Aonuma Suggests That Future Zelda Games Will Be Like Breath Of The Wild

Breath of the Wild set out to completely revolutionise the Legend of Zelda formula, revitalising many aspects of the long-running series. These changes left many fans wondering what the future of the franchise may look like. However, a recent Famitsu interview with Zelda’s producer seems to hint at what’s next. While never directly stated, Aonuma certainly gave the impression that open-world Zelda will be the standard from now on. Are you excited by this? Tell us below.

  1. I also recall him saying, “I can’t imagine going back to normal controls,” after Skyward Sword released. We’ll see how this goes.

    1. Came here to say this exactly. I’d love to see them expand the open air concept (seamless overworld-to-dungeon would be amazing) but I’d also be super thrilled with a 1-to-1 swordplay Zelda that was more than a corridor shooter.

    1. Yea, I wouldn’t mind another game like BotW as long as it had proper dungeons. I truly believe that was the main ingredient missing from BotW. Those divine beasts were very lack luster imo. They were fairly simple to figure out, no enemies inside to fight, and all the bosses were the same… like seriously, wtf? Everytime I had to complete another divine beast I let out a big sigh… also, what’s with the voice acting at the beginning of each divine beast? “You can do it link, but make sure you get your map on your shieka slate first”… And every time you cleared a dot off the map.. ” good job Link, just three more to go, you can do it!” …. in the most ridiculous corny voice acting I’ve ever heard. I love the game, but the divine beasts were without a doubt the worst part for me.

  3. I don’t think I’d be able to handle every game being as expansive and overwhelming as Breath of the Wild. I love the game to pieces, but I’m starting to get a little bit of open-world fatigue. Maybe they can still throw traditional Zelda games a bone by releasing those types of games every other time.

  4. Why is this even questionable, isn’t this the way it should be in the time we live in? I loved Skyward Sword perhaps even more than any Zelda game but the camera controlls felt outdated compared to other console games, and so was the gameplay in many ways cause we already had these big open worlds with villages, side quests and other amazing stuff.

  5. While I absolutely love the open world for BotW I don’t think they should abandon the old style just yet. Use the open world for 3D Zelda titles but keep making the traditional 2D ones.

  6. i think they should do something better with the durability weapons, got annoyed at having to switch so much.

    have character development in side character (like the champions)
    and a better story. breath of the wilds story takes place more in the past than present. and there was no story arc

    and lastly WORLD MUSIC

    1. Exactly… good points for sure. That is why throwing the “10” rating out there at all times is a little nuts. I hate the idea of something being rated “perfect” when there are many areas to improve. Story for sure…. Why can’t we live/play the story that is being referenced? Where are the dungeons? The weapon thing is killing me too… I want some bad ass weapons that stick around a bit more.

      I think BOTW is a great jumping off point, but the developers/producers should listen to some more objective viewpoints as opposed to just the car waxing they’ve been getting.

      Great game of course

    2. Personally, I’m rather fond of the music (or lack thereof). I feel it adds to the somber atmosphere of an old world lost to chaos. The soft, intermittent melodies and moments of cricket-chirping silence and footfalls give a very sad and lonely feel, which fits perfectly with the game for me. Traditional Zelda adventure music would feel a little out of place in this world.

      1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

        Good points.

  7. I really wouldnt like every zelda game to be like this. I love this game, however I was just out exploring and before you know it, I made my way to Hyrule Castle and fought and died against some Ganon. It didnt seem right to me that I was able to do that already. Not bad, just different. I hope they utilize this engine and make a whole different game like Mahoras.

  8. I’d actually like to see a more focused plot structure while still using “open world” elements such as having the world we are presented with being as interactive as possible. In playing Breath of the Wild, I think to flip the Zelda universe on its head and put the player in the depths of dungeons for the majority of the game (different dimension perhaps… not going to get into the full idea here), something contained but still vast.

    I think there is a lot of room to play with the open world concept or at least the ultra interactive one.

  9. I’d be ok with that, but they need to tweak a few things to ensure that the series doesn’t lose what makes it special.

    1. Some mechanics have to be changed. Weapons need to last a bit longer and be repairable. Perhaps certain surfaces should be easier to climb and should require less stamina than others.

    2. They need to add a bit more music. The music in past Zelda series has always been one of its most atteactive features. I like the feeling of seclusion afforded by the music in BotW. It fits the mood of the game; but I think it can get old if they continue with it.

    3. The next game has to have at least one major mechanic that sets it apart from BotW and every other game. OoT had the ocarina. MM had masks. WW had the sea travel and sail cloth, TP had the twilight zone and Wolf Link, SS had the loftwing. All past games had a similar formula, but each managed to remain unique in its own right. That must continue.

    4. Some classic items have to return. The hookshot is one. It can work with the base idea of Breath of the Wild as long as no items or areas are inaccessible without it.

    5. Finally, as some on here have said, 2D games should continue and carry on the classic Zelda formula.

      1. Good point there with the time travelling in the 64 games. I should’ve included those in my comment. The motion controls in SS I don’t so much agree with as that was simply an input method, and didn’t affect the game much outside of combat. Plus it had already been done in TP, albeit in a less refined way.

  10. Okay, if it’s gotta be a black and white matter where they’re either all going to be like BotW, or all going to be like OoT/Twilight Princess/Skyward Sword, etc, then yes, please make them all like BotW – and I say that as one who ADORES the other style as well. BotW is just that good!!

    But even better than all one or the other is to mix it up a bit!

    I don’t know if eventually the Switch will be the “everything”, and replace the 3DS like it replaces the WiiU, or if they will continue to coexist for a long time, or if there will be some 3DS replacement that coexists with the Switch. But unless the Switch becomes the absolutely everything, this would be easy – make BotW style games for Switch and “traditional Zelda”-style games for the 3DS/etc.

    In all honesty, I’ve always wanted the Switch to just become the everything everything for Nintendo, although it not happening would make this conundrum a lot easier, wouldn’t it?

    ||I suggest you give me my new weapon soon so I can become far more powerful again…||

  12. Twilight Princess is such a dull game because they tried to repeat an earlier success. BotW might be my favourite Zelda (together with MM), but I want the next one to be different. If I wanted rehashes of old games, I would buy Ubisoft or EA games instead of Nintendo games.

    1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

      Funny you should say that since every Zelda after Link to the Past & before Breath of the Wild was following a similar thing Ubisoft games follow: a formula. Just because each of the 3D Zelda games had something to set them apart doesn’t change the fact they were all still following the same basic Zelda formula started by LttP & improved by Ocarina of Time. I’m sure Aonuma will think of something to make each open world Zelda feel different from the last. While BotW involved climbing & gliding using the paraglider, the next open world could take Wind Waker’s idea of a great sea & use sailing in place of climbing & gliding. But since they seem to be using technology more in the Zeldaverse, instead of actual sailing we’d have a fully automated boat, maybe even a ship, for traveling. Whatever Aonuma decides, I’m ready!

  14. Needs a better plot and bring back the elaborate dungeons. I miss them. I feel like it’s an open world filled with minigames rather than a full on zelda game. I haven’t beat the game yet but am most of the way there. 1 more beast to restore then finish off the shrines and off to the castle.

  15. I love Breath of the Wild, but it doesn’t feel like a Zelda game to me. If they’re going to make all future 3D Zelda games open world, I hope they at least try to include more classic formulas.

    That being said, I’m really hoping we’ll get a direct sequel to the Oracle games, either taking place in Holodrum or Labrynna.

  16. Map size was perfect.. Would actually prefer like 10% bigger if possible with more things happening to fill out the emptiness

  17. I’d love to see another game like Breath of the Wild, but like a lot of other comments, maybe a smaller world or some new items to smooth some areas out a bit.

    Personally Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask and Twilight Princess are my favourite Zelda games (I haven’t played BOTW enough times to know how I rank it yet, but I have completed the story). So I would love to see more games like OOT, MM etc, but also another game like BOTW would be brilliant.

    Basically, it would be cool to see every other Zelda game an open world experience maybe? Like have one similar to the old style, then an open world, then old style and repeat etc.

    Or similarly, since the Switch is (potentially) the new handheld too, why not a OOT/TP style, handheld style (like ALBW, MC etc), open world style, then repeat.

    I do realise Zelda games don’t come that often and by the time we get a potentially 3rd open world game at this point we’ll probably have a new console by then, just a thought though :)

  18. Why Aonuma? Why do you hate Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword?

    Not everyone likes Breath of the Wild. Not everyone likes breakable weapons, hard to find rupees, having to actually survive like Skyrim, SKYRIM, or having to stealth to avoid one-shot deaths, instead of fighting normally.

    Stop changing everything past the point of recognition. Stop replacing what was never broken. If this keeps up, I may have to flock over to Oceanhorn and pray they do their own OOT and Skyward Sword.

    1. You have no idea how annoying it it to take a badass weapon only to break it and be forced to steal another one.

      I’m not that far and I know this will be an issue for my first boss fight.

  19. I’d want the next Zelda to have the world of Breath of the Wild, but the dungeon style of the typical Zelda game. The only problem I had with BotW was the all for dungeons looked very similar, and they were short and really easy.

  20. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

    The next Zelda needs to take the best from Breath of the Wild & the best from the old Zelda formula Link to the Past started & Ocarina of Time improved on. Keep jumping but please let him jump higher than half an inch, as Honest Game Trailers put it. lol If something similar to the Sheikah Slate returns, please spread out the powers better. Sometimes it’s actually fun to backtrack in an open world game after gaining a new ability to see if you can get through a past area differently. Full on voice acting for EVERY cutscene. Maybe an option to actually turn off voice acting for those that still hate the idea. An option to turn off subtitles during voice over cutscenes would be nice, too. More language options that you can change in the actual fucking game. The fact we have to change our settings of the Switch itself to get alternate language voice overs & subtitles is bogus! No other video game console does this! Ugh! I guess Nintendo wanted to be DIFFERENT just for the sake of being different! AGAIN!!! Stupid ideal, honestly! Oh & no more broken common enemies, like the Lynel. Yes. That fucker is broken unless you master every single damn trick in the game to avoid taking damage. Not all of us have time for that shit! More fucking enemies, too! No! Alternate colors DO NOT FUCKING COUNT! Hm. What else, what else.
