Nintendo Discuss Why They Are Charging For The Switch’s Online Service

While their competitors have done so for years, Nintendo has finally decided to start charging for their online service with their latest console. This news came as a shock to some fans, Nintendo first announcing the premium service at their January Switch presentation. However, an interview with Famitsu revealed why Nintendo decided to make such a move. Check out their answer below.

You also plan to start charging for the online service come fall. It’s only natural in this current age, but can you tell us again why you chose to charge for it, and what sort of services it will entail?

Takahashi: We decided to charge for the service because we are concerned with customer satisfaction. We’ll be maintaining the online service and providing new services that we haven’t had up until now, and there are costs associated with those. We’d also like to maintain a stable playing experience and provide proper support. We are working to prepare all of the features until the service begins in the fall of 2017, and details on the service will be available at a later time.

    1. 20-30 dollars with no games? I’m not down for this. And when I mean no games, I mean no games online. If you take a look at the Wii U, there was only a handful of games that actually used online. Until Nintendo changes their stance on online gaming and works on making more of there games with online co-op, paying just to play Splatoon or part chat when I can do this by phone or even use my PS4 for free to do this feature, makes me look at saving my money as oppose to blowing it on once a month games I will not be keeping (the free game a month that comes with this online service).

        1. Re-read my comment. Party chat and going online on for PS4 is free. You do not plus for this, nor plus to message or chat with friends To play online you do.

          1. If you don’t think it’s worth it yet, by all means don’t subscribe and wait until there are enough games that use online. There’s bound to be plenty of third party games that have online and Before the Fall both Arms and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will have been released.

            Really, instead of complaining you should just make your own consideration whether it is worth it to you. The price is definitely not too much for a platform with the features they are preparing.

    2. I’m almost sure I could find a bunch of people in this thread who used to use the fact that Sony and Microsoft charge for online as a negative point and to elevate Nintendo’s free access in their fantasy war.

      Now suddenly everyone’s for it? lol

      1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

        Not to call this one guy a fanboy but yeah. Typical fanboys. Dissing something others do one minute than praising it the next when their favorite does it. Remember when fanboys dissed DLC because 3rd parties did it? lol

  1. We haven’t heard much about what’ll happen when Mario Kart comes out. I know we’ll be getting the service for free until fall but what exactly will we be getting?

    1. I mean, I’m pretty sure they’ll have more DLC and other content. This shouldn’t require online, as it would come via a patch. So, I’m looking at this online thing as a money grab than an actual need. Xbox 1’s live membership is just a prime example of how good things could be at 60 dollars. People will pay what brings content and value. The fact that people are saying 20 to 30 dollars, and Nintendo can’t consider or verbalize any value that will come from there onlin service outside of a free, old online capability NES/SNES free game you don’t keep monthly, just shows their online is just cash grabbing more so to give you this idea to rebuy an old NES/SNES game. And still, even with Switch out, there is still no Nintendo Rewards at the present moment. It’s been over a year with this service too.

        1. Sorry, but it doesn’t. You want me to pay for a service, yet on the other hand, you won’t talk about this service or even give me reason to consider it when Nintendo sounds like they don’t even know anything about it themselves. It just sounds off-putting when you, for one, can’t talk about it, and two, refuse to give valid reason why I would even consider it. I honestly feel that I am going to avoid this, as I am not gonna pay 30 or 40 dollars just to play 3 games online (Mario Kart, Splatoon, Smash port).

          1. They’re not obligated to tell you about it months before it’s launched. You will learn about all its features BEFORE YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. Right now is obviously not that time. Jesus, people.

            1. And that’s why Nintendo fails, stupid business decisions. In truth, Nintendo doesn’t know what to do with online and why they haven’t spoke about it. If they did, this would have been released a few months back when they showcased their press conference.

              1. Umm, what? I’m not gonna get into whether they know what they’re doing with online gaming (I partially agree with you), but saying they fail is incredibly stupid considering even in the Wii U’s disastrous final years, they managed to be profitable. Apple didn’t announce their stupid headphone jack removal until a week before launch the iPhone 7’s launch. This isn’t unique to Nintendo, companies would be stupid to give away their cards well before a launch in any industry. They will tell us about the online features when they feel the time is right; no one will have paid for that service at that point, so it doesn’t concern you.

                1. Let’s stay with your Apple statement for a min. For 5 months, every one knew the 3.5 mil Jack was gone. The press conference was no shock at all. Apple always went crazy on getting their phones thin, so this was nothing new. They also wanted to work on their attachment rate to devices they sold. At least Apple knew they were doing this.

                  And I’m not paying for a service and that’s because I’m not using it. Bomberman just got a patch that still has issues with online. Fast RMX is the only game using online that actually works. There’s nothing new from Wii U to switch with regards to online. And Nintendo isn’t hosting the services, the companies who release the games are. So Nintendo isn’t giving me anything at all, bro.

                  And the last part is that, nothing is free because the features that Nintendo said would be coming “free game each month” isn’t being received by Switch owners. So, again, what am I getting from this free service? I’m not even getting it nor using it. And more importantly, the app isn’t even ready on phones to consider what the service is. It considers gamers and me, and it gives me the idea of me considering to go behind it or not. If you can’t give me an idea to it and you just released a console when other companies don’t pull this idiotic practice, then you’re back to failure. Reggie said Nintendo heard gamers, yet they want to give us an app to use online features instead of built in? Again, Nintendo is still stuck in 1996, thinking I’m gonna stay stuck at home with 3 other people trying to lock on to one part of the screen. Online is the way to go, and for me, this makes or breaks support from me. And I’m not speaking for others, I’m speaking for myself. But I know I’m not the only one for sure.

                  1. Maybe I’m out of the loop and didn’t know (I’ve never owned an iPhone), but I can assure you that it was not “no shock at all.” I had to do a report on the iPhone 7 launch for a client (major carrier) and that keynote drove the highest conversation spike around the iPhone on Twitter that Apple’s ever seen, with the headphone jack driving overwhelmingly negative sentiment. Even looking at Google news from March – August, there’s very little coverage on the iPhone getting rid of the headphone jack. A majority of consumers were both surprised and upset about it, with the most die-hard loyalists defending the move. But guess what? It’s still (unsurprisingly) a highly successful product, regardless of the fact that a majority of its consumer-base found out a week prior.

                    I really don’t see the point of the rest of your comment. I specifically pointed out that Nintendo is not failing, nor is holding out information months before a launch unique to Nintendo. Both of those points stand, and your response is highly off topic. However, this is merely speculation on your part, and most likely 100% wrong: “And more importantly, the app isn’t even ready on phones to consider what the service is. It considers gamers and me, and it gives me the idea of me considering to go behind it or not. If you can’t give me an idea to it and you just released a console when other companies don’t pull this idiotic practice, then you’re back to failure.”

                    You’re incredibly naive to think they “can’t” give you information. They know the details, even if the app itself isn’t ready yet, a summer launch means the plans and details for it have long been finished. As in, probably for a year or two. They’re merely choosing not to give you information. And one last time, them releasing that information now or in two months makes no difference so long as it’s before the app’s release. Either way, we’re learning about the product before we have to pay for it (amazing concept, I know). If you’re not buying the console right now because of online, then all this is doing is making you wait longer, and it likely won’t change your mind. Thinking you deserve that information now is entitlement at its finest, which is a common characteristic among gamers on the internet.

        1. I’n sure we will know before we start paying for it. Perhaps at E3. You know, that convention in the gaming industry that tells the mass gaming market about things happening with games, consoles, and online services…?

    1. That was literally not the answer. The answer was “Because a certain quality is expected, and there are costs required to provide that quality.”

    1. I feel they should have done what Sony did. Build a robust online network first and then once you have a somewhat reliable and trustworthy system in place for some time, then you can charge and more people will be inclined to get it.

      Microsoft has had fairly trustworthy networks pre-XBL on the original Xbox; so they had that…. And even XBL had to build up before more people really bought into it which happened more-so with the 360.

      Right now, Nintendo doesn’t really have anything and charging a few months after launch won’t sit well with most people beyond Nintendo loyalists. Especially with the weird phone thing they’re doing. Makes no sense.

  2. People don’t realize it’s about more than the features. In order to have a online infrastructure that runs correctly 24-7 you need to have employees that monitor and make sure there are no issues. Once you hire people to do that that’s when you worry about features it’s like working at a phone company.

    1. Eh…. Nintendo could approach it like Sony did. Sony built a network first and then several years after establishing and building it up with features and functions that people were fairly confident in, they started to charge for it.

          1. Do you honestly think I (or anyone else) buy a triple A title game every month?

            There aren’t enough quality games to blow that much cash in that time frame. And you would still have to actually play and beat the games. I alone have so many hidden gem roms I haven’t finished yet.

    1. Nintendo has actually put a lot more focus on online multiplayer experiences in recent years. Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, Mario Maker, and Smash Bros. have large online communities; and the 3DS got quite a few Nintendo games with online support: Triforce Heroes, Federation Force (both of which are from series that never previously had online multiplayer), Kid Icarus, Pokemon, Luigi’s Mansion, etc.

      They haven’t had as much online content as the other consoles up to now, but you can bet that with them putting more support into online infrastructure, they’ll also put more emphasis on online play for their games. Luckily, since the paid service isn’t launching until the Fall, consumers have plenty of time to decide if it’ll be worth it.

      1. Well, both Pokemon and kid Icarus doesn’t have much content, but at least the titles are fun to play with. Nintendo is starting to make up after there recent console the Wii U.

      2. Incorrect, Metroid has had online multiplayer in the past. Prime Hunters on DS. I understand what you’re saying though.

            1. Yeah, it was such a fun experience. I don’t understand why they haven’t made thing like it since.

  3. The only way I am going to pay for online on this thing is if there is an online killer app. I gladly payed 60 dollars a year just to play Halo 3. Let’s see what the Switch will give us that will make me pay for its service. I’d love to see some Kid Icarrus multiplayer revamped and expanded upon. Same goes to a new Metroid Prime game. Make it half as amazing as Halo 3, and it’ll be a HIT.

  4. All I’m ok with a paid online service, I can’t wait to see what features it will have in the future

  5. I was worried about having to pay for this when they first announced it, but as time goes on I’m getting more comfortable with the idea, especially since it’s so affordable.

          They also thought Ninty would never do DLC, either. Now we got a difficulty setting locked behind DLC with the new Zelda game. (I was okay with this at first because of how difficult BotW can be if you aren’t careful of where you’re at but when I really think about all the different difficulties the Witcher 3 had for free & how even that game could be difficult if you weren’t careful of the area you were in… I’m not for it anymore. (It also might have to do with the fact my honeymoon phase with BotW ended rather quickly & I’m now seeing a bunch of flaws with the game. I guess my inner Nintendo fanboy kind of kicked in with that.))

              I guess some of us ultimately were expecting the roughly the same Zelda formula of past games but in an open world setting with a few other changes in structure. Honestly, I was expecting dungeons to be as big as Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time; maybe bigger than that since there would be different floors to the dungeons of roughly the same sizes.

            2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

              In fact, the Great Plateau looks like it cold have been one such dungeon at one point in Hyrule itself since it seems the entire plateau is surrounded by man-made walls. :/

  6. I never have (and never will) care about online gaming. So I’ll never have to pay a single penny on it. If I wanted to play online, I still wouldn’t. Because I already pay too much for the games. No way am I going to pay even MORE just to play some dumb online modes, or play against strangers. I have zero interest in that.

      1. You can only do so much with your time. Different strokes for different folks man. So he really isn’t missing out the way you (who like online gaming I presume) would miss out if you wouldn’t play online at all.

      1. When I was younger, I had more time to play with friends in person. As an adult, I barely have that kind of time and a lot of my friends live around the world, so I can’t just hop over to their house any time I want to play games with them. Online multiplayer is great for us to “hang out” virtually when we have a moment.

    1. Yeah no, until Nintendo starts showing features and goodies as to WHY we should be paying to play online, I have no reason to pay.
      For example, try playing on Super Smash Bros online on your 3DS, now fear the input lag + P2P (again, dumb idea) lag, if I’m paying for their online services will THIS get any better? Are ideas we should be thinking about.
      Also cloud saving and monthly freebies.

      This coming from a Nintendo fan with a recently bought PS4 and yearly PS Plus.

    2. At least people who pay for PSN get their money back in the form of free games within two months. With the Switch online fee, you get nothing in return. A rental of a slightly modified ROM from 20 years ago doesn’t count.

        1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

          I don’t know if being a fanboy, being willfully ignorant, or just being plain stupid with no reading skill. Nintendo specifically said the NES/SNES game is only accessible for free that month it’s out but once that month ends, you have to pay for said game. So yes. It is a rental.

            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

              Nintendo said from the get go that the NES/SNES games with online will be available for that month only.

              (Since the stupid comments on WordPress is acting up on me, here’s the shorter version.)

              Here’s from one of Nintendo’s own sites. Read it where it says “Monthly Game Download” & choke on it.

              http://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/

            3. Yeah, Nintendo PR has come out and said it’s just that month you get to play that game. I’m not a fan of Kotaku or their parent company so I’m not posting the link but I know they, along with a few others, did a piece on it. It’s also on the official Switch site that was linked by Kalas.

        2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

          Of course the ones on PlayStation Plus are also rentals but those you can keep as long as you keep the service going. On Switch, it’s only for that month of release. :/

          Now unless you read something that I haven’t, then my bad.

            1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

              Oh you mean this right here: “The free game a month is exactly like PS+. As long as you download within that free month it’s yours to keep as long as you’re subscribed.” Notice how she says WITHIN that free month? Apparently you need to work on your reading skills.

            2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

              It seems we’re both wrong, according to how Syrenne worded it, but only one of us is partly right. It’s still a rental since we don’t get to keep said game when & if we cancel our subscription.

                1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

                  Let’s hope you are right then because unless they cost under 15 bucks, I don’t think online is gonna be enough to get me to actually buy them a second time. …if I own said game, anyway…

            3. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

              Then again, I’ll take their site over what one person said. Just more shitty wording by Nintendo, though, so I guess we’ll find out what’s what in the fall.

  7. I’m always down for paying for Online, so long as it has DRASTICALLY improved quality.
    No constant DCs and unbearable lag like on Wii, pretty please.

  8. If paying for online services means less dropouts/lag in Splatoon and Smash Bros (among other games), as well as other bonuses like that free NES game per month, then I won’t mind, especially of the fee is as low as it’s rumoured.

  9. I love how entitled most of you are acting. Complete idiocy. MAINTAINING A BANK OF SERVERS AND AN ONLINE NETWORK COSTS $$MONEY$$. NINTENDO GAVE IT TO YOU FREE OF CHARGE AND ATE THE ASSOCIATED COSTS FOR THE LAST TWO GENERATIONS. SUCK IT UP AND START PAYING FOR WHAT YOU GET, YOU TWATS. For fucks sake.

    1. I think the main point is in fact getting what you pay for scrub. Player’s weren’t satisfied with the online experience during those consoles because it was extremely lacking in many ways. People who have stuck by Nintendo over the years expect the same level of connectivity as the other Systems. I think it’s completely fair to ask for in this day and age.

      1. Why was it lacking though? Because they didn’t spend a lot on it. Keeping that expenditure the same while adding the subscription fee to the funds they have for their online network you really should see a higher likelihood of the service improving than it staying the same. That’s the most probable outcome. Assuming it stays the same after such a big change is really irrational.

        So really people should keep their complaints for when they have a reason to complain. In the peroid before the fall the service will be tested and you can try it out for free. If you *actually* encounter problems then you should by all means complain to Nintendo so they can improve the service before it launches…

    2. Nintendo didn’t have any infrastructure or unified network in place the last two generations and everything network related was tied to a console (example: if you lost games you downloaded because a system broke or was stolen, you lost those games forever. You’d have to pay to redownload). Soooo…. you’re kind of wrong on that front. They basically did what PC and mobile games do (except worse. At least PC networks like Steam, Origin, etc. have unified accounts that you can keep track of things and redownload games).

      Only console manufacturer who had a fairly robust free unified network was Sony on the PS3 until the PS4 came out.

  10. As soon as they announced paid online I no longer cared about the switch. Killed the system for me. After the wii u how can you be so f’ing ignorant. I’ve played splatoon for hundreds of hours and now the franchise is completely irrelevant to me. They fucked up.

    1. “As soon as they announced paid online I no longer cared about the switch. Killed the system for me.”

      LOLOLOLOLOL this is completely untrue!! You’ve been complaining about the switch before it was even released! As soon as it was officially announced that it was a hybrid system you’ve been bitching and crying about how they lost you as a customer because you don’t do portable gaming, you were talking about Nintendo how “fucked up” back then. Now I’m convinced you are just a troll. From this point on no one should take anything gamingfan2009 has to say seriously. go find better things to so with your time, you’ve been exposed!!

      1. lol a fanboy telling someone else they’re exposed. Yes, I wasn’t happy about it being a hybrid but I watched the presentation with an open mind and the paid online did kill it for me. I actually own a 3ds so I don’t hate portables. I don’t play on them anymore though. I wanted a normal console and so did a lot of others. Lets just hope the general public who buy the switch aren’t a bunch of f’ing retards like minority like you on the internet and pay for online.

      2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

        And some people seriously bitch about what I type & call me a troll! lol

  11. pc online is free and better than all of theses paid online services. If you pay for any of them you arent a gamer. You’re a corporate sheep and are ruining gaming for everyone else.

    1. Can’t you just speak for yourself? I could respect your opinion if you say it’s just you that doesn’t like paying for online, but calling other people that pay for it not “real gamers” is just ignorant.

  12. Remember how online was online was free for games on PS3, DS, 3DS, Wii and Wii U and (for quite a few of the cases) it worked pretty much fine? Oh right, there’s also the vast majority of games on PC. I forgot about that.

    1. Splatoon online on the wii u is fine. It just doesnt have voice chat with friends or strangers. It still wont have voice chat with strangers in splatoon 2. Plus the game is using peer to peer. Let them be a bunch of ret@rds and pay.

      1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

        Peer to peer for online is utter shit. If one person has bad internet, everyone gets effected by it. But if you’re happy with such a weak ass kind of online, have fun with the lag & whatnot.

        1. That’s the problem. Splatoon 2 is STILL using p2p. Also Splatoon 2’s global test fire having a considerably worse tick rate than Splatoon 1 does not bode well.

          1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

            It did!? Hm! I didn’t notice the very few times (3-5 matches) when I played the global testfire on my Switch. I guess I got lucky. @.@ *sighs* Yeah. That doesn’t bode well. I guess we’ll be getting a lesser online til it turns into paid online in the fall. Looks like Nintendo didn’t give us the truth about the online on Switch that’s currently free til it becomes paid online. (I hope this is the actual case. I’d rather be lied to about having free online that isn’t the same as what we’ll end up paying for but least it’ll mean what we end up paying for will be better than this current set up.) :/

            1. I’m pretty torn on this. On the one hand, I really want to play Splatoon and Smash, so I hope you’re right and they do actually improve the service if they’re going to be charging for it. On the other hand, I think if they were going to improve it they would’ve announced how already (ie. dedicated servers) to alleviate concerns back when they talked about the NES/SNES game “perk”. I also loathe the idea of supporting paid online and hardly have any games that I would want to play to justify doing so.
              To me, Splatoon 2 is a big indication that they’re not doing anything to merit charging for this service, but nobody can say for sure at this point.

              1. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4! Please, Nintendo! Blow me off of the fence at E3 onto your side so I can say the same for Switch, too!}

                Or it could just be Nintendo being their usual overly secretive self to the point of driving those of us that aren’t NIntendo faithful/loyalists insane. D:

    If Nintendo’s paid online is 90% the same as PlayStation Plus, then you people can praise how the Switch’s online is better than the PS4’s or even Xbox One’s. As it stands, it only seems we’ll be getting one game a month that we can’t even keep as long as we keep the service as that game will cost money once that month is up along with better internet connection. At 20-30 bucks a month, it seems the paid online is gonna be very basic, like the Switch’s home menu is. For that price, that’s fine but I want cloud storage (sure Nintendo employees can use it when they are trying to fix your Switch but there is no guarantee that Nintendo is gonna allow actual Switch owners to use such a feature), deals on games where I don’t have to buy other games just to get said deals, free games that I get to keep as long as I have the service & not some 1-month only rental service, & the ability to take my digital purchases & saves with me to another console without having to do some ancient system transfer bullshit. In fact, if we don’t get all of that for 20-30 bucks, I hope they have some kind of alternate plans in mind where you can pay 20 bucks a year for the basic & 60 bucks a year for all the snazzy things PlayStation Plus offer along with what the basic paid online plan entails.

  16. We just have to wait and see the full features and functions and how the network will be fully implemented. Right now we don’t have that much info but I’m not confident at what is in store for the moment.

    If the functions, features, price, etc. are good enough then I might consider it. As of now, I don’t plan on paying for online for Switch. If I can get the service for free like I do XBL (I never pay for that), then I’ll get it. lol

  17. I’m fine with paid online if it means a better online experience on a Nintendo system. Given that this is the first time we need to pay for it on their home console, it’s likely not up to par with the other two yet in terms of features. But I suppose it’s cheaper price makes that more forgiving. I expect it to be more improved by the time the next console comes along. Either way, it’s gonna be better than the free one we have now.

      Til we discover Nintendo made it as complicated as humanly possible, like how the Wii U to Wii U system transfer needed two Gamepads as it was done solely through those since settings were locked behind the damn thing. “Want to set up matches, voice chat, & all the other things you can do directly with the PlayStation 4 & Xbox One? Well you’ll need a smartphone as all of those things are exclusive to our smartphone Switch app! We know many of you will hate this idea but we want to be different from the competition.” Nintendo’s motto is still “We must be different for the sake of being different! We must!” :/

              1. My dear and loyal friend, PC does not have a curated, seamless online service. Your argument is moot since a PC/Switch comparison is also moot. There is no comparison. You go play PC on the go… oh wait… Well however you play PC. And I’ll play the way I want to. We’ll all be happy. :P

                1. When I was waiting for my flight at the airport last month there was a guy sitting on the floor next to me with his laptop on his lap and using his mouse and mousepad on the floor, it looked like he was playing some kind of openworld game. Where there’s a will there’s a way lol
