’t get in game that’s already on the disc unless you pre order with them. Think of Capcom with MVC3 as an example.

    2. They have terrible policies and getting them out of the way gives the chance for the local game stores that sell from a variety to old and new to thrive. I used to go to excellent ones until Gamestop ran them out of business.

      1. coming from someone who managed a blockbuster for a few years, believe me you’ll miss them when they’re gone. If they’re closing due to sales i’d believe that would be a threat for local game stores rather than an opening. As far as policies go anyone with a brain knows to sell their games through Kijiji or something.

  2. isn’t it more likely that they’re having trouble competing with online purchasing of games such as amazon? I often hear my friends talking about getting really good deals from online. Meanwhile you have to wait for a game to become used and maybe it’ll have a bit of a discount.

  3. I’ll blame a bad buisness model which creates pushy employees who are relentless with needless promotions times the fact that we are moving to a digital only model (I for one love having my library with me always but I’m not the play a game/beat it/trade it customer anymore), anyway, the loss of Gamestop is not a loss.

    In other words, Bye Gamestop.

  4. Really? System cycles go 5 years per system release. The P4 Pro and X1S release in 2016, not to mention GameStop was saying how well it was selling.

    November release:
    – Pokemons sun / moon for 3ds
    – Final fantasy 15 for all systems
    – Call of Duty with MW 1 bundle for all systems
    – Dishonored 2 for all systems
    – Watch Dogs 2 for all systems

    December Release:
    – Last guardian Guardian for P4
    – Dead Rising released for X1

Am I missing something? I know I left out games but GameStop, you suck as a company, not because of the games weren’t released.

    1. yeah, when they closed the one I used to go to about a year ago, I was a little bummed. Then I found out there was another one two blocks away. It’s just better for them to not have to compete with their own stores for sales.

      1. For sure… i found it odd as well. Years ago there was more competition for dedicated video game stores but gamestop has just about cornered that market with some strays, regional chains or local buy-sell-trade spots

  5. It’s sad to say, but I’ve pretty much replaced GameStop in my life. Amazon gets me what new games I want in two days, and Ebay helps me out when I’m looking for that old game that’s no longer manufactured. The only time last year I ever stepped foot in a Gamestop was to spend Gamestop gift cards that family members have given me for Christmas.

Something we agree on. Although, my nearest GameStop is fine for the most part. Most of the employees aren’t pushy or trying to keep me in there for hours just to get me to get something I don’t fucking want.

  6. Everybody talks about how they buy games from Amazon. Yet I’ve NEVER bought new games from Amazon (or any online place for that matter). Going to a store to buy a new game is part of the experience for me. And for most of my used game purchases, ebay is the answer. I rarely use Amazon.

  7. Only a retard can react to this in a positive way, the death of retailers means having to buy everything digital, thus no longer owning the product and being completely unable to resell or lend.
Just because their trade-in is a scam it doesn’t mean we don’t need them to buy physical shit.

  8. I hope the two I frequent aren’t on the chopping block- I work right by one and my friend and I always went to the other one practically on a weekly basis to see what’s new and just say hi, before he was in his accident. I can’t lose those.

  10. Hey Sickr, guess what most of the news about GameStop closing 100 is wrong. I work at GameStop and I know exactly what’s going on and why they are closing over 150 stores.

I hope the GameStop nearest to me isn’t on this chopping block. I actually like mine. That & I got the Pro Powerup Rewards Card the other day. At least give me a fucking year to enjoy that first, damn it! D:
