Yacht Club Games Discuss Moving Away From Shovel Knight

While Yacht Club Games recently talked about future plans involving their shovel wielding hero, it seems the developer’s next project will be something different. In an interview with NextN, Yacht Club was asked about the future. Comparing themselves to Nintendo, Yacht Club talked about developing different franchises that retain Shovel Knight’s flavour. This might mean that Yacht Club’s next game moves away from the platforming genre or their distinctive 8-bit style. What would you like to see next from the developer? Tell us below.

Q: Some time ago, Yatch Club Games confirmed that, in 2017, you would work on a completely new project. Can you give us a little preview of what we could expect from it? Will it be completely different from Shovel Knight?

A: It will probably be something that is very different than Shovel Knight, but still retains our distinctive Yacht Club Flavor. Nintendo made Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, but they are all distinctly Nintendo. I’d love to make another franchise that people love even more than Shovel Knight!

    1. They’re not really a big enough team to do something as grand as BotW, but they could do a 2d Zelda type game. That could be pretty cool!

      1. It would be amazing if we got a BotW sequel using the BotW environment engine. Kinda like how we got Majora’s Mask not too terribly long after Ocarina.

        1. It would be cool! Personally i want them to make a windwakerish Zelda game. Sailing the high seas in the BotW engine would be amazing! Just have a bunch of big islands instead of the tiny ones from WW, and do more underwater stuff as well. But make the underwater sections super fluid with a zora suit, and make it all pretty like Zora’s domain in BotW. And pirate ship battles and all kinds of amazing things! Man that would be good!

          1. Yeah, I would totally dig that! Plus add diving under water and give us the Iron boots right away, and maybe a way to build up how long we can hold our breath, like clocking cardio activities, and allowing us to use objects that trap air like in Assassin’s Creed 4.

I think they would need to be careful it’s not TOO hard, and remains fun, but the possibilities are endless.

            1. Yeah! And eventually you can unlock the Zoras suit which makes moving underwater really fast, and you have a ton of air, or maybe even unlimited! Idk, but it could be really cool!

              1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

You guys are essentially asking for Zelda to do something similar to Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. I’m game!

Shame because I LOVED every second of Black Flag. I like killing horrible humans in games since I’d go to prison for doing that shit in real life.

                    1. I felt that despite trying to act like an open world game, that it was actually really linear. The combat system is simple to the point of boredom. The story wasn’t interesting at all, and I actually didn’t like the character i was playing as at all. Sneaking is way too strict on what you can do, and where you can do it. And there were bugs galore i ran into with that game. Syndicate is way better, but i still don’t love that game.

Shame you have this total dislike of violent video games & can’t appreciate how fun Assassin’s Creed’s gameplay REALLY is. *shrug* Oh well.

          2. It was mentioned in the Making of BotW that Nintendo made a 2D test version of BotW in the style of the original LoZ so that they could test the physics and chemistry. It might be possible for Yacht Club to deliver a 2D game with mechanics similar to BotW.

            1. That would be awesome! Also i knew that they did that its so neat. Also just in case I wasn’t clear, i meant the team wasn’t big enough to achieve the gigantic openworldness of botw.

      2. They did such a great job on Shovel Knight; hopefully their next project is just as golden, and whatever it is, I’ll back it if they take to Kickstarter again.

…damn, I still need to do my dubs of Shovel and Plague, and now Specter.

      3. Awhile back they did a survey asking what type of game you’d like to see them make. Among the choices was “A Mario RPG style game” and just the idea of that makes me smile. I really hope that’s the direction they head in.

      4. Well that’s not surprising. They’ve spent a good chunk of the decade fulfilling their Kickstarter promises (kudos to their dedication), so moving onto something else when it’s done seems like the perfect move.
