A new issue has arisen regarding the Nintendo Switch and it has nothing to do with the left Joy-Con. A few Nintendo Switch tablets appear to be warping when they’re left in docked mode meaning that they have bent a little possibly due to overheating. The information was first discovered on Reddit when user _NSR showed off a picture of a slightly curvy Switch tablet. Once the post went live some other users chimed in to say that they had experienced similar problems. Nintendo has yet to comment on the situation.

Thankfully, it’s only 2 people who’ve had this issue and like I mentioned, I feel the issue is caused by possibly the rear vents being blocked by something which could be why the systems are overheating and bending
Given how much heat this thing generates in handheld mode when it’s underclocked, that makes a lot of sense. Ventilation is crucial.

It happened to me while playing BotW while new patch come out and only that one time.
I took the console of the dock and put it on the desk for a while, then restarted the console and put it in the dock and everything was ok again.

Honestly this is complete bullshit. A system cannot just become warped for no reason, even if it is overheated. If you take the controllers off the Switch, the tablet itself is only slightly bigger than a large phone. The dock does not put any pressure on the Switch, since there is a small gap on both sides of the system. Without some sort of physical force it would be literally impossible for the system to become warped. In fact I’m not even sure you could warp it with your bare hands and have it stay in that position if you tried. This isn’t a wet piece of lumber that gets dried in the sun, it’s a piece of plastic that does not retain moisture and has screws holding everything in place. It actually goes against the laws of physics for a device like this to warp with no physical pressure.
People need to stop believeing everything they see and read on the Internet. Especially from Reddit.
Things can bend from a small amount of pressure over a long period of time. Just thinking about how wood (not just wet wood) will bow over time if you lean it against the wall. That’s just gravity.
I’m not saying that’s the case here, but clearly something bent that Switch.
I gave the example of wet wood because wet wood drying in the sun can actually warp with no physical force. While wood leaning on a wall actually has force bending it. My whole point was that a device like the Switch cannot just warp with no force causing it to. And a dock that puts zero force on the Switch could not possibly warp something in that manner, overheated or not. But yea your right, something bent that Switch. Some sort of physical force.
there is a force… by heating the device, all components expand at different rates, this is a phenomenon exploited in bimetallic switches (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bimetallic_strip)
now on the cooling stage all material will now contract at different rates too… given several cycles of this and you get a bent Nintendo switch…. (kinda also what caused the RRoD and the YLOD on the Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively)
Well like I’ve already said. Ive left phones and other devices in my truck at the peak of summer. The temperature reached over 130 degrees and I had no warping or bending to any device… they were so hot you could barely touch them. But no warping..

The dock is designed badly…I don’t understand why there is anything in front of the screen docking the system.. Screen scratching, bending tablet and more issues are cause by nonsense.

Yeah but I know some fanboys and I believe also one of the authors of nintendotoday.com who reported having these issues and I really don’t believe they would do that. Among 1.5 buyers, of course there might be some crazy nuts, but just like the problems with the joycons these issues seem to be quite serious.

About 1% I’d estimate according to figures provided by my retailer. Though they are also counting people who thinks their device is defective and customer induced damage.
My Switch is still scratch free… I don’t have a screen protector, I’ve undocked and docked the thing countless times, and still no scratches and I’m clumsy as fuck to boot… people need to learn how to handle their electronics
What people found were the some of the docks were bent which resulted in the scratches and there’s apparently a penny test that people started doing to determine if theirs was bent. It’s not all because of misuse

Actually, the dock is the true reason for the screen scratching. It has little to do with the owners’ care in this instance. I noticed after a few uses that the dock was leaving a sort of smear mark upon the screen. The only way to avoid this was to actually pull the front part of the dark outwards by bending EACH AND EVERY TIME I wanted to put it in or remove it. Luckily now I have one of those tempered glass screen covers so this is not an issue anymore.
Things like this don’t only happen because of mishandling the device. The OG 3DS had a design flaw which caused thin scratch lines to appear on the top screen. Can you blame the consumer for that? No.
That being said, we can’t tell if the problem described in the article is a design flaw, a factory error affecting only a very small percentage of the devices, or if it was caused by the user. It’s best to just wait and see if we get an official statement from Nintendo and/or more people reporting the same problem. Can’t really blame anyone at this point – not the user, not Nintendo.

Seriously, it’s been disappointment after disappointment with the Switch so far. This system is unfinished. Put it back in the oven.

They won’t if you have to restart a majority of them from the beginning, all because Nintendo won’t let you manage and backup your save files. I’m a ps4 owner……who can’t play it because the hdmi port broke, a common problem of the PS4.
Look, I used to work in the warranty industry. Every factory produced product, every single one, has a small number that have problems. Most of the time, you aren’t personally the one who experiences the misfortune of being in the 1-4% of people who end up with a factory error. Whenever someone gets the bad luck though, they seem completely convinced that their problem is representative of the product as a whole. The internet has turned this basic truth into a hysterical superstition factory. If a couple thousand people have the problem, fine, it warrants attention. A couple people on a reddit thread? Even if they’re true, it’s utter nonsense to treat it as a serious problem.
actually no… i have a ps4 from the 3rd submodel (where they made it a bit lighter and moved the ports around) yet not the PS4 slim nor the pro….. and as far as i know ps3 and ps4 had their share of design flaws on launch

I remember doing that for the NES. Ahh the good old days. As for launch, only console I’ve ever had issues with was my Wii U. It wouldn’t turn properly. I sent it in to Nintendo, and had a replacement within two weeks I think. No other console, launch or otherwise, ever had issues for me.
Yeah, they were the good ol days….till you couldn’t get the cartridge to work and fidget with it for 15 minutes. XD I hated that.
My brothers and I usually got it working within five minutes. Not too many times longer than that if I remember correctly thank goodness. Slightly off topic, but I knew a kid whose little brother put peanut butter into his Monopoly cartridge. Needless to say, that game never worked again. Not exactly game of the year material, but still.

After 230 hours with BotW in docked mode I cannot confirm this.
Everyone needs to relax and wait for more facts to come in. We don’t know if this was caused by the dock, or if it was sat on, or whatever else. So calm down. Stop blaming the owners, stop blaming Nintendo. Apparently it’s just a couple of consoles. Don’t know for sure, perhaps others just haven’t reported it. We don’t know. If it was Nintendo’s error, I’m sure they will rectify it.
It’s painfully obvious it’s the owners of the device. If it came warped when they got it they would have reported on it then. And a dock that has gaps on both sides of the system could not possibly warp it. It would be impossible, literally impossible. Heat would also not warp the system alone, that too is impossible.
The ONLY way a system could warp in that manner is if it was a factory defect, (again, they would have said something then) or by some sort of physical force…. Sounds to me like he bent his console and he’s trying to blame it on a dock that does not touch the actual device from the sides..lol

It has a STEEL FRAME underneath the plastic. You would need alot of jet fuel to melt that steel.

Heat causes things to expand. If one side of the console is becoming hot and the other is remaining at a much lower temperature, and the whole chassis is attached to a rigid structure (which it is), that means one side will expand while the other stays the same shape, causing it to bend. No *physical* force required. It’s the same reason that vinyl siding warps when it’s nailed down too tightly and then bakes in the sun. Stop filling this comment board with nonsense.

I’ve seen too many of these negative issue reports to believe even one of them. I’ve had no warping, and no scratches. I have reason to believe that these are all ploys to down Nintendo’s reputation. We never seem to hear anything like about Xbox or Playstation, do we?

No issues here and I’ve been playing heavily as well as letting an 8 and 6 year old play heavily without supervision and besides fingerprints…. Nothing wrong with my Switch. The Internet tries to make a couple people’s problems seem like it’s everyone’s problem when in fact it’s just a couple ppls problems… Who knows what they were doing with their Switchs
This console really worry people, lot of them don’t want it to succeed because it can shift the paradigm that electrical consumption (and subsequent TFLOPS) isn’t that important. A console that I cant take with me? And where are the wrinkles or the fur of my beloved characters?

How odd, I’ve played for more than 8 hours straight , and the most my switch has gotten in terms of heat wise is slightly warm. Hopefully this isn’t a common issue.

Unfortunately, my Switch is warped in the exact same way as this guy’s. I’m glad he brought it to our attention, checked it over the weekend and I was surprised that mine did exactly the same thing after leaving it in the dock all weekend playing Zelda.
Nintendo is going to replace it, should have a new Switch and Dock (because that’s bent too) by this time next week, sent it off today.
Just an update on the Switch “bending” issue. I just called Nintendo directly to ask about my Switch unit. The back casing seems to be “curved” on the sides. By curved, I mean the ends are thinner than the middle giving that “curved” appearance. Just to be sure, I went to my brother’s house (who just bought his Switch yesterday) and his is the exact same way out of the box. The representative I talked to confirmed that this is by design and not an issue just as I thought it to be. The side with my screen is perfectly flat. So unless you have a curved screen and by curved I mean seriously curved such as that user on Reddit….then you don’t really have a bent Switch. Just throwing that out there…
Additionally, I would suggest you check your dock for any bending. Give it the “penny test” to know for sure. My dock was indeed bent slightly inwards and little did I know had caused slight scuffing on the back of my Switch on one side. The representative sent me a free overnight shipping label in my email and I will be sending off my dock today. I am more than certain that if I did not have a screen protector on my Switch the screen would have been scratched as well, so perhaps a bent dock is the issue with all the screen scratching. I would highly suggest you guys check your dock as well as the front AND back of your Switch.
P.S. Nintendo Customer Service rocks and is quite phenomenal.
